Probably. I'd be surprised if they break $40 with local pickup as the only option. Kefs are pretty rare here. Most people don't know what they are. I see them at the thrift stores more than I do on Craigslist.

I've seen some ridiculously expensive stuff on that site that had no business being in a Thrift Store.

I bought a $2,000 microscope for $7 a few weeks ago.

Seem to have a plinth on the bottom which implies a floorstander. I suppose we will never know.

It's not a plinth. It's a short grille.

I'm fairly sure there was a taller model with similar drivers. Could have been Calinda 2.

Given that God hasn't made an appearance for over 2000 years, he's had plenty of time to perfect the amp so I'm not surprised that Geoff rates it. Nonetheless, I feel this amp is a surprisingly low key launchpad for the second coming. One thing is clear, audiophiles must be the chosen people.

From looking at the double tape deck I would say full size. Would have cost over a bag of sand back in the 'Nineties. £50 is pretty good value.

I know. The heatsink isn't big enough for one either. I'm not expecting much for $10 delivered. I already have a PSU. It will probably end up as spare parts, unless it lives up to it's claims.

Can't agree with that. With the damping utilised the 774 has no "mismatch" to lower compliance cartidges. That's the point of the design. It's not a compromise, it's an effective solution.

Not ebay - i was contacted by a guy that does local house clearances bought HI-FI from him before including a very nice NAK - he sent me a text said he's got a marantz CD67 "Original SE" - so a text later to confirm buying - i picked up after 9am this morning - new plug and shes singing - nice the guys not interested in this stuff and let me have it for £10...:)

Just dig out the original remote i kept - this alone is worth a million quid you know! haha some prices of some remotes a getting OTT...:mental:

I've been unloading my albums from the 90s as they're being re-released. The prices on some of those are nuts. I think I must have been the only person still buying them.

Yep they are the real goldmine stuff. I have a few as I was buying vinyl right to the bitter end, in about 1996. Hanging on to mine, will flog 'em to fund retirement - if I make it that far.

The reissues sound better than the originals in most cases. I think the 90s ones were cut from the same master as the CD. I don't like that they are splitting some of them into dual albums for no reason. If they're doing it to increase the dynamics it makes sense. Most of them I've bought recently don't have enough runtime to justify it.

Quite honestly, idiot collectors make my blood boil. You can bet if some OCD-afflicted clown pays £900 for this record it won't be listened to, it'll be blood catalogued, filed away and its value recorded in a spreadsheet somewhere.

All these people are doing is spoiling it for the rest of us who buy records to play and to listen to.

Listed as JBL4410A monitors...actually 4412As, with the 12" bass driver. A give away price for 4412s. Reputation is deeper bass but not as tight.
Tatty cabs which would respond to a bit of TLC, and one tweeter is either not original or a replacement to a different spec. Tweeter are easily available on ebay, usually from the states.
Still, great fixer-uppers and could make someone very happy indeed.

Nah I'm with Marco on this one that deck is crying out for an FR-64 (probably the FX in bad boy black).

Marco
12-03-2017, 23:34
Nice T/T, shame about the arm! ;)

More seriously, I think the 774 sounds good, but I just don't like how it looks. I like to see a nice 'fat' headshell stuck onto the end of a tonearm, so the Mission's 'minimalist' approach, in that respect, isn't for me.

I'd have put one of Denon's own broadcast arms (with detachable headshell), or an FR-64, on that T/T. Each to his own her own, I guess! :)

Marco.

Just checked the prices of the FR64's, I think I'll just stick to my Mission, as much as I'd like to try a Fidelity Research arm, at £1000+ I don't think it would be 4x better than the 774, however if anyone is selling an FR64 for around £500 let me know 😉

Lol, I like what the Mission does but then again I've only compared it to the stock arm which although isn't as good as the Mission I'm considering putting it back on just because it looks right if you know what I mean, the Mission looks odd on the Techie though, the FR54/64 would look 'right'. I think I've just admitted to liking the style/colour of an 'S' arm 😀

Marco
13-03-2017, 08:47
I can easily imagine the Mission outperforming the stock Technics arm. There's no comparison, really. Therefore, I'd stick with using the Mission until (if) you find something even better that suits your T/T's aesthetics.

If you're on the lookout for a quality S-shaped arm, and want to stick with the vintage option, but something cheaper than an FR, which will sound and look superb, rather than a modern arm like a Jelco, then consider those from Micro-Seiki, and the Denon arms I mentioned earlier, such as this little beauty, which can be found on the likes of German ebay for around £150:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/922/oNsFT1.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/pmoNsFT1j)

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/921/P2EYYZ.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/plP2EYYZj)

Nice simple, classic vintage looks.

And that's only one of the many arms that Denon did. There are even nicer ones available, such as the DA-309:

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/924/EYVI7o.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/poEYVI7oj)

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/924/6YoxYG.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/po6YoxYGj)

http://imagizer.imageshack.us/v2/xq90/921/8FVgrX.jpg (https://imageshack.com/i/pl8FVgrXj)

That, or something else of its ilk, is what I'd have fitted to the Denon T/T shown earlier. It's what should accompany any classic Jap D/D turntable. Fit a DL-103 to one of those and you'd be in sonic heaven!

Marco.

Look like M1 to me, not Tannoys finest hour, your 603 will be way better, Imo of course.

Funnily enough I think I got 40 quid for mine as well. Mine weren't fantastic sounding at all,

walpurgis
22-03-2017, 00:10
Lucky guy!

The HPD295A is the most underrated Tannoy dual concentric of all. It's basically a 12" Monitor Gold magnet/tweeter assembly with a ten inch frame and cone fitted. The rubber surrounds are a big advantage and the doping to the rear of the cone removes much of the slightly 'woody' colouration that the 12" Gold and HPD have. Generally seen only in the Eaton cabinet, which is a slight shame, as it performs so much better in a bigger box!! The bass perfomance is actually better than the 12" Monitor Gold, sounding tighter and deeper.

Yes. The BD103 is rare, but only because they couldn't sell them. Against the comparatively priced German and Japanese decks of the time it looked home made.

The SMEIII is the least popular model from that maker (so far).

And the Stanton is OK (ish), but nothing desperately exciting.

maybe people are bidding with their hearts, have you read the description ?
yep, i thought that, but the cynic in me thinks otherwise, but if the statement is true, then all good if people want to bid.

Krell KSA80B nr Worcester. No interest to date, would be a silly bargain at £500

I doubt it. I had about ten carts at the time and only used it now and then. It was in mint condition when I bought it. Don't think Grant put much mileage on it either.

It's a lovely sounding MC. I rated it as being alongside my ZYX R50 Bloom. I've been tempted to buy it back actually :).

I switched between a few carts at the time I owned it, so unsure how many hours I added but I don't think more than 50 hours but that's a guess.

Dealing with another ebay idiot. I bought a pair of speaker stands that were described as 'collection in person only'. I've asked for address details twice without getting a reply. The seller now has these marked as 'order dispatched'. What the fuck is going on? I really hate morons!! :steam:
