Well they still have about eighteen months to go - time enough for them to do more damage to the country.
They have become desparate, thrashing around trying to appease their voters, and in doing so becoming more and more right wing. One 'Red Wall' Tory MP is already voicing his desire to have the death penalty restored.
I may be disgusted with the present Government, but I have to praise the Civil Service.

This time I needed to renew my passport. I could have done it all online, but in having to supply new photographs, I decided to make a postal application. Well again the service was very fast; the new passport ariving in just under two weeks after posting off the application. The only difference was that in total it cost me £107.
So now I have a new black passport, the same size as the old maroon EU ones, but one which is less versatile! :doh:

OK, so 'versatile' was not the best adjective to use; I couldn't think of anything more appropriate when I posted. Thinking about it, 'less convenient' would have been a better choice of words. What I meant to imply is that since the new passport is not an EU passport, I won't be able to use the quick route through passport control when I visit any European country.
And I may not get away with it just being looked at, it will probably get date stamped, so use up valuable pages (even though I have a 50 page version). It's a ten year passport: I fully expect to visit Africa, possibly twice a year, so that requires 20 visas each occupying two pages in the passport. You always have leave four pages free, so that means only 6 pages for EU stamps.
The old hardback passports were better (though I don't think they were of 20 year duration); holding one often expedited matters more efficiently.

That's what I was wondering, when I went to Rome in 2017 there was only two options, Schengen and everyone else. At least to my recollection, maybe there was three options.

Something like 30 pubs a month are closing, due to the greatly increased costs of beer and energy. When it is a pub like the one you have cited, it's a real shame and a loss. If it is a Weatherspoons pub, it's no loss at all! :D
To save on money and not have clothes all over when I've done biggish washing I picked this up.
34p per HR and I reckon for most stuff an HR is all it'll need.
Gets quite hot and humid so popped it into bathroom. It's also heating the upstairs as a free extra.
Just pop stuff on hangers and put them inside, zip up and that's it. Folds down when not used.

its a clothes drying pod. a bit like a heated airer but in a bag to up the temp. it can get up to 70c apparently. has a timer on it or you can just do it manually. if its getting too warm you can open zip a bit. impressed with it tbh

Had a nice drive out today. Drove through Blackpool (which has seen better days - that's as charitable as I can be about it). I suppose most seaside towns are in decline these days, and have become repositories for the drugs and alcohol dependant, and pretty much anyone who can't or won't work.
Then on to Lytham (much better). Had lunch there, then Anita did some clothes shopping while I did a tour of the charity shops. She spent 50 quid on a cardigan and a handbag, I blew 99p on a Gabrielle CD. Good selection of vinyl though, as long as Des O'Connor and Cliff Richard in falling-apart sleeves are your thing.

It's true that as from about the '80s we have become used to enjoying 'non-seasonal' vegetables and fruits here in the UK - to the point that when there is a shortage we get upset.
The current shortage is due to what was traditionally known as "the Gap": the time gap between when locally-produced veg was unobtaiable due to winter weather, and the Spring growing season. The Gap is now filled by importing veg and fruit from Europe and Africa. North Africa has suffered from very cold weather, snow and hail; hence low yield. Europe is enjoying what it has produced, and sees no real reason to share it with the UK. In the UK, local farmers are unable to sell to supermarkets because the supermarkets won't pay the prices asked (the 'Contract problem'), and we can't import from the EU for reasons mentioned and also because of Brexit we have made it more difficult to do so. :doh:

Shortage is due to bad weather in Morocco and Spain, not sure what the gov is supposed to do about that. Waste of Parliamentary time to even raise it but I suppose it will play well in the sticks.
Interestingly I bought a punnet of strawberries last weekend, they are from Morocco too, I suppose they are less vulnerable to stormy weather even though they are very close to tomatoes genetically.

They have become quite expensive of late (now £4.10 a packet), but often the local Co-op will sell them as a loss leader for £2.50 a packet. When the reductions occur, I will 'stock up'. Otherwise I may buy museli ifrom Holland and Barrett, to which I will add a mixture of nuts.

I can sort you out with a van through work, they are always selling vehicles. You'd have to collect it from Stoke or Tonbridge Wells though so not very convenient.

Thanks guys, I think it is just a bit ott, and I'm not sure i can relax properly in a space that pristine. As long as it's clean enough that if I drop my burger on the floor i can pick it up and eat it, that'll do for me.
But less than £100 per night for the two of us, that's not bad. Won't be that cheap by Easter, when the hoardes descend :)
pics will have been taken when everything was crisp and new, and fully set for pics, so it may not look quite as it does in pics

I went into the office of the local double glazing company who provided much of my jobs for the past 3 years, and told them to stick their work where the sun don't shine. In the politest possible way. Too much grief for too little money. I did my sums and decided I can do as well going back on my own, doing just a couple of days a week - finally I will be back in charge of my diary.
I came away feeling like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders, and Mrs. P is really chuffed too. She'll change her mind soon enough after a few weeks of me under her feet with my music tastes :doh:
I can now wear my old Plain Lazy t shirt with pride, though I may have to shed a few pounds - it seems to have shrunk in the wash.

Costa is 3 times the cost of McDonald's coffee, and really no better. But Mrs. P drags me into one wherever we go.
my coffee machine cost a fortune but every coffee i make is much better and cheaper than getting one from a shop and it hopefully will pay for itself that way. its great that it does most of it itself and is pretty top notch coffee. as i cant stand for long its a big boon. not sure ive had a costa but had a mcdonalds once and it was drinkable.

don't really think we have any 'real' seaside resorts up here as such. was i suppose a few down ayrshire coast, but they were really for fairly local folk on a day away or weekend. Scots usually went to places like Blackpool

Many of my wife's family retired there and enjoyed the place. We inherited the in-law's home and our daughter is there.
Apart from me and Mrs in London, the rest of the family are at the west of Cornwall. Nearly as far from Herne Bay as you can get going east.
the tesco delivery van went to my sons instead of me.. he had to take it back to van and come round corner to me lol

Thing I hate about coffee shops these days - in Brighton anyway, is there'a always some tosser with a laptop sat next to you tapping away. In fact many of Brighton's coffee shops are just rows of single tables with beanie hatted middle class clones sat at each table with screens in front of them, more like a work place than somewhere to wind down. I was thinking of opening a cafe called 'No Wifi'! Personally I prefer the atmosphere of the traditional British tearoom, and frequent Sussex's finest, and avoid the bogus ones. Nothing gets me more riled than a chocolate brownie, I'm a hardore victoria sandwich aficionado.

Recently Anita has been having some pain in her back, which is worse as she breathes in. She went to her doctor who sent her for an x ray. This showed something "unusual" in her chest, so she was then sent for a CT scan. Which she went for yesterday. Actually two scans, one was preceded by some intravenous stuff which I assume was for contrast. Then she had to wait to hear back about the results.
Now, 24 hours later she gets a call from her GP, who informs her that she has two broken ribs! Obviously she's relieved, the news could have been so much worse. But she has no idea how this happened. Women are tough.

Just some thoughts.
Modern attitudes to older things are strange.
Are what I regard as normal skills so lacking? In this age of 'disposable' items, there are many TV programmes dedicated to renovation/restoration/recycling/repairing/upcycling, etc. and folk seem amazed by the often basic skills displayed. These activities would have been regarded as normal when I was young, people mended things! Repairing and restoring things is something I have always done, as did most of my family.
I don't get the 'shabby chic' idea. In my book if you renovate something, making it look old and worn again is counter-productive and daft! And 'patina' is a modern fad, nobody used to baulk at polishing, repainting or revarnishing items to literally improve them.
Also, elderly cars, trucks and bikes with an intentionally rusty look seem popular now, god knows why (Henry Cole carries some of the blame :)). If an older vehicle is getting scruffy, just tidy it up! Fifty years ago owning and driving a rusty motor would have been regarded as unfortunate and the owner would likely be either broke or lazy. Did you know that you can even get 'rusty car look' vinyl body wrap now? That's just silly.

i never had a new bike in my life they were all, can i say... 'recycled' lol in many ways people became wealthier and just wanted new, new, new... now many want old but have lost the skills to recover/repair stuff.

We went out for a walk yesterday, a whole 2 miles! with a cappucinno in a cafe halfway along. Probably as much calories there as we burned. Largely quite boring, apart from the bit where Anita went on her arse, that was quite funny. Apparently I'm cruel and heartless, though I did help her get back up.
Trail was very busy, had to say hello to a lot of folk :(

the world seems more and more on a road to a major war. i guess its been a while since we had a major all in war and throughout history it shows these things will happen again and again mostly due to greed and desire for more and more power. nuclear weapons seemed to hold things together but i fear due to their proliferation in different hands, eventually someone is going to push their luck.

you mean regarding nuclear proliferation? I think that while it's not impossible (just highly unlikely) that a tactical weapon might be used at some point in the future (Ukraine?) that doesn't mean the start of WW3.
WW1 started because Germany was being squeezed for resources in what was still an imperial age.
WW2 in Europe started because of nutters taking advantage of a severe economic depression and the problems caused by the Treaty Of Versailles, and in the Pacific because Japan was squeezed for resources.
I don't see the same situations now. if Japan had known that the retaliation for their attack on Pearl Harbour would be the USA nuking Tokyo I think they would have found a different way out of their problem.

