Now that's what I call going off the beaten track, and meeting ordinary locals. Even when the ordinary local goes off the beaten track with a giant machete.

There have been cases of tourists exploring "off the beaten track", accidentally finding themselves in a badass area and coming to grief. And if you're in a hire car you might as well have big sign on it saying "we're tourists and we're lost". I personally would feel safer travelling in the company of someone with a bit of local knowledge.

Got lost in LA once - in a hire car - ended up in South Central. At least I can say I've been there.

Good point, and so true. That's why it pays to do some research first (isn't the Internet a wonderful thing?) before simply just wandering into such places;)

Not much internet back in 2000. I had the map the hire car company gives you, which doesn't show all the roads but even so it is mostly a grid pattern and I had a compass. I blame jet lag.

So, going back to my original point, is anyone else sad that the A380s days are numbered?!

I can quite understand the economical and practical reasons for its upcoming demise but, as an engineer, I’m sad that it’s magnificent technological advances are going to quietly slip by the wayside.

Didn't they cite fuel efficiency as a reason for its demise. Obviously smaller planes will be better in that respect, but as there would have to be more of these smaller planes to shift a given number of passengers, just how significant will the improvements be? Like replacing a forty seat bus with ten mini hatchbacks.

Concorde was cool. I remember my mate telling his soon-to-be-ex girlfriend that she looked like Concorde. She didn't like that, but he said "It's alright, I really like Concorde". There was really no coming back from that one.

I disliked the 747 and I really dislike the A380: hate it that the loos at the front are situated so that when you come out of them you are faced with two tiers of passengers looking at you. (Always check you are fully zipped up before you leave!)

We suffered a major power cut a couple of days ago (16 Feb). The whole village was blacked out. Apparently a major cable had been severed, and I was informed it would take at least one and a half to two hours to repair!

So there we were surrounded by candles (the power cut should have occured two days before as that would have been more 'romantic' . :D), unable to do anything much (yes, I did suggest the obvious, but my partner was not in the mood!).

It made me think how much we depend on a reliable and uninterupted power supply: to listen to our audio systems; watch TV; use the PC; heat the house (ie. run the pump); use a washing machine/dryer; iron clothes; use a vacuum cleaner etc. etc.

So we sat there listening to Bob Marley on my partners smartphone - 'Three Little Birds':

"Don't worry, be happy
Coz everything's going to be all right
....".

I then checked for an update, and lo and behold as I did so the power was restored. It only took them an hour, so well done to whoever it is who maintains the UK National Mains Distribution Network. Despite complaints, we really are blessed with a reliable, stable and good quality mains supply.

We had a power cut a few weeks ago, which lasted from 6pm until about four the next morning. Luckily we have loads of candles about the house, though Anita was gnashing a bit as they are really just for show. She had bought me a Kindle Paperwhite for Christmas, so I was sorted. With no telly on and no music, we found we actually had lots to talk about! Easy to think that TV's etc might fill the silences in people's lives, but I reckon they often cause silences!

The quietness of the house was quite eerie, but not at all unpleasant - normally there are background noises, from fridge, dishwasher, central heating etc, none of that, just me, Anita and my tinnitus!

Did miss the kettle though :(

You've also got Major Allison 'Digby' Tatham-Warter https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Digby_Tatham-Warter who put a German armoured car out of action with his umbrella, amongst many other things. The fictional character of Major Carlyle in 'A Bridge Too Far' is partly based on him.

Thanks for the link, most entertaining.

My Great Uncle served on the S-Class submarine HMS Safari during WW2. So far as I know, Safari is the only submarine ever to have destroyed a tank with a torpedo. The torpedo was supposed to strike a German cargo ship as it unloaded supplies for the Afrika Korps, but, well wide of its target, continued out of the sea and up the beach before disposing of the enemy tank.

I've still got classic Minis, three of them. The oldest is a January 1962, had the car since 1968. It's got a 1275 cc engine in it. It would need a bit of work to get it roadworthy. Benefits, low classic car insurance, no road tax, MOT exempt, exempt from low emission charges (if car is registered).

Went to an engagement do last night, the disco was exceedingly LOUD.

The quality was fantastic, really clear and great extension top and bottom. Looked like some smallish pro monitors on stands, didn't go up close to look at then because it was TOO LOUD.
I hate it when you can't even have a conversation without shouting, even then I have always struggled to hear spoken (shouted) voice over the LOUD music.

