I quite often did mine on the bus to school... It was a good 35-minute journey, so there was usually enough time to 'cobble together' some bollox!:eyebrows:

Marco.

I got into serious trouble over some maths homework done in a lastminute.com style. The teacher called me over, and laid into me about how untidy my work was. 'Apart from anything else, it looks like you used a cigarette packet to rule these lines' he said, to which I replied 'I did, sir'. I truly wasn't intending to be cheeky, but he thought I was, so I got a belting.

I shared a bedroom with my bro. it was a decent size but damn cold as we didnt have the upstairs fires on. solid ice on insides of windows etc... we all scuttled down to the livingroom fire to get dressed..lol.
I had a big old valve radio and a mono grundig reel to reel as my companions.

Homework? whats that?

Marco

I didn't even have my own bedroom, let alone a 'music system'. First I shared a bedroom with my two older sisters, and was then moved into the box-room with my little brother. There was just about enough room for bunk beds, and for us to get into the beds (having checked a house for sale in the road, the room was 9'7 x 5'10). When I was about 14, my father got a car, and we had a garage built with a bedroom over the top, and we moved in there. It was roomier than the box-room, but colder and smelled of petrol. There was a family Dansette record player in the sitting room, and a large radio in a walnut case in the dining room, and those were the only sources of music in the house.

Cool - bet you still all had fun, though!:)

As an only child, I was fortunate to have my own bedroom, which always had cool stuff in it to keep me amused. Had a portable TV in there too, around the same time as I got my first computer, which meant I could sneakily watch programmes in bed (such as The Sweeney), when I should've been asleep:eyebrows:

My brother and I got on fine, but my sisters were always arguing about something. There were also some spectacular rows between one of my sisters and my mother, usually about my sister staying out too late with 'unsuitable' boyfriends. Doors would be slammed, voices raised, usually ending with my mother shouting the immortal lines 'Just wait till your father gets home'. Then when he did get home, which was late, because he worked shifts, the rows would start again.

Lol... Weren't electric heaters invented then? I seem to always remember having one of those 'Dimplex' heaters in my room, which I'd switch on when it got cold. Can't ever remember being freezing at home, as in the lounge we had a nice coal fire, which heated the whole of the downstairs.

We also had Everest double-glazing installed throughout, I think sometime in the mid-70s, so the house was never really that cold. Mum and dad also had one of those big 'wooden cabinet radiograms', which included a turntable, and sounded pretty good, but that was for listening to their Mario Lanza and Frank Sinatra records on, which at the time I hated!:D

we got double glazing and central heating in 70's too. did help a lot. it was a big, old house and it did catch a lot of weather being high up on the hill. Didnt have any electric heaters as they cost too much tbh. No complaints tho as it was a great house to grow up in in 60's etc. most folk had a lot less.

Marco
14-10-2018, 14:41
Yeah, I was only allowed to put the heater on for a while, when it was cold, just to take the chill off the room, then had to switch it off or I got a bollocking. Like you say though, the best thing was getting central heating:)

You posted a pic of your old house once, and it was very nice. We lived up high too, at the top of a hill and at the end of a cul-de-sac. I just Googled and found a recent picture of our old house, where I grew up. Nothing fancy, just a semi-detached, but it was in a nice quiet area on the south side of Glasgow:

https://imagizer.imageshack.com/v2/xq90/923/slLwv1.jpg

Ours was the one on the far R/H side of the picture, with the white door and where you can just see the outline of a car port. If you look in the distance, you'll see some large tower blocks, which will give you an idea of how high up we were. My bedroom overlooked the hills at the back. Had a great view:)

We used to get snowed in all the time, as with a car, there was only one way in and out, and when it was really bad, the steep hill that led down to the main road was unusable. You couldn't get up or down it without skidding all over the place. Great for sledging down, though!:D

Yeah it was a nice area, populated in the main by reasonably affluent middle-class families, so it was safe to play outside and cycle around on your bike, without fear of encountering any 'neds':eyebrows: One of my best mates used to live across the road, and the other one was just along at the bottom of the street.

We were also lucky to live beside one of the nicest parks in Glasgow, if not Scotland, which featured a beautiful waterfall, among other things: https://www.google.com/search?client=firefox-b&biw=1296&bih=720&tbm=isch&sa=1&ei=eVrDW8-jC4_zsAGp6oCABQ&q=rouken+glen+park&oq=rouken+glen+park&gs_l=img.3..0l2j0i67k1j0j0i8i30k1l2j0i24k1l4.3915. 4909.0.5923.5.5.0.0.0.0.96.380.5.5.0....0...1c.1.6 4.img..0.5.377....0.VQ0zRpnJeuE#imgrc=C-pdbF1ixk_MqM:

Nice, mate... Shame about the garden now, though!!

