While we're on the subject of WTF?? pricing, I did spot this the other day:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/255807515127?hash=item3b8f50e9f7:g:YXoAAOSw1rNjYs~ b&amdata=enc%3AAQAHAAAA4NLJ4rdg4YhEIQp3I85tLWj%2F5il %2FbFFEVLR5xHSMY0f6wkMTQQkyLZSHSKCSCnAan2lvjbSmwGF JRRm%2FBvlKesmVAZK9zz2HAmZivaxdqid9JSG2%2BmSm9eEEE K2giCTH8LzmyGEo00PFK3%2FB4E3aJSUFLI8M87yjorATUzFxZ Me5uUEK38NIP%2BgN9lZLj69nZeD0e06nM7bwTnOdhpN9MhPcw 5%2FNXcFWkPCwCMcAWc%2BKthvJapYKhG%2Fk3MTa9YjnHtloT SiyAI3UUL56IcDcGFnee%2FKhAql3bvLm4KgK6%2Bcp%7Ctkp% 3ABk9SR6qLufy3YQ
It does make me wonder who would, in their right mind, expect so much money for the items and, how 'thick' any buyer would be to pay such an inflated price.

I expect you have three of them already. :D
I wish! I have a 4002 but 4000s are out of my price range these days.
I should never have sold the one I had…
There are two or three Beolit radios for sale. I've always admired their styling, but there are more important things for me to spend money on at the moment. :(

They may be unusual, but don't look a particularly high quality build. As Martin suggests, the price is a joke.

Me and dad are thinking they are a homemade

Anything is possible, but they look manufactured to me.
I'm interested to see how much this Sony TA-88 goes for:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/394437125415?hash=item5bd648e527:g:HhQAAOSwi-5j1YEg
Already up to £70 even though it is untested and sold spares or repair. I used to have one, fully working, plus two of the matching tuners that light up orange and green
Proper stuff but the amp only has 10 watts or something. I sold it for twenty notes and I think I gave the tuners away. Stupid of me.

I had a couple of those and the similarly sized Goodmans Maxamp, all boot sale jobs bought for peanuts.
Got mine out the local paper I think I paid a fiver. Some old boy having a clear-out.
That was about 1992 though, when being on a fiver an hour was considered good money. Well round here it was, anyway.
That Sony amp sold for £85

TDL RTL2 floorstanding speakers in Greenford, West London. Starting price £20, no bids yet, potential bargain.
These are good speakers. No view of the drivers, which hopefully are original and undamaged. Declon acoustic foam in ports missing (no big deal).

I should pay more attention, I missed that. Not beyond sorting though, I'd take the wrap off the backs carefully with a hot air gun and use that to repair the top/tops. The backs can be done black.

They look like they'll come up mint with a bit of a clean.
That system is near identical to what the landlord of my student digs used: GL75 (with, I think a Shure M75) via a Leak Stereo 70 into a KEF Kit 3 with a cast cement enclosure.
The Leak Stereo 30 will sound pretty dated now. Based on a design by Jack Dinsdale, it used germanium transistors.

'Made in Norway' - got to be a story behind that. Captive speaker cable suggests they were part of a low price music centre. The fancy Sony ones didn't have captive leads on the speakers.

Seeing the Shure M75ED takes me back to my student days. Had one for a while before getting a Shure V15/III, which was considered to be the best available.
After that, I abandoned Shure and turned my attention to ADC (an ADC25 and 26, as well as a couple of 10E/IVs), Ortofon (SL15E/II) and Decca (Blue). Still have most of these cartridges.

Nice collector's item here. Sony 5011 turntable, built by Lenco and looks like an L75 derived arm on an L72 base/platter assembly.
Looks in super condition, I'd quite like it :).

I suppose it comes down to how handy you are at building speakers and also just what the drivers are. My garage and car port are already full of assorted cack that looks like it might come in handy one day. If I added those speakers to the pile Mrs. P would probably leave me, or more likely give me grief and not make me any tea.

Well they look pretty tidy, but not how I expect vintage Tannoys to look. Just look like some run of the mill reflex speakers with Tannoy badges. How much should they be?

Well they wouldn't interest me even at fifty quid, but I guess these days a realistic price would be around £150 to £200. They're nothing special, I had a pair years ago that I sold for £60.
betting either of my homemade ones with the 10" alnico's would beat them hands down.

These Dynaudio Contour 1.3 Mk.II speakers hold their value. There are a few pairs on ebay at around £1000, which is nigh on what they cost new twenty years ago!

