Very sought after and worth over a million pounds each. this really does represent a bargain. With a lick of Hammerite and a touch with a wire brush you could double your outlay. They may look and sound like shite but don't be fooled!

Rogers speakers in my view were very good, don't think I have ever heard a bad one.

These were a bargain, early models with the better quality cabinets, full LS3/6 crossovers:

You'll have to change your signature Dan to include a fourth system. :)

I see you're still using the Technics SB-30 speakers. Those nice little drivers are crying out for bigger boxes. It's worth a try.

I've heard Rogers LS7's extensively and I don't like them at all... I found them 'lumpy' (I don't know if that makes any sense!) in the bass and very brash and unrefined to be honest

I believe they were quite expensive when new but I didn't rate them at all

There's a record shop in Leeds, in the basement they have some Rogers up on wall brackets with an original Naim Nait. Sounds really good. Not sure what the model is, two way with an 8 inch driver. Can't recall hearing any other of their speakers ever.

I was given a pair of LS4as, but they didn't inspire me.
Some speakers 'work' for me, others don't.
A pair of original Wharefdale Diamonds I used for years in my University Lab.
really connected me with the music.
A pair of 'LS3/5a type' speakers from Stirling Broadcast ( bought from an AOS Member ) really didn't
connect.
As I have said before, each to his own...

Basically. They are rubbish! And he's got the name wrong. It's 'Studiocraft' not Soundcraft. Studiocraft were a budget offshoot speaker range from Bose in the seventies. They employed cheap 'n nasty drive units. The front grilles were non-removable, so they can't be checked, but I'd bet the foam cone surrounds are falling apart.

Good amp this !

I built these back in the 90's when I worked at LFD.

I'm sure, although not 100% that the Mistral LE has the same transformer and heatsink as the bigger LFD amps like Int LE and PA2 etc, and it actually gives around 80-90watts per channel (into 8 ohms).

I'd need to see an inside pic to confirm this though..

I see neither Anthony nor indeed Marco has come on to talk about this one so I thought I'd attempt to provide some context here ... this is not one of Anthony's famous ground up creations (aka 'Copper Amp'), rather it's one of several Tube Distrinctions/AoS branded, modified versions of Chinese-made amps. That's not to say it isn't good, but while it uses some of Anthony's mods to the circuit, it still uses the original Chinese transformers and is therefore ultimately limited in what it can do.

I had one of Anthony's modded amps for a while (actually a modded Puresound P30) and it actualy saw off some serious competition ... this was not the same as this one listed on ebay - though I have heard one of this design and considered the one I had to be quite a bit better ... but while good, a Copper Amp it most certainly wasn't. (Copper amp is probably £5k plus - and you get what you pay for).

I think the price in this listing is ambitious I'd be looking about £750 sort of mark for this one if I was going for it. Something to bear in mind.

There is no 'best' type of turntable. Good belt drive, idler drive and direct drive designs can each offer great performance.

The Rega is not even remotely in the same league. I've compared them.

No rumble or audible noise at all from the Toshiba. Typical smooth direct drive silence.

This is a pretty hefty turntable by the way. It weighs half as much again as a Technics SL-1200. The motor apparently is the same item as used in the classic Pioneer PL-71, so it can't be bad.

In my humble opinion, I owned an Inspire Quest which is basically an improved Rega. It was brilliant but the Toshiba is twice as good. Easily. If you have the money for a decent arm I guarantee you'll be pleased with the Toshiba

You can still occasionally pick up a 774 for around £200, but they have been fetching a fair bit more here and there. (probably my fault :))

They are relatively easy to set up and there's a mountain of advice available here on the forum.

Yes. You would definitely hear a difference. To what degree would depend largely on how decent your cartridge is.

I've had the 774 sounding marvelous with a £1200 MC cart on it.

The TT and a £300 ish 774 would be over what I'd planned to spend, slap a £1200 cartridge on it I'll be washing dishes for several lifetimes! Ignorance is bliss! Lol

ALL YOUR BASE BELONG TO US !!!

Actually not everyone here is a 774 lover, if it were me I'd stick a Jelco 750 D on it, far more flexible in practical terms, and more suitable for higher-mass cartridges. (And in my view a better arm but that's an argument I'm not going to win here!)
I flirted with the idea of a Jelco but got talked out of it.

Slip of the fingers there when I wrote higher mass I meant lower compliance, it if of course the tonearm that's higher mass.

I'm actuallly a huge fan of the Jelco, out of the box it's a superb arm, but with one of the Ammonite Audio collars, possibly a rewire (copper is fine and much cheaper than silver) and bearing fettle at Audio Origami, it's a giant killer.

And lots of options as well, 9in, 10in, 12in, different arm weight combinations and none of the hassle you get with 'vintage' arms. Better than many, many of the older arms that people get all nostalgic over.

thats really refreshing to hear! particularly the last bit!
ive had 2 774 arms and whilst they are good,to me they just dont have the 'look' the cartridge always looks odd when mounted too the tiny block. aesthetics matter to me as well as the sound.

