To be fair the SME "-R" arms are difficult to find and will be expensive (a cursory look on the web showed few available, and all were priced at well above $1,000).
That said, the asking price of £1,200 for the complete TT and arm does seem to be on the high side.
What does the "R" stand for or have that makes it so much more expensive?

I have one and it has a TT hanging underneath it :)
What does the "R" stand for or have that makes it so much more expensive?
It think it stood for 'revised' or 'revisited'. It was a return to the traditional J-shaped SME arms of the sixties and seventies, but used a thin walled stainless steel arm tube and a much improved counterweight decoupling arrangement. There were some other minor changes, but the most important was, sadly, the retention of the nylon 'knife-edge' bearing saddle. If the latter is replaced with a bronze bearing, the 3009R and 3012R arms represent a culmination of the 3000 series development, and are now highly desirable. Since SME have decided to stop making them, stop supplying spares, stop maintaining them, and stop selling any of their tonearms  - that now makes them rare.

a bargain if the photo is anything to go by
I’ll be surprised if it’s still for sale, I find most sellers take days to delete their listing if something is sold.
Too many vultures on gumtree these days if anything is going cheap, anything that comes up near me where I’ve tried to contact the seller seems to be virtually sold within minutes of being listed.
Not eBay but bookface marketplace ...
A complete Naim system, £3k or ask for individual prices

Bidding will fly on those!
If they were the original DM70 and not the DM70C, I would be interested.
Servicing might be difficult, though I believe the German company, whose name escapes me, that can service Quad 57s (they bought the assembly jigs from Quad) can do it.
Yes, it will be interesting to see what they fetch.

Wow, that was cheap. Replacing the veneer wouldn’t cost much to get done professionally. Bet the seller is a bit upset with the outcome. That said, if the veneer is doing that because of water damage/damp the speakers might need quite a bit of work.
I didn't think they sounded all that good at a lecture on Sound Reproduction ant Central Poly in about '75, and again in '85 at a friends, and probably rather dated now.

I think they are more collectible than anything else, like the pregnant Penguins. I always felt B&W speakers didn’t live up to the hype.
The Bowers and Wilkins DM2a and earlier DM3 are very good speakers - I use a pair of DM2as in my second system. I have no experience of any of the later or current models.
The DM70s were intended to replace the P2H speakers (which used an unreliable Ionfane plasma tweeter). The problem with the DM70 comes with trying to integrate a dipole driver (the electrostatic tweeter) with low frequency woofer in an enclosure that has a largely cardioid polar pattern.
They would make an interesting project to work on: I believe we have one Member here who has refurbished such a pair.

I have been known to pick stuff up on the streets of Hampstead I am afraid. I also left a few things outside the front door for people to take and they always go.
Not managed to find a dumped Decca Gold mind you.
:)
It's amazing just what people throw out in West Hampstead and also in Camden, London: flat screen TVs; kettles; steam irons; hi-fi mini-systems; CDs; DVDs etc.
I could say it is because they are too lazy to take them to charity shop where some good can be made of them. However it may be the charity shops do not want, or cannot do the required PAT testing for the electrical goods.

£2,700 !? I bought exactly the same deck and arm about ten years ago and paid £750, complete with a Shure M55E cartridge.

No my time was earlier, and at the time when they were doing great things; LS 5/5, 3/4, and then into the Spendor BC1 when Hughes left to form his own company. To this day I have never been so overcome by the purity of a speaker as I was with the 5/5 in the Quality Control Room at Bush when listening to Santana Abraxas after my Tannoy Lancaster Golds, and this with e ears of a 23 year old.
From general opinion the development of the polyprop cones, although an improvement, lead into a faulty design/production process leading to the much criticised LS 5/8 and 5/9, the latter particularly being produced out of spec compared with the prototype, they both had the presence dip, and the original didn't. The PM510 was a passive version of the 5/8, and that looks like an iteration of the 5/9.

It's a very good cartridge, though I'm not sure how much a NOS sample is really worth. I have one, but paid considerably less than the sum being asked. However it is rumoured that Ortofon made a loss on every one they sold, so it wasn't in production for long.
I had one that I bought from Grant, sold it on for £130 ( and a loss ) and even that was a struggle [emoji6]

Depends how much you want one. If they were still made, you'd probably pay around a grand.
for a grand your into audio technica art-9 territory, the ortofon is good but no where near that good.
It is rumoured that Ortofon never recovered the cost of development of the MC25FL; they made a loss on each one sold. Because of that the cartridge was not in production for long. But it could all be an old wive tale!
Whatever the story, it is a very, very good cartridge (easily up there with the Denon 103) and IMO superior to the Ortofon MC20 and MC30 etc.

