i emailed the seller this afternoon. they were michael palin/monty python's speakers at some point in their life and the seller needed to move then on as quick as possible, i gave him a reasonable offer and he has accepted.
pick them up tomorrow! can't really afford it and ill need to shift some gear on, but i have wanted to see what the tannoy noise is all about.
exciting...
Nice. You'll like those.
The HPD 295A driver is a beautiful thing and a proper member of the true 'pepperpot' dual concentric family, it is basically a 12" Monitor Gold with a ten inch chassis and cone. The rubber cone surrounds never seem to wear out either.
They need to be on stands though, get them up highish on something stable with the central tweeter at or just below ear height when you are seated.
The rear connections are bare wire spring clips and a bit of a pain, so worth upgrading to 4mm banana socket, unless you're a stickler for originality.
I used mine with the treble controls on level and preferred the grilles off.

Cheers for the advice. I'm hoping they live up to their reputation. If so, I should be able to get at least half of the cost back by selling on the Curas.
I'm not sure if blue grilles and (what looks like) pale green paint is original, so I have no problem changing the clips to decent bananas - I assume it is easy enough?
I'll will also probably place them on some 200mm X 200mm (300mm high) oak beam blocks that I have until I have the means to get some higher stands.
I'll let you know how I get on...

Just looked at the photos again. White cabinets with blue grilles was a standard option. Quite rare though.
The rear connectors look as though they've had the tops broken and just had wires soldered to them. Not a big deal. Banana sockets will be easy to fit, you can just do a wire twist joint for now to try them out. Cover them with insulating tape to avoid shorts.
I've used these in the past, they're OK. http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/2x-Gold-Speaker-Binding-Posts-Terminals-4mm-Connectors-Gold-Plated-banana-socket-/330976836212?hash=item4d0fc1ba74:g:mG0AAOSwzOxUYj2 l
What will you be driving the Tannoys with?
martian sunrise
25-01-2017, 22:52
Interesting. I saw one speaker had soldered wires hanging off.
I'll be driving them with a pioneer sa-9500 (similar age, I think)
used those too. they are fine and good value.

Yeah. The Pioneer dates from about then. You may find that the Eatons want -1 on the treble 'energy' control. Jap amps can sound a little forward at the top with Tannoys I've found. You won't like what the 'roll'off' control does, you lose top end.

The Excellent play back was probably via that old Mitsi Vertical tracker with the unmentioned bent cantilever he's now got up for sale. All those rice crispies and click noises are supposed to be there.. retro innit. :D

They are in and I have had three hours of listening. They are really something. The difference in presentation between these and the Curas is astonishing. They go a lot lower than the Curas, but the Curas seem to be a lot tighter and seem to have a different way of serving up treble. However, the imaging of the Eatons leaves them for dead and the midrange is incredible. A big improvement at lower volume too
It will take some getting used to...
[edit- you were right about winding the treble back, too, btw]

Hi all,
As you may remember I shared this last week.
Look at this on eBay http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/172504612862
It's an SME3009 S2 on a Toshiba sr370
Alamo (andy) and I went to have a look after haggling him down to £340 over eBay.
When we got there the seller, Rob, tried to dash to the front door with it for a quick hand over. We weren't happy to pay without checking it over.
When we did the tonearm had lots of rotational play and moved front to back through the yoke freely. There is a video on YouTube under "SME clearance issue". I can't post a link for some reason. like this:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uDHecMk4d_w
I advised Andy that I felt there was an issue with the tonearm and felt we should leave it. The seller then decided to demand "fee reimbursement" even though there was no fee to pay.
I would avoid this guy, he was rather unpleasant.
He's also taken to his description of the item to bad mouth us both. Lovely

The mid units in the JBL's are not original, they are cheap twin cone drivers and the non original slotted tweeter 'lens diffusers' look like something from Jamo and they'll totally bugger up the sound from the LE20 tweeters. The asking price is nuts, but so is the seller maybe and quite likely some other nut may buy this lot.
I've see that ad before, or at least the accompanying text. Maybe a couple of years ago.

