Strange to find myself agreeing with a Tory. Robert Jenrick saying there are "too many migrants to integrate into society". That's been obvious for an awful lot of years, as evidenced by the 'ghetto-ising' of regions to the point of creating no-go areas for anybody who doesn't fit in.
I know right. It's ok letting in a few immigrants, but when it comes to the point that they begin to turn into a sizable minority with a birth rate which far out strips native Brits, then its time to use some foresight. The thing with Brexit is that European migrants integrate far better than Asian or African/Caribbean migrants do, so it's a bit of loss there. I should know because my last girlfriend was a lovely Spanish lass, I mean, when's the last time you went to a pub and chatted up a bird in a burqa?

Where my partner lives in London could not be more cosmopolitan. Yet I do not feel threatened, intimidated or in any a stranger there.
Last week, for example, I eat in Turkish restaurant one day, eat pizza in an Italian one, the next, had coffee in a Jewish cafe, and eat in a Burmese restaurant on another day. The nearest off-licence is run by an Indian, and we buy charcuterie from the local Polish delicatessen.
Women in hijabs or, occasionally, burkas mix with others wearing mini-skirts and braids without conflict.
Were it not for the high cost of living in London, I could quite happily live there.

Sadly that's not the case where I live. A number of cafes have been taken over and places where you used to be able to pop in for a coffee and a cake are now full of only men with beards, and lots of them now sit on the tables outside smoking. Some of them have blacked out their windows and there are stories on social media from those working in the area of cars stopping outside blocking the roads and men and women popping in the cafes quickly to hand over envelopes.
I get a newsletter from the local police. There have been about 10 muggings in the afternoon in recent weeks.
Women no longer feel comfortable meeting up with their friends for a coffee and chat. I don't like taking the children to the area any more either.
Such a shame as 5 years ago it was a nice family area.
when I moved in this street 25 years ago it was 100 percent white English. Now I think we have someone from half the countries in the world. Poland, Rumania, South Africa, India, Pakistan, Turkey, Kurdistan, even French Caribbean.
I helped the South African bloke across the street to buy a car, he'd only been here a fortnight and didn't have a clue what he was doing.
I walk down to the shop and back and quite often don't hear anyone speaking in English, which is a bit weird. Can't say it bothers me but then not a lot does.
There's a Rumanian supermarket end of the street, thought I'd give it a go. But I can't read Rumanian and the pictures on the packaging are no help. Didn't know if I was looking at soup or washing powder.
Anyway there's never any bother, if anything it was a much rougher area back when it was all white British.

It's quite apparent that European leaders have been ignoring their indigenous populaces feelings about immigration for too long, the rise of far right parties across Europe is testament to that, I suppose when we vote with our feet, they may start to listen, Until then its more of this Rwanda panto. The crazy thing about Brexit is that the shortfall from European immigration is made up by Asian/Black immigration, the exact opposite of what many voted for. And as I said earlier, I would much rather share my country with Europeans than people whose culture is very different, even alien to ours, it just makes no sense. It wouldn't surprise me if there was a caliphate stretching from Pakistan to Ireland by the year 2100.

Is it true what I heard, that the money that was going to go on HS2 will now be spent fixing all the potholes? Not seen any sign of it round here, just a lot of 'pop up' road works with the attendant maifunctioning temporary lights, making every journey like a giant version of whack-a-mole.
With all the rainfall we've had, and the flooding, I might consider flogging the van and getting a boat instead. Or for best of both worlds, a hovercraft. 7am every morning, neighbours will love that, though I bet you can get electric ones.

Many years ago I taught science in a secondary school in a pretty dodgy area. After a lesson on heat transfer one of the lads asked whether holding a dustbin
lid over his head would stop police helicopter thermal imaging from being able to “see” him.
I was pleased that he was trying to apply some Science to his everyday life (I did tell him that the dustbin lid would make him stand out a bit though :doh:)

It probably ran out of petrol. Those buggers cost about a thousand quid an hour to put in the air to chase after scrotes arseing round in uninsured 'pool cars'. And at the end of it all the above mentioned scrotes are arrested then get kicked to the kerb due to lack of evidence.
Pointless waste of police money.
They could just use drones, much cheaper, but then they wouldn't be able to give their mates rides at the weekends.
start sending them to africa too.. probably worse than the ones trying to get in.

Almost all had their trunks covered in ivy, a sure sign that death is near. I'm sure trees used to last longer than that.

Is that right about the ivy? I don't think ivy harms trees.
Probably the trees are dying due to some sort of disease that affects that variety, whatever it is.

No I don't think the ivy is actually harming them, it's more a symptom of some malaise, rather than a cause. I might have heard it wrong, I'll do some research.

Next door's large apple tree was inundated by ivy, the extra weight made the apple tree's trunk snap and it ended up leaning over my wall. Two years on, both tree and ivy seem to be surviving and annoying me. I'll chop it all back when things warm up, there'll be loads to hack off.

I think they are all planted too close together, for maximum density as soon as possible. And as you say, competing for scant resources.
Where I grew up there were woods made up of huge beech, oak and sycamore trees. I had at some point climbed all of them, even knocking in 6" nails when the lowest branches were out of reach. Makes me cringe to think what would have happened if I'd slipped off one of those nails...
Then a few years later all those trees were felled and new trees planted. What were they thinking? Now forty years on and most of those trees look sick and many have fallen over.
looking at aerial photos of my area from the 1930s through to the 1960s and there's no trees or undergrowth at all where now there are dense concentrations of both.
Big churchyard and adjoining graveyard just down the road - both full of large mature trees - 50 years ago there was nothing in either.
Back when I first moved here they planted three saplings on a wide stretch of pavement. They were little trees for years, not sure when they became the big trees they are now but it seemed to happen almost overnight.
In the street next to mine there's a massive tree growing out of the rubble of a demolished building, must be 60 foot tall. Not there in the '60s either.

Like a watched kettle never boiling, trees do bugger all while you're looking at them. Maybe they just grow at night. The part of Preston where I lved in the 70s were all demolished in about '81, and the area landscaped with new planted trees. They're all 40 footers now, and healthy. But they were planted pretty far apart, I think that is key to their success.

Started with a hacking cough and a feeling that someone had installed a house brick behind my eyes, followed by aching joints and hypersensitive skin, constant sneezing, then as a parting gift two days of doing poos that looked like oxtail soup.

ANyway, xmas is shit cos its raining and everythings fucking closed!!! Can't wait till boxing day, no rain, so me and doggo can actually fucking go somewhere. Listening to psychedelia now and getting pissed, so happy winter festival.

Oh no there is definitely a Santa Claus - since being appointed head of logistics at Amazon HQ he has become pretty much desk-bound, and having his elves dressed as delivery drivers he has become more elusive than ever.

Turned out ok, IN THE END! When it stopped raining I cheered up, local cafe was actually open, lovely staff in there, read for 2 hours, a most riveting book - 'A line in the sand', on the Sykes-Picot agreement, very topical. Enjoying some Beaujolais with ham and cheese now, so not bad! Roast beef to come, not sure what that will be like, the horseradish sauce I attempted is naff! Merry shitmas and a crappy new year!
I admire your attempt to make horseradish sauce. The root is very tough to grate, but I'm sure if you persevere fresh horseradish sauce is much better than that out of a jar. It's the same with mustard - freshly made mustard always tastes better. :)

It had a nasty bitter taste, next time I won't bother with the poncy Michel Roux version, waste of time!! On the plus side the gravy was very nice.

Can't complain as I bought it used for £70 twenty years ago and that included delivery, so I think I've had my money's worth.

i got a german one recently, but wasnt cheap. ive one of those tabletops upstaqirs. now my water fridge but i got it as a beer fridge.. in fact i got it for nowt second hand and its worked non stop for about 15 yrs. if you stayed local i could give you a tabletop for free

okay - problem solved, I turned the temp on it to max coldness and it has now kicked in so it's not broken after all.

Annual energy cost - £18.33 so thats also worth considering. but downside was it was nearly 300 notes. still, it will almost certainly be my last one. they are made in same factory as meile apparently

Scientists are saying that last year was the hottest for 125,000 years. How could they possibly know that? :scratch: It was reported on Sky news this morning, where some bloke was disputing this, while this skinny bird with short hair and no make up (probably knits her own muesli too) was outraged at his arrogance and ignorance of what she was calling the world's powers' "genocide". It was actually quite fun to watch :)
I can't understand how they age rocks; claiming they are tens of millions of years old. :scratch:

Doing a bit of research, it seems there are other geological phenomena which complicate matters, such as rocks undergoing change from igneous to metamorphic state and this has to corrected for, but on the whole what you say is correct.
As of today I am officially an old age pensioner, and boy am I feeling it. I had two pints last night and that was enough. One more record to play then I'll spend the rest of the afternoon binge-watching Cash in the Attic and checking out the funeral plan adverts.
Your post spurred me on to check my pension status (I will “qualify” during February this year).
As I retired early from full time work I need to make “voluntary contributions” in order to maximise my pension - so I will need to live another two and a half years in order to recoup my voluntary contribution, after that I will be making money :cool:

Well that was a shit day.
Driving to Preston this morning, the van packed up on the M6 exit slip road, which turned out to be a split fuel line pissing diesel onto the road, all of the engine bay, everywhere but where it was supposed to go. Time was 9.30am.
Called AA, who said the van was in a hazardous location on chevrons which to my eyes looked like a reasonable quasi-hard shoulder, and so they were going to call the police out to arrange moving the van to a safer place.
An hour later a Highways Agency SUV arrived, and they informed me that because of its dangerous location, and the fact that it was still on the M6 (just), it should be recovered and taken somewhere safer before the AA will touch it. At a cost of about £300 :eek: But... they offered to shove my van a further 40 metres to get it past the 'End of motorway' sign, which they did... Very nice people :)
So then I had to get it recovered onto an AA-appointed low loader and moved somewhere more AA-friendly. He arrived at 1.30pm. Then I had to wait another 90 minutes for the AA, who to be fair fixed it in 20 minutes.
So apart from a couple of treks across two busy carriageways for a brew at Subway I spent much of 9.30 till 3.30pm out in the pissing rain, and wondering how much I'd get if I sold this crappy van that clearly hates me.

Could have been worse though - all it cost me was a few miles of diesel, 2 cappuccinos and 2 hot chocolates. And it cost me nothing work-wise, it just moved my job back a day, I'll finish it Friday instead of Thursday. I was going to do bog all Fri anyway :)

Giving up work tends to coincide with age related ailments and aches and pains setting in :).
(I still seem to injure myself regularly without having a job, but I am a bit like a bull in a china shop)
its a double edged sword sadly. the more you do at this age the more you will have accidents and further damage arthritis, but to just stop can cause serious issues too.
i'd say give it up for a couple of months and you'll either love it or be desparate to get back in saddle (and away from wife lol).
im betting on the latter

One of these has appeared at my local petrol station - maybe it's just me, but I'm finding the way the world works increasingly difficult to navigate. I suppose companies use this sort of thing to keep costs down by not having to pay wages to an actual human, I just don't trust this kind of thing. brown here is garden waste. dark grey is general waste. cos im disabled the guys come and get it and put it back. i always tip them at xmas/n year
Our council provides large plastic bags for recycling the plastic. It gets collected every fortnight.
We also have separate sacks for paper and for cardboard, as well as a brown bin for garden waste and a black bin for general waste.

our incinerator here is going 24/7. Some years ago it was featured in The Guardian as one of the most polluting things in Europe.
They repainted the chimney in bright colours and so now it's okay.

At work we had separate waste bins. One for paper and another for plastic etc. They were separately emptied into
a large two compartment bin on wheels. But outside the office, this compartmentalised bin was emptied into one skip! :doh:
we do collect it separarely and we do have the ability to sell and process, but if too many twonks put stuff in wrong buckets it ends up too difficult to process so its dumped. we make our own compost from the garden waste and sell it, although public used to get a couple of bags free.

But the plastic and cardboard goes into separate holes in the ground, so at least they're trying.
I like to think the cardboard (and brown paper) is recycled to make new cardboard (thanks to Amazon, there is a UK shortage), and the plastic is also recycled. Each are collected by separate teams and vehicles.

The van was recovered Monday, and we've just heard back - there was no fuel in it (though I'd put 50 quids worth in Saturday morning), while the gauge was showing half full). So they took off the fuel tank to reset something. Also the fuel pump had "melted" and had to be replaced. Hopefully I'll understand it all better tomorrow when I collect it.
Total cost including recovery is £220, which is a lot less than I was expecting. Hopefully that's it all sorted now, but it'll be a while before I can trust taking it beyond anywhere local.
could have been worse I suppose.

Hmm. My daughter belatedly informs me that the flat roof loft conversion at our place in Kent has had torn and flapping exterior felt over the winter! Lord knows what damage the wet may have done, good job I'm moving there shortly, sounds like I'm going to be busy. I have visions of scaffolding and loads of work to do in the summer. I'm getting a bit old for all that, but I'll have a bash :).

If the problem goes down to the timbers, EPDM rubber roofs are fairly straightforward. You can buy kits through Ebay to suit all sizes and applications. I did my garage roof with it a few years ago, looks good and has a lifespan of 50 years or so.

