No doubt you detest vanilla and cinnamon as well.
I like those.
Having chicken salad tonight, avoiding the aforementioned veg and using new potatoes, radishes, lettuce, cress, sweetcorn and tomatoes, with mayo and pepper.
My favourite customer (who always sends me away with a few of his chickens' eggs) gave me half a dozen today, which he put in a closing carton which would not close. Nowhere near. I pity the poor chickens that had to push them out.
Also gave me some tomatoes including some interesting-looking 'tiger' tomatoes. Never heard of them, but I'm sure they'll be very nice.
I always buy extra large eggs.
Apropos 'tiger' tomatoes, I have never seen any for sale, but they appear to be conventional tomatoes but with a variegated skin. Let us know if they taste different. :)
I have no idea what you're talking about - was it some sort of TV endurance challenge?
it was an internet fad.. a extremely dangerous one too

Yes, I think one or two people died with it. There are plenty of Youtube videos for folk who like to see people paying dearly for their stupidity. Anita and some her family/friends had a go at it, never ended well. I managed to avoid it, I'm not as daft as I look.

He's now been caught by the police, in Chiswick as speculated.
Actually, it looks like I wasn't far out. He was caught on the stretch of the Grand Union Canal towpath I thought he might head for, a quarter of a mile beyond the north edge of Southall at Rowdell Road, Northolt, which I know well. Not far from here.

Best not to visit Thailand then - the formal greeting for men is to say "sa-wat-dii krap". And it doesn't mean "did you have a satisfactory bowel movement this morning?"

Good to know - so what is Thai for "A bit runny and most of it was floating, but on the whole I can't complain"
Edit: Just re-read your post, where it says "doesn't mean" :( Still, I now know a bit of Thai, and that one will stick with me.
I'm reminded of a story my aunt told me of a time when she and my uncle (a kitchen fitter) went on holiday. Whenever they came across German holidaymakers he greeted them with the only bit of German he knew, which he'd memorized from a kitchen installer's manual. Which translated to "left hand wall cupboard".

All this food-chat is making me peckish. The two giant boiled eggs which sat on rather than in the egg cups at lunchtime can only keep the hunger at bay for so long. Even with plenty of soldiers to dip in.
Hopefully Anita will be returning with our weekly Chinese soon, I've cleared a space for it with an unusual (for me) afternoon bog visit.

Eggs are a literal wonder food aren't they? I love em any ways, scrambled probably fave. And with the addition of fresh air they make souffles and meringues too! I eat them most days for breakfast, and then I may have a quiche later on, so some days 4 eggs!! I don't believe they raise cholesterol, not bad chol anyway. Oh I forgot, creme brulee!

decided to take a years energy supply price deal with my current supplier. its a bit less than current cost so hoping it will protect me from any potential large rise, as ive a feeling it might be a cold winter in europe.. anyway its not likely to cost me too much if they go down according to best forcast

Got the telly on CBS Reality (for some reason), the commercials were just on for so long, I forgot what programme I'd been watching!
Same as UK Gold. Even when the ads finally finish there's another couple of minutes of trailers to sit through.

Like a lot of channels these days - the programmes are there to give you something to look at while waiting for the next batch of adverts.
Sky are the worst - three quarters of their ads are for their own products: Sky Go, Sky Glass, Sky Cinema, Sky Mobile, Sky Smart Insurance. We get round it all by recording stuff and skipping through the ads.
I often watch Sky Art, but don't find the ad breaks too intrusive - I take the opportunity to make a cup of coffee. :)
If your paying for it they shouldn't be running ads too imo. Amazon run their own ads on their free content.
Even blurays etc often have about 20mins of what else you can buy which imo is outrageous.
Not just Blurays, even conventional DVDs have upfront adverts for contemporary films available to buy. Fortunately you can skip over them, but only one at a time.

what four cups an hour? Do you find your hand is shaking too much to be able to change channels? ;)
You're missing so much - June ('It's June, dad!') getting her funeral plan, the children drinking dirty water, Paul Daniel's widow fogging cupboard doors, and the whip-round to collect money to educate foreigners in how to look after a donkey.
Did I miss any?

Or maybe it's just really cheap to advertise on TV these days? Nobody's watching, three million viewers means a hit show now.

woke up this morning with 'Comfortably Numb' stuck in my head.
Odd, since I don't own a copy of 'The Wall' and haven't in over 20 years. I have the film on DVD but sure I have not watched it in over a decade.
Maybe the last time I heard the song was on Planet Rock months ago.
On top of that I seem to know all the lyrics and every note of the solos.

I should get a copy as I do like a lot if it, just the cod opera bit irritates me. I'll do you a swap for 'Argus' on vinyl.

Requested my medical history from my GP 2 months ago, arrived today, everything is there, but you know doctors handwriting, I can barely read a thing.
Still the blood test results are in type form, so that's interesting. Doctors were looking at reasons why my red blood cell count/haemaglobin was low, and I've always been that way, saw a blood test from 2001. Would have saved them and me a load of bother if they'd have just checked my medical history like wot I just done!!

What is the point of Post Offices? While I do feel sorry for all those postmasters who were wrongly convicted and jailed, I do think most of them should be sacked due to being next to useless.
If I call at a post office at 12.30 I find that they are closed between 12 and 1pm. If I call at one after 1pm I find this particular one closes between 1 and 2pm. Or as has happened today I get there at 12.05pm to be smugly told they close at 12 on Saturday and re-open on Monday :steam:
We can send letters through the air via email, it's only a matter of time before we can do the same with parcels. That'll wipe the smug grin of their faces.
Our post office used to be massive with about 20 windows. Them they moved to smaller place, then an even smaller one.
Then they divided the smaller one so it was even smaller. Then they closed for good.
Now I have to go to the one in the 'University Quarter' and queue round the block with the poxy students.
Worse still the bone idle 'dead slow and stop' bint who worked at our one transferred to that one so you can't even escape that.
I mean really you would need stop-motion photography to even see her moving.

The post office next to where I used to work was lined with hardboard sheets with holes drilled to attach hooks for hanging items for sale on, most of which were empty. Painted a fetching shade of green. It had two counters, one of which was permanently closed with a dog-eared piece of cardboard over it with the message 'position closed' written in felt tip.
There was no heating in there for the customers, but the postmaster had a year-round matching green pullover and gilet and a small two-bar electric fire pointed at him. The bastard. The whole place looked like a sixties Soviet supermarket in miniature.

The main post office in Chorley had many counters, and to keep the customers moving along Roger Moore would announce when a position became available ("Cashier number six"), emphasising the number. You could almost hear his single eyebrow raising as he said it.
That too is now closed.

Nowhere else in the world had Roger Moore post offices so of course they had to close them.
The idea these days is to make every experience as miserable as possible. Then complain you've got no customers because of Thatcher/Boris/Trump/Brexit/Ukraine/Free Market Economics/Jimmy Savile (you may perm any three).
The latest fad is to make it clear they are doing you a favour by selling you something. Only the customer is expected to say 'Thank You.'
Although there are exceptions still, the staff in the cafe where I get lunch are pretty good for being normal and friendly.

Hmm, I thought it might be that. I don't have the patience for puzzles, but it's cool enough to display.
I remember back in the 80s being impressed by my brother solving his Rubik's cube. Till I realised he'd peeled off the tiles and re-glued them. Then I was really impressed.
I also find puzzles tedious. Got enough real problems to solve without tackling additional pointless ones.
They want to do an 'Escape Room' thing at work as a team building exercise. Solving problems together.
Which is what we do anyway, day in day out...told them I would just show up for the curry afterwards. Don't think I will get away with that though.

Franky the 4 hour Fire Marshall training course I went on the other week is still traumatic. I mean part of my education was to learn to cope with impossible levels of boredom - you can be in that 40 minute Latin lesson all your life and we had 4 a week for 5 years. But in that fire thing - my god, I was climbing the walls. So I think I've done my bit already.

I would say so - the ability to climb walls in the event of a fire is something worth learning. Though really it shouldn't take four hours to learn not to point the fire extinguisher at your own face.
I was tempted to set fire to the place just so I could get out. In fact if someone had said to me you can carry on with this or I can burn you to death right now I'd have needed time to ponder the options.
It was beyond awful. I mean just sitting there being bored is one thing, and I was mentally prepared for that, but when I hear 'Now I'm going to divide you into teams' the full horror of what was ahead began to sink in.
Thankfully the cetification lasts 3 years as there is no way on god's green earth you would get me back into that again. You can shoot me, stab me, I don't care.
At my last place it was totally different - a bloke came out, gave the 'Fire is bad' speech, showed us a video of some pallets on fire, then we went in the yard, he set some fires and we put them out. An hour tops and putting out the fires was getting paid to have fun.

There is always one, and we had one. A giant of a man who worked in a warehouse and had a seemingly endless supply of dull anecdotes.
He was still going on ten minutes after the course finished (yes even though it was four hours with just one five minute break, it still over-ran).

Water is a total rip off I agree. Remember when it was a tenner a year and you just paid it along with the rates?
I'd impose stupidly expensive regulations on them, drive their share prices right down to pennies and then buy them back into public ownership.
Privatising them was the biggest con ever.

Compared to DHL and DPD etc they're absolute pants. Amazon are outstanding, I can order today, and it's here tomorrow. Mind you I still use the post office to send things, because I don't know how to use DHL etc for sending!!

you should never privatise essentials...ever.
..a bit like insurance for cars.. its essential and car ownership is essential to most and country but you see private firms now upping policies 10 fold for evs for no good, legit reason. thats because the govt doesnt have a basic policy that the companies have to beat.

That would be nice, but I can't see the govt getting stuck into that, too complicated. I mean, who out of the present shower could you trust with it?
I did read something about the insurance price hikes for evs, with some refusing to renew cover. They're blaming the uncertainty of repair costs. So why did they try to jack up my diesel van premiums by 30%?

I sold my old Pioneer cd player on Ebay for £50, the one with the big loading tray, that you play discs upside down. Sold a few records too, Scott 4 went for £63 in VG+ condition, it's gone up a bit since I bought it 10 yrs ago, about 100%. Most of the others I sold went for their min. bid of £10, which is fine. Everyone happy with my gradings and quick shipment. Anyway cd player buyer claims it wasn't reading discs, when its been working fine for about 5 years. I ask for a video and true enough it ain't reading em, can only assume it got thrown about by royal mail, I did pack it well. Anyways, i accept his return and buy an email label, then just as I pay see its got my old address on it (for returns), forgot to update my seller account, you'd think it would be the same as one's buyer account, but no. So contact ebay, they say ok tell the seller not to send it back, and Ebay will automatically cancel the label and won't charge me, and I'm like, oh shit I gotta sort out a new label now myself, with another courier, what a fucking drag. Then the Ebay guy goes, no worries, I see you've been an Ebay member for 17 years, and your feedback is excellent, and he just refunded the buyer for me, without the need to send it back, all on Ebay. I was well shocked, nice to see someone cares about loyal customers.

That catches me out. My Meridian takes discs the right way up and the Trichord, the 'wrong' way up :).
The whole thing always struck me as totally pointless, it makes no difference to anything whether the laser is mounted above or below the disc.
Just something for the marketing manager to put in the brochure to distinguish their players from a hundred others.
My Sony player needs the disc 'puck' to be fitted. It won't play otherwise. Plenty of other equally good players do not require the use of a puck - is it just a 'gimmick'?

You have the same one I used to have I think, XB930E ? Uses a fixed laser mechanism so that's why it needs the puck.
Great player, lovely build quality, don't know why I sold mine. Buyer got it for his daughter but tried it out first, said it gave nothing away to whatever high end mega money machine he was using.
Friend's daughter been offered 5 year recording contract with a major label. It would mean ditching her existing band and moving to L.A
Turned it down. Doesn't want to move to L.A, doesn't want to ditch the band.

Is this Keira Mac? Her loyalty to her bandmates is commendable, but these opportunities don't come along every day. If she accepts and makes a success of it, she may end up with sufficient clout to call the shots with her support players. And bring her mates back in (if they're up to snuff).
And five years isn't really that long.
In the end it's the things we don't do that we regret, that's what they say.

We have one of those extending poles which you then twist to lock. So easy. Mind you we haven't used the shower in maybe four or five years, might explain why we never get any visitors...
Actually it's baths every time for me. Last thing before I go to bed, I don't want to be bothered in the morningtime.
i got a fancy one fitted with new bathroom suite. its L-shaped and needs 2 full shower curtains; one from each end. works well and doubt itll fall down.
my last one was i guess similar to steves one

She only has the curtain there for show anyway, because we also have one of these.
https://m.media-amazon.com/images/I/41qed4r09QL._AC_SL1500_.jpg
All fixed now. Yes, it was an extendable 'twist to lock' type. Been up there for ages, but fell down under the added weight of some hand washing put up to dry. The curtain rail was not designed for the extra weight.
Mind you, she did offer to repair it by banging in a couple of nails! Even if she had used masonry nails the tiles would have cracked and a right old mess made.
I thought about it and made a repair which will now take some extra weight, yet no longer depends on compressing the spring-loaded ends of the rail. And all the modifications are neatly hidden, so you can't see what I have done.

ah, the old slap in a few 6 inch nails :D... no more nails wouldd have been better
'No more nails' is, I believe, an adhesive so the repair would have been irreversible. My repair is reversible.

I'm intrigued - our pole has been known to succumb to gravity on occasion.
Next time I might just replace it with one of these:

You could do gymnastics off that bugger, though it would definitely need bigger curtain rings :)

props might be overkill steve ... i had also te shower shelf version. went vertically.. both lasted well enough tbh. im using cubbys that are suction fixed.. quite good they are and no screws into the fancy walling
I'm intrigued
All I did was to drill a hole in each end cap to take a 4mm screw head. Then drilled, rawlplugged and fitted the screws in the corresponding positions on the wall. Offered up one end of the rail to the first screw, extended the rail to cover the second screw, twisted the rail so it butted firmly against the wall and rehung the curtain.
So the rail will now take a little more weight, allowing some light clothes to be hung up to dry if need be. And the repair means the rail will not fall if it looses its torsional twist. The repair cannot be seen as the screws are covered by the end cups.
my shower curtain rail is just a piece of steel pipe, cut to to the exact length of the room and jammed into place.
Works fine except in the winter of 2009/2010 it was so cold in the bathroom that the metal contracted sufficiently to cause the whole array to drop into the bath.
Made a hell of a racket.
Also my toothpaste was frozen solid in the tube.

Yes I've come across those, they look to work well, and you can position them to your ideal height for when showering.
We have no need for such things - when we have new bath fitted a few years ago it was positioned a few inches from the wall so I could run a shelf alongside it, then capped over with uPvc 'cappit' board sealed in. It's actually a lot better than it sounds, and easy to wipe clean.
Thanks! It didn't take too long to think of a solution, but it did take a good while to effect, as there was a lot of coming and going to find the right tools for the job.

If Happy's anything like Anita, the 'right place' for any particular tool is whatever box, drawer or cupboard it will fit into, so I've no chance
Fortunately I keep all of my work tools (and there are a lot) in my van, and there is a place for everything, everything in it's place. Folk think I keep the van pretty organised, but really it's just that if something doesn't go back to its usual place I've a devil of a job locating it!

And using a free streaming service to 'try before you buy' will save potentially expensive unwise buys.
Got a used copy of this from a record shop in Bury this afternoon. Only a tenner. I'll find out what it sounds like tomorrow, but it looks tidy enough.

On the contrary, I've gotten rid of even more, quite enjoying it. Most of the leavers are records that don't have much melody, you know 'experimental' type music, including Kraftwerk. Tend to listen to alot of stuff on the ECM label nowadays. Whittled my Bowie collection from about 7 lps to 3, just don't wanna listen to 'Starman' anymore, too old for it. On the other hand I couldn't part with 'Hunky Dory' because of the incredibly uplifting 'Queen bitch', lol. Basically operating on the premise that life is short, and we all have to bye eventually, so might aswell start getting used to it. emmmm.

Bit of good karma here.
After undergoing major surgery, our next door neighbour needed complete rest, so for 3 weeks Anita doubled up on our evening meals, and provided them a 'meals on legs' service, as the neighbour's hubby wasn't much cop in the kitchen.
Anyway, the enjoyed Anita's air-fried chips which made up some of the meals so much that she decided to buy them an air fryer for Christmas.
Anyway, while sorting through assorted receipts/gift tokens yesterday (she throws nothing away), she found a forgotten Argos credit note dating from last December for £65. Feels like free money, like putting on a coat you haven't worn for a while and finding a tenner in one of the pockets, but more so :)
So, at what feels like no cost, Anita has become the best neighbour they could ever hope for (their words). Makes me feel warm and fuzzy :)

Is it just me, or is the rush hour starting earlier and earlier each year?
When I was working the hours were 08:30 to 17:00, yet I notice that traffic gets busy from about 15:30.
Has anyone else noted the same?

a lot of places now work different hrs which helps to spread the jams over a longer period; supposedly making the jams, less... not sure it works all that well
If work finishes earlier, then it must start earlier - unless the hours of work are shortened. Assuming a typical 8 hour working day, with an hour lunch break, then to finish at 15:30, the working day would have to start at 06:30.

well there is a lot of working from home now too. yes some starting early too. a sort of flattening the curve. I don't get out until gone 1730 so the worst of it is over by then.
Round here there's usually a shedload of traffic all day. Seems a lot of people don't work but still have money for cars and to drive about in them all day.

No it's not just you Barry, I've noticed it over recent years. Increasing numbers of cars on the roads, combined with falling driving standards and (largely) piss poor public transport means that many set off earlier to (a) avoid the worst of it, and (b) compensate for the inevitable longer journey times.
But since I "semi retired" at the beginning of the year, I'm in the happy position of being able to set off a bit later in the mornings and finish earlier in the afternoon, thereby avoiding the rush hours... I bet you can smell the smugness coming off me :)

Exactly. It’s the school run. In contrast, around here, the working afternoon rush starts around 3pm and continues until 7pm. Lunchtime on Fridays, though.

Same here. And for some reason, drivers are more inconsiderate and aggressive Friday afternoons
Mums and dads claim that their school runs are justified because increased traffic makes the roads unsafe for little Fabian to be walking to school. Conveniently overlooking the fact that they themselves are a huge contributor to the traffic chaos. I used to love it during school holidays, you could really tell the difference.
And these kids will be growing up with next to no road sense. Maybe the BBC's "public information films" should make a return. But make 'em rated 18, scare the living shit out of them.
Most kids seem to live in a virtual world possibly from hours of playing computer games where if you get annihilated you just jump up with a new body and carry on. No road sense whatsoever especially on a bicycle.
In so far as driving standards go it makes me wonder if those who learn now or in the years since the cost of lessons have soared limit the amount of lessons to suit their pocket giving them much less time on the road. They may have enough skill to pass a test but driving well is so much more than that.
We recently saw a P plate driver stuck at a roundabout as they were clearly struggling with using it!

Ah yes the school run - don't you just love it! There is a secondary school on the edge of the village and twice a weekday the roads near the school are clogged with cars parked half on the pavement, and in a queue sometimes 50m long, leading up to a road junction. This means if you are driving past these parked cars towards the junction and a car turns left off the main road, you have to reverse all the way back as the car turning in has right of way. It's a real pain in the arse.

laws were passed up here to give councils right to stop this pavement parking and over dropped kerbs etc.

I seem to recall that it was sheep carcases processed into cattle feed that caused it. The sheep had Scrapie, a prion disease. The prions are a protein that fool the host into replicating it I believe and this transferred into cattle. Prions are not a virus or bacteria, they are not an organism.
Just the gist of what I remember, I didn't Google anything.

A varied diet used to be the preserve of the rich until not that long ago. Still is in a lot of places.

yup it was misfolded prions. probably from meat and bone meal from cows or sheep i remember. humans could catch creuzfeldt jacob, the human version of 'mad cow disease'. i remember many butcher products being banned like beef on the bone and maybe blood pudding too.. i think you had to have a certain gene susc eptability too to catch it. it was a fairly scary thought at time, which needless to say produced a lot of jokes.. cooking didnt kill it either, or render it harmless. dont think you could kill it as it wasnt technically a living source like bacteria etc

That's interesting as years ago I read a book about how life started and one of the definitions of what made something alive was the ability to replicate. I can't remember what else there was that presumably a prion wouldn't meet. I seem to recall something about mutation but that doesn't feel right, as if all our genes stopped mutating and our children were exact clones of us, it would be a bit off to tell them they're not alive.
I wonder what a prion based lifeform would look like. I'm surprised Kirk didn't encounter one in Star Trek.

Of course he can - it's called abdication. The last monarch to abdicate was Edward VIII so he could marry Mrs Simpson. George VI took his place.
However the royal family were so traumatised by the event they are unlikely to repeat it.

Between what - a monarchy and a republic? There is a big difference, but some republican presidents get the constitution changed so that they can remain in office for a long time, if not for a lifetime.

Strange to find myself agreeing with a Tory. Robert Jenrick saying there are "too many migrants to integrate into society". That's been obvious for an awful lot of years, as evidenced by the 'ghetto-ising' of regions to the point of creating no-go areas for anybody who doesn't fit in.

Has anyone been watching the special Dr Who stories to celebrate 60 years since the first broadcast?
The last two, featuring David Tennant and Catherine Tate, have been remarkably philosophical and introspective. At times it seems as if Russell T Davies is being deliberately obtuse in order to explain the 'new rules', so that the Doctor can 'regenerate' more than the formerly allowed twelve times.
Now he has introduce the concept of "bi-generation", where there can be two Doctors at the same time - and conveniently two TARDIS police boxes. (Isn't it about time the TARDIS fixed its disguise mechanism?)
No. It's always been a hit and miss show for me. The only good writer it ever had was Terry Nation.
Tennant was a good Doctor let down by poor scripts but once he left and it started getting woke that was the end for me.