You get some right lazy fuckers, with an aversion to using a trowel, lawnmower, or getting their hands dirty:rolleyes:

We had a lovely garden too, as both of my parents (particularly my dad) loved flowers and also growing their own produce, especially herbs, such as thyme and rosemary, which are both essential in Italian cooking. We grew tomatoes in our greenhouse too, for the pasta sauce!:)

Nice... I've only been once to Aberdeen. Outside of holidays, I spent most of my time in the south side of Glasgow, or at secondary school in Paisley. I went to primary school in Queens Park, in Glasgow, and lived in the house I showed you from 1965 to 1989, just before I met Del, after which we got our own place, before moving down to Wales in 2000.

Yeah, Rouken Glen was (still is) just lovely... Pretty big in size and very 'leafy' and unspoiled, with beautiful trees and woodland walks, which went on for miles, and a wonderful selection of wildlife. Plus, there was also a boat pond and golf course, and you could go on horse and cart rides round the park, nice cycling paths and all sorts. Great place for a kid to play in the summer months:)

Nice one. I got up to all sorts of shit too, and was always pretty big (tall and muscular) for my age, so when it got to about 4th year, I didn't take any shit either. We used to laugh when one of the weedy wee teachers we had gave us the belt, as it didn't hurt much, which made him go ballistic...

The more he tried to belt us harder (at some point even jumping up in the air, to get more force behind it, and yes, it was comical to watch) and using the thick tip of the belt over our knuckles, the more we just laughed, to the point of him becoming so angry he almost had a seizure:D:D

Went outside to wash the van this morning, and the next door neighbour said good morning to me. Nothing unusual in that you might think, but that's the first time that's happened, and we've been here more than 15 years.

Thing is, he's had a gardener do some extreme surgery on the shrubs and bushes bordering my drive, including cutting down a half dead tree. There is now a big gap, so my van and his car can see each other. If these greetings are going to be a regular thing I may have to think about moving.

Mrs. P was talking to him yesterday, and she says he seems very nice. And he wants me to build some fences for him, the same as ones I did for next door on the other side. Hopefully he'll want 6 foot jobbies. :)

Like Mickey Flanagan, I may have to peep out of the window before going outside.

Debenhams may be interested. A bit of diversification in their fragrances dept. may be just the thing to keep them open. You'll need to come up with a good product name though, like 'Amnesia' or 'Phut n'adore'. Avoid names that give away its origin, like 'Eau de Wrexham Rectum' - just not classy enough.

I doubt anyone was convinced there was nobody home - each time there was a knock on the door, the cat jumped on the window cill to peep through the blinds. Callers couldn't fail to notice the movement. But checking outside this morning, windows are egg-free, and no other signs of mischief.

Both Aiwas are lucky finds , I decided I liked the first one enough to buy this as a spare or vice versa. Direct drive , not quartz lock , less to go wrong ,but still steady enough on speed , semi auto, and I love the look of them !!! Just need to clear the others out to make some room

Being a non smoker, I was not bothered, but smokers found this very difficult.

Pigmy Pony

As smokers are very much in the minority these days they're always going to be shit on by committees. If I was on a committee I would propose the banning of alcohol during lunch breaks and people with comb-overs, but then I would be outnumbered there too.

It won't end with smokers - next up will be employees who drive to work. Everyone will be forced to cycle, walk or take public transport.

The worst ones are:

For somebody who has smoked for many years, even the transition to vaping can be tricky. For some, abruptly doing without nicotine can induce feelings of illness. It does with me. Fortunately, after many, many attempts at trying to give up smoking, I've managed to adapt to vaping, but if it wasn't for this, I would have to revert to cigarettes.

For an employer to force nicotine addicted workers to endure a whole day without a 'fix' is not doing anybody favours. It's not about setting standards or benefitting anybody, it's just to make life difficult. Smokers should be encouraged to vape, it does far less harm to them and is pretty innocuous to others. People should be helped, not bullied!

I assume the council employees get paid for their lunch break?

If not then they can smoke then, it's their own time.

I've worked plenty of places were you couldn't just nip out for a smoke anytime you felt like it. One place I worked where they treated staff like adults and allowed smoke breaks at your own discretion I used to just have one roughly mid morning and one around mid afternoon. Which I thought was reasonable. But when I'd go out I'd find there were more employees in the smoking hut than in the office. Sometimes it was so full you'd have to smoke outside. And it was a pretty big multi-room portacabin.

