Tannoy HPD 315 Devons in nice nick at £550 in London. You can see from the photos that they have been reconed and now have the pleated fabric surrounds. Well worth grabbing.

peerless mid.. Its a celestion T1600 bass as the '44'/'66', i think the '25' used it anorl

Ultra rare high quality speakers. German make using wonderful quality Japanese seventies Coral drive units. The bass drivers are black coned 10-L60 units and very potent, The mids I've not used, but being Coral they will be great. I still own a pair of the Berylium dome tweeters, which are remarkable. Think Yamaha NS-1000 with 10" bass speakers and you'll have an idea. I'd buy these like a shot if I had room, the drive units are some of the best made ever.

That is not a UK model it's 220v made for JVC Germany. It was a great annoyace to us at JVC UK, we wanted the black ones but Japan would not let us have them. The 11-G model was the best budget amp of it's day. One day I'll pick one up for the bedroom, just for nostalgias sake.

Yeah. It's nuts. In material and manufacture terms LS3/5a speakers are worth maybe £300 to £400. It's not as if anybody had to do much in the way of product development after the Beeb licenced the design. I know they can sound very nice on the right system and playing the right music, but you ain't gonna get the best out yer Led Zep through them.

After owning many pairs of speakers over many years I would still say the LS3/5a's are a superb sounding speaker... the reason I have not been too keen to part with my Sterling's is that I believe they do have a certain magic if used with the right equipment, and listened to in the near'ish field..

I think they really do possess a certain something special if used correctly...;)

Perfect working order it says and is probably right then, nothing to believe otherwise from the photos. Having said that, some people don't notice when a coles tweeter doesn't work. Confusing thing is it says the drivers were replaced by spendor, yet the photos show the originals which I very much doubt Spendor would provide - perhaps these photos were taken before they were replaced and now have the later mid/bass drivers. Shame I've already spent my disposable income for the month - best leave the rest for rent etc I suppose :(

Ive had a pair {ive had every original castle model} I still prefer the 'Dover' from that era..The insaine thing about The old castles from the 70's/80's they fetch very little money but would see off many other speaker from those era's..However i stick with the very first speaker design they made.

That was my thoughts Geoff. He had it at £400 originally. Nic enough deck but way over priced ime, and yours too. At £80 its a very good buy though I'd have thought. Not a bad deck.

Yes, has been for sale since Oct 2013 but the guy just bumped the advert so is still for sale.... I'd guess with import and shipping you'd still get it for less than half price of a new one, especially with a bit of haggling.

Very tempting but I would perhaps proceed with caution!

The seller hasn't sold anything for a long long time (so ripe for an account hijack) and their previous sales have been old clothes and the odd bit of kitchen appliance. A search of one of their previous sold items http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/170823134077 was in 2012 (so shows how inactive they are) and was collection only..

Now the seller is instisting on PayPal (a lot easier to run away with the money with PayPal) rather than collection only and is offering free postage on such heavy heavy amps.

Previous sale used normal writing, the new one uses CAPS only and in italics.. it rather odd.

The seller says this: "INCREDIBLE SOUNDING WITH MODEL ONE OR MY MODEL SEVEN OR MAC C30 IN 40 WATT MODE OR 20 WATT TRIODE MODE "

- so they are claiming to have a Marantz 7 and old Mac stuff too - this sounds like a copy and paste description from a rich enthusiast from elsewhere on the net, not someone selling some old topshop clothes and a used breadmaker for £11 based in Hillingdon.

Let's do a search for some of the description text and see if any old sales come up!

Surprised you'd have gone for that, dude. The cantilever's been pulled to one side, which is a sure sign of incorrect bias having being applied, over an extended period. I wouldn't touch it with a bargepole, unless you were just after it for the cartridge, not the stylus...