I used them on my garage roof, as the clown who did the original roof used chipboard. The leaking roof turned the chipboard into weetabix, and went unnoticed until it collapsed :doh: fortunately missing the bikes.

first time for many years steve. of course nowadays im stuck in without it as a need a very special set of requirements in the car to get in and out. sadly there are very few non big suvs i can get into. the kona is one. passenger side is very difficult or not on, depends. hip just doesnt bend enough etc far less my head and neck...

not getting car back today... they are a little vague as to what issue is but something is wrong and they dont know what i guess. i had feeling it wasnt sensors but the reciever... also saying the horn isnt working, which may be the case as i dont think ive ever pressed it.. without a horn i guess it might not be legal, i dunno. so if i need to go do summat, i cant, but if its gonna be much longer than the one day i might have to see about a complimentary from motability.

Since 'semi' retiring I'm finding it difficult to keep track of what day it is, and it's really doing my head in. I've gone all day thinking today is Saturday, and I can't shake it. Any suggestions from fellow retirees, or should I just get used to folk thinking I'm losing my marbles :scratch:

I'm fully retired, and whilst I know what day it is, I don't necessarily know the date.
Having a diary is essential for me to keep appointments.
I don't like to be rigid in what I do each day of the week; especially as my partner and I move around a lot, either in this country or abroad. Keeps me on my toes!

I always used to have a work diary (which was also used for other entries) but I didn't stick with it after retiring. I reckon I could get one for this year for next to nothing now :)
Also I could probably do with a pastime that occupies set days of the week, at least until I can get used to not having to be up and out at set times for work. A bit of structure for weekdays might be what I need. Ofc weekends are another matter!
Lack of structure in the day was one of the things I struggled with. Also I couldn't get anything done as I was thinking I'm retired so there's no motivation to do it right away. It's all so open-ended.
That's why I didn't even last three months.
I've plenty to do during the day: play records; play CDs; read books (often have two on the go!); cut the grass; wash the car; do the cross word, and failing that cooking and choosing the wine. :D

Yes - books, music, TV, that's what I did. I spent 5 years as poxy student and had no problem just doing that stuff then, so not sure what changed.
got rid of another carload of cardboard and suchlike from spare room. used my car and daughter did the work. hers is all tidy etc as she is selling it

I am going to have a radical clear out of stuff that I am never likely to use in my current system, but have the "will I find I need it when it is gone"? man sitting on my shoulder taking the piss. I have some nice speakers but they would need to be collected as I don't have any boxes and some are a hernia weight. I have 3 Sony PS1s that I got following the "these are a great CD player if you do all the mods" threads on Diyaudio and other sites sitting doing nothing and many amplifiers that sound great but don't have the required credentials to see an easy sale. Thank you fellas, yes for health reasons, both physical and mental. I actually drank last night, but went one month without it, which for me is incredible. I now plan to go another month without it.
Got another sharpening stone in. An ex fine this time which is extremely smooth and will really bring up the final edge nicely. Not cheap these but they work very well for so little effort.

its an arm part of a sharpener system. there are different heads in the arm and 3 different arms in that one. i use the horl mostly as most of my knives are fairly sharp andts quick to just top them up. nowt worse than a blunt knife when cooking.

It's a sartorial affectation that is popular at the moment. A decade or so previously it was a fashion to sport a single small pigtail at the top of the head.
A current fashion that I do dislike are facial tatoos, and facial piercings: the latter I find so repellent that I can't look at anyone who has them fully in the face.

A week of mixed fortunes so far...
The first three days of this week might just be the toughest ever for me. Monday saw my phone recording 14,000 steps, half of it pushing a 20kg barrow, the other half with 60kg of old sodden turf on board, filling an 8 yard skip. Then it was cutting a 15 metre trench for drainage, followed by shovelling twelve assorted tons of sand, gravel and soil. I am now aching in places where I didn't know I had places.
But then yesterday I spent an interesting few minutes watching a female sparrowhawk trying her best to get at a sparrow in a bush, while paying no heed to me (it was less than 3 metres away). She was unsuccessful, but it was great entertainment for me. Then the customer's neighbour, who was having a garage clearout gave me a nearly-new Ryobi sander. Maybe because I was making a fuss of her dog.
I tell anyone who'll listen that I'm retiring, but I don't think I can. I'll enjoy a long weekend of chilling, but I just know that by Tuesday I'll be climbing the walls.

