He keeps relisting this but not reducing it! Trouble is, Hi-Fi Do in Japan are only asking half this when they have one. The last one they had was a couple of weeks ago and I missed it thanks to us being without telephone or broadband at home for a week! Cheers, BT...

Yeah. It is on the rare side. People always seem to ask a fortune for them. Dunno why. I've heard the Paragon suite and it was horrendous. Dreadfully coloured and underdamped. It has a real 'honk' to it! Curiosity or collector value only. The drive units used are pretty good though. It's the cabinet that's the problem.

About 12 years ago I heard a Denon mini system, quite impressed with it especially the speakers. Later found out that they were made for Denon by JPW.

I've a strong feeling Bakabunghippo (the seller) is a well known and trusted seller/trader in the traditional world of hifi, ex-BBC with many of those types of contacts. Pretty sure it's the same guy who has/had a big stand at the Tonbridge Audiojumble twice a year (though I haven't been for about 5 years). So they're likely ok on that basis not that I'd encourage spending that sort of money without fully checking such doubts out!

Here's a new ruse!

VINTAGE AUDIO HIFI FUSE (http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/VF-LAWSON-VINTAGE-AUDIO-HIFI-FUSE-VERY-NICE-SOUND-QUALITY-5A-UK-PLUG-SIZE-/201519332257) - err, an old common house fuse that might have come out of the plug from some hifi, perhaps.

If you miss it, don't worry, the seller has another MK 3A "Vintage Audio Hifi Fuse".

Now, if we can get the right forum threads going, we can create demand for vintage fuses which have only had audio mains going through and therefore have been conditioned correctly for amazing results!

Indeed, Andy. Gorgeous things, and a bit of a Billy Bargain, if you ask me! Especially for anyone wanting a 'proper' pair of Tannoys... Quite simply, for £3k, no modern speakers would get *anywhere near* to achieving what those GRFs can do with music :nono:

Indeed, the seller is selling himself WAY short, IMO, most likely to encourage a UK sale and collection in person. He'd more likely get double that from a Jap buyer on ebay, but then would have the not inconsiderable task of trying to get them there in one piece....

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3000Lm-XM-L-T6-LED-Zoom-Rechargeable-Flashlight-Torch-Light-Chargers-Battery-Box-/252197243230?hash=item3ab820895e:g:am8AAOSwSdZWc3X 4

It comes in it's own plastic box . Also included is 2 rechargeable Li-on batteries and a little cradle which holds 3 AAA batteries . It also comes with a mains box for the Li-on batteries .
Also included are a wallwart charger and a car charger . Both chargers can also be plugged in to the torch directly for charging on the go .

The body of the torch is quite robust aluminium and it's claimed to be water resistant . The beam can be adjusted and the torch has 5 different settings . On the highest setting the light this thing gives off is excellent . I'm not an expert in these things , however this torch would certainly give me all the light needed in most situations . Good VFM methinks .

The cork fascia tiling makes for a good dartboard surround. All you need do is cover the driver with a board and off you go...:D

Seriously? Grilles on? Vile. Grills off - not actually too bad.

If you look at this photo of the Goodmans Triaxiom 212C, all becomes clear. They were just a rebadged variant for Lafayette.

Still not true 'three way' though, seeing as the tweeter cone is just an extension of the main cone and not a separate driver.

The 405 is not bad if one replaces the original op amp with at least the op amp from the 405-2, costs peanuts.

S.

Almost any speakers that don't require a terrific grip of the bass, some, not many bass reflex systems tend to be slightly boomy. My Tannoys are fine, although reflex. LS3/6 has tighter bass on 405-2, but rest of the freq range I prefer 303.

I have so many, but Quad ESL57's, LS3/5a, LS3/6, Tannoy HPD315, JR149, my Quad ESL63's have developed a fault, so can't use them.

I have four 303's, can't think why!

The first TV my parents had was a McMichael, the second was dual-standard Thorn EMI. The latter was a switchable 405/625 line set; the switching was so complicated it was unreliable to the effect that the set spent more time in the service department than it did at home!

Funny that quite a few here have connections with GEC, shame that the Company is sort of gone. When I started it was plain GEC, then became GEC Marconi, then Marconi Avionics, then BAE SYSTEMS, all this time I was in the same dept doing the same job. After I left an Italian firm (Selex) took over our work.

I remember having a 405 line Bush TV, that was numerous decades ago, not a bad set for the time. Later I had the ITT/ KB Featherlight 12" portable TV, also a good set. In the 70's I bought an ITT / KB Tiny portable radio, again pretty good.

He was a very clever guy, but alas got Parkinsons and never worked again. they held his job for years hoping he would recover... that was many moons ago. Good firm..... locally we had Plessey factory , which was situated a stones throw from where I live. they had many thousands on the payrol

Not really surprising as the then GEC-Marconi Company was the largest electronics company in the UK. I worked at the Marconi Research Laboratories for thirty years, and during that time spent some time at Marconi Communications Limited and at the GEC Hirst Research Centre.

