Each to their own but after 40 years of listening I can confirm that they really are not worth the effort.

What effort? They sound quite decent for the money they fetch. I had my first set maybe forty years ago and liked them. Picked up the occasional pair now and then since.

This is really not fair so one is not allowed to like a pair of speakers without getting this anymore i think an apology is in order Geoff is a well respected member here and knows a lot and is a valued member downgrading own for simply voicing and opinion is rude...

Geoff's recommendations have been pivotal in getting my system to the point it's at today. Not only that, but he's a thoroughly nice guy and been nothing but a gentleman since I've been on this forum.

I sincerely hope this was tongue in cheek and the context has been lost in the text.

When they were first released I wanted a pair of Ditton 15's, but price was out of my league. Many decades later, I bought a second hand pair and I must confess, I was disappointed, slightly boomy bass, a muddled midrange and possibly needing a supertweeter. I acquired several other pairs, all were similar. However, they do produce a reasonable sound from just a few watts, so probably providing a good match for a budget system. I am talking about the original 15 that uses the Celestion HF1300. I have no experience of the later model that I believe uses a soft dome tweeter.

The Mordant Short Pagents were a much later design (the '80s) than the the Ditton 15s (the late '60s). When I was staring out, I considered buying a pair of Ditton 15s, but couldn't really afford them, so I built a pair of similar sized speakers following a Wharfedale design using the Wharfedale RS8/DD chassis.

Changing the subject,

https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20171211/9e5302c031ab0a891eabb558d453383f.jpg

I’ve been watching this preamp for a year I guess? A very long time, he hasn’t budged on the price in all that time, but I’m sure a decent offer might seal the deal? It’s a nice looking unit with all the tubes, remote and factory boxes. Why has it not sold? Should I avoid it? Or should I make the offer for around $1250? Anyone have any experience with this model?

If you haven't been to Berriedale then maybe it's worth a trip as you can experience the "Berriedale Braes".

It's the steep hills as they plunge down to a river crossing at the bottom of the valley, on a bike especially my VFR they are great fun, in a van loaded up with furniture including my Tannoy Cheviots it was much more hair raising, it's one of the few places in the UK with run off areas all over the place on a main road (A9).

Been through there loads of times up and down to Orkney.

I was looking at complete stereo systems earlier on the Tree of Gum. Used to enjoy finding a nice older system that had a decent amp and maybe turntable !
I cant get over how in the last few months that anything that even may resemble something half decent is priced at the top and above.
Shyte Technics systems at 250 quid when in reality they are budget fare that £50 is more than adequate
Demand seems to have run riot and supply of good cheap tack ,dried up lol

The same goes for most decks and amps. Then the week after ,you see one go ,really cheap

The seller is happy to drop them at my sister's place in Lanarkshire as he is coming down to Edinburgh for New Year.

I guess I then have the hassle of getting them from Lanarkshire to Berkshire but that shouldn't be insurmountable. I wonder if Tannoy Coatbridge could spare a couple of boxes?

Anyway I bought them! Have fancied a play with 10 inchers for a while, I've had lots of permutations of 12 and 15 inch golds and hpds .... need to complete my education.

More loony pricing. Rogers Ravensbourne amp at £475! I don't care how nice an example it may be. It's not worth anywhere near that much.

The example is a early production, never got on with the Ravensbourne amp, but the Ravensbourne FET2 tuner is very good.

I agree, Ravensbrook amp is sweeter than Ravensbourne.

That's what it is. It comes with a variety of daft brand badges, but the amp itself looks decent enough. I've noticed that the main component parts are available separately and fairly cheaply, so at the moment, spares can be sourced.

Hello again (one of those days when you keep bumping into someone). I have a 250SE in the back room system. I think it's 30wpc to the 350's 50 wpc. It drives some humble Mission 731LEs. Highly recommended if you don't want paint-stripping volume.

Ah. Decent little amp the 250SE, I've owned those too. But the 350 feels about three times as powerful in use. Has bags of grunt and significanly better sound quality. I'd be after another to mess around with if I hadn't already got a beefy JVC integrated to play with.

Never seen this done before but I bet it works pretty well ... I quite like the Linn Axis had one years ago ... lots of them came with Linn Basik or even MkI Akito arms that have been long stripped and go for utterly silly money for what they are, I’d take a Jelco 750 any day of the week.

All up with the deck, arm cable etc I’d say this is a bit of a bargain.

My slight concern with this would be the arm being mounted at the Linn standard 211mm rather than 214mm which is what the Jelco needs. That’s quite a difference to try and dial out at the headshell, and from personal experience with an Axis and this very model of arm, I can confirm that it’s pretty much impossible to get good alignment with this combination for minimum distortion. The seller may have moved the arm mount out by 3mm, of course.

Chap with the Linn Axis / Jelco SA-750D and Denon 103 has put his price up!

I did ask him whether he had used the correct mounting distance .. he hasn't of course but insists that he 'hears no distortion' despite the fact the cartridge shows no sight of the pushing back/twisting you'd need to do to minimise it when the arm is at the wrong distance. Don't you hate some of these ebay tossers? Some poor bugger will buy this and not know why he's not getting a decent sound out of it.

I regard these as the most economic entry into the world of 'proper' SUT's. They sound rather good, I've owned three and they worked well with every low output MC I tried.

Just bought two of these,

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/191876359852

I have a large suitable 27-0-27 V transformer that I took out of an old Japanese amp many years ago. This should do nicely.

They are probably fake chips, but the TDA7297 and TDA7266 amps that I bought some time ago, probably have fake chips, but they still work very well.

Tis nice, says that it was purchased in the mid 70's, however, the 303 looks like a late production one, IEC mains socket and round speaker sockets.

A 33 in good condition is not really that bad, the FM3 is a pretty good sounding tuner.

I used to use a 33/303 combo for AV duties. (Now use a Hafler DH101/Quad 520 combo.)

My Quad FM3 has given me thirty years of trouble-free service, and was only replaced with the FM4 some eight years ago.

In general Quad gear is very well built, and on the whole quite reliable. I'm a big Quad fan; excluding the speakers, I have 14 items of Quad electronics.

I agree Quad stuff is generally well made and good, but the 303 has woolly bass and the top is muffled.

The 33 has all sorts of rebuilds available.

That series is very old now, and IMO bettered by much other equipment.

Depends on the implementation and the speakers used; also very much dependent on the quality and specification of the output capacitors.

The 33 is 'of its time' and is, as you say, bettered by more recent designs, but in its day it was no worse than its competitors: Leak 'Varislope', Radford SC22 (though the SC24 was an improvement) and the Sugden C51.

That's for one. I don't care how rare it is, it's a loony price. It'll probably go to Japan for a mono system.

This dealer asks steep prices for most of his stuff. £725 for poxy little Goodmans Maxims, I ask you! I don't care if they are the alnico version. I used to buy these for a fiver a pair at boot sales years ago.

Big Ears Audio = Idiot!

Certainly his stuff moves rather slowly ...many years ago - I think about 7-8 years ago - I made what I thought was a very fair offer on a pair of Pamphonic 2001 KT66 monoblocks. Not only are they still there, the price is exactly the same as it was back then (which I would posit tells us something about whether £2800 is the right price or not!).

Unless he paid stupid money for them (unlikely I would think) surely turnover in stock is more important in business than having stuff sitting around waiting for a mug prepared to pay top whack and then some?

Not checked the specs, but the volume of those tapered cabinets looks on the small side, so I guess that is true. The drivers etc may have potential for use in a bigger box.

There were some for sale near to me a few years ago so I did some research. JBL still make them although slightly updated. Bass rolls off really high, even against a wall. You need subs with them, that is part of their design. But agree the drivers would be worth salvaging.

To misquote the old Ringo Starr joke - "The best speakers from Japan? Heck, they're not even the best speakers from the Sony factory"! :D

I'd wager that Sony's own SS-GR1 and APM-8 would show them a clean pair of heels, along with some of the bigger offerings from the likes of Technics, Diatone and TAD. Personally, however, I'd stick a decent wager on the prize going to the Yamaha GF-1s.

Yes. I think that's what they are. Driving the bass end I'd guess. Dunno what the beefy looking valve amps are.

Looks like a complete TD124 MkII motor unit and armboard to me ... plinths are easily come by.

Be interesting to see what it goes for. TD124s are quite sought-after these days but we have no idea the condition of this one they can potentially have a lot of weaknesses - main bearing and the stepper pulley bearing and shaft can need attention, while the motors gum up over time (my motor was completely rebuilt by Martin Bastin and I've also have the stepper pulley bearing replaced by Loricraft) these are the sorts of things that can make a bargain purchase turn into a relatively expensive one.

KEF Corelli speakers, quite rare. Need a service, but may go cheap. In Dalston, north of central London. Lovely sounding speakers, amazingly transparent. I have a pair, think LS3/5a with bass. I reckon these need a recap and resoldered joints. Best all-rounder of any of the classic 'C' range of KEF's.

https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Kef-Corelli-Speakers-excellent-condition-hardly-used-with-original-paperwork/112769440049?ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AIT&_trksid=p2060353.m1438.l2649

So I put in a bid for these and won them for the grand sum of ...... £12.50

Not tried them yet (still in the boot).

What's the best way of testing them and in particular individual drivers and the crossovers?

Happy to strip things down, desolder stuff and (depending on costs) purchase new drivers, caps etc.

Don't need more speakers, purchased them just for fun and learning. If I discover they are simply too knackered I will take them to the local dump.

Major bargain there. They are well worth the effort of sorting them out. Parts are a bit tricky to find at a sensible price but do turn up.

The bass driver coils can foul in the magnet gap, but that can usually be sorted. The T27 tweeters should be OK.

A recap is a sensible move. I used new Alcaps from cricklewood electronics on ebay. Put some foam pads behind the crossover to stop it resonating.

Don't interfere with the foam interior damping, it's supposed to occupy most of the cabinet volume.

These are really lovely sounding speakers and a good pair is an appreciating classic. You should find them every bit as enjoyable as your Eatons.

Really useful info. Any tips on what simple things I can do to establish what is what before I embark on more serious stuff like a recap?

I see some folks use a battery and a multimeter to test things. I already have a multimeter and I guess I can scrounge a battery from somewhere. [emoji3]

Would it be better if I started a new thread in the DIY section?

You don't need a battery. Just test coil resistance with the meter. Should be around 5 to 6 ohms if I'm correct.

Check bass drivers for free cone movement back and forth without getting coils rubbing. Just push them gently backwards and forwards with your fingers.

There's not a lot else to give you problems really, even the crossovers should work, but probably won't be at their best until recapped.

Don't worry about using different wire inside for now. The tweeters have captive leads anyway, you'll probably need a bit of slim heatshrink sleeving to reconnect those if you take them out.

Yes. If you're going to do these as a project, a thread in the Drawing Board section would be a good idea.

Those Corellis suffer from some of the worst Bextrene 'quack' that I have ever heard - I had an immaculate pair years ago and had to get rid - there is NO WAY they have anything to do with LS3/5 a midrange - the midrange quack dictates they are a no no. If anyone else advises you otherwise, I suggest you run away - people who recommend these speakers are either a) living in the past b) have hearing problems c) living in a dream world or d) need their ears syringing.
