Is that a pizzo tweeter added in? The other drivers look ok

With a hole on the wood in the back I imagine... and the crossover, what has he done to it?

struth
27-01-2016, 11:42
Probably just jumped it with a cap as as super tweeter

Xapito
27-01-2016, 11:45
That was if he knew what he was doing, a hole made for this purpose (a super tweeter?) and the electric tape on the terminals tell me otherwise... :)

struth
27-01-2016, 11:53
It doesnt appear to be screwed on.. Could it be stuck on or maybe just jammed in a hole.. He could just have sat it on top in a little box or made a little stand. That way it would be easily removable. Guess someone will buy them

walpurgis
27-01-2016, 12:11
The T27 tweeter needs no supertweeter anyway. It can be used as one, the top end goes up to a claimed 30kHz.

Haha, lol. Yup, the looks are certainly liable to divide opinion. That '1950s studio control room' aesthetic, however, is right up my street, and I suspect Jo's too, if he sees this ;)

Could not agree more and it claims to be a Garrard 301 Turntable SPECIAL EDITION, which of course it's not. Only Loricraft Audio can issue Garrard SPECIAL EDITIONS, as they own the licence to the name and trademark. Grail Audio are on a sticky wicket calling it such. In fact the owners of Garrard are Gradiente and as of the end of last year they appointed Loricraft as their representatives with respect to Garrard, which has extended their rights to the trademark even further. In my opinion, this is just a bit of blinged up tat :(

Grail Audio are on a sticky wicket calling it such.

Actually, I didn't know that it was one belonging to Audio Grail. I normally like what they do with Garrards (especially their BBC Hammerite Grey 301s, which for me are gorgeous), but not with that example, although that's largely because I'm from the rather 'sober' and functional school of T/T design, and have an acute aversion to bling!

Others might think it's fantastic....

Yes, but thefact is it's not a GARRARD Special Edition only Loricraft can do that as they have the rights to the name and are the only people who can sell genuine Garrard products. BTW, Loricraft matched the paint on the Hammerite 301s, with the help of the former chief engineer at the Garrard Swindon factory, over 20 years ago, they have been producing factory re-manifactured 301s and 401s for over 30 years. They have the original set up equipment from the Swindon factory at their works in Lambourn.

Thats why they call it an Audio Grail 301 special edition on box etc.... The fact that it was originally made by garrard and has a badge on is likely to be legal, just as If I had done one up, and plenty folk do. Hard to say, but they would have to be taken to court to find out I guess

Comparatively Barry, but it showed surface corrosion on the iron parts, which no doubt extended to the internals and the diamond tip didn't look right to me. So if I'd bought it I'd have needed to send it to John Wright for a refurb and then I'd have wanted a line contact tip on it. Hence the £500 I quoted. :)

Stereo 20 maybe £400, the deck maybe £150, Tuner £100 tops, not 'Shure' about the cartridge ho ho, and pre-amp essentially worthless. Add some on for the valves, still can't see how it can be more than a grand unless you really want the cabinet. And you could have one made for a lot less than the price difference. The guy is chancing his arm but given the interest in 'retro' among the bearded/sockless brigade there may actually be value in the fact it's all got up in a cabinet, most have been broken up long ago and this one isn't the worst out there by any means.

There's actually variability in how they work .. some (many) are self-equalising so you don't need a phono stage, but attenuation is needed as the signal is far too high for modern inputs.

Other need EQ but the impedance is wrong and you still have the gain issue, will overload most phono stages.

Interesting, and noted. It's the sort of info, however, which should be included in the seller's advert, in order to prevent folk, who don't know any better, buying it thinking that it's a 'normal' cartridge!

Didn't the BBC once use them for broadcasting (playing vinyl) in their radio stations?

Marco.

walpurgis
02-02-2016, 23:21
Yes. I believe the BBC did use them. Back in the late sixties and early seventies they had plenty of fans in radio studios and were also the mobile DJ's cartridge of choice, as they were tough reasonably cheap and sounded good. I was involved in the mobile DJ game back then and we used them exclusively. The Deram is possibly the best sounding mass produced ceramic cartridge, although I have come across Acos items that sounded decent too. The more common Sonotones did not compete in my view.

Beobloke
03-02-2016, 12:50
The Deram will actually work into an MM input and sound fine. However, when loaded like this it is incredibly microphonic and, of course, works best into a proper ceramic input.

I'm another big fan of the Deram and, must admit, I'm quite tempted by this one...

Marco
03-02-2016, 23:37

So, who's right?? And what exactly does "will actually work into an MM input and sound fine" mean? :hmm:

Will it actually work and sound any good, in the same way as if one were to use an ordinary MM cartridge? And how can it "sound fine" if it's liable to overload a phono stage??

WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN PHONO CARTRIDGES?

Most common cartridge of the 50's and 60's was the ceramic phono cartridge. Typically, these were supplied as turnover cartridges in early (non Hi-Fi) tube and solid state stereo systems, record changers and children's players. Some were higher quality versions such as the Decca Deram. Ceramic cartridges are high impedance and high output voltage (200-1200mV) devices. Another feature of this type of cartridge is that its response is amplitude based pick-up instead of velocity based like magnetic cartridges. This means that phono equalization is not required. A record player with this type of cartridge may be plugged directly into an high impedance (tube) input. Today, this type of cartridge is best used with old 78rpm records.

I can't claim to be an expert - my hifi experience dates from long after ceramic cartridges were mostly gone (ie, the 70s) but I did try out an old Decca once and the gain made it unusable. Most people playing with them seem to use vintage preamps made to accept them, or build their own 'phono stage'/input buffer. Which makes sense to me.

Marco

Thanks for that, Tom. No offence, but I trust you can see where I'm coming from? :)

It would really piss me off if I bought, say, the Decca Deram listed (were it still available), after being told that it will "work fine', and then finding out that it overloaded my phono stage and/or sounded shit for some other reason...!!

That's why, we try our best to ensure that whatever information is published on AoS is factual and accurate.

Now, could you (or anyone else) please explain what is meant by this:

Another feature of this type of cartridge is that its response is amplitude based pick-up instead of velocity based like magnetic cartridges.

Translate please into 'layman's language'.

This means that phono equalization is not required.

Why?

A record player with this type of cartridge may be plugged directly into an high impedance (tube) input.

What exactly is one of those? Is it a phono input, line input or what? Where would I find such, for example, on my Croft preamp?

My hi-fi experience really only dates from the early 80s, so ceramic cartridges, and their efficacy when used with modern equipment, is something I know zero about. However, I wish to ensure that any information posted here about the matter is both accurate and verifiable, for the benefit of all those who may be interested in learning about the subject.

Easy tiger...;)

Basically, ceramic cartridges are very sensitive to input loading. If you plug them into a normal MM input which loads them with 47kOhm they behave very differently to when they are plugged into a dedicated ceramic input, which would load them with 1-2MOhm.

With the lower resistive loading, many (but not all!) generally behave more like an MM as their bass rolls off and the RIAA equalisation restores this. Once the loading is up to the recommended Meg or two they have a flat response and thus require no equalisation (ceramic inputs have no RIAA equalisation). Their output will still obviously be higher than the average MM and whether this overloads the phono stage depends on the design of the stage.

It's an inexact science and does not work for all cartridges. However, I know you're a fan of using one's own ears and I can thus confirm through extensive personal experience that a Deram does work into an MM input and it did not overload mine. It sounded lovely but, as I mentioned, was very microphonic - as soon as I touched the armtube or fingerlift, there was a load of thumping through the loudspeakers! This disappeared when I used it through the dedicated Ceramic Cartridge preamplifier that I built years ago and it sounded even better. If you're really interested in the results I'm happy to dig my Deram out when I get five minutes and plug it into an MM input to remind myself of how it fares!

As an aside, if you fancy having a play with some ceramics, I can let you have the circuit of this preamplifier, which then plugs straight into a line input. Sadly, mine disappeared in a house move years ago and I've never got round to building another one.

Marco

Ok noted. The latter, however, isn't something I'd put up with, nor indeed the cartridge concerned being used anything other than optimally. That would be my only interpretation of 'sounds fine'! ;) It's either right or it's not. In that respect, there is no 'grey area'.

Please do, as I'd find that most interesting. I'd certainly be in the market for such a cartridge, as long as I was able to use it, as it was intended to be used, and hear it properly, which brings us to this:

As an aside, if you fancy having a play with some ceramics, I can let you have the circuit of this preamplifier, which then plugs straight into a line input. Sadly, mine disappeared in a house move years ago and I've never got round to building another one.

Please do (either send it via PM, or publish it on the new thread that you start in Strokes of Genius, when reviewing your Deram, and please also post some pics). I'd simply ask someone to build said 'preamplifier' for me

There was a very good article published in Wireless world in July 1971 about "Ceramic Pickup Equalization".

I'm currently using a Phillips (GP390) low output ceramic cartridge into a diy mm phono stage with additional passive eq to boost the 1.5db drop off below 500Hz.

If all goes well I'm planning to bring it to Scalford Hall mounted on a Thorens TD160 Super with RB300 arm.