These belong to a mate of mine from work who is a former BBC studio manager. Apart from an easily polishable fade on the tops, they are mint and are the quite rare Swisstone made version. Well worth a look. He had a bid from someone in Taiwan with no feedback and cancelled it.

I don't know, these are pretty rare, with the stands too. I agree he won't sell them at that price, £500 would be more realistic, but compared to what you would get new for a grand there is a lot of speaker there for the money.

To me that says they aren't worth the asking price, don't get me wrong they're a nice pair of speakers, i had some Sony APM speakers in the late 80's, hence my interest, but even then they weren't £1000 pair, i'd pay about £200 or £300 max, just cos somethings rare doesn't mean it automatically should be worth a fortune.

she didnt know the value off the tt at that point, that is why the ad was placed at £100,she has had over 300 emails, 1 person wanted to come down from newcastle,1 travel up from cornwall! others were saying i'll give you £50 more than your asking etc. pure greed if you ask me,sometimes its nice to do the right thing in life and help someone out. thats not directed to anyone on here, just saying. peace back at ya!

Oh Sorry.

thats the trouble though 300 emails  just goes to show how many of us are doing this type of thing but best of luck to her...though as you can see i already have a MK1 so really didnt need another this one is big enough haha. how are the 66's recap go well?

last one on ebay went for 650 by looks of it so maybe a tad hopeful but you never know. They do increase in price like the 774. its nudging 350 plus now maybe more for a good one. Seem 3009s doing 300 plus as well. Brexitt prices I guess.

I wonder if it will fetch as much as my Saturnalia 'Magical Love' picture album, with the rarer spiral lable and booklet, or my mint Kate Bush 'Aerial' original release? :)

(amongst many others. What's an unopened, clingfilmed HFP audiophile copy of Floyd's 'Wish You Were Here' worth, or Rickie Lee Jones first album?)

I have that Album, there are some good tracks on there, not all good. Sawdust Caesar, Sad road to the see, Freelance Fiend ,but the title track, err no.
The holy grail for me would be Indian Summer- LP. Once saw 'Just another diamond day' original go for over a grand on the Bay, nuts, just nuts....

You've got the Decca pressing? It will go for thousands.

I agre about it being an average album. Freelance Fiend is an amazing riff, but the rest is bordering on rubbish.

You have great taste in music, btw.

Goldring Lenco GL85 at £399.99! What nonsense. It's not a very good turntable and certainly not one of the 'classic' idler drive units. The platters are prone to warping and you can't get parts for these either.

If you put a low bid in, you won't get them. There will be potential buyers who'll have spotted them and primed their bid snipers with close to asking price bids. At the asking price they are worth grabbing anyway. The Eatons are very nice (even if you do have to pay the congestion charge to pick them up). Quite tempted myself actually, they are only about ten miles from me, but do I really need a third pair of Tannoys? :)

It's getting a bit crazy out there isn't it , now many people will say that a turntable that cost no more than about £20 in its day is never worth the best part of £2000 in todays money, and they have a very good point. However if you look at it the other way how much would a 301 cost if was manufactured today ? ?....double the price? I should think so .Now I am not advocating that we should all be paying that sort of money for a 301, far from it ! £2000 is mad, but if you put one in a good plinth and if you put a uni pivot arm on it and a good moving magnet cartridge it's with out doubt one of the most engaging front ends I have ever heard. At any price , but it's a fact that these turntables are going up in price, and if you'r ears tell you that this turntable is for you buy one now , they usually go for £600 to £900 and that is a very good one (ore should be! )at those prices , from a engineering, and listening point of view its a very good buy . As are many classics . Technics sl 110
( no not the 1210!) ...........sp15 and sp10 and a few more that can hold there own against most of what's being made today. My oldest son wanted to buy a turntable he was looking at £1000/£1500, I gave him some of my experiences and advised him on a td 124 with an rb 250 or a second hand origin ol 1, just to get things rolling , the front end would be sorted. ....He would only have to upgrade the arm and cartridg in the future and as he was very impressed with my 124/ origin ol1......so he went to a dealer and bought a grands worth of .project turntable with arm and cartridge. It sounds ok........ oh dear !

I paid £25 for my first white 301, which came with an SME 3009, V15 Shure, Leak Troughline tuner, Varislope 2 pre-amp and Stereo 20 power amp, all in a big sixties cabinet. Mind you, that was over thirty years ago.

My silver 301 cost me £30 about five years later.

And the 401 in SME 2000 plinth with SME 3009 arm was £60, also about 25 years ago.

My Goldring Lenco G88 cost £12 and the G99 cost £18, both bought twenty years ago or more.

Just goes to show how prices have gone.
