Thought it was for storing vinyl in initially... At that power your gonna need seriously big speakers and an even bigger house...oh yes and no wife or neighbours

Pah - it's only 250wpc  ... my speakers are rated up to 400w
No neighbours. Wifey is cool with amps.
I might need a forklift truck to move it, though. :(
400 watt speakers lol! My telefunkens are rated 8 watt...go plenty loud

Rated up to 400w.
But the best amp I have ever heard with them is my current setup - about 10wpc max from the amp

Yep, the Yarland.
Still looking for a 2nd, but new input valves added a bit of extra pep so I don't really need to bi-amp now. Would be fun to try, though.

Some of the best sounds I've heard have come from systems using maybe 20 watts. Big amps give control, scale and authority with matching lowish efficiency modern speakers. Big power 'impresses', but does it deliver music?

Description :
The Tannoy J95 ia a tall, floorstanding loudspeaker finished in real wood veneers. The cabinet size and construction together with the driver configuration produces a fast accurate bass with good dynamic response and low overhang. Additional damping and mass loading is facilitated by a space at the base which may be fill with dry sand or lead shot. By reducing the centre of gravity this, together with the floor coupling spikes, keeps the speakers from rocking and thus reducing the dynamic quality of the system.

The arm looks like a Decca FFSS/Garrard headshell 'mongrel'! :D
It's not the tidiest example, but I reckon there'll be a mad scramble of bids right at the end and it will sell for around £400.

Interestingly, it is a genuine arm. It's a version of the Deram tonearm (which could, obviously only take a plug-in Deram ceramic cartridge) but meant that you could fit any cartridge.

There was an add on bias compensator that was available. I may have bits of it left somewhere. My brother's Decca arm was bought new, was first used with a Shure M44/7. later a M55E, then an M75ED and Garrard 301. Pretty good results

JBL 4410s in a neglected but saveable state. Assuming the drivers are ok - and there's enough spares included to be confident of getting one good set out of them all - these can be restomodded into very serious speakers. I restored a pair a few years ago to excellent effect.
You need to:
Reinforce the cabs internally - anywhere you can feel cabinet talk when they're playing put a strut in. And chuck away the fiberglass wadding.
Solder all push connector connections, rear terminals, speaker and crossover.
Dampen the metal port tube so it doesn't ring anymore - I used bike inner tube.
Attend to any driver issues.
Do all this and they're twice the speaker.

Lent to my parents, I still often hear the pair I did. They replaced Bariks in their system, the Bariks now in the conservatory wringing out the wee wee. Hung off the end of a good amp these are outstanding speakers.

Well, I must like them as I'm on my third and I love it! They're great fun to use and although they have a reputation for terrible unreliability, in my experience this is largely unfounded. People tell tales of the two ASICS that run the whole thing dying but I have never come across this. The only troublesome parts can be the photoelectric sensors for the arm - on power-up, the deck goes through a cycle to position the arm on the rest and reset itself, so that the control system 'knows' where the arm is. If one of the sensors fails, then it cannot complete this cycle and will sit there unresponsive.
Frankly, as this one is complete with its ultrasonic remote control handset and receiver unit, if you're tempted then I'd wade in with an offer. In fact, as it's just down the road from me, I might have a go myself... :eyebrows:
I'm not tempted by the ADC, I just thought it looked interesting and not a silly price so if you are interested why not put an offer in.

There is software smart enough to identify a gap between tracks such as VinylStudio which is what I've used in the past.
Won't stop it sounding crap though!

I used to use something that came with my Xitel Inport. but it doesn't work under Win 8+ or even vista for all I know as I ran XP over newer machines until the death.. It was quite good at sorting the spaces between tracks, but often got it wrong or almost right and then it could take forever to get it all sorted.
A good editor is Audacity but I have found it has a steep learning curve (for me ) that I've never really got to grips with.

Yes. I saw that and mentioned it last time this G88 was listed. I was informed it is a Decca Deram arm. I thought it was a modified FFSS arm. Interestingly, there are currently three G88 turntables listed at the moment. They are usually scarce.

Not these days Grant. The going price for a clean and complete GL78 bare TT unit is around £90 to £120 these days. Marginally less than the slightly more desirable, but no more capable GL75. Prices have been zooming lately. Justifiably one could say. They are great turntables that offer outstanding sound quality and have been much underestimated for a very long time. They also have a huge upgrading potential, which as you'll know, I'm in the process of showing.

One of the earliest eBay scams I heard of concerned expensive items like games consoles being sold for what was apparently absurdly low knock-down prices.
The listing said something along the lines of 'what you see is what you get' ... the winning bidders received just that, a printout of the item picture....

Yeah. It's ridiculous. I remember seeing these at boot sales for a song, along with many of the other now overpriced 'vintage classics' gear. I turned down a pair of LS3/5a speakers for £20 years ago. Bought a pair of Tannoy IIILZs for £50 instead. :)

The sellotape holding the cones up suggests they may have been used like that. I'd not be surprised if the coils have rubbed in the magnet gap and shorted. As parts for restoration they'd be OK though. I'd not pay more than £200 (if I actually wanted them :)).

Odd that the photos don't show these with the grilles off. I bet the vinyl surrounds on the drivers have distorted, as they regularly do on old Goodmans speaker units (and EMI ones), regardless of use. They can even detach from the cone or chassis due to shrinkage.

Yes it seems even the low mass jobbies that went out of fashion for a bit are getting pricey now - 's vintage syndrome again .... there was a bloke on the Lenco forum asking a grand or something silly for an SME III saying it was the best arm in the world or some nonsense. Somehow I don't think it sold ....
Yes sorry to hear about the heart trouble Ali ... I had a bit of bother myself a year or so back, lots of chest pain and 4 stents in the end, they told me one artery was 95% blocked, the other 99% and I was weeks away from a major MI ... but got through it. The EMF connection is worrying though ....