So eventually they stopped it. Some people will always take the piss and ruin it for everyone.

Yeah I think it's the same with a lot of things - the employers should come down on the offenders, or a least have a word, but it's easier and less likely to result in claims of discrimination, persecution etc. if they just close the door on everyone.

I was told of a pizza manufacturers near me that used to allow the employees to take home "seconds", which would be a nice little perk, until these pizzas started showing up in certain corner shops. So no more free pizzas for anyone. :(

For the protestors to care enough to protest is laudable, and I appreciate that such protests in their home country may lead to them being arrested, beaten or even shot, but do such protests in another country really achieve anything?

Perhaps the protestors don't have anything more productive to do, but the police certainly do, in the face of all the violent crime going on.

Sorry if this sounds a bit crass, but if I felt such demonstrations would achieve anything I would be more supportive. My thoughts on this aren't set in stone, and I'd be happy for anyone to tell me why I'm mistaken.

More so these days as people have mobile phones and can video these events, which subsequently appear on social media. Every little bit of bad publicity helps, though the eventual outcome is not certain

Perhaps the protestors don't have anything more productive to do, but the police certainly do, in the face of all the violent crime going on. True - but the protection of Embassy staff probably has a very high priority

There have been similar protests recently in America and France. Even a seemingly immovable and equally corrupt president was removed from office not so long ago. Of course it might be plus ca change, plus ca la meme chose, but what the protesters want is a change.

She does love her Felix pouches though, eaten in a strict order of business. First step is to lick all the gravy or jelly off and then have a nap. Second, eat half the meat and then have a nap. I don't know - no doubt there is some international convention on the level of protection of foreign embassy staff required to be provided by the host country. There were about a dozen police officers - none of whom seemed to be armed.

Think they might have also been there to prevent harassment of members of the public entering and leaving the embassy.

I had some done a few years ago. Expensive, but as you say utterly painless.

Think I had three sessions of up to an hour and a half in the chair. I was surprised to learn my dentist drilled down 2.5cm into the jaw in places, the depth being monitored by a conductivity measurement.

I’m going in for a total knee joint replacement surgery on Tuesday morning. They are just doing the left knee, I’ll have to come back for the right knee next year.

But, it seems they have streamlined this procedure a great deal. Instead of installing a huge ball joint in place of the knee, now they only place a plate over the ends of the bone, at the point of contact. Like getting new brake pads. No muscles or ligaments are cut, I’ll be up walking as soon as anesthesia wears off. I had to attend a class on the procedure, and one woman asked how soon she could return to work, and they told her one month! So I’m going into this with great expectations. Wish me luck!

Too bad about the red track suit, I’m more of a denim kind of guy anyway.

It’s on now! The hospital just called and told me to arrive at 9 in the morning. I said, “You mean there’s more than one 9 o’clock?”. I am not a morning person! But, I can catch up on my sleep on the operating table.

The reason I have pursued this operation is this recent crack down on pain medications. I could have gone the rest of my life just fine, but they’ve cut my pain meds back to the point that it forces drastic measures, like this operation. Early next year I’ll have about 8 hernias sewn up, and later in the year my right knee. If I could buy a new spine I’d be a new man! So, In a year’s time I hope to be free of pain medication all together. Or that’s the plan anyway.

What is the idea in stopping folks meds?

What is the idea in stopping folks meds?

Here in the US there is suddenly an Opioid Epidemic, and for some reason they seem to think that old people selling their prescriptions illegally is the root cause of this crisis. Forget the fact that the factory makes twice as many pills as they sell, they’re not saying where those other half go, but old folks with chronic pain are somehow at fault for all of the junkies overdosing on prescription pain pills.

So, the CDC, (center for disease control) issued a new recommendation for how opioids should be prescribed. Only recommended levels, and was stated as only for new patients, it actually said not to take meds away from those who have been at high levels for years. But, the DEA has taken this recommendation to heart, and any doctor who does not strictly follow the recommendations will be hassled and get their license to prescribe taken away. Now, I haven’t actually heard of anyone loosing their license who weren’t breaking the law, but the fear has caused every doctor to comply. It’s been a year and a half and everyone has been cut back to bare nothing on meds, but the numbers on the news of overdoses has actually risen! But do you hear them confessing they made a mistake? No, they keep on the same rhetoric, making up huge numbers by including heroin overdoses and suicides, just sensationalizing the whole ordeal.

