+1... Major spew. Some of the shite (internal organs, gristle, etc), which goes into those beggars belief!

Give me a nice steak pie, any day, preferably with shortcrust pasty, gravy and some creamy mashed potato :yesbruv:

What about Scotch eggs?

Not big on those either, as they tend to be rather stodgy. I've experienced exceptions to that rule though, in some good pubs, where the Scotch eggs were homemade, light, and had a lovely runny yolk inside :)

Yes. I like those.

It's all the chewy bits of gristle and fat that put me off pork pies. Not to mention the suspicious looking 'jelly'.

No "chewy bits of gristle and fat", nor "suspicious looking jelly" in the pork pies I eat.

Scotch eggs with runny yolks, now that does sound off-putting!

because a proper made pie...has only the best cuts of meat in it.....supermarket bought shite is full of gristle, veins, connective tissue and any other ingredient that will bulk out the content that isn't lean meat...a proper pork pie is delicious..as is a proper steak pie...or mince pie...made by someone who is honest....

Some must like them. There are plenty on sale. Glad I don't eat them

The nearest I get is a chicken pie. Had a Tesco roast chicken pie this week. Wasn't bad at all, proper short pastry, plenty of decent chicken pieces and a gravy that actually tasted like gravy. Yes, I know there'll be shortcuts in the recipe, but I wasn't disappointed.

Exactly - and we are in full agreement, which is why I only ever eat homemade steak (or game) pies, or those from our local butcher, so I know what's gone into them. I simply don't do offal, or eat fatty crap. I'm also similarly fussy with sausages, which often the same applies to (such as you've described above).

However, I'm not terribly keen on even the best pork pies (I've had some good ones from Melton Mowbray, for example), as they tend to be a little stodgy, and I'm not big on eating cold pies. I like pies served warm, with a nice rich gravy.

Barry, Scotch eggs with runny centres and a crispy shell are fab (and indeed how the best ones should be served). See here, which is how I've had them at the pubs in question: https://www.nerdswithknives.com/scotch-eggs-runny-yolk/

Read how they *should* be made, and often how they're not!

Couple of times in the years where I live the power for the neighbourhood went down for a few hours. What struck me was the awesome beautiful silence due to the electrical hash and all the electrical stuff like fridge compressors etc not being on. Wonderful lack of noise - surprising what we put up with all the time without realising.

power company have e-mailed me to say my account is £1600 and change in credit but they don't want to refund me as I might use all the credit up over the winter months. But that still might not be enough so just to be on the safe side they are increasing my Direct Debit amount from £65 to £98 a month.

Their own data for my usage, which you can view on their site, shows I never exceed an actual spend of more than £40/ month.

I get £100 a year discount for paying by DD. I use so little it isn't worth shopping around. I am surprised that I am so much in credit though. But they hadn't read the meter in almost 3 years and I was in credit the last time too.

The discount applied is a good reason to pay by DD, *but* you need to monitor how much you're paying, based on your usage, to ensure that YOU are getting the benefit of paying bills that way, not your supplier, who otherwise will simply take advantage of any overpaid funds, in the way you have described.

Why do you think they offer that discount in the first place? Because they know that plenty of folks like you will be sucked in, and end up overpaying, and so they can redistribute those funds and/or gain interest from them, sitting in their bank account, which probably amounts to many MILLIONS of pounds of extra profit! ;)

What you should do is access your electricity/gas account on-line, via the website of your supplier, monitoring the balance on your account regularly, and as soon as a significant amount of credit has been generated (way less than £1600), ask them to refund you that amount - or even better take regular meter readings yourself, and enter those details into your account, before your bills have been generated, thereby ensuring that you're not continually overpaying.

And of course, as I've already said, if you had a smart meter you'd know *exactly* how much electricity/gas you were using at any given time, and so would always be in full control of your spending, but we won't go there! ;)

Lastly, I'd be insisting that your supplier refunded the £1600 over-payment (or a large chunk of it) immediately, as it's YOUR money, not theirs. Quite simply, there is no logical reason on their part for holding onto those funds, if your historical usage at this time of year, or any other, indicates that you're extremely unlikely to use that much energy.

