They are nice sounding little speakers, but cheaply made. I sold my last pair years ago for forty quid. Wouldn't mind another set to play with, but at a sensible price obviously.
at nearly 700 notes, someone is having a laugh:doh: maybe moving decimal point to left will be closer
It just goes to show the unrealistic prices being asked for some audio gear. Even if they were AR3a, the price asked would still be a lot.

If it is the Sony version of the Philips CD101, but using a larger case, then £50 is the most I would pay.

It's nothing to do with Philips (the similar-looking Philips player was the CD-104) but has a rightful place in history as Sony's first ever CD player.
Sadly it's an awful sounding thing, so best treated as a collectable! :D
Disagree that it is 'awful sounding.' Although it's more than 25 years since I last heard one.

Rather scarce NAD 3150 integrated amp, currently at £45. I expect the bidding to zoom up before long (despite the spring clip bare wire speaker terminals :)).

They've gone up
Like everything else. Not much 'vintage' gear at sensible prices now.
The asking prices may not be sensible but not much is fetching the asking prices except turntables.
I see the same kit on eBay advertised month after month, same asking price, never any takers. Then you look at sold listings and see they're fetching only half what is being asked.
Mostly people don't need the cash that desperately so they think they can hold out for top whack. Also no-one takes inflation into account. If I had a quid for every time I've seen someone say 'I sold it for what I paid for it' when they've had it fifteen years. Err...the value of money has halved in that time, you've actually taken a 50% loss.

Regardless of rarity, and as good as it might be, it is not worth the asking price. If you are prepared to spend that sort of money, IMO it would be better to spend it on this: https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/273827191845?_trkparms=aid%3D1110006%26algo%3DHOME SPLICE.SIM%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D232898%26meid%3D480a39 1ee8d2483b87c5ac2d809de9c2%26pid%3D101195%26rk%3D2 %26rkt%3D12%26sd%3D224433577071%26itm%3D2738271918 45%26pmt%3D1%26noa%3D0%26pg%3D2047675%26algv%3DSim plAMLv9PairwiseUnbiasedWeb&_trksid=p2047675.c101195.m1851&amdata=cksum%3A273827191845480a391ee8d2483b87c5ac2 d809de9c2%7Cenc%3AAQAGAAACAP%252B1O01ZqAubr9nVBw8% 252BRRgJdrmlmMjrSaZ%252Bmrza8bUZJXsl4pk09YSBg%252F lmfS%252BcwOzh3Fjd3Jnp6zrJmfzExvHvfw8qP17PNzDpck4a MWAZ%252FzHXCVL%252FbXEvn8y74WvgsrKRXsYDtMHjd9MVyC tban%252Betb5RR3FF3mwxj2%252Bx5ON%252Fln2AqrswPwuc LdV1kYYgYf3unYlAa0iEzYRhzlNuAb81gS1X%252Fj%252BEIU C4chGNcY27TGpIypyxzkIJrdwTBUP2DDPJpUhDvtz4747qb2es qAlSQuyGaF8FhwYifj70blAokqw%252BuD5SHfmoln7qRiwEZe x4Mm5kCFwLRtckDoal0WxS5wE20tL6W5LYzkzmJXWIdplaA0H4 0jf5lkTPL8sPLwq7UcYQGuuQHSw9fWbwjAm8CIxFmuAparJaKW qoiawPf%252Fc9nQFp2ElC27WNQ4F8J9G9b6syNbg%252B0hTt 4z4V2GXe9IVoz%252ByZiYk3iTtnumypeFaftgZGMVbLDaDq8D EOIbqErHoMIoMzc7bWGOaiKigFzHCGm3c8FYep1jzyHtMjR8ba lLSezmaWW7RyF5tuZ0h7GQxPXXkjvsVQrDfSzanmAMuyE4JVlW Um%252FbuzVsbThAufHcDZVpzxIW3bJ90aLMPGNNYVbLV5YP1J bK8k%252FnyptHOZqd3KlpL%252FWDjDXo4C%7Campid%3APL_ CLK%7Cclp%3A2047675 and save yourself a little money.