I think it will reach a stalemate, as there is very little progress from either side. WW3 is unlikely, as there is too much at stake. All wars end up at the negotiating table.

When you redefine threats as something one country is doing to another thousands of miles away, then war is something you're constantly involved in. The rhetoric coming from the US has increased 100 fold over the past 6 months over China, who may be about to invade Taiwan, but why is that America's business? This is national Russian TV, it's quite normal, the Russians are not like us. It wouldn't surprise in the least to hear air raid sirens before the end of this year, and it will be entirely our own fault. If I lived in Russia, that is what I'd be doing. Even though Russia is the aggressor here, it is still a war on its border with Nato states supplying Ukraine with weaponry. I agree there is no legitimate or barely understandable reason why Putin invaded Ukraine in 2022, but this conflict stretches back much further, to 2014 when Russia annexed Crimea. That was perfectly understandable, if not excusable, as Ukraine leased Russia the Sevastopol port for part of its naval fleet, and it risked losing that when a Western looking govt. replaced Yanukovych in the 'Euromaidan' coup. US interference in Ukraine, as in 2008 when Bush proffered Georgian/Ukrainian Nato membership is provocation, Nuland going to the Maidan in 2014 and handing out cookies is provocation. It may be those states 'right' to seek Nato membership, but the result is an alienating Russia lashing out.

Unxpectedly it looks like we will have good weather over Easter.
Today started lovely and sunny, if a bit cold, and whilst having a very late breakfast, I heard the jingle of an ice cream van. Encouraged by this I put on my overalls, got out the lawn mower, cut the grass and did some rudimentary gardening.
Tomorrow should be nice as well - I might even wash the car, it needs it.
(If all this domestic trivia seems banal, it is posted as an antidote to all the previous doom and gloom concerning Ukrane. Russia may threaten to use battlefield nukes, but it is sabre-rattling: China would not allow it.)

Agreed those two nouns are almost homophonic, but it really isn't much different to describing a
country or region that is an istand: The island of Malta; The Canary Islands; Cape Verde Islands; The island of Madagascar; The Isle of Man, etc..
But on the other hand most island countries are simply called by their name: Iceland; Greenland; Phillipines; Japan; Cuba, etc..

the dm etc, is inclined to vastly overstate things to sell their rag. not saying things are not in dangerous territory tho.
.. what will be will be so as you cant change it, just try and get on with what you can. personally if balloon goes up, im near enough to a huge petro-chemical plant that i doubt i will feel a thing:)
The Taiwan thing has been going on since 1945. Originally the fear was that Taiwan would invade China then it swapped over some time in the 1970s.

Aura, I did not know that... always spreads across from left side, covering more and more vision, then fading after 30 mins or so. Never got the headaches fortunately, though there's a first time for everything.

I get exactly the same symptoms Steve. No headache though and apparently it is not something to worry about. Had a lot fewer since stopping work but when dehydrated I occasionally get one now.

Had a read up about it, and as you say nothing to worry about. Interesting that yours have become less frequent since stopping work, for me it appears to be more frequent since I semi-retired last month - might be the stress of all the jobs Mrs. P is finding for me to do around the house :(
Article says that it can be brought on by something we eat, but in my case it might be that I eat everything that's not nailed down.
So far today: 2 posh coffees, 4 shredded wheat, 4 crumpets, 2 ham & cheese toasties, and an ice cream cornet. Maybe it was the cheese.

Just one of those big coffee shop jobs starts messing with me.
who knows tbh... hormones, stress etc may be most likely but it may just be an issue with brain wiring and the way it reacts under certain stimuli. my sister never got to bottom of it but its not as bad now as it was when she was younger. she is in her 70's now tho.

The occasional mispelling of his name was one of the things that irked Raab, with him demanding an apology from whoever the miscreant was. (There is a rumor that some Civil Servants would hold a competition to see how many 'a's they could slip into his name, before it was noticed. I think the record was 5. :) )
IMO he should have resigned on principle (being Foreign Minister at the time) after the fall of Kabul. But then we can't expect any of Government to do anything on principle, or even behave with integrity.

Because repairs to modern cars and vans require plugging in to diagnostic equipment no one can afford, followed by expensive replacement (never repair) of parts which are only designed to last 5 years before going pop, I predict a rise in demand for old motors which can be fixed with a big hammer.
I wouldn't mind one of the very earliest Transits, but prices have gone :eek:

Used to work on Mk III Escorts. As my mate used to say they are just a horseless carriage, no technology at all. Fix any issue with a hammer, socket set and an arc welder.
Anything not working like the heater, ten minutes tops just to stick in another one. Scrapyard was full of them, no trouble getting any part for pennies (or less if you just chucked them over the fence to your mate waiting in the lane on the other side...But we won't go into that).
