View Full Version : Bargains on ebay? (Part 2)
No, I got a very nice reply explaining how the seller had recently bought it from an elderly gent who'd had it from new and had been in touch with Heybrook in the early days. Why he'd made a specific note of my name is anyone's guess though. He also said that the old boy had recently had the new arm fitted by AO, and that he assumed the new switch was fitted at the same time.
seems to have removed that reference Shane
Just looked, it's still there on the last photo.
So it is shane..i missed the last pics. still cheap enough at moment

A heads-up to Denon DL-103 users ...
I recently picked up (for a very modest sum) a re-cantilevered DL-103 from a chap in Japan who seems to specialist in re-tipping/re-cantilevering them.
I'm on record as very much NOT being a fan of re-tipped 103s after several bad experiences here in the UK.. but I must say, for the money, I'm well impressed with the Shibata-tipped standard 103 I bought from him (nice match on the Hashimoto HM7s as well). He has been selling assorted others with different tips and cantilever materials (I assume from his own experitmentations).
I'm using this one as a 103 just begs to be used ... in a heavy shell with an additional 8g stabiliser weight bonded to it .. headshell and cartridge weight is an SPU-ish 31g, add the 30g effective mass of the FR64 arm and you have a low compliance dream ticket. (In my experience most people who diss these cartridges are attempting to use them in a too-lightweight arm, and often at the wrong impedance setting as well.)
Ok it doesn't quite knock spots off £2000-worth of Miyajima Shilabe, but at this sort of price it's a handy thing to have around (tracks rather well too). Chap is very accommodating on shipping options etc and speaks better English than your average Japan-based seller.
Anyway, fill yur boots ...

Looking at the CD player inside the rack (in particular), I think that stack system is more likely from the very late 80s/early 90s, than the 70s....

It wasn't the progeny of the equipment that I was referring to, it was Grant saying 'wives would like it' that was funny.
Think your right anyway will be very late '80s early '90s. And will probably go for a song which is a shame as it has obviously been well looked after.

Yeah, oi knowz.... I was simply stating what I thought the vintage was of the unit in question. Not sure all wives would like it though, as behind that big glass door lies a collection of major dust traps for 'er indoors to fret over! ;)

Philips speakers tend to be good, although that hard dome tweeter was not one of their best efforts. It works, but is a bit 'sizzly'. The speakers should be OK as a whole though.

I didn't mention the possibly slightly sizzly tweeter, as at this price, not really important. Might have tamed a bit after all these years!

These are extremely good. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/KEF-Corelli-Loudspeakers-Type-SP-1051-1970s-with-KEF-T27-SP1032-as-in-LS3-5A-/121655672422?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item1c533e3e66
A fairly scarce Classic (especially in that nick). They were a reference standard speaker in their time. Very classy sound and certainly punchier than their compact dimensions would suggest. I've always considered these the best and most refined implementation of the B200 main driver and T27 combination. Real transparency and detail.
I've had a couple of pairs of Ditton 44s and wouldn't bother again, the Pageants may not be quite as hefty, but they are far better tonally. The Ditton 33? Some like them, but I'm not keen on that tweeter.
cheers Geoff, ive got my eye on them, also theres another pair in better nick in crawley....is this fate calling me again :)

Connoiseur SAU2 pickup arm (tonearm). Sale ends tomorrow and bidding is up to £44. Will people not check things out? This is not a good arm. It has an inherent fault. The diagonal gimbal bearings cause the arm/headshell to tilt from side to side as it crosses the record, buggering up the azimuth.

That was the LMF-2 arm I believe, with carbon fibre headshell. Suited to highish/medium compliance cartridges. The plinth was a little 'plasticky' if I recall. I think it uses the Technics Matsushita DD motor common to many Technics TTs. Not sure if it's the same as the SL-1200, might be.

The "Black Widow" reference is complete nonsense. The arm is maybe just about on a par with a Linn LV-X.

I have taken an internal shot of both speakers, I was very careful not to damage the screw heads and used an exact fitting screw driver.
One b110 driver has date code for 74, the other 75, this would have been the norm, as these pre-date the speakers as they came out in 1976, meaning Rogers would have used mearurement-matched drivers from their stock and not consecutive numbers, and often not from the same batch.
Considering the serial numbers for these are 213 and 214, I doubt these are pre-production models if they came out proper in '76! Sounds to me more like someone replaced the drivers for any old B110s and now this guy is looking for a reason why the dates are off...

Probably the best presented set of LS3/5As I have seen: ex-review sample, complete with literature and original packaging. But £6,200 is an absurd amount to pay - there are plenty of BIN offers at between £1,000 - £1,500 a pair; and even those prices are too much.
Just what is it about the LS3/5As that commands these absurd prices? Is the BBC legacy, and if it is why don't other BBC designs fetch as much? Is it that the LS3/5As do offer the best SQ given their size? I don't know - does anyone?