A B&O collector might like this. I would have it as a second systems but SWMBO said no, I always liked my sister-in-laws in Denmark, they have a great sound.
I came across this complete Beogram 9000 system it is in good condition and is a working, the TT works but needs a new cartridge (I think about £200). The seller sent me videos of it working CD and Cassette, it sound pretty OK, it was his wife's cousin who owned it from new but has passed away.

For a long time I used to covet a pair of DM3s; but I would baulk at paying £250 for a pair now.
Before the DM3 came out, Jim Rogers sold me 13"x 8" EMI bass units, Celestion HF1300's and STC 4001G's, put them in cabinets (about 2 Cu ft) and made some crossovers, still have the speakers, sound pretty good. I also have genuine DM3's that use the HF1400.

I thought it was the big one but on closer inspection it's the smaller 45W version. Still a looker though.

Agreed, a bargain, I would love to take a punt on those but collection only from Redruth... and I already have far too many unused speakers... Must. Resist.

Looks like an interesting project for someone. Drivers alone worth more than the asking. Too far for me to drive.
Seems that TEL (Transmission Electronics Ltd) was a forerunner of IMF if I read Jerry at Falcon Acoustics post correctly. See:

Worth it just for the drive units alone.
I have a bit of an issue with people breaking classic vintage speakers for the value of the drive units, been asked to do this a few times and always refused.
Last time was with some KEF Calindas, drivers probably worth over £200, had a number of offers in that region for the drivers alone. Ended up selling the complete speakers to a pal for fifty quid, now used every day for TV and music in his large living room where they sound superb.
Breaking should be a criminal offence IMV ;)

Well at least you see fewer empty Tannoy cabinets for sale these days. It was at an epidemic rate a few years ago.

I wasn't suggesting they be broken up, nor would I agree that they are "classic vintage speakers" (I have never heard of Transmission Electronics), just that the value of the drive units are worth at least the asking price.
It does not follow a priori that a large cabinet stuffed with well respected drive units will sound good; by all means listen to them, but if found wanting there is no ethical reason not to cannibalise them for the drive units.

I was just commenting on the practice of breaking, not specifically replying to you directly.
I think if Transmission Electronics were the predecessor of IMF then these can be classed as classic or at least of historical worth. So would seem a shame to break them just to make a few quid profit.
I don't know that ethics comes into it, it's just a loudspeaker, not a moral conundrum. I just personally don't like to see old speakers like this demolished, same as I don't like to see old buildings demolished. Obviously the legal owner is absolutely free to do as he pleases with them - and to tell me to piss off :)
I have heard of TDL speakers, which according to their history: http://www.tdl-loudspeakers.co.uk/history.htm, was founded by John Wright (1) , who later went on to be one of the three new owners of IMF when the UK bought out the IMF name after the UK division parted company with the US parent company (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Transmission_line_loudspeaker).
I'm not sure what the initials TDL stand for, but it is quite likely the 'T' is 'Transmission', and the name evolved to become 'Transmission Electronics'. So in that respect they could be regarded as being "classic vintage speakers".
(1) In the cited history of TDL speakers it is claimed that John Wright invented the concept of transmission line loudspeakers. This is incorrect, the claim ought to go to Dr Bailey, a lecturer at Bradford University who worked in conjunction with Arthur Radford to design the Radford loudspeakers, as well as the Radford SS amplifier: the STA30.

Hi Barry. I got that info from this link (http://www.tdl-loudspeakers.co.uk/intro.htm).
I also tried to find the base documents for that company but failed (may well now be in the National Archives). However it does seem that a company of that name (https://companycheck.co.uk/company/01397764/TRANSDUCER-DEVELOPMENTS-LIMITED/companies-house-data) was dissolved 43 years ago. The SIC code used then could well have covered a range of products including speakers. Often companies choose (or chose in this case) a general SIC code.

