Actually. If I should decide to go for another TT. It would likely be something from Nottingham Analogue. I love their products, the design all makes sense (and so does the sound).

Just in case. If you're looking at DC2000 or DC3000. Don't bother. They are not great. The DC1000 is better.

Looks like surface oxidation of the Plastiflex cone doping. Not uncommon. A clean with a damp cloth and a wipe with furniture polish and it disappears.

They are way overpriced!

Yes. I've seen those. I bet they sound lovely. Those fifties and sixties hard paper coned European drivers definitely seem to have something special.

I have a pair of sixties Isophon 10 x 6 inch full range units that sound excellent and of course the Philips units ditto.

I'd imagine the rating at the time they were made could well have been 8 to 10 watts, bearing in mind the normally modest outputs of the valve amps of the time. This means little in every day use terms though, as the sensitivity is likely to be in the mid nineties (decibels) or even higher bearing in mind the 3ohm impedance, so you'll never get them loud enough to hurt them. The WAD will work with them. Possibly best on a 4ohm tap if you've got one, but it certainly won't hurt the amp.

If you fancy them, why not contact the seller and ask if they'd consider an offer? You might get them for less.

I've had a few dealings with Jordan Watts drivers. Including brand new ones from the factory in Hayes, just up the road from me. They were a flawed design. The front foam/vinyl cone suspension was prone to coming loose. The rear beryllium copper tri-spring suspension went out of alignment easily and is a bugger to get straight again and the box shaped enclosing alloy basket caused nasty refiective colourations. They still seem to fetch silly prices though.

I never liked the amp either and could never work out why all the magazines at the time raved about it so much...

Because, like the also favoured NAD 3020, it was forgiving of the inadequacies of the items it was likely to be matched with in the average system, simply due to its bland dullness. i.e., it was a 'safe' recommendation.

You might be right there Geoff

I hated the 8000A with a passion... It always sounded 'thin' and nasty to me... never tried the NAD...

Its the name I think that sells them. I have bid on the ones we discussed yesterday. the guy is German I think. Look like I may get em. he thinks they would be fine as the impedence will change in the box etc and likely go up towards 5/6 ohms... their nominal 8 wattt

Have you considered using a 'bid sniper'? I use Goofbid: http://www.goofbid.com/

It's free, easy to use and stops you getting carried away and placing silly bids :). I normally decide my bid amount and select a five second lead in. Some think it's unfair, but I don't see it that way. After all, you can still be outbid. It also has the advantage of not showing your hand and encouraging others to try and outbid you. I've won a few goodies with it.

I used to use one Geoff. forgot which now and yes Its not really unfair although annoying if your on the receiving end. but if you really want then you have to bid higher. No one has touched them since they've been on and thats a while now. he said himself that the drivers are pretty much unknown over here but are rated highly in Germany. Might have cut my throat by publishing it here but its only fair I suppose.

I snipe bid highish anyway. Most of the time it works. Just never bid more than the item is worth to you. I'm happy to pay comparatively over the odds sometimes, if I decide I'm definitely having something.

Another Mission 774 arm. This one has the scarce solid counterweight.

It's in Frinton on Sea, which is actually 'The Lost World' due to it's vaguely defined and largely unexplored territory. They still send missionaries out there. Some make it back.

I do my own 'sniping'; usually within a few seconds of the end time. I usually bid what I think the item is worth, but if I really want it I might set a maximum bid of twice or three times that amount. Not always successful, but I have won quite a few items that way. (And if I am outbid because the winning bidder has set a higher maximum figure than me, then I have the consolation that the winning bidder will be a bit surprised/shocked at what he has to pay! :D Not a particularly noble sentiment - but we're all human.)

I usually do similar. I decide on my top bit and put it in in the last 10 seconds. if a sniper gets it then so be it. These programs have kinda caused me to save a lot of money due to being outbid lol

Mission 774 tonearms are rather in demand recently. Not surprisingly. What else can you get for sensible money that competes. Nothing! I guess we'll see prices continue rising. Funny really. I paid £200 for my first one about twenty five years ago. A bit over the odds back then for a used one, but I wanted it. It turned out to sound better than the Ittok I had on my 401, so the Ittok went (and some modded Rega arms) and the 774 has been here since (along with a couple more --- just in case :)).

Isn't that rather an 'arse about face' way of doing things? Just have the new bits sent and fit 'em yourself.

Worth doing. The AR competes with anything up to an LP12 (not that I'm a fan of LP12s). The only other belt drive TT I'd consider at around the same sort of price as the AR, is the now quite scarce Manticore Mantra, which is a bit special. Don't know why, but it just manages to sound better than most other belters. The Heybrook TT2 is excellent too, but fetches a bit more as a rule.

That could be right. I don't know what kind of tolerance AR bearings were specified at or if they used high viscosity lube. Did you try neat STP? That would certainly help take up slack and do no harm as long as there are no speed issues.

If you say that they'll probably tell you to clear off. just go in and ask to look at it. Then wobble the platter to see if there's slack. By the way, your AR should only display slack whilst the bearing is dry (cleaned out). If it's slack when lubricated, you either have too low a viscosity oil or the bearing is knackered.

Mind you, a lot will depend on packing skills. Perhaps a modest remuneration scale could be applied.

I know Cornwall pretty well, but I've not been to Bude. Stayed at Polzeath along the coast from there.

Very nice little vintage Rotel integrated amp. RA-820 at only £35. I had one of these. The sound quality is remarkable for what was a budget item. Mine sounded bloody marvellous driving a big pair of horn speakers. Well worth grabbing.

I was keeping quiet about these with a view to buying them. A pair of boxed Corellis in what looks like mint condition. Probably the best of the earlier 'C' Series KEFs. More tonally accurate than the now sought after R103 & R104 variants. These are very good indeed. Think LS3/5a with bass and you'll be about right.

Not familiar with that unit, but looking at pictures on the internet, to me DSB 208 cone looks a bit different, not so deep, a bit less flared, slightly different texture.

Looking at the paper coned B200 really made me think Elac.

Well, to me the paper coned B200 did not seem to have the magic of the old Elac units, but there was a fair old time gap in the comparison.

I used the Elac 8N148 0r 8N185 in the Hi Fi News Paraline design. The Elac and the Lowther PM6 were the only recommended units for this speaker.

I'm gonna put it on my RD80/LVX

worked out to approx. £85 all in unless I get stung by the HMRC as it's coming from the Canaries

I wouldn't buy them as I am sure you could get a nice new set of boxes made for that sort of money which would probably be better ;)

Lol! Well, that's where I'm afraid you're wrong - not in the sense of not liking the look of the cabinets (as that's a personal thing), but as Nial was saying, if you want to hear what, say, a pair of 15" Monitor Golds *really* sound like, then trust me, there are NO better cabinets out there - and they could easily be cosmetically refurbished.

Yes, £450 may *appear* to be a lot of dosh for some empty cabs, but not when using them will transform your 15" Tannoy DCs, sonically, into ones able to compete with (and in some areas outperform) speakers from Tannoy's current Prestige range, which cost considerably more!! ;)

And I can say that as a Lockwood Major user (with 15" MGs) who's heard umpteen pairs of modern Tannoys. With vintage speakers, sometimes you have to be prepared to put some effort in to get the right rewards... You can't just expect them to be 'plug & play', or for them always to look lovely :)

Marco.

They are pretty rare and collectable now and have a surprisingly large sound for a small speaker. I've had a couple of pairs. Definitely worth grabbing at that price.

Price looks sensible.

If you are throwing the cabinets away then don't bother with 12in Golds. 12in HPDs are better and cheaper. 15in Golds and 12in HPDs can be made to perform very similarly, but the 12ins HPDs cost less and take up less space..

Been there, done that, owned them all, in about six different cabinet combinations. These speakers worth about the price of the drivers which is maybe £800.

They're rubbish Bev. These are just an example of 'white van man' speakers. Sold in supermarket carparks by cowboys.