I did voice my concerns to both of the couple and his mother, there were lots of young children there, I bet everyone has ringing ears this morning.
I couldn't stick it for more than 3/4 of an hour, my ears were beginning to ring after that time.

Did I say it was TOO LOUD :mental:

You can see from his coat he's in good condition. Must have had a better offer yesterday.

Possibly, but he's so wary of people, I don't think anyone could get near.

I must have been feeding him for about two years, most days I'm greeted with a hiss, today, two feint meows, I'm honoured.

Them's the ones, and when she has action at both the front door and the tradesmen's entrance simultaneously, she has to wear two (one fitted back to front). So it really is a false economy :(

Yes, and not to mention the friction burns are a bastard!

I thought you got your supplies from Lidl, the ones labelled "Le Dix Dude" (grand).

Sadly, that was in the days when leakage was light. I now make my own 'soaker pants' from used army parachutes.

Remember Billy Connolly's stand up about his giant incontinence pants, which he tied off at the ankles before going disco dancing? That was quality :D

Classic! Actually, one of the reasons why I'm into toilet humour is because it's a big Scottish thing. The fact is, most Scots find discussing piss, shit, male/female genitals, bodily functions and smut ENORMOUSLY funny!!

Have you ever watched the Scottish comedy series 'Two Doors Down'? If not, check it out. It's simply about everyday living for some middle-class couples in a posh part of Glasgow, although some their behaviour is distinctly 'unposh':

They used to do a cheaper one than their own brand and they were excellent. So of course they discontinued them.

If you think I'm paying out a fortune for some fancy Gillette thing then you must be crazy. Never understood the fascination some blokes have with shaving and shaving 'products.' I'd grow a beard but it would be all grey and make me look about 90 years old. Plus they never suited me anyway. Skinny little blokes with beards just look wrong.

Lol.... I use a good electric one now, which is a lot less hassle! Used to be into buying nice razors for wet shaving, expensive foam/soaps and all the malarkey that went with it, but can't be arsed now with the faff. Got a few grey hairs, but fortunately most of it is still brown!

Never been into beards, though. They always make you look like an old man, which I know now is the 'trendy look' among hipsters:rolleyes:

I use an electric in the week but usually wet shave at the weekend.

A beard makes some sense if you are young but attempting to look older and wiser. If you're already old and wise like me then what's the point?

When they had those 'grow a beard' months a few years back some of the youths I know grew the most terrible looking beards ever - like something from an Edwardian costume drama. It wasn't a good look even in 1904 and it really isn't now.

Marco
25-02-2019, 15:26
A beard makes some sense if you are young but attempting to look older and wiser.

I get it, but I doubt I'd have adopted that look, even had it been in fashion when I was a teenager, as I've always wanted to look young, even when I was young [plus my old man would've kicked my arse for going out looking like Catweazle], and now I'm older, I still like to look as young as possible (and dress that way, too), which is why I don't 'do' beards.

It's also why I keep my hair (what's left) super-short [much easier looked after that way, too], rather than allow any grey hair that's there to grow and become really obvious, or worse go for the 'Friar Tuck' look!!:spew:

If you want to look as young as possible, when you're in your 50s and over, then stay clean-shaven and keep your hair (if applicable) as short as possible. Quite simply, there's nothing more ageing, aside from a bushy grey beard, as long (dirty and unkept) straggly grey hair, especially with a big bald patch in the middle!:D:doh:

I think you look fine, Roy. With hair it's a personal thing. I've never had even medium-length hair (always been short), so I'm not used to the sensation of having hair around my ears or flopping down over my face, or onto my neck... Ugh!

Therefore, if I feel as if I 'have hair', it annoys the hell out of me, so my golden rule is if I can pinch my hair at the sides or back, it's too long! That's why I go for a 'No1' (for the sides and back), plus scissors on the rest, and have it cut every two weeks by a hairdresser I've known for years, to keep it super-short. If it starts getting 'bushy' at all, at the sides or back, it does my tits in:eyebrows:

I can't stand that 'Eggheads'. They are so smug looking (especially Daphne can she actually see through that squint?) and although I've only seen a few, I've never seen them lose. I reckon the show's questions are weighted in their favour.

There is one woman I used to see on there though (probably still on it) whom I definitely would - a proper gilf. I would have her recite the period table just so I'd last a bit longer.

When I see them sat there in a row, I imagine them as ducks at a fairground shooting gallery. Now that would be entertaining.

I think it's 1974, because it's definitely my second year at university. The shirt had long pointy collars; I had one of those round collar ones a few years previously. It was bright red. I don't think the reading lamp was ever used, not by me at any rate. That was red, too.

I've been helping my other half with her house hunting & we've been to see quite a few. Apart from some having soundbar based type av systems none have had 'proper hifis'. Today we viewed a tidy four bed detached but what interested me more was that the fella had a 'proper hifi' (it was tucked away in the dining room with no apparent listening chair, I reasoned it had been moved for 'staging' purposes). There was a fairly up to date LP12 which, from what he said, had had a fair few upgrades fitted with a Kandid MC cart & a Primare 'stack' with another Linn box (SUT?) & some PMC stand mount speakers. I was just about to ask for a listen when he fired it up voluntarily, he played what sounded like some indifferent R&B from the 80s from a 12" single. I think he thought I would be blown away. The sound? thin top end, muddy middle & very little bass, I just said 'sounds good'. I guess the little standmounts didn't help matters but I also got the impression the source wasn't great.

Today I had a couple come to view my four bed detached house, but the guy seemed more interested in my hi fi, which comprises an LP12/Kandid MC cartridge, some Primare gear and my beloved PMC DB1's.

I could see he was itching to hear it, so I gave him a quick demo. I could tell he was blown away, and was particularly impressed with detailed top end, fullsome mids and clean fast bass. I think he was a little bit jealous, and grudgingly conceded that it 'sounds good' (classic British understatement!) I reckon the little standmounts help matters, but the real star is the source.

I don't think they'll be putting an offer in for the house, I have a feeling he'll want to use his money to re-think his own set up.

Genuinely  (but I don't think she wants to live in Lancashire & it'd be a hell of drive for me to visit her)

Yes it would be a bit of a trek, but consider this: For the price of a four bed detached in Essex, you could buy a whole town in East Lancs, and that would include a municipal swimming baths.

Plus we have proper chippies with gravy, mushy peas and curry sauce - non of this saveloys nonsense.

For me the municipal baths would be a deal breaker, throw in a friendly northern local & I'm there! (can you still get mild?)

Tommy there is not a good example of your average friendly northerner, but that's what Fray Bentos pies does to you. Having said that putting a plate of jellied eels in front of him, or taking him to a pie 'n' mash shop is unlikely to cheer him up. I have a mate who's a dead ringer for Tommy, and he's a miserable shite too.

Fray Bentos pies

Used to have those on caravan holidays to the Isle of Wight, if you put them in the tiny calor gas oven at 8 in the morning they were barely warm by tea time to have with those horrible tinned potatoes.

I'm sure Tommy ('I'll stop on me own') would love 2 pie, mash & liquor, certainly if you told him the liquor was made from stewed eel juice..

I probably shouldn't be talking about cakes, I've been cake-free for 2 months now. But my sponsor thinks the more I talk about it the better. Cravings have reduced quite a bit, though I find I'm smoking more to compensate. Small price to pay I suppose.

The twelfth step is the hardest, where you have to go round and apologise to everyone for eating their cakes.

Myself I was on the wagon for two years until I had some bad news one day and I ate an entire Cadbury's Flake cake. I was halfway through it before I even realised what I was doing. It's that fresh dairy cream. You never really lose the craving for it.

The vet gave me a scrip so I'm back down to two chocolate eclairs a day. Feeling strong enough now that I think I can cut down it to one by the end of the month.

Last night was the first time I've been in a pub this year (apart from getting a bite to eat). I met my brother and some of his mates - I was only there from 7pm till 8.30. Lol - the idea is that you choose something difficult to give up, so it tests your willpower. In reality, in that respect, I'd be harder for me to have given up listening to music, watching TV or posting on here for six weeks, than alcohol. I don't really miss it, save when I sit down to a nice Sunday lunch with a glass of mineral water, rather than Margaux!

Other than that, I'm happy with soft drinks, water and tea/coffee, which at any time of the year, is what I drink most:)

Forgive my ignorance, but is Lent a Catholic thing? I, and most people I come across aren't Catholics, but I know lots of these folk have "given something up" for Lent. I suppose lots of people embrace it for other reasons, making lifestyle changes, albeit temporary, rather like that most temporary of changes, the New Year resolutions.

I have given up pancakes for Lent, and as I didn't have any on Shrove Tuesday, Lent will be particularly lengthy this year.

Talking about pancakes has now made me want some, so sod it, I'm going to make some! I'll just abstain from having them with ice cream :)

Macca

Pigmy Pony

Never tried shop-bought ones, I assume you would just microwave them for a few minutes.

I should give them a go - the shittest part of pancake days for me is that I get the job of making them, which means about an hour of making the damned things for everyone, with just a few minutes eating them.

I know you said that, but I was questioning whether it might extend to other varieties of Christian. My ex missus came from an Irish Catholic family, and they'd do things like not eat meat on a Friday. But they would never have given up alcohol for Lent. No way.

Marco
16-03-2019, 21:40
Ah I see... Can't comment on other Christians, as I'm not au fait with their faith. However for Catholics, on certain days, such as Good Friday, it's what's called fast and abstinence, and you shouldn't eat meat then, and indeed just lightly all day.

As I said, giving up alcohol for 6 weeks really isn't that big a deal. as alcohol doesn't rule my life. In fact, I'm not addicted to anything. I miss having a few glasses of wine with a nice meal at home, and if we're going out to a country pub, I miss having a pint of real ale, but that's it.

It would be much harder giving up home-cooked food, and eating ready meals, or Mc Donalds for 6 weeks!!:spew:

Marco.

I've given up hope for Lent.

Actually, fasting isn't what it was. When my mother was young, you had to fast for twelve hours before Holy Communion. By the time I was a nipper it had dropped to three hours, then one hour. By now I expect you're OK as long as you're not actually eating as you approach the altar rails. I guess God must be getting more lenient in His old age.

The other thing on Good Friday was a Mass (mostly in Latin) that seemed to go on for ever, and which included a prayer for the conversion of the Jews. You couldn't have that now, of course. It's PC gone mad, I tell you!

Lol, there was a bloke at our church who had converted from Judaism to Catholicism. Out of the frying pan and into the fire, you might say. Ha - all these rather draconian tales of 'church life as a Catholic' is so far removed from what I experienced when I grew up, so as to almost make me think we're talking about a different religion!

Things were rather more laidback/less staid in Catholic churches when I grew up, either when I went church at school or when I was at home, otherwise it would've probably put me off for life!!

My parents were strict Catholics, insofar as they went to mass, obeyed the 10 commandments, and as far as possible tried to lead a good (and holy) life, which was how I was brought up, but there was never the draconian control/brainwashing or 'doom and gloom', often portrayed here for life as a Catholic, or Christian.

My parents used religion to teach me good morals/manners , and how to be a caring and considerate person, all of which paid dividends, and which is why I continue practicing my faith to this day. The single most important thing to me in life is my Catholic faith, as God has given me so many wonderful things to be grateful for.

Yeah. I'd mastered the Creed and the Our Father in Latin so as to qualify to be an altar boy, then, after a couple of years, it all switched to English. I stopped being an altar boy after a furious row with the parish priest over wearing 'unsuitable' shoes for an early morning Mass during the summer holidays. I remember saying 'I don't think God cares what shoes I wear', and that was it. I had to hand in my cassock.

As with many things, our attitude towards religion will be largely influenced by our childhood experiences. My uncle used to 'pimp out' his wife and daughters to his friends from his local church group, while my step dad was apparently beaten almost daily by the nuns at the convent where he was raised. He's in the clink now and will die in there, good riddance.

It only takes a few bad apples...

Absolutely, which is why your views, in that respect, will be very different from mine. That thing with your uncle is horrible.

I've only ever had happy/positive experiences from being brought up and educated as a Catholic, both as a child and adult, plus having a belief in God has provided me with great comfort in difficult times, which is why my Catholic faith is a big part of my life - and always will be. Del's the same, and it's probably one of the reasons why we're so close and have been happily married now for nearly 30 years:)

I don't think my views are different, as in spite of the experiences of others in my family I have no negative feelings towards religion, or religious folk. I simply take people as I find them - there are good 'uns and wrong 'uns in every walk of life. I did go to Sunday school at that particular church for 2 or 3 years, and only have good memories of that.

I was in a church last week for my father-in-law’s funeral - the first Irish Catholic funeral I’ve been to and, christ it was it dreary!

It went on for nearly two hours and I was shivering in the draughty old church by the end of it. Give me a nice, British, heathen cremation that’s over in 25 minutes any day!

