In spite of my declining ability to spell correctly, whenever I spot poor spelling when out and about it feels like an itch I can't scratch. There is a shop near me which specialises in batteries, mostly for automotive uses, who have a sign in the window declaring that they sell lithium iron batteries. They really should know better. I really should go in there and tell them, that sign's been there for some years now.
And don't get me started on unnecessary apostrophe's :(

I suppose they never had to, until now. Mrs. Pony cannot pronounce 'polaroid' no matter how hard she tries. Always comes out poilaroid. She can say polar bear, and haemorrhoid, but can't put them together.

well sitting for long priods can cause piles; the temp or moisture level is irrellevant i think, but its mostly due to straining

Haemorrhoids are varicose veins in the rectum/anus, so are more likely to be caused by straining, either through heavy lifting, or as you say, by straining during a bowel motion.

I would say no, not directly anyway. Though if sedentary work wasn't balanced with regular exercise, toilet habits could be affected. Infrequent dumps gives it time to 'compact' and makes it harder to shift.
I had them, or one, a few years ago, fortunately only for a couple of weeks, and that came from straining I'm sure. Not all it's 'cracked' up to be :(

Evening all!! Been absent for a long while ,but having regualr covid arguements with loons on my other forum made we yearn for a quieter place!!
I am 4 and a half weeks into a total hip replacement so only really starting to feel human again after a fair few months (or years) hobbling around and feeling grumpy !!
The one thing that has been a god send to me ,both in hospital and at home is the I Pod classic that my daughter left when she move out !!
I recharged it , formatted it and spent a few days putting nearly all my cd,s onto it !!

It has the facility to play songs by title ,so effectively mixing up and playing songs , all 4 hundred or so , randomly ,or select an album !! And because I bought the Yamaha CD 3200?? can recall the proper number now ,but it links into the usb slot provided and I can either listen on the move or play through the cd player Apple Lossless :eek:
Very old school to all you Spotify users etc but what a great thing the Classic was (once you get the hang of the controls !!)

All those 'farming' programmes are good escapism for us townies too - Yorkshire Vet, and the Yorkshire couple with the eighty or so kids that all muck in - she watches them all, and I quite like them too :)

Just rewatched the entire 'The Sweeney' series, that Thames TV intro sure brings back memories..........Rollocking good fun, the sexist comments provide the funniest dialogue, the hammy plots seem quaint, interesting how much crime has changed, then it was all bank robberies and lorry hijacks, now its internet fraud and drug dealing. Makes one pine for the pre internet days, I know, I could always turn it off............the internet that is.
The Sweeny puts modern police shows to shame in every respect, plots, acting, dialogue, direction.
My uncle was in CID through the Sixties and Seventies, he always said The Sweeney was totally realistic except that their office was too tidy - there should have been huge piles of paperwork everywhere.

we get what we pay for.. thugs mostly. any good ones going in soon get told to go with the sway of the force. back each other up or your finished.

not so much mine, but local accent here isnt great; kinda unpleasant to folk elsewhere i guess although you do get used to it. took me 20 years lol. mine is a mismash of several i guess as i moved about a lot so picked up a bit of every. not saying its good tho. so just mishmash scottish which i can change to irish at times if in mood lol

I went to a private school in Bristol and received elocution lessons there. Moved around a bit, attended a couple of Universities, so I'm not sure how I sound to others - probably well spoken but not posh.

My dad was very fussy about English being spoken properly. He disliked affected 'hooray Henry posh' speech and tried to be accent free with precise diction. It rubbed off on me when young, fortunately, I managed to shake that off and develop a touch of yob :D.
just had a lass in injecting me with moderna.. saves me having to try and go to place as i dont think i would manage myself tbh. she will have to return with a flu one as she was out of them

I don't think that will happen. Perfectly normal for a government in mid term to be polling low and losing by-elections, even without a global pandemic. Next election still a long way off and a week is a long time in politics let alone three years.
Plus new MPs don't really have any say in how the party (:D) is run.

I thought some of the Tory fightback against the Woke agenda was heartening, but like many Tory promises, they are largely hot air. Woke ideas have been firmly entrenching themselves in the UK since the 80s, back then it was called Political Correctness. Charities, universities, healthcare, much more push back is needed. Pregnant mothers are now routinely referred to - collectively anyway - in NHS literature as 'pregnant people', it's so Orwellian, and shows complete disdain for normal folk, on the one hand, a lot of this crap doesn't matter in our day to day lives, but on the other, you wonder how far it will go, until it does. I was also utterly dismayed by all the BLM stuff over the last year or two, I find the narrative has been completely skewered, same with these woke types constantly banging about Britain's colonial past, with statues quietly been removed all over the country. Again not really the sort of thing that matters to people in their everyday lives, it feels performative, who really cares about statues anyway? Unless they start gunning for more important figures like Churchill or Queen Victoria, personally not a fan of either, but what does scare me is the Maoist 'Year zero' thinking of these zealots. One things for sure, important matters like affordable housing, immigration, and the state of our town centres post covid, will hardly be addressed, to be honest, politicians are really of no use to us, we have to do these things ourselves, and with the almost complete lack of public action these days, that results in 'every man for himself'.
When I visited Namibia, back in the '90s, the topic of what to do with all the numerous statues of the German colonialists cropped up as a national debate. Most people said that despite having suffered under original German colonial rule, and later British rule (undertaken by the South African government), the statues were part of their history and should remain.
The statue of Edward Colston was erected to celebrate his being a major benefactor to the City of Bristol, establishing two schools and several other city projects. The fact that his wealth was generated through the slave trade with all the suffering that involved, was not mentioned. It is right that these statues should be removed and put into a museum, where the true history can be displayed for all to read.

When I visited Namibia, back in the '90s, the topic of what to do with all the numerous statues of the German colonialists cropped up as a national debate. Most people said that despite having suffered under original German colonial rule, and later British rule (undertaken by the South African government), the statues were part of their history and should remain.
The statue of Edward Colston was erected to celebrate his being a major benefactor to the City of Bristol, establishing two schools and several other city projects. The fact that his wealth was generated through the slave trade with all the suffering that involved, was not mentioned. It is right that these statues should be removed and put into a museum, where the true history can be displayed for all to read.
It may not matter to you, but if you are black or have black friends, then it will.
I wonder whether that view has changed in Nambia since the 90s? And if as a country under direct colonial rule decided to keep the statues of its oppressors, then why not a country where the oppressors were actually from, I guess that's it, our collective guilt, as performed by 'the woke', who decide daily what we should and shouldn't atone for.

in fairness to the 'woke' if it wasn't for the 'woke' kicking up a fuss in the 18th century we might still have slavery now. But that battle was won a long time ago. What they want now is something entirely different.

I agree with Macca, although I'm not sure 'the point' is to divide us, but that certainly ends up being the result. The thing is before the George Floyd/BLM thing happened, the issue of 'problematic' (a favourite Woke term) statues wasn't so pressing. It seemed to be confined to statues in the grounds of elite universities, specifically Oxford 'Rhodes must fall' and Cambridge - a 'looted' statue of a cockerel that was handed back to Nigeria in 2021. One wonders that hundreds of years after the event, what these performative displays are supposed to achieve. The main reason given for the removal of these statues is that they are offensive to students of colour, so it boils down to an issue of student welfare, the same sentiment that the 'cry bullies' of Durham university are now expressing after their outrage that Rod Liddle should be able to give a speech there https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-tyne-59552264. If these students felt so strongly about learning at a university so directly wedded to Britain's establishment, then one does wonder how they can even bring themselves to study there in the first place, let alone eat directly from the demon hand which oppressed their ancestors by accepting a Rhodes scholarship! The G Floyd incident was May 2020, the Colston statue was pulled down in June 2020, then a few months after councils all over the country are nervously having meetings about which statues in their boroughs may be problematic. And so we end up with a statue of the Scouts founder being considered for removal, and so on, where does it end? These activists are so short sighted, so sure of their righteousness that they are calling for the Churchill statue in Whitehall to be removed, down here in Brighton the huge Queen Vic statue on one of our main avenues has also been targeted, and considering the right on nature of our local council, I wouldn't be surprised to find it gone! There is a similar argument going on in Spain at the moment around statues linked to Franco, this I think is quite different, with some still grieving over the victims of that conflict, the same rawness is nowhere near being felt in the UK statue debate.

Last week I thought it would be a nice Christmas treat for Anita if I played a record she might like, so I put on Alexander O'Neal's "Hearsay" album. She liked it so much (she used to have it on cassette in her Capri) I said I'd get it on CD for her.
Bought it on Ebay, then was told it would arrive 4th January. Bit late for Christmas, so I went on Amazon and ordered it there. Arrived the next day, then the day after that the Ebay one landed (I'd failed to cancel that one).
So this morning she assumed from the weight and shape (feels like a double!) I'd got her the latest "Now" CD. What a surprise! Two copies of Alexander O'Neal's album! She was very gracious about it. But not so pleased to find I'd accidentally signed up to Amazon Prime, which we already have :(

Got a ride earlier in my daughter's partner's latest car, a 2018 AMG E63 S. Wet roads, 604bhp and a young man keen to impress is a tricky combination, and how I managed to keep my lunch down I've no idea.
He says his previous three cars (Nissan GTR, Audi RS5, AMG 63 CLS) couldn't come near on the scare-yourself-shitless scale, and I can believe that. Totally bonkers, but a lovely place to be when it isn't moving.

Not a massive fan of minced pies to be fair, but I think there may be a couple. They demolished the remaining “pigs in blankets” from lunch, or at least they thought they did, I had the last laugh and kept some back for tonight’s tea! Don’t know about anyone else, but the “bits and pieces” teas at Christmas are the best meals - cold meats, a heart attack of a cheese board, pork pie, scotch eggs, some token greenery and coleslaw... :drool: not to mention the vintage port... :)

Agree on all counts, it's much scarier when you aren't the one "in control". And getting older makes it more so, when you have a greater sense of what happens if it all goes wrong.
I do get to open up the bike occasionally, but it's all carefully chosen moments, and most of the time I ride it at about four tenths of its potential. That's enough for me these days.

The technology will already be here - our sat nav always knows the speed limit of whichever road we're on, and warns of upcoming speed cameras. No doubt speed limiting will be employed just as soon as we get a transport minister with the balls to implement it, as it would be a surefire votes-loser.

inclined to think its gonna be on mileage. you will likely get a free allowance then pay on increasing levels. ice vehicles will no doubt pay more, and the poorer mileage you get the more you pay etc.

even with the nav off i get speed sign info(a camera watches for signs) and if i go to say 31/2 it will light up red. no audible, but i may have switched it off. i cant remember. car goes away on thursday so im going to have to relearn everything plus a few things

Has the law changed on the use of electric scooters etc on public roads? I'm seeing a lot of them on the road these days. Or is it just that the police have better things to do than chase them around.
Even stranger, this last couple of months I see each morning a bloke commuting on a motorized skateboard. He occupies the centre of his lane and keeps up with the traffic, and wears a helmet and elbow and knee pads. A part of me thinks that's fine, he's helping reduce congestion and pollution. But another part of me wonders where a motorist would stand insurance-wise if that skateboard lost control and ended up being a bonnet ornament.
e skateboards are illegal on public roads. e scooters, if legitimately hired through a scheme are allowed to be used as its a trial.
trials are being carried out in 32 cities around the UK.
E-scooters hired through these schemes can be ridden on roads and cycle paths and are insured by the operators. The scooters are limited to 15.5mph, with lower limits imposed in some areas via geofencing.

Number 6 could be interesting - making narrow roads impassable if many cars are parked on your side of the road. We have that problem around here with parents parking their cars to collect their kids from school.

I never thought I would use an iPad but its probably the device I use most, so a better model might make sense?

There's one of those VW Beetles been sat opposite my house for about two weeks now. One tyre is completely flat. Starting to wonder if it's been abandoned.
Thinking about breaking it bit by bit. Must be a few quid there.

Car is charging.. remote on phone is very handy. Biometriclly controlled so you need my finger to get in.
Up to 252 miles range, and 86% charged
Can defrost it, heat it up, lock and unlock etc all from my seat indoors.

A lot harder to lose your fingers than your keys. Just be sure to keep them within easy reach at all times, and don't let anyone else get their hands on them :)
I think it's probably the lack of a radiator grill that makes it look "interesting". But then a radiator grill on an electric car is unnecessary and just a wind scoop. Not good for economy. Personally I like it's face, better than Tesla's.

yup cheaper too. i dont have a fancy electic low rate for charging, so just same price for everything. i reckon its cost me about 2 quid for an equ of about a gallon or so in last car. so thats a third the cost. all rough est of course.

On Sky Arts just now, there was a documentary called 'The Cavern Club: The Beat Goes On', with an introduction saying "....a favourite haunt of the Beatles that now plays host to stars like Adele". That may be true, but it just shows how values change. The Beatles back then, would have been horrified to have been mentioned in the same breath as anybody like Adele.

The new one is on the same side of the road as the old one. There's an empty lot where the old one was, full of aircon vents for the shopping mall next door.
I went to the opening night of the new one. There were no Beatles there and it was packed so did not stay long.
The old Probe Records shop is just a few doors down. That's now a restaurant. I've eaten in there a few times but feels a bit weird knowing what it used to be like.

supermarkets have been discontinuing products I like for decades. Try buying some proper frozen American waffles these days. They all used to stock them including Asda which was the last to stop selling them some time back in the early 1990s.
even Amazon don't sell then in their 'American' shop.
I like the Sainsbury iced donuts but go in after 10am and they're sold out. That's always been the case. They have no way to tell how many they would have sold if they put more stock out.
Went into Kwik Save once, only after a couple of things, plain digestive biscuits, tin of tomato soup and I forget what else but it was something totally ubiquitous. Sold out of all three.
All of this was way before pandemic, shortage of drivers, shortage of shipping containers etc etc.
There should be some sort of tagger next to the price card you can swipe your phone on and it tells them 'Yes I would have spent some more money with you if you had the thing I wanted.'
With this ordering on-line thing they just flog you a 'substitute' instead so it's better for them as they still sell you something instead of you walking out empty-handed. No incentive to improve.
With the corner shop I just tell him what I want and he gets it in from the cash and carry. He still can't get proper waffles though.

no there's been no Kwik Save for years. We used to have Co-Op ('Pioneer'), Kwik Save and Iceland. If you want lack of stock that Co-Op was the worst ever, acres of empty shelves. Quite often they'd have no fresh meat at all. It was like living in Soviet Russia. This is years back too when lorry drivers were ten-a-penny.
The Kwik-Save became Lidl and then the idiot Council decided to bulldoze some Grade II listed Art Deco buildings and replace them with a big, ugly tin shed for a Sainsbury, which they justified by saying it would draw people in to the town and revitalise the place. (It didn't).
The crappy Co-Op closed about two months after the Sainsbury opened. It's now a BHF furniture shop.
Recently Iceland closed and the Lidl next door to it expanded into their old building so we now have a massive Lidl. Not been in it though.
I don't think these big supermarkets will close, likewise the retail parks. Whereas I see shopping as chore that has to be done as quickly as possible so I can get back to the telly, for many it seems to be an outing similar to going to Disneyland.
There's lots of people driving about 'going to places' for no other reason than they can't think of anything better to do.