Personally, I believe they have ulterior motives, I’m not sure what they are, but what they’ve done had nothing to do with the problem, and has had less than zero impact on the problem, so why did they do it?

And chronic pain sufferers have been thrown under the bus. I’ve had chronic pain, and I know, if they had enforced this before I had my ostomy, it would have killed me dead. How many people have they killed? How many have they ruined their quality of life? We don’t hear those numbers.

Sorry for the rant! But you asked..

Whenever there is big money involved, you can bet the best interests of the people are the last things on their minds. I’m guessing that the government wants to get their hands on some of the money that the pharmaceuticals are making? To demonize them like they have the tobacco industry, and make billions in righting this wrong. People are just as free to smoke as they ever were, but the government is making billions in taxes that they weren’t making before, and they pretend to be addressing the problem.

And the thought they are actually trying to kill off as many sick people who draw disability and Medicare money as they can, to help lower what they pay out? Not to mention insurance companies who want to stop paying for pain management for the insured. As I said, the number of those killed by these new rules is none existent, as if they don’t want anyone to know. Would the government kill people to save money? Yes! They already do, when I was declared disabled, which took far too long and too much red tape, there is a two year waiting period to get Medicare. So, they already know you’re sick! You’ve just been declared disabled! So why the two year wait? Because a percentage of these people will die in the first two years, and they won’t have to cover these expensive end of life treatments. If anyone knows of another reason, I’d love to hear it.

Causing the sick to suffer in order to save junkies is hard to justify, but they twist it around, and now its public opinion that pain meds are bad! And those who take them are bad. A sad state of affairs.

In my experience, failures are most likely to occur when equipment is constantly switched on and off, and especially when left idle for long periods of time, and then abruptly powered up from (very) cold, as the power surge and 'shock' to the circuit can often blow components.

My CDP and DAC have been left switched on for about 10 years, so I shudder to think how many 'spent capacitor hours' that would equate to? Both still sound great, are used daily, and haven't given me a moment's bother!:)

Leaving low-power consumption solid-state equipment permanently powered up, thus allowed to continually operate in a 'steady state' is the best way to protect your gear and allow it always to perform, sonically, to its maximum potential.

:trust:

Marco.

Not going to leave a Krell powered up all the time, I'd go bankrupt. Plus don't fancy a catastrophic failure happening when I'm not around.

I cannot perceive any difference in SQ from it from just after switch on to 3 or 4 hours in. Likewise with my various CD players.

Marco
15-11-2018, 09:57
The first point is very valid and should of course be considered if you're running a Class A amp! Valve equipment, of any description, similarly should NEVER be left switched on when unattended.

As for "catastrophic failures", in solid-state equipment they're liable to be fairly benign and contained within the equipment itself, without causing damage to anything externally, providing that there is sufficient safety protection in place, both within the design of the equipment itself and the mains supply it's connected to.

That being the case, there is really nothing to worry about:)

The reality is, failures of any description, in my experience, are more likely to occur when equipment is switched on from cold, and/or repeatedly on and off. That's also when a fuse is most likely to blow. If you think about it, how often do fuses blow whilst equipment is switched on?

Rarely, in my experience. It usually happens when they're first powered up. So that should illustrate when problems are most likely to arise!;)

That's my main point. Whether equipment, to your ears, sounds better left switched on or not is entirely subjective.

Marco.

The BBC have (or had) a policy of leaving equipment switched on most of the time.

Valve gear does take some warming up, and class A amplifiers just use too much power to be left on all the time (as well as running hot), but all my preamps, phonostages and CD player are powered up all the time. Apart from two moves of property and a few power cuts, my speakers have been powered up for the last forty-five years.

My annoyance with leaving the Quad 510 amps on, was more due to the fact I didn't check before I left home. Often I will forget and leave them left on overnight, but to do that for a week or more was salutory. Creeping senility!

I had a friend who left his Audiolab amp on 24/7 and it failed catastrophically, although it didn't burn the house down or anything it was irreparable by the time he got back. That cost me an amp too as I lent him a Marantz as a stop-gap (a good one too with level meters) which he still has 26 years later.

Some flakey Croft amps aside, I've had an amplifier fuse blow only once and it was in use (cranking up a Cambridge P70 into some Celestion A2) not on switch on.

I used to leave my CD player on 24/7 and a ribbon connector burned out.

I used to leave my Linn LK100 on all the time and now it sounds quite noisy (hiss through speakers with nothing connected) which I'm sure it didn't use to.

So my own experiences of 24/7 power up are not good and since I personally can't hear any difference between 'cold' and 'warmed up' I don't do it anymore.