Indeed. A graphic equaliser should be set only one of two ways: 'Smiley Face' or 'Risky Business'.

he's obviously not very intelligent.
1. the listing now flags up the issue with the arm
2. The listing tells buyers to "make an offer" rather than just buy at the listed price, which says he feels it is overpriced
3. His banging on about you in such a peevish way red flags him as being very difficult to deal with and that the transaction may end in dispute.
All in all this listing screams "avoid"
I'd advise your friend to complain to eBay about having his user name mentioned in the listing. I would imagine they will not like that at all. If he wants to complain eBay has proper processes for that. Let us know how he gets on if he does.

Seconded all of that about the eBay TT. I noticed that as a similar item when the one without the arm was sold - and had half a thought oh that looks like a good deal. If you have time or inclination then put a complaint in. If I'd gone along I doubt I'd know what to look for and I'd have been ripped off

He was not a nice person at all. When. I raised the issue with the arm he scoffed at me as though I were stupid. He then proceeded to explain that he's a DJ and has technics 1210s. Like that were a qualification.
He didn't know the difference in bearings and has since stated the knife edge bearing to be fine. Yet the action demonstrated in the video suggests otherwise to me.
Definitely avoid. I think Alamo has decided to just ignore him.

Bit of a chancer this one .. selling as a Tannoy 'Gold' - I guess it's painted gold but that doesn't make it a Tannoy MG which is what he is clearly implying - I think it's an SRM?

EDIT - and another one - Tannoy Devon, goosed surrounds, goosed cabinets and a silly asking price

Though at least this is accurately described. A few years ago this would have been £250.

Notice the 'golds' are orientated so that the driver model number is not shown in the photos. Could have been taken from SRM cabinets, but I think more likely to be from Wildcats professional speakers. Same driver I believe. The crossovers look like HPD units, if so they will not give good results. The guy is definitely a chancer asking MG prices.
The Devons are worth half that asking price.

I can imagine Geoff, they certainly have a sound of their own, you either like it or you don't, they also suit particular music types, i like to look at it this way, the Queen can drink any wine she wants, price isn't a factor, but her favourite is Mateus rose, it's just what she likes

I would guess that one could probably add £1000 for crating and carriage from the US. Freighting from America is not cheap.
Also, these speakers will be US voltage, so another factor to be taken into account.

I've seen people pay more for worse stuff. I wouldn't pay more than $400, and that would be a stretch. I have plenty of storage space to keep it in until I found someone to buy it.

You can report it to ebay if there are doubts about the item being serviceable as described. I see the base cover is missing from the turntable (as is common on these).
See the 'report item' bit in blue on the right above the description.
You can also complain about being mentioned. You may have to phone ebay to do this though. Their phone helpline is pretty good.

Oh yes it is! I've had to pay some quite heavy import taxes on some Mark Levinson gear I've bought in the past. Not only the import tax but our mail service also charges to pay the customs tax for you and then there is service tax on top of that!

The Postal Service has never asked for their cut. I think it's messed up that I've never had to pay customs on anything from China, but anything from Europe seems to get valued at whatever they decide it's worth.
Russia is even worse. I brought in a crate of albums because I thought the Cyrillic writing on the jackets was cool. Customs was more than shipping and what I paid for the albums combined.

Well we will have to disagree about the looks Mike. I think it looks fine: elegant and understated, but not quite as gorgeous as the Lux PD131.

Looks ok to me. Quite tidy although maybe of it's time. Better looking arm wouldn't go amiss

I have one that works that only cost me $35. It could use a new veneer job, but other than that it's perfect. It's just ugly.

I hope someone outbids me on this. I just bid because the description was wrong. I should have looked at the shipping cost first. Their shipping is usually cheap, but this one's $55. I'd buy them for $20 all day long, It's not worth $65. I'll have a hysteresis motor to fool around with I guess.

If I'm remembering rightly was there not a thread rather critical of the vendor, bakabunghippo's, ahem, business model?
If so you might have had a lucky escape Al.

This is the latest stunt on eBay, item doesn't sell at £1000, relist it at £1250 it doesn't sell again, list it again at £999 and someone thinks they've gotten a bargain reduced from £1250.
See it happening a lot these days.

It could also be that he has sold them privately. If he cancels the auction ebay will charge him 10%, if he leaves the auction open someone might buy them and he'll be charged 10%, if he changes the price to £12k no one will buy them, auction will finish with no buyer and the seller doesn't have to pay a fee.