Marco
12-02-2016, 20:37
Very nice... My Lockwoods originally came with a pair of Reds in, which I later swapped for Golds, as their overall presentation was more preferable in my system. Reds, being 15ohms, need matching with vintage valve amps, fitted with 15ohms taps, not the 8ohms ones most modern amps are fitted with.

Also, Reds, along with Silvers and Blacks are voiced rather differently from Golds, as they hark from before the popular music era (or at least Silvers and Blacks do, but Reds share their inherent traits), and as such, despite their size, don't really do deep bass. Instead their (considerable) talents lie in the midrange, where they are utterly, UTTERLY SUBLIME!

Fine if you're musical tastes are light classical, jazz, choral, acoustic or similar, but not so good if you're also into rock, dance, electronic, rap or anything else that carries what one could call an 'aggressive' bass line (count me in), so that's why I moved the Reds on. Golds have 95% of the magical midrange of the Reds, but also do the bass thing with aplomb! :)

However, I paid £3.5k for my Lockwood Majors *with* 15" Reds in, so if the drive units alone go for what Geoff predicts (and I would tend to agree), then that'll be quite something. Thing is, sonic prowess aside (and if your music tastes and system match the abilities of the Reds, once in suitable cabinets, nothing short of £50K today will be able to compete), one has to consider the (acute) rarity value here.

Anyway, whoever wins them will not only have a genuinely world-class pair of iconic speakers, but a big slice of audio history!

Indeed, but I've heard plenty of modern speakers (TAD or Magico anyone?) at that sort of price and beyond, sound completely sterile and bereft of music merit, in comparison - and simply wouldn't get NEAR to replicating what a pair of 15" Reds (in the right cabs) are capable of :trust:

No speakers are perfect, but it's the musically cohesive nature of their 'point source' effect, mixed with the horn loading, their use of light, 'fast sounding' paper cones, and ability to SHIFT SERIOUS AMOUNTS OF AIR, in a grin-inducing way, which as you say, makes them rather addictive :eyebrows:

Yes, did not notice that, also marked on the boxes in marker pen RE followed by a number. Recone possibly?

Many years ago I had some KEF B200's reconed by KEF, they wrote REC on a label stuck on the chassis.

Yes, did not notice that, also marked on the boxes in marker pen RE followed by a number. Recone possibly?

Many years ago I had some KEF B200's reconed by KEF, they wrote REC on a label stuck on the chassis.
Sharper eyes than me...yes, I'm sure thats it.

So some Reds, admittedly nice, in some boxes, not NIB, used and reconed. Not quite the impression the listing gives...

"Sharper eyes" perhaps not, maybe a larger computer monitor, because my eyes are the opposite of sharp!

Looks a bit like one crossover has a different shade of paint on compared with the other. But as mentioned, it looks like no paint off the speaker chassis where bolts would go. Perhaps these were complete rebuilds with chassis repainted.

I don't have massive experience with Classic Tannoys, but about 40 years ago I inherited a pair of 12" Silver corner Chatsworths form an uncle, who had bought them new. These were fabulous units, improved by fitting in larger cabinets. I bought a second pair of Silvers that were in perfect condition, but they were older production, seemed to have a lighter cone and slightly stiffer suspension. These never sounded as good as my uncle's ones. Bass extension was not as good, midrange was more coloured and treble not as extended. I then bought a pair of 12" Golds, they were not bad at all but did not match the magic of uncle's, probably late Silvers.

Later years, I bought a pair of re-foamed HPD315's (Alnico magnet ones), these remind me more of my uncle's Silver more than the others units. I still have the HPD 315's and the empty Corner Chatsworth cabinets. Any thoughts of how the HPD's would be in those old cabinets?

Why am I writing this, I suppose it's that I believe that there may be different versions of the 12" Silver with quite different sonic properties.

It's just collector nonsense. Golds are superior to any Reds - early or late - that I've heard, whether in modern or period cabinets. They also improved the crossover. It's an interesting phenomenon but it's got nothing to do with getting a better sound.

Also, the seller has had some questionable moments, I contacted him some years back about attempting to flog a pair of HPDs as as Gold, he basically told me to naff off and blocked me from his listings. Seems to be more established now so has perhaps learned to behave himself but I'd still be cautious.

Marco
22-02-2016, 00:20
Having owned 15" Reds and Golds, and used them in the same Lockwood cabinets, I know where you're coming from, Tom - and of course there's a reason why I swapped the original Reds for Golds....

The Reds are more one-trick ponies, *but* what they do well (midrange lucidity) is stunning, and significantly better in that area than Golds, which in turn are significantly better in the bass. It's pretty much horses for courses, including the amps you use with them, in order to get them to sing, and most importantly the music you're into.

Ultimately, for me, as I'm into such a wide and varied amount of music, Golds were the more versatile :)