Oh, to be young again.
After almost a year, Anita's lad has parted company with his girlfriend. It's taken him almost a year to finally accept that he's allergic to screaming skulls and that she is a SCREAMING SKULL capital letters.
The signs were there from the start, already having three kids by two different dads. And now that she is pregnant again, it's four for three. There's a common denominator there. And to add to the fun, two of the kids have ADHD. Call me cynical and unsympathetic, but when I was at school the correct term was 'little shits'. Now I don't doubt the condition exists, but I suspect it is over-diagnosed, and used to excuse crappy behaviour.
When a teacher phoned yesterday to report the oldest one's violent and unpredictable behaviour, the mother let forth a barrage of abuse with a good dose of expletives her kids would have been proud of, then turned on Anita's son when he had the temerity to suggest the school might have a point when they use d words like accountability and discipline. Basically saying "it's got nothing to do with you, they're my kids". Because mum knows best.
Or maybe he just didn't want to trade in his rather nice Honda Civic for a crappy 7-seater people carrier to ferry them all round in.
So now we'll have an extra body and a shit load of bin bags to shoehorn into our bungalow. What joy.
Sorry for the rant, but then Abstract Chat has been rather quiet today.

Bobby Chariot, never heard of him, very 70s... reminds me a bit of Bernard manning, who once did a stand-up at a pub local to me. He was terrible. Only thing he said that was slightly funny, was how when his old mum was ill, he had to carry her downstairs every morning to make his breakfast. 70s was a bad time for stand-up comedy.

What a nightmare: you are supposed to follow a one-way system; many of the items are not clearly marked with their price, and worse of all when you go to the lower level to get to the checkout (all self service) you have to change the plastic carrier sack or bucket for a metal trolley.
Now in itself that should be nothing to get troubled about, but in my case every time I touched the metalwork of the trolley I got a static shock. I got so fed up with that I was obliged to put on my gloves.
I was wearing leather sole shoes, but I can't see how that should have made a difference.

I'm not a fan of IKEA shopping either. We were there a couple of weeks ago for some Kallax shelving for grandkid's toys (not assembled them yet). Time before that was about 3 years ago - we got to checkout, when Anita realised she'd forgotten something. I set off back, going against the one way system. I got a bit lost, so she waited about 20 minutes for my return.
To relieve the boredom I used to predict how many pregnant women I'd see there. Lots of small children now, I guess time marches on.
I don't know who the bloke is that does the tannoy announcements, he sounds like someone's grandfather looking for the exit.
This morning Anita ordered a tall lamp from IKEA on her phone - it will be delivered tomorrow to a post office local to us, for an extra 4 quid. That's more like it :)

The trolleys are designed to keep giving you shocks until you've spent a sufficient amount.

I think you're right, wall mounting is the intended method. But my concern would be the weight - based on a rough calculation of an average 5 albums per kg, a filled eight-cube Kallax would weigh in at about 120kg (about 265lb in old money) plus the shelving itself.
But just sat directly on the floor just didn't look right to me, so I cut some pieces of 3x2 timber into 100mm lengths, matt sprayed them black and placed them under the shelving. Looks a bit more like proper furniture now.
I've since come across things like this on Amazon - hundreds of different designs and finishes available - but I'm not changing them now.

It did - it belonged to my father. I now use it, and it's been used hard and I have never had the rips or worn parts patched. It's too far gone to do anything about it now

£925 per month does sound pretty good for city centre accommodation - we pay about £150 per month less than that, but we do live a bit out in the sticks where you need transport to get to anything interesting. Still, that's for a detached bungalow with lots of garden, your dog would be well pleased once he got used to the funny accents.

That looks pretty tidy, and a decent size for a new 'un. Ok it's a semi, but they have thoughtfully built it with the front doors together, which means the lounges (listening rooms :)) are at the opposite ends of the building. So you can play your bagpipes as loud as you like.

Yep, and if you want it extra loud they've provided a garage to convert into a dedicated room as well.
Although I suppose the landlord might have an issue with that.

Where's yer van? Or is it like a lot of places, where using the bus is cheaper than city centre parking?
£925 per month does sound pretty good for city centre accommodation - we pay about £150 per month less than that, but we do live a bit out in the sticks where you need transport to get to anything interesting. Still, that's for a detached bungalow with lots of garden, your dog would be well pleased once he got used to the funny accents.
Van is rather large for popping out to a cafe!! Besides I walk my dog in the afternoons, but cos its always raining now we have to get the bus, or if not then she just can't walk that far anymore. A bunglow in Brighton would be rented out for about £1800!!

That looks pretty tidy, and a decent size for a new 'un. Ok it's a semi, but they have thoughtfully built it with the front doors together, which means the lounges (listening rooms :)) are at the opposite ends of the building. So you can play your bagpipes as loud as you like.
How do you know that the lounges are at separate end of the building?

I recognise the layout from the outside view. Walking through the front door you'll have a small wc and washbasin to the right, and a long narrow hallway leading to lounge on the left, stairs on the right and dining kitchen at the end. Probably.

Wrong. Doors apart means lounges adjoining.

Correct. Doors together means lounges apart. And having a downstairs bog next to the front door can be handy if you get home desperate for a dump :)