On a more serious note, I genuinely hate burials. I think the idea of sticking someone you loved into a box and dumping them into the ground to be worm food is horrible. The father-in-law’s funeral was the worst as I was asked if I’d do a spot of pallbearing, which, of course, I was more than happy to do. Unfortunately, I didn’t realise this meant I’d be one of the people actually lowering him into the grave, which I did not like one bit.

mum and dad had a radiogramme/ record player. was a nice piece with the usual Garrard deck in.. valve amp etc but in a fairly modern cabinet. He wasnt overly impressed and bought himself a sony music centre(top of the range in the day). It was a big leap forward, although now it wouldnt sound so great I guess.

My parents 1950's Blaupunct Arkansas here, it's mono but with three speakers, big elliptical in the middle and two smaller units at either end of the cabinet. It has really good reproduction.

The old man had a big floorstanding HMV wind-up gramophone with a large folded horn inside that he played his 78's on. In the late fifties started buying LP's so he ripped the innards out of the HMV and installed a BSR autochanger deck, home built (and designed) valve amp and a 12" Rola speaker. He used that until he died.

It was one of these.

This is the deck he installed.

Was actually sat in Mum's loft like that for some years, I'd had the speaker out of it, a full range Celestion as I recall.

I was in a church last week for my father-in-law’s funeral - the first Irish Catholic funeral I’ve been to and, christ it was it dreary!

It went on for nearly two hours and I was shivering in the draughty old church by the end of it.
.

Must have been a rush job then. You actually got off lightly. Don't ever go to a full Catholic Wedding Mass, you won't be out in under 3 hours.

Well. perhaps it's best not to joke about it, I've seen too many pass away these last few years. In the last two years, my good boss from when I was at GEC / Marconi / BAE Systems, and my good boss from when I was at Electrolux.

Did you have the full nuptial mass though? Also depends on how many hymns they have. They can really pad it out. One I went to they had the hymns printed out and made into a booklet they handed out to everyone as they walked in. It was the size of a 'phone directory! Not so bad these days as it used to be as you can have a crafty look at your 'phone now and again to relieve the tedium.

Ha - I'm surprised you have to ask... Of course! One of my old school mates, who later became a priest, married us (in 1991), and we (Del and I) both enjoyed every minute of the wedding ceremony. Didn't last any longer than 2 hours, though:)

Still have the video, orders or service, and all sorts.

My brother had his friend record his wedding on video. Then my sister went and taped Coronation Street over it, I kid you not. The bride was inconsolable. To be fair, he should have broke off the tab :(

You see if he'd had the full Catholic there's still be another 2 hours or so left of it on the tape after Corro had finished.

Some relative of the wife gave her a video of their wedding. Turned out to be a porn tape of her and her husband [emoji23] think I've still got it.. Ha ha. She never spoke to us again.

My brother's wedding was a full traditional Jewish service. I'd never seen one let alone attended but it was a beautiful event, quite different. The closest relatives of the bride and groom stand under the Hoopa, a canopy symbolising a tent, with the bride and groom and the Rabbi. A lot of the service was in Hebrew and there was a traditional choir. Even as a non Jew I was welcomed and made to feel comfortable and involved.
The only problem was it was a really hot day and the temperature in the synagogue was like the surface of the sun. I almost passed out a couple of times and it was a great relief to sit down after the 45 minute service, also to have a quick smoke with the Rabbi on the quiet.

One of the most interesting and enjoyable wedding I have attended was that of an Indian work colleague of mine who had the full Hindu ceremony.

There were probably well over 200 people there, but what surprised me at the time was that only the immediate family members actually took part in the ceremony. Everyone else was busy talking, catching up with the news, gossiping and probably doing business. The children were running around and playing games. Thinking about it, I shouldn't have been that surprised as in India (and in Africa), weddings and funerals are big occasions. People come from miles around, sometimes travelling for a few days to get there, so when they congregate they also take the opportunity to catch up on the news.

The opportunity to have a slap up meal is another draw - and needless to say, the reception at this particular wedding was excellent.

Now I think about it, it wasn't my brother's friend, it was my dad. So the tape will have been lying around the place till my brother and his new wife got back from their honeymoon. The year was 1981, there were only 3 TV channels, and no catch-up. So at least they got to watch the Corrie they missed while on holiday :)

Bloody thousands of 'em here. I had a couple of the locals do my car's MOT yesterday, good lads they are. I surprise some of them with a bit of Punjabi now and then, they think nobody white understands what they're saying.

Enjoy, if it's your bag... The Sikh factor might make things interesting. I don't go to weddings unless I know the bride and groom well, and also most of the guests (so we all have something in common), as I don't do meaningless 'chit-chat' with strangers.
