Shame the original 'oatmeal' grille cloth has been replaced and there's no picture showing the drive units, so no way of telling if they are OK. Doped fabric surrounds on the bass drivers I believe, they are usually sound. They were very musical little speakers, if not that refined.

I think the grills are genuine and original. They were an alternative to the oatmeal linen at least in the UK. I had a pair of AR6s with the same brown grills.

Those are not AR grille cloths. I remember a brown alternative, but those shown on the AR4Xa speakers is the cheap Tygan type stuff that used to be sold in electrical shops (note the faint stripey effect). I used it myself.

Here's a pic of mine. I thought them identical to the 4xa's currently on ebay.

Well, well. That does look like the cloth on the AR4XAs. It's not one I remember. I recall a plain brown with a slight fleck like the oatmeal ones.

Refoamed the'll be a decent speaker although pretty sure the were veneered.

The AR7s come close to the AR4x in overall quality, and the bass end is very similar.
My early '7s have veneered cabinets. I understand the later ones had a plastic veneer-like finish.
I always think it is a little sad to see what looks like wood, but isn't.

Strange, various things, including what is the multimeter reading indicating? I believe a genuine LS3/5a would read less than 15 Ohms.

I couldn't quite make out what these speakers were trying to be.
A sort of 'poor man's LS3/5a' or something else?
There is quite a market for small loudspeakers that look and sound like the little BBC speakers.

Yes. I wondered about these. They didn't fetch a fortune though. I see the listing made no mention of the 'period' SEAS tweeter, which is probably not a bad choice to match with the B110, assuming the crossover is adequate.

Just poking about in the eBay vinyl. I see 'Aerial' by Kate Bush is not quite commanding the prices it was a year ago. Due no doubt to the Rolf Harris thing. Shame, in some ways it's a superb album (yes, I know it's a 'Marmite' record, some of you hate it). Strangely, I prefer it on CD.

I've just pulled my 405 out of the bag I've been keeping it in. It looks a bit sad for itself. Need to get it serviced, I think. I was considering using it with my denon pma 700ae as a pre-amp. Just because. We'll see. Lots of faffing with speaker wire.

Yeah, I get that, dude, which is why I wrote what I did in the last part of my post. I totally get the originality thing :)

However, the ebay sale Andy linked to is just a jumble of 'old bits', not specific to any vintage amp, which is why I said, what's the point?

Marco.

I saved (they were being thrown out, because they are old!) quite a few Belling Lee plugs (and sockets).
When I tested them to find out whether they were silver plated, I was quite amazed at the amount of silver used - heavy plating, although not sure if they were plated on to copper or brass (I would guess copper).

The plugs have an interesting double "clip"/expansion band? (for want of a better word) to ensure good contact with the socket wall and are ok for soldering.
The Belling Lee's I have are 4mm diameter and give a secure fit in 4mm sockets.

The number of them in the job lot would be a bargain for whoever bought them in the auction, not just for originality - they are a bloody good plug.

Not "unique" as the seller says though, I've seen them before. I've considered making one myself, but not from steel. Hard wood arrow shafts are the right thickness and less likely to add too much mass. Steel near sensitive cartridges is not something I'd be happy with.

Used to have a couple of stable platters, though not that far up the ladder Nigel. The denon I have is lazy at reading again when it has been off or if you change formats etc. Great sounding machines but unreliable. Due to getting the Monarchy dac it has rekindled my cd interest damn it:) sure something will come along b4 I snuff it .....maybe:D

Yes it was the only one; a tangential version of their biotracer range. TBH they were nothing special in comparison to price and were a pain to the point of fling it in the bin if anything went wrong with the arm, but if you get a good one for a reasonable price they are good enough.

I got mine second hand from a wammer I think for a larf myself. With right speakers it is quite decent although it doesn't use the valves very much/ just one side of them. if mammory serves it likes 8 ohm ones.:eyebrows: handy for a spare or tester though and surprisingly robust

Lol… The point is, they are two totally different speakers with different electrical characteristics and different amplifier requirements, which consequently sound totally different!!

I know because there were 15” Reds originally inside my Lockwood cabs, which sounded nothing like my Golds (pre or post crossover mods). Therefore, to claim that both speakers advertised sound the same is nonsense, and as such, you’d be sat listening to two different sounds coming out of each speaker…………..

And with the Elton John connection downplayed...I wonder why?!?!
And the Red driver is one of the late ones - non hammerite, strawberry/pinkish magnet cover - that collectors seem to rate only a little above golds...Still, despite the impedance mismatch and the different crossover we are assured once again that sound wise you simply cannot tell the difference...
So that's alright then.

Thats those speakers again Geoff

as said I think they show the box and some electronics but no drivers tells a story.

These are cabs from GEC metal coned loudspeakers. Originally each contained two 8" ish metal coned drivers, one with a tweeter screwed into the pole piece. Inside a felt baffle hung down, about midway between the drivers and the back. From the cabinetry and the felt baffle (which I think was a Briggs design), the cabs might well have originated with Wharefdale, but made specially for GEC.

The pair I have had blown drivers, the tweeters were ok, and the cabs I've retained with the vague idea of Frankensteining some interesting drivers in at some future date...Tannoy DC2000's with knackered cabinets but ok drivers for little money were on the lookout list as potential donors.

Annoyingly I've got loads of Tannoy 12" DC's but they're too big to go in.
And in all honesty, it's not that high priority as a project.
Something will come along at sometime and that'll do when it does.

Thats really nice of you to offer, but there's cut outs for two 8inch drivers per cab - hence my fancying dc2000's, which have an 8 inch dual and effectively the same speaker sans hf running as a bass helper, just the arrangement these GEC's originally had.

I've actually had two pairs of dc2000 at various times - I know they have a less than stellar rep, but decryers should hear them hung off the end of a Krell KSA100. But whatever the GEC cabs end up holding, they'll just be a fun thing, not serious contenders, unless some cabinet deadening and reinforcement went on! They're a good shape but not very thick walled.

Your Eagle/Corals are undoubtedly much too good! But thanks again.

Yes, I know the wiring looks dodgy. I was just setting them up and testing before finalising the wiring etc.

That's a pair of tiny horn tweeters below the main drivers, set to come in above 12kHz.

Geoff,

Did you have an afro same time that pic was taken?

Yes, there was, it was nice but wasn't in the same league really. The cone did not have a fixed phase plug, just a dustcap.

The cheaper 'Flat' series of drivers were rather good. They had pressed steel chassis. Here's a Flat 10:

Is this a second generation DIP - it looks different from the 'classic'

I was browsing this ,when it struck me , how exactly the same the rear of the arm was , to my HMV 8000 deck ,and a Ferguson belt drive one I have too !!
They both have s shaped arms, ( Shure M75-6S carts )which I find much more appealing
Turns out to be a BSR incarnation in NAD colours :)