And a bit more on Jim's history site here http://ukhhsoc.torrens.org/makers/BeamEcho/index.html

Thanks Alan. Those are interesting links.
A few years ago someone tried to re-manufacture Beam Echo amplifiers (I think it was the 35W monoblock design) and offer them for sale. There was an article in HFN about it, but it all went quiet after that.
(I note that a set up calling themselves 'English Acoustics' are re-manufacturing the Leak Stereo 20, which apart from the logo and the style of the connectors looks to be a near copy of the original design.)

Yes the Beam Echo Avantic DL7-35. Some believe it was the best Mullard 5-20 amp ever.
The original has a rounded transformer cover whereas the 'copy' had 45 degree corners on the cover and wooden end cheeks. You can find pictures, but they are on Japanese sites so that tells you something.
Yes Ken Kessler did a review way back. (https://www.kenkessler.com/hi-fi/uk-news-january-1995/) 7th paragraph.

the Beam Echo Avantic DL7-35
I have vague memories of owning one over forty years ago. The only thing I recall about it was rather a lot of hum :).
Being reminded of early British valve power amplifier designs, I find it interesting that the individual manufacturers chose a colour for their amplifier chassis (and for the transformer cases) that was unique to each manufacturer. Thus:
Quad - a dark metallic grey
Rogers - maroon
Beam Echo - blue
Leak - gold (later to become black)
Lowther - green
Tannoy - black.
(A little like the early European motor racing team colours:
Britain - GREEN
France - BLUE
Italy - RED
and
Germany - SILVER (originally no paint finish at all, as they wanted to minimise weight and decided to have the bare metal on display.) )

I have no idea what it would be worth, with original box and looks in good nick I’d expect it to go for £300 at least? I wouldn’t pay that for a curiosity experiment... We’ll see...

Yes the drivers were bespoke units so pretty much no chance of replacing them if it were required. I'd still be very tempted if they were near me though, thankfully they're not.

I used to have one, used with a Goldring G99 deck and a Decca {I]ffss[/I] arm. Sold the lot to the Grand Wazoo (late of this parish). Still have a sample of the 1/2" mounting version: the SC4E and a Mk.III, which I can use in a Decca arm or with the Decca/SME adaptor for arms with a SME/EIA coupling.

I saw and heard these at various Hi-Fi shows back in the seventies, but can't for the life of me remember what they sounded like. I remember my mate being impressed with what he saw on their stand and buying the rather popular ST60 integrated amp. It sounded very good driving his Cadenzas (better than his Armstrong 521).

The seller must have changed the description, as there is no mention of Metrosound or electrostatic. The heading is now: "vintage type speakers goodmans elac", so I presume the drive units are by Goodmans and Elac.

They do and it's noted in that old advert Geoff posted. I didn't see any mains input in the pics either but they don't cover every inch of the speaker even though there's loads of them.
They do seem to be a close match to the one in the Metrosound advert though. I'd never heard of them and there's not much on the web. There's a company called Metrosound doing in car audio, I wonder if it is the same firm?

There have been self-energising electrostatic headphones, but I'd think it unlikely for speakers.
Perhaps somebody bought a job lot of left over Metrosound cabinets and bunged their own choice of drivers in. Hard to guess fifty years on.

I must have been living under a rock as I’d never heard of the Matrix 800 before either - review on Stereophile pretty much says they are the best speaker ever... face only a mother could love, though... there’s a pair with a dealer for £6k, so that’s the top limit you’d expect to see them go for, will be very interesting to see what they make, although as eluded to, the description could be better... looking at other items for sale and previous sales I don’t think it’s a scam, though. Would love to hear them, but unless they go for the starting price that won’t happen!

Hard to say, but I'd think the drivers would have strong magnets to help damp the line resonance. Could be overdamped in a sealed box.