You should always be "arsed" to take full control of any aspect of your spending, as it pays to do so, and unfortunately your lackadaisical approach to things is the reason that you're in this position. If you adopt a more proactive one instead in future, then what you're experiencing now won't happen :)

Mine needs doing but I have a bottle of that drain unblocker. Two liquids that mix as you pour it, dissolves the organic waste. Easier than pissing about with the u bend and getting black crap all over you. Done that in the past, now I'd rather spend the fiver. Whatever, it is quite satisfying when it has worked and the water runs straight down the plughole again. Little victories.

Welcome to the world of the sink plughole strainer; simply select your 'weapon' of choice, from the selection here, and fit it: https://www.google.co.uk/search?q=sink+plughole+strainer&ie=utf-8&oe=utf-8&client=firefox-b&gfe_rd=cr&dcr=0&ei=xV9HWuq8GtHc8Ael1p64Ag

We use one of these chaps: https://tapstore.com/basket-strainer-waste.html?utm_source=google&utm_medium=GoogleShopping&utm_campaign=googlebase&gclid=EAIaIQobChMIgNv4qLmx2AIViZEbCh2lYQlJEAQYAyAB EgK_vPD_BwE The top section is removable, which catches any large pieces of food waste, and which you subsequently tip out and empty into the bin, allowing only liquid and the very smallest particles of waste through.

Nothing goes down our sink plug hole that's bigger than a bread crumb! Problem solved *at source*, and no more blocked sinks - happy days

I know all about sink plug hole strainers and use them myself. The blockage occurred at my fiancé's place and was caused, not by food, but by 'fluff' accumulating in the waste water outlet from the washing machine where it joins the U bend.

No mention of outlets from washing machines or "fluff" there, hence my presumption that the blockage was caused by food wastage (said "sludge") coming from the sink ;)

Marco.

The U bend in question is a three-way coupling, connecting both the kitchen sink plug hole and the washing machine water outlet to the drain. The 'sludge' that had accumulated was affecting both the kitchen sink and the washing machine, but since a filter sieve is used with the sink, I can only assume the blockage was caused by detritus not being properly flushed away from the washing machine. Obviously I was not particularly interested in analysing the exact nature of the sludge at the time, and only considered the matter later. ;)

Whatever the shortcomings of the plumbing arrangement used, it is a straightforward, if not especially pleasant, matter to sort out the problem when it arises - which, fortunately, is infrequent.

Marco
31-12-2017, 16:48
Lol.... Indeed. Our washing machine is located in an out house, not in the kitchen, and therefore not part of the same 'plumbing network' as the sink. We've never had any blocked pipes, perhaps partly because of that, but mainly because we don't flush anything down the sink (or toilet) that's liable to cause a blockage.

And for that reason, we've never needed to use caustic soda, or any other chemicals, to address said issue.

However it does appear that your (or Happy's ?) washing machine is not doing its job properly, perhaps because the 'fluff filter' incorporated is blocked/needs replaced, as what's happening, however infrequently it may be, shouldn't be happening.

I've reached a point with my hifi where I'm very happy with the way it performs, the vinyl section is hardly the last word in sophistication and the digital stuff is fairly basic. The amp does the job nicely and I'm really happy with the speakers. Others might well pick holes it, and that's fine, that's what makes it interesting. So I should be happy right?.......wrong!!!. Just when I'm happy to leave it alone for a while one of the rather rare MS Signifer bass drivers started to play up, slight distortion but very evident during quiet parts in music. I've tried to old trick of moving the cone slightly beyond it's normal amount of travel to release any debris that might have gotten into the coil and fingers crossed it seems to have worked. The trouble is I'm now paranoid about something failing altogether and not being able to repair or replace it due to the relative rarity of the Signifers. Perhaps we hifi lovers as a breed are destined to always be seeking that next ' perfect ' piece of kit. :hmm:

walpurgis
14-01-2018, 23:20
It's more likely that you've corrected a bit of cone sag than cleared debris from the coil gap. Try rotating the drivers 180 degrees to compensate.

