:) - I'm using a TA-88 currently i rate it highly too the complete bookends system with a LA scala CD player & TT VERY VERY happy. You were lucky - we all were - my dad found a pair of maxims down the tip still remember them in the old PC system -

If ever a speaker was overrated. That's the one. You see them with asking prices of £500 to £600 now. Why?
They worked, but used cheap drive units and sounded nothing amazing. Those again were common at boot sales and went for peanuts. I preferred the Videoton Minimax 2, which was better made, but they were not marvellous either.

Exactly! Who in their right mind would spend that kind of money on these? That much would buy a very tidy pair of Tannoy Eatons for instance. And those have beautiful drivers in. You get your moneys worth.

I'm not sure there is a great deal of love for cashconverters on the forum but this Marantz 1050 amp looks nice at £50 if you are local- of course doesn't mean it will sound nice. The fact that the photo doesn't show the full face might mean there are hidden issues.

Cashconverters sell gear that is not tested properly. I know, as I've had to return Hi-Fi that was not working correctly. I've also repaired an old TT as best could for somebody, only to see it in that shop shortly after at a loony price, despite it being incomplete and barely functional.

Been wanting to try an older amp to go with a Thorens TD150/V15typeii for awhile now, clicked buy now on this for £170 including postage.Don't think it's the bargain of the century by any means but they usually seem to go for a bit more. Only 20 watts into 8ohms but I'm listening in a fairly small space. Any thoughts?
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/172620105513
It looks like in pristine condition Patrick. I came across some good reviews of this little amp a few times. Please share your thoughts once you get to listen to it ;)
Really looking forward to giving it a try, it certainly looks in decent condition and it won't make me bankrupt if turns out not to be so good sounding.
The Luxman 700 is a steal! Those things were very expensive when new. I don't see how you could go wrong! If you don't like it you could sell it for a profit. Sharp looking amp, I'm guessing it sounds good!

The pushed in tweeter dome is not good, but the bass drivers are totally wrong. They could be Richard Allen units (maybe).

On a different subject I nearly bought an SME V Tonearm for under £1300 from eBay last night, unsurprisingly it was sold when I looked a short time later.

Interesting that on the spec sheet they talk about 'apparent acoustic source'. 221mm behind the baffle. I have not seen that quoted before. Is it common to quote that for studio speakers? Or domestic speakers? Very precise measurement too. If I had to guess at mine it would be at least 300 mm. Difficult to judge really. How do they measure it so accurately?
walpurgis
12-04-2017, 22:08
How do they measure it so accurately?
Presumably the depth from the front of the cone to the back of the compression driver. Shouldn't be too difficult to measure. Not sure why anybody would actually need that bit of info though.
Although, giving a it a bit more study I find actually sat here listening that now some sounds are behind and some in front of the baffle.
Ahh. In that case perhaps I misinterpreted what was being stated. I was thinking of the illusory depth of the sound source. Which obviously changes from recording to recording. Thanks Geoff.

I don't know if you use Tannoys Andrew, but good ones definitely do portray image depth very well. If the acoustic in a recording has sounds 'to the back of the stage', they will sound like that and in some cases seemingly totally away from the speaker too.
No l have Goodmans Magisters. I have never had Tannoys. I think that the issue I have is that I find it difficult to 'feel' the sound source going back beyond the wall behind the speakers. It's an almost psychological barrier. Perhaps easier in the dark! Or with my eyes shut.
walpurgis
12-04-2017, 22:41
Ha. I know the Magisters. They are good fun in a big beefy way. Not the greatest at imaging though. A good pair are well worth hanging onto.
There's a good dodge with those. Pick up a pair of Celestion HF1300 tweeters, preferably 16 ohm. Wire them in parallel to the main speaker terminals with a capacitor of around 2uF in series and sit them one on top of each the main speaker cabinets, pointing upwards. It may seem unlikely, but it adds huge ambience and acoustic. It works with the Magnums too. If the effect is too pronounced, halve the capacitor value.
Thanks for the dodge Geoff, although I have to say they are already far from original. Having thought about the original statement I was struggling to make with regard to depth in the image. I think an analogy with film or television might be apt. If you watch a film of a road going into the distance, you are aware that you are looking at maybe many miles of depth in the image, but also aware at the same time that you are looking at a screen just a few feet away. Both 'realities' co- exist. I think that is what happens with sound when I sit in front of my speakers. There is depth, but at the same time I know where the sound is coming from. I have not heard huge amounts of speakers, but certainly none that just disappear.

Decent speaker. Probably well worth that kind of money. Mid units prone to surround rot, but fixable.

They are in a different league to the Pageants, a serious attempt at a wider bandwidth, lower colouration speaker. I had the use of a pair for a few weeks years ago and really enjoyed them. IIRC these were about £600 when the Pageant was about £170.... They would be probably £3K ish today!

It sounded fine in this application IIRC, but these are 3 way and the mid unit will be handling some of the range which the Isophon would if in a 2 way.
Think Spendors/Rogers BBC but on steroids with much greater power handling, bass extension and oomph if you've never heard them before... This is of course from memory and a long time ago... If I were in your shoes I'd get them and then decide which set to sell on as I don't think you would loose money on these or the MA's... No idea what the 66's stand you at...
your a very bad man!

