I'm having a "doppler" scan today on my lower leg which recently suffered an injury and is just not healing. I think the idea is to check my veins/arteries are ok to have a compression bandage on (which will supposedly speed healing).
Thing is, a nurse ordered the appointment 5 weeks ago, and since then I've had a plastic surgeon tell me to cancel the appointment as it's pointless, and another nurse tell me it's important and shouldn't be cancelled. Oh well, better to have and not need, than to need and not have...
I've got the day off, got to use up my holidays before end of the year.

Interesting... many years ago, due to a cock up in calculations when scuba diving at altitude, my uncle got decompression sickness, and spent 2 weeks spending time in what I think was called a hyperbaric chamber. Had to go up to Aberdeen for it. He was told by doctors to never dive again as it could end him. So he switched to a less risky pursuit - rock climbing :eek:
I think some people just like being on the edge, makes them feel alive. Not me :nono:

yup, some just live for being on the edge. i prefer to be well off edge these days lol. footballers use these all time to speed up healing so they must be about fairly locally in every area i presume. probably private hospitals/clinics tho

That looks like it could be beneficial, though strangely the nurse performing the doppler scan and compression bandage had no knowledge of this.
Anyway, it turns out my lower leg veins and arteries are tip top, which is nice.
Only problem is that the bandaging is so thick I can hardly get my boots on. Which is a good excuse for swerving work for a few days. But if this is going to be 3 or 4 weeks I'm going to have to find something nice and wide for my foot which will also be waterproof. Because I can ill-afford to stay home till after Christmas.
I'll have a poke round on Amazon, see if there's anything that will do the job.

I think folk should seriously consider stocking up on everything including keeping cars filled/charged up. If the current situation descends into a general strike, which seems a distinct possibility, availability of everything including services may become problematic!

I don't want to overstate my disinterest in their "plight" for fear of being branded a racist. As Dusty was wont to say, I just don't know what to do with myself :( I Feel trapped, like in a dutch oven.

My opinion might not be popular here, but I actually don't mind the Royal Family and all the pomp that goes with it. An integral part of British life imo, and value for money too. I don't have the figures, but I'm betting their existence brings in more money than it costs.

Our local beef farmer who sells some great beef ,came to us with some stuff we ordered . She put a carrier bag in my hand with a fresh Ox heart in it .
Not usually squeamish but I have trimmed it up and put it in the slow cooker with some beef stock ,garlic and paprika ,oregano ,and going to cook it on slow all day for tonights tea :rolleyes:
I fully expect it to be lovely ,whereas my wife nearly runs outta the kitchen at the mention of it :lol:
As the saying goes ,if you eat all the best bits then you have to make full use of every bit ,bar the squeek

And the big plant atop my REL sub has been replaced by a super tall super slim tree. As long as Mrs. P doesn't dress it with chocolate decorations, causing granddaughter to climb on the sub to harvest them. Up with that I will not put :nono:

At work they sent someone out to buy an xmas tree for the office. They got some baubles too but wanted tinsel. I went in the warehouse to look for some and found about six trees still in the boxes.
Someone made an 'angel' for the top, supposed to be holding a wand but it looks like a lit cigarette.

Anita bought a new tree on Friday, as I gave her so much shit about the old one putting a light scratch on the side of one of the speakers. The new one is super-slim, not so much a tree, more like a glittery mast.

Really it's just a toaster, I may have exaggerated its talents. It comes with a little grill pan, and it's also a panini press. Not tried it for that. It's only big enough for 2 slices, but that's enough for me. Should be a bit more economical than cooker's grill.
She just bought it because it looks cool in her new kitchen. She also bought a Ninja food processor, which she is using a lot.

Some countries now have legal protection for such people so the journalist could end up in gaol if they misspecified the gender, sex or whatever it's called these days. Not sure if Australia is one such place but it means free speech (that is not threatening someone) is now illegal if you have a certain viewpoint as many millions do.

Sweden got sick of it and voted in a far right govt., which is not the answer, why can't it ever be a far left govt.? Only one that hasn't caught the Woke virus? no they haven't, they've got a minority government led by a Moderate. The do have the support of the SD but I wouldn't describe the SD as 'Far Right', Maybe years ago they were. Of course they are, first Brexit, then Marine Le Pen's party making Macron look over his shoulder, now Meloni in Italy, as stated SD gaining a lot of ground in Sweden. Though Brexit is not exactly a far-right phenomenon. In fact I would say that these are all expressions of nationalism, not necessarily far right politics, I used the term earlier a bit loosely. In Sweden and other Nordic countries the rate of immigration from Middle Eastern/African states is astonishing, and they are having issues with that, so the rise of Nationalist parties is hardly a surprise, in fact its been a long time coming. Italy is often the first port of call for African immigrants/so called refugees, mainstream parties/the EU won't address this adequately so 'Brothers of Italy' got in, let's see how they address the issue. I think people voted for them out of exasperation with the mainstream politicians, they may deliver on immigration, and some cultural issues, but on economic issues I'm not so sure. And yes Canada is currently leading the world in Woke governing, apparently if you're depressed there, they prescribe suicide as a cure.

I don't think there's any chance of those right wing parties ever getting full control but as you say people are rightly concerned about economic migration so some will vote for them and that does mean they have an influence on policy. If it wasn't for UKIP splitting the tory vote we would never have had the referendum on EU membership. And UKIP would never have got anywhere if it wasn't for the 'come one come all' immigration policy of the early 2000s.
Now they just come in illegally and get to stay anyway so not sure what that solved but hey ho it's a problem for the younger generation now.

