Nice condition. Love those;)

It's not a Michell Grant it's a Germam Transrotor, they used Michell parts. That model is special to me as it's basically a 'Focus One' with 'Hydraulic' platter

Had made him a fair offer as when he bought it he made an offer below the 350 asked then. he has now pulled it showing he only wanted to make profit on it. will put him down as a dodgy seller now.

I've got one. It works!

Does a similar job to the MA DIP. I have used both together with interesting results (even more interesting if you bung an X-10D into the mix :) ).

The MC25FL is more or less on a par quality wise with the ZYX R50 Bloom in my book, although they sound very different. I had both until recently (blowed if I know where my MC25FL has got to ) and compared them several times.

To me, the ZYX maybe sounds a bit bigger and even more expansive, but the Ortofon is better detailed at the top and has more 'sparkle' (just).

They're both lovely cartridges.

gonna use that anti jitter with my lappy out to the Monarchy. It will allow me to use the Beresford async spdif line and convert to tos all in the box and possibly improve everything at same time....well, that's the theory.;)

Ho Ho. You'll have fun with that! Especially if you try what I did. Now all you need is an X-10D. All good entertainment and the results are not what you'd expect. You'd think with that many links in the chain, something would suffer. Not the case. It works a treat!

I've had a couple and that's how I found them. The NAD 3020 and Audiolab 8000 offered a similar type of sound too in my view. They have the type of inoffensive character that makes them easy to slot into a system without getting 'nasties', but they're not for me.

Notice how the start price is exactly the same as that other Marantz 2 monoblock sale AND the demands from the seller are exactly the same and worded the same "No PayPal!" ... and yet is a completely different account.

Defo someone using hyjacked accounts.

Lots of dubious stuff on eBay. Like the boxed McIntosh valve amps that keep cropping up and the amazing amount of new condition vintage Tannoy black and Silver dual concentric drivers and crossovers from far east sellers, which look very good, but I'm sure are clever repros.

Probably not much in it either way soundwise. The Thorens is better made. I've seen a few tired bearings and peeling veneer on the later ARs. Both will out perform a Rega Planar 3 for instance in my opinion.

The link I had to the Marantz 2 listing no-longer goes anywhere... so hopefully Ebay has notified the winning bidder and taken away their option to make payment.

I've had that before, with a message saying that an item I'd bid on was suspicious and that I didn't need to complete the transaction. In that case I'd guessed it was dodgy but was taking the chance by instisting I collected in person - I never heard back.

I've seen one of those tuners before and they're very pretty in an 80s way. Best of all though, with the remote unit, find a Kenwood/Trio KD4100 turntable and you get yourself a remote controlled record deck!

Here's a photo of the system from a catalogue courtesy of www.fmtunerinfo.com (sounds like the tuner isn't very good by their standards though):

£170 is pretty good. The smaller System 600 go for over £200 generally and the 637 should have a better bottom end. Don't let me lead you astray Grant, but I reckon you'd be delighted with them. By the way, they will definitely run circles around the IMFs and not wishing to be rude, they'll likely outclass the KEFs too. I've had several pairs of Tannoys using these drivers (i6/DC6i/Sytem 600) and they sound lovely. (OK the DC6i has paper cones, but sounds just about the same)

The IMF's have Kef drivers in now... 200's I think so wont sound standard. I will consider it; funnily I think I might know the guy, and thats kinda putting me off a little.

I have approx 13 Sony minidiscs. Some friendly chap did the recordings for me a couple years ago....They sound pretty decent!

Can you recommend me a simple, but yet high quality, good sounding mini disc player just for playing? I don't bother with recording!

I stick with the Sony ones. They are all good, but much will depend on if any compression was used in the recording altrac 3 is usually the best to get. You can use the portable walkmans and plug the headphones into your stereo ...sound pretty good. I have 2 or three walkmans and either one or 2 big units...cant remember . If I have 2 you can have one. or if you want a walkman just say.

No. They are as Grant describes and for small PA systems. I tried a pair ('cos they were cheap) and they're horribly coloured due to poor damping and they lack anything ressembling bass due to the small box and high resonance light paper cone with stiff surround.

No, I sourced them locally Bev. The AMS8 is quite old now and predates the System 8 DMT and the rather nice System 800. If I'm not mistaken the driver in the AMS8 is a commercial version of the DC8 unit, a speaker that I didn't like. I found it rather flat, dull, two dimensional and a bit coloured.

I can't tell you Bev, not having compared them. My mate has the DMT10 which sound very fine indeed and I've had the System 800 (and 600 and 1000), which are excellent. (The 600 is nice but on a smaller scale. The 1000 is very dynamic, but coloured)

I've contact the seller via Gumtree for the System 8's... If he comes back with a decent offer I may well try them out.... ;) Do you know if they use the same driver as the System 800's or similar ?? Thanks for your help Geoff...

thanks for pointing this out (reference SMSL DAC posted earlier - thought I was replying to a particular post), picked it up to use with blu ray player to hopefully let me lose a separate cd player to save some space.

You see. This thread does have it's uses! ;)

Sean is happy now.

How much did you get it for Sean? If that's not a secret.

20 quid....nice buy!

yes just under £24 with postage which I think is a great price. Thing is after looking at the DAC I ended up trawling ebay last night after a few glasses of wine which is always dangerous. Ended up buying a small 70's pioneer amp I don't really need (I only just picked up a similar one middle of last week) and for which there wasn't even a photo! actually I completed the deal this morning after exchange of offers so I can't really blame the drink but I probably wouldn't have got interested in the first place without the wine.

Which model?

An SA5300, posting looked a bit iffy but after an exchange of messages seemed genuine so took the risk, £25 including postage. Picked up a SA7300 last week which I really like. The SA5300 isn't very powerful but should be fine for me.

Hmm, they are the built in Japan 'only thing B&O about them are the badges and bits of the turntable' Beocenter 2200s.

I'd give them a miss personally. If you want a properly magnificent Beocenter you'll need to spend a bit more:

A pair of Tannoy T125 speakers, offered at £275! That's five times what they're worth in my opinion. I sold the last pair I had for £20.

Hi Bev.

My friend has some 8's in her studio. As Paul said though, parts (for the drivers I take it) are no longer available, make sure they are working well before you shell out the green.

Of course, the crossovers could be fixed/refreshed.

They are very nice indeed, hope you can get them. :)

Ha , The HMV TT I bought recently came with a 75-6 S stylus , exactly like that !! with a twisted shank ?? is that the right name for the tiny squarish tube? ( I had a 91ED stylus to hand luckily )

Since then the sellers wife came across another in a box ,whilst cleaning , and the seller wants to send it to me for free .(Very nice of him)

Perhaps its another like this one :D

I'd assume that "shank" or maybe 'spigot' might be correct. After all the piece you refer to slots into a recess.

Lucky man having an M91ED stylus handy. It's possibly my favourite Shure actually. It just does everything right within its capabilities. Good cartridge. I like the M93ED too.

It's said that the 91ED is basically the same as the 75ED, but I'd swear the 91EDs I've had sounded better.

I just found an old M75 6 myself that I'd forgotten about and bought a Goldring made M75E stylus for it. Not tried it yet, but I'd imagine the Goldring stylus should be good.