Nice to have the set.
Just got back into radio myself. I didn't get on with my Rotel tuner I'd had for years, so never used it. Treated myself to a cheapo Marantz ST-385L AM/FM/LW unit that does the job just fine, I like the station pre-sets. Cost me a whopping £18.95 including delivery! :)

Cheap as chips to add to the set lovely looking thing - Love a good tuner here too they are the cheapest thing in HI FI to buy at the moment :) still have the greats Quad FM 3 , 4 , Denon 260L , Sony ST 88 and Aiwa R30 - :):)
Should be here in a couple of days I'll rig it up interesting to compare it to other tuners was £200+ when released the 504 not much online and not many know the mod either
Another (modest) tuner collector here; most of which have been bought off eBay:
Quad AM1
Quad AM3
Quad FM2
Quad FM3
Quad FM4
Leak 'Troughline' Stereo
B&O 1700
Cambridge T55.
Yet I only listen to two or three stations.

A bit of a drift from the Ebay Bargains thread, but as you are all talking tuners... What are your thoughts on DAB in a hifi setting? I'd like to be able to get some DAB stations (like R6 Music) but not if it's going to sound crap.

It's a reasonable choice as a vintage budget amp and not unpleasant to listen to, if not desperately exciting. It's just not worth spending a lot on and this one isn't even particularly tidy.

checking sold listings over past two months give a rough average sold price of about £130. Given they look good (I think) and are not too bothered by low impedance loads I think they are a reasonable option at that sort of money. I'd take one over a brand new Rega Io any day of the week.

I'm round my mate's tonight, who has a 3020 he no longer uses. If he could get a ton for it he'd be buzzing, especially as he's just replaced it with a nice Sony TA2650 (which he prefers) and a Trio t/t for a combined cost of twenty quid.

That's not veneer. It's vinyl.
Once that starts lifting there's no way back really. It all has to come off and real wood veneer used instead, which invariably never happens as vinyl is usually used on cheap speakers that are not really worth the bother.

Yes I see what you mean. Maybe I'll just hold out for something from their "R" series (R152 etc). I used to have a pair of the R352s back in the 80s, loved them and shouldn't have got rid of them. Proper VENEER too :)

I'd offer to drop it in a skip for him :).

Well it ain't going in my skip, lowering the tone of the place...
Here's a rather strange and hard to believe skip related story:
Last week my next door neighbour asked if he could chuck an old telly in my skip, save him a trip to the tip, Course he could, I said. We get on great - I get his read "What Hifi" and "Hifi Choice" mags, and he gets my Which? magazine :)
But then a few days later he got an email from Amazon acknowledging some films he'd rented through his Prime Video account. Which he hadn't. Turns out the order had been made via his TV (the one in my skip, which has since mysteriously vanished!) Amazon recognised this scam as a thing that is happening these days, and waived the invoice.
There seems to be no limit to the resourcefulness and bare faced cheek of modern-day scumbags.
He must be made of money if he can just skip a working telly.
I was imagining it was one of those old wooden cased things from the 1970s not a modern smart TV.
Round here all they chuck out is really crappy Argos furniture and old mattresses. If you look in the entries there'll always be at least two mattresses.
Soon they'll become so advanced that they will be able to steal your DNA off the mattress and clone another you.

Anyways in 30 odd years living round here I've never once seen anything in a skip that was worth anything.
My mate in London finds valuable antiques just lying by the kerb, on a regular basis this is. He found a fire surround once, got three hundred for it.

It was only about 23" screen, about the size of a tray you might eat your dinner off. Secondhand tellies are worth jack shit these days, at Christmastime the council tips will be inundated with perfectly good TVs whose only fault is being not quite big enough to screen The Great Escape convincingly.
I thought all the old 60s and 70s tellies had been snapped up and made into fish tanks then sold to hipsters for silly money.

I can concur - my partner still has her flat in London, and the amount of decent and working gear that is turfed out is amazing: flat screen TVs; electric kettles; fridges, and freezers. All because it is too much trouble for them to offer the items to charity shops.
sounds like it might be worth getting a van and going tatting in London.

You might only get a tenner for it but even so. To me that's just like chucking money out. I can't do it.

I feel the same, and I do keep a lot of stuff which looks like "it might come in for something", but we have such limited space here we have to be a bit ruthless. My last telly (42" Panasonic plasma) didn't go to landfill, Anita sold it to her best friend for £100 (honestly, with friends like Mrs. P...) :(

you can always find someone who wants something. My old telly went to a mate's son who wanted a big monitor in his bedroom for his video games. They couldn't afford to buy him one even for a couple of hundred quid.
Didn't ask for any money as being a rear projection unit resale value was nil but there's no way I was going to skip a perfectly working unit with not a mark on it even though I don't really have the room to store it. Psychologically I just can't do it.
i usually just give stuff like that away as its less hassle to selling it for little money and often lots of trouble from the buyer

When something has to go, giving it away is my preferred option. But often I find myself giving stuff I hadn't planned on getting rid of. Which is probably a bit silly, and Anita would probably string me up if she knew how often I do that.
At the same time, I can never say no to free stuff. If someone offers me something (could be anything) I always gratefully accept it , then wonder afterwards what the hell I'm going to do with it. Usually I just end up giving it someone else.
The only thing I found in a skip, that was of interest to me, was a Monster MP HTS 1600 Home Theatre Reference Powercenter:

Castle Pembroke Speakers £75 in Southport. If I was local I'd have these, I suspect the look reflects a pipe and slippers sound but they will be rich and relaxing, perfect to sit back and listen to with a robust Bordeaux after a hard day's work [emoji16]

Never 'Judge a book by its cover'. One of the Castle range of speakers I heard used Wharfedale drive units and was very good for a small stand mount speaker.

I had no idea that the Omars had been spotted on here! Just thought you might be interested to know that they arrived at their new home last night... ;)
Just a re-foam to do and you can put the Beolab 90s up on eBay. :D

Oooh, I'd love these. Must be rare, I've never seen any before. Being Teledyne, I'd guess they're out of the Acoustic Research factory, despite the resemblance to contemporary KLH units. Circa 1970 at a guess.

There were the occasional interesting Olson branded items back then, I had a nice Japanese made Olson integrated amp around then, very neat bit of kit.
My full rangers are superb speakers and cheaper lol

They were made by Wharfedale, as were all Leak speakers at the time. They were part of the Rank organisation.
You are very unlikely to source spare parts. A repair would only be as good as the capability of the person doing it, assuming anyone took it on. No telling how it might turn out.

I thought so you see the odd pair of those come up but these were the only v1s I've ever seen. I've seen the SD2 v1 maybe twice in the 15 years or so I've been looking out for speakers.

Vintage 4" full-range speakers, NOS boxed! Eagle FR4, actually made by Coral and rather nice quality, fabric roll cone surrounds and beefy magnets.

I've owned a couple of pairs in the past and they're decent little units, ideal for a compact horn system.

I may be several years late in making this point. Anyway, I don't sell items regularly on eBay but I have a 100% record on more than 50 sales I've made, including quite a few items worth £100-£500 (I have a track record of several hundred purchases also). However eBay is now holding on to any sale proceeds I might make for two weeks after the transaction due to me being an "infrequent seller". Apparently this is to ensure great service to buyers and allow time for any disputes to be resolved. But to me it sucks. And why they didn't do this in the early days when it was like the wild west with so-called sellers who had minimal track record ripping people off I don't know (well, I do, their priority was to grow the business).
Back in the day part of the appeal of eBay was that it was a bit of fun. I guess all these businesses push their models to see how far they can go until there's a tilt point where customers walk. Anyway, I'm now researching alternatives (yep, I know there's an option here, although the next thing I'm hoping to sell is fishing tackle so it's probably not appropriate).

Ebay think they've cornered the market and so they've got too big for their boots. We need to make a concerted effort to show 'em they're wrong.
Be sure to let us know how you get on Pete.