If you put JBL 2213 into eBay, you'll find some of the 12" bass drivers available over the pond... and there is one for around £100 delivered.
With regards the 4311's listed, depending on the cabinet & crossover condition, the mid and high frequency drivers can easily be found too, so this might not be such an expensive project as it might first appear. It'll be interesting to see how much these go for, they are not that far from me either so I'm resisting the temptation to have a dabble and if I were to be successful, have Paul @ RFC sprinkle more of his magic speaker dust on them... :)

Crackers isn't it! Yes they are very good but not £6200 worth of good. Around the same price a a good pair of Quad57s might be reasonable but as they are going for under £600 these days, that is probably what they are worth soundwise. As I have said ad nauseum, I prefer my KEF101s after a careful comparison with my tutor's pair of Rogers at college. He used giant Tannoys at home but played us music at college with the LS35As. Enjoyable certainly but valued at cult levels not realistic prices.
PS Whoops, just noticed Paul's post. If you think this is likely to affect your mate's sale, I'll delete it.

That looks lovely Grant. I've heard a few CR Developments amps and each has sounded excellent.
I listened to one of their larger models driving a pair of Jean Marie Reynard 'Offrande' speakers (beautiful) years ago and I still rate that as one of the best sounds I've ever heard.
That one you've seen looks like an EL84 unit, so likely around 12 watts p/c output, but if it drives as well as a Leak Stereo 20 it'll be enough.
Apparently 15 good watts Geoff. has a phono stage fitted too. I guess I could get it for about £250; not that I really need it like...trying to talk myself out of it:eyebrows:

Well, I'm sure there's a perfectly rational explanation.
rare to find in this condition this was previously owned by a careful Hifi enthusiast who kept it in a console hence no case.
Is one to presume he threw the case away, with both care and enthusiasm?

£25 to £75 depending on condition ... anything beyond that is lunacy.
I knew a guy once tried to take his PL12D to the Max ... sent the arm to J7 to have it rewired and bearing fettled, kitted out the interior with sound deadening material, plus all the usual with fresh bearing oil etc. It sounded presentable - surprising, even - but a properly sorted Rega Planar or low end Technics DD would have seen it off easily. More than £75 (and that for a time warp museum piece) you'd have to have your head examined.
Think the average bay price varies from 35 to 125 depending but one very recently went for 220 untested.

This is an induced magnet type cartridge, but can to all intents and purposes be regarded as MM, as the basic principle is similar. Yes the Mission 774 (original version) works with the ADC 25. I've just been using my similar ADC 26 in a 774. Very fine it sounds. In my view, next to the Deccas, the ADCs are about as good as non MC carts get. I've not heard a Decca I'd call superior, they are just different sounding.
Whats the difference between the original and the lc version compliance wise Geoff.

Whats the difference between the original and the lc version compliance wise Geoff.
You had me baffled there for a minute Grant.
I take it you are referring to the Mission 774 arms. There are three versions (that I know of).
The original British made 774, low mass & optional fluid damping. Can be used with cartridges of virtually any compliance depending on damping setup.
Then the 774 LC, a low/medium mass Japanese made and not in the same league at all. More or less equivalent to Linn LV-X. Suited to medium compliance carts.
Lastly there's the (British made I believe) 774 SM/Mechanic arm, a close relative of the Zeta arm and heftily engineered, but not without problems apparently. I've heard of bearing troubles, but a good one is approaching SME V levels of performance. Suited to lowish compliance carts.
Needless to say the original (John Bicht) version is my choice. It just sounds excellent no matter what type or model of cartridge I install. From my ultra high compliance ADCs to low compliance ZYXs. I just use (if required) the appropriate level of damping.
thought that but wanted to be sure. Ask after; ask to late .cheers :)

Yes I saw that. I have my doubts. It looks as though a thinner cantilever tube has been shanked into the cut off stub of the original. The interface where the two tubes meet will produce an unpredictable effect on the signal. Possibly a peak or dip in response.
it looks perilously open to damage tbh. Pretty sure it would get bent within a month if not on fitting

I've heard that Audax bass driver in various applications and don't really get on with the sound it makes. As I say the upper end of the SD1 was OK, but I heard the bass cone colouration. Maybe they revised the design (crossover?) along the line and those are better.

Definitely in this case ... although fortunately not very often. Most of the time with private sellers the deal goes well and people are civilised if something goes wobbly but this one really annoyed me. Fair enough if he or she sold it elsewhere or dropped it of a great height - but it doesn't take much to send the only bidder at that point a 'sorry about that' message

Normally this means the seller wants more money and does not have a reserve price set ( because it costs more ) so they pull the plug 12 hours before the auction ends , after 12 hours you can't end a item on ebay

Not a bad price for the half-decent quality on offer. I don't need anything too 'serious' for downstairs sounds in the lounge :)

A dilemma. What do I do? I have too many speakers, but I've seen a pair on eBay I really want. Mind you they aren't very big. Can I really squeeze another pair in?