That sounds plausible.
I got stung for £50 when I ended an auction which had a £500 bid on it. After a long phone conversation eBay said they would give it back but they never did. I rarely use eBay to sell these days because of that - it's cost them many £hundreds in fees.
I reckon that's what he's up to, he has other items listed that would be priced in the millions otherwise.

Looks like two upper units, the other thing looks like a pot probably to control tweeter level.
Most folk who aren't into this gear think any speaker over a foot tall is a floor stander. I see them on there all the time.

Alchemist Kraken. I agree with the sellers description on looks ( i like the look), but full class A, don't think so,maybe first few watts ( Jez could answer this I'm sure). Excellent phono stage, 'err umm' well for me not that great. I would not describe the sound as the seller has, some say grainy, some warm. I like these amps, and use mine loads.
I like it that the seller has placed the power box to the side of the Amp, as most sellers place it on top, where it just looks odd.
Best with an 8ohm speaker, but can work with other rated speakers. Runs very hot, i added 'fin' legs to mine to raise it up a wee bit. Looks better ( to me), and more air flow around it.

Not sure , seen a few go from £130.00 - £300.00, as this has the 2 trans, may be more close to £300.00. I would assume £220.00- £250.00, but depends on how much someone wants it, like most stuff these days.

I'd expect about £275 for it. got double trannies I think. Worth that if in good nick. Pity I cant afford it lol. Was quite taken with Ali's one on Garys speakers. It would be overkill for my speakers anyway.

I have a box of old Mullards and Telefunkens and many others. When I sell any, I just bung them on ebay at a low starting price and see where the bidding goes. I just hate sellers with inflated ideas about how much they should get for their stuff. It's an increasing trend unfortunately.
I usually trade them for stuff. I don't like selling them. I won't even put those things in my own stuff. I'd get upset if one burned up.
I'll sell the ones that are more common, but I have tons of those. I'll give them another if one burns up.

You might struggle to get replacement drivers, but may be possible to salvage the existing ones. Worth a go for 99p, I doubt they will fetch more. JVC brand is very under-rated in general.

They're worth that just for the cabinets. That metal ring around the tweeter should make replacing the tweeters fairly easy for anyone with a router and a drill press. You could alter it for a lot of different ones. I bet the woofers sound really clean in a sealed box assuming the voice coils aren't cooked.
Do you know if the cabinets are real wood, veneer or vinyl?

You could alter it for a lot of different ones. I bet the woofers sound really clean in a sealed box assuming the voice coils aren't cooked.

I think they're veneer. All of the JVC ones I've seen from that period are. Probably particle board underneath.
It looks like veneered chipboard , judging by the corner off the back of the one ,but I see they have gone now :)
Is this a bargain ?? A linear tracking TT and some Wharfedale Mach 3's

I would say yes if you need the stuff. Those turntables can be pretty sketchy, and the CD player isn't the best. Neither one is really worth repairing if they die.

I disagree. Maybe the CD player isn't worth getting over-excited about but the turntable isn't half bad and it's a nice system for £150.

:
Seems to be a common affliction of Goodmans speakers of that era. I once bought a pair of Magisters with blown tweeters that sounded dull (obviously!) but promising.
I then sourced a pair of the correct tweeters in good condition, fitted them and....let's just say I sold them fairly quickly!

I think it's worth the price. Everyone of the Technics linear trackers I've had develops issues. There are always at least two online locally for around $30. It's cheaper to find another one than to repair the first. I won't sell them to anyone because of that. I've given a few away.
I don't know anything about the speakers, they are not available here. I'm sure I could find a pair somewhere, but they are not common.
I have no idea what this is worth, but it's cool. The price is worth a gamble.

Do you have a mono system ?
Do you have a mono system ?
I have everything I need to put one together aside from a cool speaker. Even a 30 watt monoblock with a turntable pre built in.
I just bought a pair of AR4s and Advent 2s on my lunch break for a ridiculous price. Might as well buy that too and overrun my place with speakers.

Goodmans Maxim speakers. A mere £780! That's about thirty times what I'd pay.

Dare say if you removed drivers and tossed them, they would be worth a grand;)
£780 more than I'd pay. Wouldn't take them free.