I bought a brand new set around 2003 for a bit under £1200 from Audio T. Didn't keep them all that long, I didn't like them. Nicely built, but raspy treble and boomy bass from the rear port.

That is a bargain. I have a four-shelf version (though currently missing glass for bottom shelf, previous owner boshed it). Really deep shelves, will carry almost anything. If I lived near Grimsby I'd be having this, if only for the glass :)

Interesting cabinet design too.
There was a Dr Bailey in the 1970s who produced some transmission line designs, possibly some other types too (before my time). So might be one of his.
Don't think he had a company actually making speakers, they were designs for DIYers I think.
Dr Bailey pioneered the use of 'long hair wool' in transmission-line speakers. Radford & Dr A R Bailey took out a patent for the first transmission line loudspeaker. It had earlier been the subject of an article in Wireless World (Oct. 1965) - 'A Non-resonant Loudspeaker Enclosure'
He was consultant to Radford Acoustics, and designed the first successful Radford solid-state amplifier: the Radford SCA30.

I remember John Bowers demonstrating the then new Bowers & Wilkins DM2 speaker in the early seventies at a Hi-Fi show and he was emphasising the importance of the use of long fibre wool in the (1/8 wavelength) transmission line. The speaker had one side made of clear perspex so the effects at various frequencies could be demonstrated with the use of a strobe light to 'freeze' or slow the wave movement through the line damping wool . It was very convincing. The partial phase inversion could clearly be seen from the bass cone movement to the line end wool movement.

They look like Tannoy Westminster Royal cabinets, which would have had 15 inch drivers and cost around thirty grand. Blowed if I'd put anything but Tannoy drivers in them. The sides have the backloading horn exits.

I saw this item for sale on my (internet) travels. VERY VERY tempting. Also relatively close by, certainly worth the trip.
The drivers seem to be Jenson 12 inch field coil drivers judging from the markings on the rear of a driver. The auction does not appear to include the necessary DC power supply but I guess they could be made up. Or dump the FC drivers and insert some decent Tannoys in them.
I wonder if the cabs were made up by Steve at Magna Audio?

You'd be wise to establish that they have the correct SP1063 (I think) version of the B200 bass/mid driver as it's not unheard of for the SP1014 from the KEF Chorale to be substituted as a replacement.

I know exactly what you mean Sandy, a while ago I tried to describe this urban shite-talking in a post, and I don't think anyone knew what I was on about. It's a kind of 'gang-talk' largely heard coming from young black and Asian males, and Grime artists like Stormzy and Dizzee Rascal.
Yoofs everywhere seem to be adopting it because they think it's cool. I just think they sound like simpletons.
'Urban Shite-Talking' - got to be a PhD in there for someone. Probably a fat white bird in an ethnic hat and a shawl.

No chance, not when the superior Acoustra 2500 are listed elsewhere for 15 quid less. Which are described in the listing as 'high end'. Speakers don't come any better than high end.

You'd be wise to establish that they have the correct SP1063 (I think) version of the B200 bass/mid driver as it's not unheard of for the SP1014 from the KEF Chorale to be substituted as a replacement.
I believe that the only difference is that the 1063 has an aluminium voice coil and the 1014 has copper. I could be wrong though!

Yes, I think that's largely it, but the cone doping looks slightly different.
On early KEF Bextrene cones B110 and B200, doping is obviously brush painted, but on later B110 and B200 it looks like it's sprayed.
In the mid 70's I accidentally burnt the coil of a B200 SP1014 which had brush painted dope (with a new Quad 405). I sent it back to KEF for repair, and it came back with what looked like sprayed doping. So I sent back the other B200 for the same treatment.
My thoughts are that the brush painted doping sounds better than the sprayed doping, it possibly breaks up the resonances better.

That's quite likely: brushed doping will not be so uniform as spray doping, so will probably dampen more harmonics.

The 1063 in the Corelli have brush doped cones, I'm looking at some now. I do think the coating might be thinner though.
Possible KEF went the same way as B&W, they started spraying their cones after a few years. I had some of their DW200 drive units from the DM4 and the later ones were definitely spray doped.
(the DM4 is not a patch on the Corelli by the way :))

I have two pairs of Corelli here, just looked at one pair, definitely brush painted B200's, but neatly done so, almost so neat as almost spray looking.
I prefer the treble and midrange from the DM4, the Corelli mid sounds a bit quacky to me, in fact I find that with all B200's.
My early B&W DM2's have brushed doping, but later DM2's (and DM2a's) that I have look spray doped. My early DM4's are brush doped, not sure about my later ones, can't get to them! but I think they are spray doped.
I'll have to have a look at my B&W DM2a speakers.