I nearly bought a pair many years ago. Though I ended up with a pair of Chartwell PM400 speakers instead for some reason, which were even bigger. They were good, but I never did find the bigger speaker I actually wanted, the original Spendor S100 (I'd still like a pair actually :)).
well im just off to look at them now.:)

Why not just get a Denon PMA-350SE for about £60 and enjoy some remarkably good sound and plenty of poke. It may not be the ultimate amp, but it's damn good and you won't find much to better it under £400. If you're lucky, you may get one with the very good optional phono stage.

Someone who likes 'something different' will probably buy it...
My first turntable was a BD1 kit on a home made wooden plinth.
The arm was from Goldring Lenco turntable.
GL 75 was it?
Cartridge was a Goldring 850.
Total outlay was approx £35/£40 back in 1969.
That is about £600 today.

I remember my first 'table back in 1975, a BIC. It was all plastic for the most part, but had a gimbal bearing on the tonearm. Super simple! And it worked. Didn't sound bad from what I remember. My sister was 5 years older, and she was always jealous that her boyfriends would rather listen to my stereo when they stopped by the house. But you're right! You could buy a lot more for your money back then. There were some very nice tables out back in '69. My cousin had one that could find the space between tracks with a laser! An ADC? If you pushed 3, it would play the third track, that was rocket science back then!

I have two pairs, agree with the above, but they are certainly much better than the Chorale, Cantor or Coda which I also have.
In fact I seem to hear the Bextrene 'quack' in most speakers that use that material, however, in a few it is reduced to a very low level that is almost imperceptible. One of these speakers is my Rogers LS3/6 fitted with Dalesford units, this effectively makes them identical to early Rogers Export Monitors. My Chartwell LS3/5a's suffer from the 'quack' only very slightly more.
Does anyone hear coloration like this from polypropylene?

I'm familiar with 'bextrene quack', having had many older KEF's and B&W's. But I don't find it noticeable on my Corellis.

The only speakers that I have that use polypropylene cones are Rogers LS2 and LS7, to me the LS2 is coloured in a different way, a bit further up the frequency compared to the Bextrene coned units. The LS7 similar colouration, but to a lesser extent when compared with the LS2.
As my friend's late Dad said;

A scam, or possibly a scamola.

Looks suspicious to me!

It's reported and eBay needs to take it down - god knows how many people have sent money via moneygram to him. No way of tracing the recipient. It says located in US,/but postage says from Hong Kong. But the eBay invoice he sent me (not eBay) came from a British email account. In his email ( he sent 4) he says he had supplied the details to eBay so I was covered by my purchase (which I'd never made).
In the listing it says he will remove any bids because he wants buy it now - all said in an image so bots don't find it.
It's a scam without doubt -looking at his other items I'd say everything is stolen or taken from other listings or its a hijacked account.
Agree $1,500 is a suspiciously low price for such an item. The arm alone could easily fetch that.
farflungstar
09-05-2017, 15:08
Having looked at the 'eBay' email he sent me it has my registered delivery address on it. How can he have obtained it? He says he has told eBay about the purchase to enrol us in buyer protection and that they have contacted me - they haven't and according to my account I've not made a purchase.
The moneygram payment is to be sent to an address in Cardiff, a guy called Samuel Still. Yet the turntable is in California or China?
If I was in the UK I'd probably call the Cardiff police and ask them to investigate.
Confused.
Ok I just checked the email address the 'ebay' email was sent from, it was registered with a domain company called namecheap in MAY of this year.
Unfortunately there is no way to explain everything to eBay - just a crappy report item form with pre defined reasons. This guy is scamming people and somehow getting their registered details.
Angry.

There's a similar scam for a pair of McIntosh MC275 amps on U.K. EBay. I've reported them about 10 times to EBay. Being sold under different accounts each time. Someone must have hacked a lot of EBay accounts.

09-05-2017, 20:12
What worries me is that the fake email this guy sent me had my delivery address - the only way he could have it is if he hacked my account. If I report that then my account will be out of use for up to 6 weeks. Though it may be the only way to shut him down.
The frustrating thing is that here in Spain I could get a tel number on eBay.co.uk but when I dialed it it cut me dead because I was calling from Spain and we are supposed to have our own number - but the Spanish site is different and no way could I get hold of it to report this tw*t.
I've changed my passwords on eBay and PayPal - but maybe if I report it as hacked more action will be taken.
EBay is crap at dealing with this.

So do I - and the spare 13k to buy it.
Lovely amp, I bet it performs well.
Re Ebay, I think they are pretty idiotic. A few years ago I sold about 10 pairs of ex BBC and Rogers speakers for a friend which he had accumulated, we using Ebay for selling.
After the sales my account was frozen and I was accused of stealing them, followed by Paypal freezing my account and accusing me of money laundering.
Ebay asked me to to prove ownership, and fortunately my friend had receipts for most, many purchased from, yes, Ebay, so they actually had records themselves of these events.
I had to threaten Paypal with litigation, and eventually they reinstated me, and gave me £50 compensation.
The really ridiculous part is that they asked me to get my bank to verify me, who would only do so by post, whilst Paypal would only accept communication by Email, so they wouldn't talk to each other, and I was stuck in the middle.
Concerning eBay emails please do not sign in using the links in the email, always switch to a browser or app. Reason being some scam emails being apparently sent from eBay will ask you to log in by pressing on a link within the email, your log in details will be stolen by a third party...I cannot stress this enough. eBay will not help if any money is stolen through this method your PayPal if connected will be vulnerable too.

Rare-----there are 14 others on eBay at the moment and 5 are in better condition, but mine has the highest asking price.
But its still hugely popular, it puts seller s and buyers together like nothing else! I have ben lucky so far on ebay I suppose, though I did buy a