Whenever I'm looking at used vintage cartridges (even MMs), styli with 100% straight cantilevers are a must! :)

are, at the moment a bit more reasonably priced...I'd be asking if the treble horns are still functioning, but if so, and they just need re foaming, Billy Bargain. You can get original treble diaphragms on ebay, but they're not cheap. Might still be worth it though.

I have Urei 811's, bigger than these with 15" drivers (809's are 12") and after a little restoration and modification, they're very good indeed. Urei's were designed to be soffit mounted, so work well positioned right in to corners, unlike most hi-fi speakers. Working well, fed a clean signal (and they'll obligingly make you aware if its not), they're an intoxicatingly open window and dynamically will show a clean pair of heels to most speakers.

I've got a serious Decca deficiency feeling at the moment. I fancy a Mk.III or Mk.IV and there are some decent candidates on The Bay at the moment, but being a bit skint (poor pensioner syndrome), I'm being wary (but not necessarily sensible). :)

Thanks for that Grant. I just bought it! :)

It's not one I've come across before and it'll have to go some to better my Osawa. But if I decide it's not for me, I'm sure I can resell it without a loss.

was it a BIN price? it was quite low. i have the same one, i remember i paid a bit more in pounds but than the euro rate was better so i guess we paid the same in euros:=)

edit - actually, no they aint the same, mine is a low impedance version, 8030. yours is for denon 103 and similar.

well, there is something special about vintage japanese toroidal mc transformers wound with silver wire.

it's an excellent all rounder. if you manage to source both transformers, 8020 and 8030, you can actually cover all the needs you may have with different pickups. there's actually the third model too, 8025, just very seldom.

there's a room for a tweak there because the signal goes through rather complicated by-pass switch that lies on a small board. i don't think anyone needs that and i'm pretty convinced that removing this circuit may elevate luxman performance to the level of the best ortofon silver transformers from the 80s.

Yes. I have doubts about unnecessary switches in equipment and have been known to bypass them. I may bridge the switching for comparison.

(by the way, you double posted so I removed one for you :))

Heard this set up years ago and thought they were very good indeed. My guess these need recapped now as they ran pretty hot. The matching phonostage and CD player are very good too.

I think this was the same pair discussed at length on the "Bargains on eBay" thread here (http://theartofsound.net/forum/showthread.php?33544-Bargains-on-ebay-(Part-2)&p=636259#post636259)... so I wonder if it was a genuine listing or not?

These

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/JBL-UREI-809A-Studio-Monitors/331523667228?_trksid=p2045573.c100033.m2042&_trkparms=aid%3D111001%26algo%3DREC.SEED%26ao%3D1% 26asc%3D29666%26meid%3Dee6fb51d3fbd4eb58a997e2078a 99bf5%26pid%3D100033%26rk%3D3%26rkt%3D4%26sd%3D161 665038395

are, at the moment a bit more reasonably priced...I'd be asking if the treble horns are still functioning, but if so, and they just need re foaming, Billy Bargain.

Picked these up yesterday and gave em a brief test today. Drivers functioning both bass and treble, so foams are on order. One cabinet is poorer than the the other, but as it happens I already have an orphan single 809, so between the three I should be able to build a very nice pair. Plenty about them on Lansing Heritage site - they're a JBL 2214 woofer with a JBL 2416h compression horn, not a million miles from the driver configuration in the rather desirable JBL 4425 studio monitor, but obviously arranged as a dual concentric (or coaxial as the Americans would have it). And with a time aligned crossover, these should sound really good (on Lansing Heritage they say as good as the big Ureis, just less loudness capability).

Amendment - Just noticed they went for a shade over six grand. I hope for the purchaser's sake, it's a genuine sale.

I trolled him with a low offer which he rejected with the message "Don't be an idiot".

I took exception to this so responded with another even lower offer and the following message:

"I would have thought that a person who bought a £500 moving coil cartridge when they didn't have a phono stage that worked with moving coil cartridges should be fairly careful about who they call an idiot.

No?"