Tape decks - I never got past a budget JVC and a budget Sony, by the time I had money tape was all over.
Gave the deck and all my tapes away, including some blanks still in the shrink wrap - probably should have held onto the blanks!
still got a tape separate upstairs and tapes etc.. its a drawer front loading denon.

Think the best all round I had was a Teac, can't recall for sure the model (A-360?), but it was the one below the A-450. Had a few Tandbergs too.
Had a Sony machine (can't recall the model) which allowed me to make recordings which were as good as those I used to make on my Ferrograph reel-to-reel machine.
The Sony was later replaced by Nakamichi machines which I had calibrated for TDK MA tape. Made about 100 recordings with them, mostly off the radio.
Still have the two machines as well as the tapes (somewhere).

Still have a few cassette tape decks, some the belts have gone (turned to goo) still working are Tandberg TCD 300, Pioneer CT? (fairly basic), JVC KD21D, JVCKD10 and a very early basic Sony (top loader). The most used was the JVC KD21D, although an inexpensive machine, with the right tape, recordings were excellent, better than the TCD300.

This is the tape deck I had in the early 80s. Got it for £99 in an end-of-line sale, funded by part of the money I'd saved to buy an engagement ring :( For a couple of years i had no t/t, just this for recordings off the radio and some pre-recorded tapes. i still think it looks pretty cool, and I've no idea what happened to it.
It had something called ANRS/Super ANRS, which was sort of like Dolby NR IIRC.

The fluorescent level meters look the same as were fitted on my Sony machine, including the highest maximum level segments of the two rows momentarily remaining.
Good looking deck that is. Can't fault JVC don't think they ever made a bad separate component.

Just a bit! - If the cabs had been sanded down and re-varnished to a good standard then maybe £200 would be fair - the B200 drivers are worth a bit on their own. But they haven't even bothered to do that.

I believe they are the SP1022 large magnet version of the KEF B200 as originally used in the KEF Cadenza model. They are fairly easy to come by.

Is it likely to be a relatively easy fix by someone competent? The last thing I need is some landfill to add to my growing amplifier collection.
Depends what is wrong with it, and if parts are still available. But I would have thought any decent repair engineer would be able to fix it for you.

I would prefer to use John Sampson at JS Audio. He is an ex-MF engineer, and has a good rep with repairs/upgrades to MF kit. Or maybe just ask Alan Firebottle to have a play with it.
In any case I would not bid much on it, and there are already quite a few bids on it. I'll keep an eye on it, see how it goes.

A question - is there some way i can see how much items sold for on Ebay? With an amp I was looking at a couple of weeks ago, the bidding went past what I was prepared to shell out pretty quickly, so I stopped looking. It has now re-appeared with a BIN price of £450  (due to previous auction-winner being a time waster).
Just curious.
search for the amp type. then top left click on advanced. tick the completed items, or sold items depending on what you want and search again. the title will still be in.. it should show all recent sales in green i think..
completed is ones where money passes hands etc. sold is nt i think

I think it is the other way round? Completed just ran the course with no sale and sold...sold?
okay looked it up
Completed is everything that sold or did not sell and where the auction or BIN listing has ended but is still visible on the site.
Sold is just the stuff that sold and where the listing is still visible on the site.
yeah but if the price is in green in completed it sold and paid
yeah but if the price is in green in completed it sold and paid
yes since 'completed' also includes all the sold items. Which I didn't know.
I only ever search on 'sold' anyway. That's where to get the price someone was actually willing to pay without trawling through what didn't sell too.

Thanks guys, doing what you said i found the item in question (Musical Fidelity A5). The bids went to £463 for this non-working unit (just £90 less than my functioning and cosmetically perfect example cost me). But the winning bidder backed out I guess, maybe got caught up in a bidding war then came to his senses.
On a buy it now for £450, about 300 quid more than I would have risked on it.

Not worth it even though Alan could probably fix it in ten minutes - lots of good working amps for less.

So I could buy that vintage sleeve then get a new copy from Amazon complete with inserts to put into the sleeve. But then I've chucked £8050 at the idea, so it's starting to look like poor vfm. Anyway I bought a new copy about three years ago, cost me less then £30.

Looking further, there are a couple of places selling this model brand new for £949 and £999. I'd still pick the Elite Audio one though because it's been run in. Reviews suggest they sound a bit shit when new.
And Elite Audio was the firm that offered me £1400 for that Audion Silver Night amp when I couldn't get more than £900 anywhere else, so might be good folk to deal with.

just stuff, you could always get another. The lost friends are irreplaceable, though.