Sounds like a serious design fault then (substandard protection circuitry inside the equipment in question), or some bizarre set of circumstances occurring, as normally that shouldn't happen!:nono:

"Catastrophic failure", however, normally involves the existence of a fire or something blowing up rather spectacularly!

I personally would not leave any of my equipment powered permanently,

Really? That's surprising. It's happened to me loads of times over the years, most recently with my Sony blu-ray player, which I'd foolishly switched off, until one day recently I accidentally bumped the 'On' switch, when I was cleaning, and it blew the main board (only discovered after it would no longer respond to the remote control and went in for repair). Fortunately, the player was still under warranty!

I guess it comes down to what your own experience dictates. However, I'm convinced that there is good reason not to continually switch electrical equipment on and off, and by that I mean simply on the level of every day, after you've finished listening to it, and then back on again the next day to use it. Whether you'll actually experience the negative effect of that or not, in my view, is simply down to luck.

Had a really vivid dream last night.

It was an episode of Minder. I was Terry McCann and Arthur Daley had accidentally flooded my flat so he put me up at an hotel. But the hotel turned out to be a flophouse with all sorts of odd characters knocking about. The main plot was there was this glamorous bird who Chisholm had in the frame for something but who was innocent. So we had to keep her out his way until the real culprit was caught. The sub plot was that Arthur had a load of dodgy whisky and cigars that he was trying to unload.

Woke up, thought what a weird dream. Went to the bog, went back to bed and fell asleep and it carried on! In the end we were smuggling this bird out through a revolving door whilst Chisolm was going through it the other way. So strange. And before you ask, no, I've not seen an episode of Minder in well over a year.

I don't think there is any explanation for cat behaviour. Mia slept in a lovely cosy bed for ages then completely ignored it. Like Alice she tries all sorts of places for a while and then settles for a particular spot, currently the back of the sofa in the evening and then the foot stool for the night. Previous resting spots include my bed, the floor, my turntable, my speakers, the window sill and the top of the fridge.

Nationally the water will be chlorinated to a certain percentage, regardless of your postcode. Macca may simply be more sensitive to differences than Marco when it comes to drinking water. They still add chlorine to it though. I know people think you can't get better water than drinking from a mountain spring but it's a good way to get parasites. You have to boil it first or use a sanitab.

Sure, but there's no discernible chlorine taste, unlike with many other types of tap water I've tried. Therefore, essentially it tastes the same as mineral water, thus there is no real advantage in buying the latter:)

Marco's water may well be coming from somewhere nice, but is still likely to pick up the odd dead sheep or shepherd turd along the way.

Yes but when you're as friendly with 'Bessie' (and her pals), as I am, your palate is so honed on sheep-juice, you don't really notice the extra flavour the above imparts. It's like having orange juice with added 'bits', although in this case the 'bits' in question don't come from oranges.

Is that what they're calling it, the Mars Lander? Nowt wrong with a bit of optimism I suppose. Personally I would go with "Mars Approacher" until it happens. :) It's a shame I won't live long enough to see us inhabit the place. I would like to open its first pub. I would call it "The Mars Bar".

Seriously Paul, that looks like a nice idea - would no doubt help with funding the mission, and get people more involved in it. Was it expensive? On a slightly related note, C4 is airing an eight-part series called "The First", about a mission to Mars. If you've not seen it, it's definitely worth a watch. One of the few things on telly that me and Mrs. P are both enjoying. :)

There's a new hairdessers opened near us. Part of it is called 'The Colour Bar', which for people of my generation sounds vaguely racist, though it's presumably just somewhere you get your hair dyed.

If someone called Joe has had their name implanted, yes. Unless the chip is discovered and decoded by angry Martians who will then seek out and exterminate all those named, in which case, no.

Business at the Pub on Mars might be a little slow these days? Perhaps a nice pub in orbit makes more sense? Within space-walking distance of the international Space Station. There are always 4 or 5 patrons hanging out near by.

It cost nothing you just to register on the NASA website, Good for the kids to get intertested and it really was quite impresive the scince and tech involved.
Thanks for the heads up on the C4 prog.

I better be careful then as there are only two people on this planet with my surname, the other being my son, perhaps we should consider changing it to Smith.

Ooh, Stellar Burger, the thought's making me hungry. You know, life on Mars would be great for a greedy pig like me - gravity there is such that objects there are only a third of the weight they are here, so I could eat three times as much without putting on weight. Happy days!

Probably said by Oscar Wilde, but then he was not averse to appropriating pithy aphorisms.