Anyway, shouldn't this be in 'Blank Canvas'? :D

Yep - that's what I use: a tungsten carbide scriber and a pair of tile pliers. For more intricate tile fitting, I might use a tile drill and a circular cross section 'rasp' hacksaw blade; but it's laborious and not always successful.

If you want workmen who'll perform jobs to an acceptable standard, you have to know where to look. If you're after, say, a landscape gardener, the small ads in the back pages of Hustler magazine is not the place to look. They only do "lady gardens" anyway.

I don't know. I'm the sort who will always get someone in. I already have a job and that pays for someone else to do a job I can't or won't do. 'The Economy' in action. But I have had a few tradesmen thanks me for not looking over their shoulder while they are doing the work. I mean why would you? You have hired them to do the job, you have already committed. Only worry about it if it goes wrong. If you picked your man right, it almost certainly won't.

I have had a few tradesmen thanks me for not looking over their shoulder while they are doing the work. I mean why would you?

Because although some are OK, some are not. I've seen and put right some right old bodges. I don't make a point of keeping a close eye on folk who do work for me, but I do check what's done.

After many years of overseeing work done by contractors serving local authorities. I know how standards vary.

Macca

When I called some customers pain in the arse, it was rather a sweeping statement. I did mean the watchers, who look over your shoulder and generally get under your feet. I always work to a good standard, and if a job is beyond my abilities, I don't 'wing it', but recommend someone else. By being 'the man who can, or know someone who can', I do ok for work, mostly repeat customers or recommendations.

Gaining someone's trust has always been a priority. It doesn't matter whether you're able to do the job, if you can't be trusted, you're no use to anyone.

Yep its scary how my good intentions go out of the window. I try not to go to the 11pm shop but there was nothing in.

All that salt and sugar mix in one go is pretty dangerous. I wont pay over £1 for a big bag of crisps but they keep having clearance offers :) Plus you need a second mortgage to buy anything that looks healthy in there or thats my excuse.

I do try and avoid certain products and then it all goes to pot when Im in a gaming snack mood. I must discipline myself and I know what I must do.

I generally don't snack. It just doesn't normally occur to me to have one. I don't eat breakfast. I have lunch at around 2pm, usually a roll or sandwich followed by fruit and later on a meal after 6pm and that's it. Once in a blue moon I'll eat something at other times.

My PC has been playing up for some time so I decided the time had come to sort it out. I had a dig around in various files and other techie stuff, not very PC minded, and thought sod it!, I don't know whats what so with a bit of shopping around I've bought a perfectly usable PC, good enough for my purposes and much faster than the old one for £75. It's amazing to think that two years ago this machine was more than five times as much, just shows you how quickly things move on. I come from the generation where you tried to fix things but with all the built in obsolescence and non user serviceable stuff I find it very sad how much we just throw away.

I've been through the anti virus and clean up software with nothing found. I think it's so bunged up with stuff that it gets tied up in knots, trouble is I'm not sure what's what. Now I've got the other one I'll wipe the HDD and reinstall Windows, handy to have a spare when you rely on it so much.

I did a nuclear fart on New Year's day, which came with some "fallout". I had to run to the bog to limit the collateral damage. When I showed the skiddy duds to Mrs. Pony to ask what I should do with them, she wasn't impressed, but she let that one "slide" as it was my birthday :)

But if I plump for the ones with elasticated waist that don't fall off while I'm crawling around, it could get quite pricey. And the missus won't entertain the idea of me having towelling nappies soaking in a bucket. It's all her fault anyway, trying to make me "eat healthy". Never had a problem when I was on my pizza butties diet.

Every Monday the missus goes to Slimming World. They meet to discuss recipes, talk about their progress and get weighed. I call these meetings "going to the weighbridge". She hasn't twigged yet and has called it weighbridge herself a couple of times. I'm gonna be in so much trouble when she eventually repeats it to someone else

I'm doing a bit of tiling in the kitchen and noticed that where I'd tiled previously, I'd cut slim, half inch edge fillets for small gaps. But I'm blowed If I can remember how I cut these. I've never owned a disc tile cutter, so I must have used another method. Maybe scoring and using a vice? Dunno, they're well cut though. Maybe I'm losing the plot? :D

I think I can replicate these cuts with my Dremel type tool and a small diamond disc.