Very true. I would much rather have my music-loving friend still alive, than his collection of CDs he left me.

I know - I was just agreeing with you.
Not mine, I just spotted it in an idle moment.
With an A&R P77 and an ADC magnesium headshell, it has to be a bargain at £200.
Has the earlier steel chassis, always my preference.

He's asking way to much IMO. Sweet amp but no power at all - you'd have to pick your speakers very carefully.

Pretty tidy. I wouldn't let the distance put me off - I'd make collection part of a weekend away, Launceston looks quite nice.

all I know about it is there is a FedEx depot there.
Even the worst bits of Cornwall are better than where we're from so doubt you can go wrong.

I would tend to agree with you, if I hadn't visited Penzance. Every other street corner was populated with what appeared to be homeless bagheads, some of which were sufficiently sentient to openly beg, the rest either unconscious or regarding their surroundings with a 'thousand yard stare'. The public toilets all had signs warning of discarded syringes.
And when we tried to leave, their weird road system did its very best to keep us there. Rather like Jim Carrey in The Truman Show.

Sounds exactly like round here except with palm trees and better weather. Oh and they closed our public toilets years ago because they cost money that could be better spent on lesbians or something. They're a band practice room now.

Yeah I don't think it'll be lesbians, they really don't cost much to maintain. But disabled, cyclists, ethnic minorities, any group specific enough to have its own 'community', lots of opportunities for public money intended for wheelchair access, cycle lanes and community centres to go walkabout.
In Preston it's the cycling (fraternity? community?) that's had the most money chucked at it. Much of the dual carriageway running through the city is now 2-way single carriageway, with the other side devoted to 2 wheels. And this pic shows just a small part of what they've done here. All they need now is some cyclists willing to use it.

just a massive waste of money. The road up to work has cycle lanes both sides, rarely see them used. Last time I saw a cyclist on one was months back and he was going the wrong way.
They're all on the pavement, weaving in and out between the pedestrians at reckless speeds.

you wanna check out brighton if you like cycle lanes, its mental!
I noticed on the main junction I cross every day they've upgraded the 'Walk' sign to this:
https://i.ibb.co/M9FD0gg/green-pedestrian-and-cyclist-traffic-crossing-lights-AN3-C0-H.jpg (https://ibb.co/hC3Rzgg)
Why? In what circumstance would it be safe for a pedestrian to cross and not for a cyclist to do so?
When would it be safe for the cyclist to cross but not the pedestrian?
Just a colossal waste of my money.

Especially as the cyclists will completely ignore it anyway.
Apart from the small issue of death/serious injury, it's all stacked in the cyclists' favour - if a bike and a car had a coming-together and it was the car driver's fault, his insurers would have him in a world of financial pain. Whereas if it was the cyclist's fault he'd just do a runner. Cheaper to abandon his thousand quid (probably stolen) bike than cough up for repairs to the car.
Though I do appreciate that these will be the minority, and most cyclists are responsible adults with adequate insurance cover.
Worse than that - cyclists are not subject to the Highway Code or of the associated laws.
As displayed by an incident a few years ago when a cyclist killed a pedestrian, the cyclist could not be charged with manslaughter, and was eventually charged with some arcane law going back to the 18th century concerning horse riding!
Not ebay but check out these speakers:

They've got a lot of pretty tidy speakers but don't get your hopes up, they're in America.
And with a 30" woofer, I bet they fart and belch like a trooper! ;)
Marco’s Tannoys earned the nickname “wardrobes” but those take it to the next level and then some!

Cannot agree - a 30" speaker cone is not rigid enough. Better to have four 15" units wired in a series parallel combination: will have the same effective diameter and move as much air, yet be stiffer.

It's like they got two confessional boxes from an old church and turned them into speakers.

After hearing some Canton speakers at the last NEBO, and then Ken (Qwin) buying some from abroad, I thought these might be worth posting. A couple of scuffs which could probably be fixed cheaply, otherwise they look very tidy. Not the same as Ken's but similar.

Look great, but the amp doesn't have a lot of welly (22 wpc). My mate has a TA-2650, which looks almost exactly the same and makes 43 wpc. He has it going into some B&W DM603s I gave him, and the combination isn't great. Not horrible, just very un-dynamic with weedy bass. And I know they weren't like that with my old MF Electra E100.
There's a cassette deck that will go with them, and if put together with some speakers that don't ask much would make a handsome little vintage set up for not a lot of money.