I think I left one name change out, somewhere in-between the names I gave was also Marconi Defence Systems Ltd. Yes, the Company did look after sick people, hoping that they might return. I knew several.

Now Plessey, when they closed their last factory, and I think GEC bought them out, all salvageable Plessey equipment was brought to our site. I was asked if any equipment was suitable for our Dept. I looked at it and everything was too outdated for us. Didn't want anything.

Not hifi I know , I bought this torch on Ebay the other day and it's very good VFM indeed .

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/3000Lm-XM-L-T6-LED-Zoom-Rechargeable-Flashlight-Torch-Light-Chargers-Battery-Box-/252197243230?hash=item3ab820895e:g:am8AAOSwSdZWc3X 4

Mine arrived today Brian. Super value and nice torch. 2 big recharge batteries alone are worth money I guess

They're not very good, can't be easily used without the matching power amp that is its power source, the phono adaptor does not appear to be present and somebody has drilled a row of holes along the top of the case. Besides, it's worth maybe £50 max anyway!

Well, a Cadet and some reasonably sensitive speakers can sound good. The Junior Stereo power amp is a very sweet sounding amp.

Rogers Master power and is very nice, up there with Radford STA25 III, and I have both. In fact the Master used Radford transformers.

I was not keen on their early transistor amps Ravensbourne and Ravensbrook, bit rough at the top end.

The Master power amp looks like it could be of a different breed though. Certainly very rare indeed!

Standard one here... 2 or 3 valve ones as well. They sound better than Troughlines or Quad valve tuners IMHO but pretty lousy sensitivity and "pre-set" switched tuning only... fine tune is by a control on top of the chassis protruding from an RF shielding can, variable inductance. If you have a strong signal and are happy to be tuned to the same station all the time they sound good though. Much more impressive than the amps. I once used one for quite a while years ago with a stereo decoder I made.

Ravensbourne FET2 is very good sounding, quite sensitive too. It has green markings on the perspex dial, as against white makings on the dial for the older Ravensbourne tuner.

Strange thing is, later when the FM4 came out, I bought one of those. I felt the only improvement on the Ravensbourne FET2 was the push button tuning. And, now, the FM4 has a fault, not been able fix it yet. Of course the Ravensbourne FET2 still works fine.

I looked at my old cans, they all look much like that one, but one has "Pratts" name on it, true.

That one seems to have been "done up" mine is more like the ROP one, similar colour.

I also have Redline, National Bezlole, and Shell cans, all look similar.

These were all my later Father's, I needed them recently after filling my car with fuel recently, the wrong fuel. I filled the tank with diesel, about 8 gallons, it's a petrol car.

Amazingly, the car got me home and survived, 26 year old Volvo.

Did you have trouble stopping the engine?

lol! yes, a little bit of running on. It was certainly pinking quite a bit, that's probably an understatement.

The engine must be knackered. You can get away with running a diesel on petrol but not the other way around.

I'm surprised it got you home Alex . This certainly wouldn't have worked in a new car . Years ago I borrowed ny brothers car and did the same thing . I put a couple of gallons of diesel into the tank and then had to fill the tank with petrol to dilute the diesel . Worked , but cost me a little bit more than I expected :(

It has been OK, runs the same as before the incident, has over 200,000 miles on the clock.

Neither are good.

A petrol car will work if a fuel tank is partly topped up with diesel. It will run, but smoke like mad. Damage is unlikely. If the concentration of diesel is high the engine won't run as the fuel won't ignite.

Trying to run a diesel on petrol will almost certainly cause damage. The fuel will detonate as opposed to burn properly and the solvent effect of petrol will strip lubricating film from the bores and damage seals.

Drained out the diesel using a small cheap fuel pump bought on ebay, gave the diesel to a friend with an old diesel Merc.

Cost was just the pump and the diesel that I gave away. I was pretty lucky.

My tank was pretty low on petrol when I filled near full with diesel. Once I had realised what I had done, I guessed that if I stopped the engine, it might not re-start. Obviously it was not running smoothly, so I pulled out the choke (remember them!) slightly to give an increased idle speed.

Yes, smoking a lot getting it home, luckily it was at night, not so obvious and I did not have very far to travel,

When I was a mechanic on the lorries ( many years ago:) ) we added a gallon of petrol to the diesel tank to stop the fuel from ' freezing '.
I discovered later that the fuel didn't actually freeze , the wax which in previous years had been removed to make candles , separated from the diesel when it reached a certain temperature and blocked the fuel lines.

The stand pipe in the fuel tank lifts up fuel from the lowest point of the tank first . Chances are you were using the pure petrol at the bottom of the tank first Alex . As you travelled there would then be a mixture of petrol and Diesel and lastly pure diesel as it moved nearer the bottom . Chances are there was some petrol being burnt for a while .

I remember many years ago, you could buy lorry fuel tank warmers. Many were imported from Russia where they were regularly used because of the low temperatures. They were just small paraffin burners really. Bet they caused a fire or two! :)

Yes, this is what happened, after a while I reckon it was running on near pure diesel.