Given that's the case, I've heard the best tape decks outperform some CDPs. Also, when applied to car audio, the better ones piss all over anything digital!:)

Disagree. With a top deck, top quality metal tape and a lot of care results can be 'acceptable' at best. Compact cassette is fundamentally compromised as a medium. More so even than vinyl. There'll be an Edison wax cylinder revival next. Followed by people walking about with minstrels in tow. Some things best left in the past but nostalgia appears to be a powerful tweak.

I think the 'refurbishment' was new surrounds on the bass drivers. The sticky tape, I've seen before and think it may have been original.
Well, I had assumed that the tape hanging off was the seller's attempt at refurbishing! I suppose at the time those were a current model no-one removed the grilles,
walpurgis
23-12-2020, 09:57
I've seen similar tape on other AR models. Presumably to stop the fine wires getting snagged, it does seem crude though.

The border guards just had to remember to always shoot into the dirt around the feet of the wetbacks. Never directly at them. No-one ever calls that bluff.

IMO deluded seller, probably it is an AT60, one of which I had in about '67, and it is nowhere near the pro series of the 301 and 401, it is a cheaper mass produced turntable.

"Bargains on ebay?", maybe not any more. I queried the discrepancy between the offered selling price from a Chinese seller and the inexplicably higher presented invoice price and received this reply:
https://i.imgur.com/zfoMzRA.png
But I'm not buying from the EU. Why are items sent from China being handled differently now? What is this nonsense?
It appears to be across the board, every Chinese seller I checked has bumped the price up.
Um, seems that your Chinese correspondent may be correct Geoff.

Rather odd that ebay have not issued a statement, at least, not one that has come my way.
No doubt there'll be something recently tucked away in T&C's.
Previously you would have paid the VAT yourself in the customs charges (assuming the cost of the item exceeded the threshold). Now you pay it at point of sale on items of any value.

Has somebody complained about paying what is due then? I think I missed that.
Overseas businesses that don't sell though a platform like Amazon or Ebay have complained because it means they have to register for VAT in the UK to carry on direct selling to the UK.
The way I see it they can either register or lose the business they were getting from us, entirely up to them.

If anyone has been charged twice they need to speak to the retailer about why they paid local tax on a duty free purchase. The tax is due on import (or indirectly on purchase if the seller has registered on the govt scheme).

Very rare Monitor Audio 'Monitor 9' speakers £90 or offer. I've not heard any, but they should be good being little brothers of the R852MD. I don't think he knows what model they are, postage is reasonable so well worth making an offer if you fancy compact speakers from what some may describe as the Monitor Audio golden era. Might be tempted myself! :)

They did (P2 model?). They employed the Fane 'Ionofane' horn tweeter. The problem as I recall was a ceramic element that eventually eroded, don't recall the exact details.
Ionofanes crop up for sale once in a blue moon and good ones fetch a pretty penny.

Dodgy looking NAD 804 speakers. Original dome tweeters missing and nasty cheap piezo items fitted, port tubes missing and grilles missing. Horrible!

Hope nobody's daft enough to buy these.

They are, although I believe the 66 version has the screw holes. Not a big problem as clips are available.
My HF2000s are late ones without holes, I removed them from a set of UL10s.
Extra tall Kef concerto’s , I’ve never seen them like this , currently on FB marketplace for silly money

Looks like KEF Kit 3 in a coffin to me! :)
Boxes are too big, but worth having for spares as they are late series drivers.

£300 would be about my limit for a good set of pukka Concertos.

I sold a pair to an Asian gentleman 2 years ago for £120 🥲

That's the sort of money I sold mine for 5 years ago but vintage speakers so seen to have gone up .
I remember reading that the Concerto cabinet was sub optimal in size for the drivers which I do buy given the B139 can work with more volume I think. So these might be quite nice actually. If it was me I'd upgrade the crossover to the improved aB variety that I think Falcon Acoustics do.

They have now changed the description to Kef hybrid speakers

Been looking at all sorts of stuff recently, especially AV receiver's and one thing keeps cropping up on eBay and that is older receivers without a remote control, sometimes this is not such an issue but with old Cambridge AVR'S like the 540r with it's linear style volume control it is.
I've lost count on how many I've seen for sale at inflated prices without the remote? Makes me wonder what are they doing with it? They were pretty hefty well made things as I remember.

Hi Grant.
Yes very probably, saw a 551r and again no remote, and asking 495 for it? He's having a laugh.
