As for all this chat about 'fur burgers', I'm too shy and lead too sheltered a life to indulge in it:o

Ooops sorry about that Steve... however toob rolling isn't that sexy is it ? ...... and, as you mentioned it, I'm not about to change any time soon... I'm just honest...

On the TV front I got a nice Samsung few months back... I decided against the more expensive QLED/OLED's as they defo need the 4K stuff to shine...

We bought an Amazon Fire TV stick 4K, and I started watching one of their programmes last night (called "Goliath" with Billy Bob Thornton), and it's difficult to explain, but it wasn't like you were watching actors performing, rather it was like viewing CCTV footage (albeit vey high res) of people going about their day. Somehow the "romance" was gone.

Maybe I'll get used to it, but I wish I hadn't sold my Panasonic Plasma :(

They took all the trees
Put 'em in a tree museum
And they charged the people
A dollar and a half just to see 'em
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you've got
Till it's gone
They paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

'That was Big Yellow Taxi by Joni Mitchell, a song in which Joni complains they paved paradise to put up a parking lot, a measure which actually would have alleviated traffic congestion on the outskirts of paradise, something which Joni singularly fails to point out, perhaps because it doesn't quite fit in with her blinkered view of the world. Nevertheless, nice song. It's 4:35 AM, you're listening to Up With The Partridge.'

Whenever I tipped the contents of a can of, say, baked beans or thick soup, the thicker part at the bottom of the tin was always more stubborn and had to be encouraged out with a spoon or fork. That was until I discovered (probably told by someone else) that opening the bottom of the can is the way to go.

This worked great for a while, until the manufacturers helpfully started putting ring pulls on. Which is nice, but puts me back to my original problem. I've considered firing off an email to Heinz, suggesting that the solution wouldn't be difficult or costly - they just need to put the labels on upside down.

I wouldn't go so far as to describe this as a taboo subject, but I haven't heard it discussed anywhere.

I certainly don't feel that I need to get a life (as Mrs. P suggests), and in the meantime I'll be conducting an experiment (storing the tins upside down), and hopefully the results will support my theory :)

Today's soup was beef broth, yesterday it was pea and ham :) Specially produced for folk like me who don't want to spend their leisure time dicking around with ingredients. I thought I'd put that in before you start on one :D And as they are for me dinner they go in a flask  With half a baguette which barely fits into the plastic cup.

Surely it is the way the tins are stored which results in the contents settling at the bottom? So the idea of the storing the tins upside down has some merit.

For my part, I use tinned baked beans so rarely (either as part of a British "heart attack on a plate" breakfast, or as a filling in a baked potato), that I'm quite happy to use a spoon to remove the contents.

She's busy minding her own business, how about you? :ner:

Seriously she already has plenty to do chasing after her two useless grown up(!) kids, her equally useless dad, and dealing with every other aspect of running the house (cooking, cleaning, washing, ironing etc keeping on top of bills and keeping the car, van and bikes legal), you know what's involved here, and you manage it without often debilitating health problems. Is that show still going?

Yep, and I've watched nearly every episode since Robin Day was host - my weekly lesson on politics. Now hosted by Fiona Bruce, who I have a bit of a "thinking man's" crush on. :)

“Woke” culture is a subculture from America that focuses on social justice-related, anarchist, or leftist issues, such as microaggressions (offensive phrases that make others feel excluded), police actions against Blacks, high rates of poverty driving Blacks, Native Americans, and Latinos into poverty,

I don't know why either, I just know that they do.

It does depend on the quality of the contents though - when I was a kid we never had a proper 'Christmas stocking', so my mum made do with an old pair of her stockings, which she'd filled with apples oranges and walnuts. There was nothing sexy about any of it I can tell you, especially as mum didn't bother to wash the old stockings first :(

I see Chris Whitty, the Chief Medical Officer is talking rubbish, "The NHS is extremely well prepared". Prepared for what? If the Corona Virus gets into the general population, there will be nothing at all he can do about it and the infection will be as catching as a 'normal' Flu epidemic, but with far higher mortality of possibly one in 25 of the afflicted dying. There is potential for maybe a million UK deaths. Scary stuff!

Agreed

The likely explanation for suspected cases of spontaneous human combustion, is that there is an external source of ignition such as a match, a cigarette, an electrical spark that sets off the wick effect, but the evidence of it is destroyed by the fire.

I sometimes see this TV programme about Australia's airport customs - most of it seems to be about the weird crap that Chinese folk try to bring into the country. They must be really picky to feel they have to bring food from home to get by. And most of it looks like it was picked from a litter tray. No wonder they're all mental.

In case you think I'm being racist I will say that we have our share of mental people too - particularly the guy who works down the (Chinese) chip shop swears he's Elvis.

My partner is away in Africa to attend a funeral.

To contact her I can easily use her mobile number prefixed with the IDD country code. However that costs a fortune - last time I ran up a £250 phone bill! So now I use 'Talk Home' cards: pre-payment cards that can buy you over three hours, depending on location.

The only snag is you have to enter 35 digits: 11 to dial access; a 10 digit PIN, and then the 14 digit phone number. Easy to make a mistake, but you do save a hell of a lot of money.

All the talk is about the Corona virus but this is also flu season and people catch and die from that in large numbers.

While everyone is in a panic about the coronavirus (officially renamed COVID-19 by the World Health Organization), there's an even deadlier virus many people are forgetting about: the flu.

Flu season is hitting its stride right now in the US. So far, the CDC has estimated (based on weekly influenza surveillance data) that at least 12,000 people have died from influenza between Oct. 1, 2019 through Feb. 1, 2020, and the number of deaths may be as high as 30,000.

The CDC also estimates that up to 31 million Americans have caught the flu this season, with 210,000 to 370,000 flu sufferers hospitalized because of the virus.

so it is at moment not really killing any more than flu is... But its difficult not to get swept up in it thats for sure..

Pigmy Pony
04-03-2020, 20:38
Is it the highly contagious nature of Corona virus that's the issue, rather than the severity of the illness? Rather than trying to keep folk away from each other by closing schools, cancelling public gatherings, etc (I don't believe anything can halt its spread), perhaps Dept of Health should be concentrating their efforts on the elderly and those with weak immune systems.

I'm not worrying about it personally, my constitution is pretty robust - one of the plated-up and frozen meals Mrs P made for me before bogging off to Egypt was decidedly dodgy, but after a quick bout of vomiting I was right as rain :)

It's not as if the stock at supermarkets will never be replaced. Folks will end up with months worth of goods, only to find the shelves re-stocked within days.

I anticipated something similar in the run up to Brexit and stocked up on likely essentials last summer.

I have also taken the precaution of opening a Tesco account and arranging grocery deliveries. No point mingling with the masses unnecessarily in view of the probably increasing health risk.

Today ,I was busy rolling , but after dinner the delivery man dropped off my new Yamaha CD-S300 CD player and postie dropped the interconnects I bought from Andyrlb to put in it :eyebrows:

Havent had a chance to meddle with them yet !!!

Today I was mainly putting the Yamaha in the stack (I took out the Minidisc player as I dont use it )
I was pleasantly suprised as it sounds more defined and brighter that the old Denon DCD 615 with the £5 DAC on it :eyebrows:

At least the Yam remote for the S 500 amp is now able to do more functions (it was setup to operate a CD S300 but they did supply a new remote for the cd player on its own ) just in case you dont own a Yamaha amp from the same series

It kept me occupied listening to it ,whilst I sort through the Commodore 64 computer stuff and Sinclair spectrum games and consoles I fetched out of the loft !

Today im wondering is i ought to ask for a refund for some speakers i bought last week that are pick up only. I dont really want to be picking them up & the seller says the same but this could easily be a long drawn out wait as he said he'd let me know! Ive been here before & lost a load of money in the process.

Why can you no longer pick them up? What's changed really? You don't have to go in his house - he can run cable through window and connect them outside. You have a listen, and if happy just unplug and off you jolly well pop :)

Close contact issues. Its not worth the shit for the sake of speakers. I dont know why i paid him up front really but he wanted it in his PP. Smells like its my money that the missus aint getting her hands on type of thing lol..

You're right of course Andre. My post was a bit hasty - I would have to decline pick up too, thinking about it. Hope you can get your cash back :)

For someone who doesn't eat much you seem to spend a lot of your self isolation time in shops! I think you're secretly a bit of a sweetheart, shopping for your elderly neighbours but don't want to say :)

Today I have mainly been admiring my new haircut! After cancelling our lovely hairdresser twice!
My sont ,2 weeks ago purchased some Braun clippers and did himself a grade 3.

Well ,I couldn't wait for the hairdresser either and had a grade 4.5 (or so he termed it )
Back of the net ,nice and manageable:)

Yes , I thought (when I turned it on half way in ) it was factual !!!
This am ,my sister (whos retired ) told me she was self isolating ,and could I get her some stuff if I was shopping ??? I work 7 days a week ,and she is ten days back from her holiday sking in France FFS

So after saying possibly , I asked her if she enjoyed the hols -OOOh she did ,but she was so sad that that might be the only holiday she might get in this yr !!!
So I put my size 11 in it ,by remarking that never mind - she had been on 5 holidays in the last 12 months so she wouldnt really be needing another !!:D

I dont think it was well received :)

If not a baby boom around Christmas, there will be a surge of couples filing for divorce in 2021.

Meanwhile, one of the side effects of the lockdown in Italy has been a reported 13% upsurge in the sales of sex toys!