Just wait till migration proper starts due to global warming, as the central belt heats up and Africa becomes a furness for 2/3 of the year, and similar in India and Pakistan millions will be marching North looking for somewhere to survive. If the USA think they have issues now with immigration from South they will face even worse as well.

don't really buy that since we already had a surplus of unskilled workers amongst the indigenous personnel going back to at least the late 70s. The problem was that for those with children getting an unskilled job meant they were worse off than on benefits.
Bringing in millions of unskilled labour from abroad prevented wages rising for unskilled workers, which is the only other possible outcome when there is a labour shortage.
The problem is when all those imported unskilled workers start having children and discover that, since unskilled wages are still too low, that they are better off on benefits. This is why the welfare bill is now a third of government spending.
Flips side to all that is if you don't increase the unskilled labour pool, unskilled wages rise and the cost of everything rises as a result. Personally I think that the lesser of the two evils. Like most things there's no simple solution, there's probably not even a complex solution.

So unions fighting for their members interests are the one's 'responsible' for inflation, this is just the scenario we have right now with the biggest wave of strikes since the 70s. Wage rises/bonuses ok for me, but not for thee!

I don't think there's any chance of those right wing parties ever getting full control but as you say people are rightly concerned about economic migration so some will vote for them and that does mean they have an influence on policy. If it wasn't for UKIP splitting the tory vote we would never have had the referendum on EU membership. And UKIP would never have got anywhere if it wasn't for the 'come one come all' immigration policy of the early 2000s.
Now they just come in illegally and get to stay anyway so not sure what that solved but hey ho it's a problem for the younger generation now.
The public debate over immigration is messed up, neither side want to admit their own contradictions. On the pro side all immigrants/boat people are refugees, even though the evidence overwhelmingly points to the fact that many are obviously economic migrants, like the Albanians for instance, and also many of the Africans. On the other side, post Brexit we actually need immigrants to fill the gap left by European workers - so why not fill it with those who need it most? I think genuine refugees should be allowed to work as well from day one, at least they'll pay their way. partly anyway. On the other hand I don't think we or any European nation are under any obligation to take in countless numbers of refugees from the Middle East/Africa, we may be party to UN refugee laws, but on a moral basis, why? The UK is densely populated enough as it is, housing is at an absolute peak capacity in the South and many cities anyway. What the Middle East and Africa need is democracy, countries like Iran, many of their own people hate the government, no wonder they want out of there.

Such as his reclaiming of the Russian Fascist Ivan Ilyin, who was extradited by the Bolseviks, only for his corpse to be returned to Russia in 2008 by Putin, who gave him a ceremonial reburial in his homeland. Putin openly associates with Fascists such as Dugin and quite a few others, the national conversation over in Russia is hyper Nationalistic if RT is anything to go by. This is why I'm shit scared of WW3 starting with Ukraine, I kind of wish the US and Nato states would stop getting involved.

you look inside them there's only a couple of boards, not much to go wrong. Not like the old tellies with dozens of boards. Had the repair man to re-solder something in every six months, you didn't think anything of it in those days.
Then when he'd left you'd sit down and watch it in a room full of solder fumes. Happy days.

Last week Mrs. P bought a used TV for her sister off Facebook (LG about 50") which was about 2 years old. Like brand new and had two(!) remotes. £60. TVs have next to no resale value, so there's some real bargains to be had.
3 years ago I bought an 18 month old LG OLED 55", off Ebay which the seller had bought from Currys for £1800 (he gave me the receipt) and we paid £650. Which is the same as we paid for a clumpy 32" Sony CRT from Currys 15 years ago.

I had a 28'' Philips off a mate, it had been his mam and dad's originally and he'd had it a while. Must have been late 70s or very early 80s. You had to give that a bash on the top a couple of times a night, and it whined. It would blow the mains fuse on occasion. Had that about 2 years until I could afford to rent a Hitachi.
Next time think I will go stupid big and get a 75'' or 80''. Bin end ofc.

Open passenger door, clamp window between your hands and push upwards while someone works the button. Worked with a van I used to have. Then leave it alone till next year :)

Twas the motor, garage had to take it out in order to make the window free, then shored that up with a block of wood, what a relief, at least van can be driven now without getting very wet.

cant drink beer now the gluten goes for me.. wine is ok as a glass or 2; red pref, or a white fruity italian. but a nice malt has no peers, especially if its had a bit of sherry treatment and a decent age. that aberfeldy 16 is bloody good although its 60 notes a bottle

With a poorly Sugden and a ropey electric window to pay for, just as well really.
Fortunately I can still drink alcohol: beer, whisk(e)y, and wine. Obviously not in the quantities I used to be able to imbibe when I was younger; but if over a few hours, still quite a few units. Though I do have two or three days free of alcohol.
When out drinking with mates, it's beer (preferable real ale), but most of the time it's wine with a meal. I do drink whisky, but I know of a few single malts that I like; so whiskey is only an occasional nightcap, or very rarely an aperitif.

Nearly 12 months ago my younger brother started radiation treatment for an inoperable throat cancer, which buggered up his saliva glands, leading to a permanently dry mouth, difficulty swallowing, and will eventually cause tooth loss. But in April he finally got the 'all clear', got to ring the bell too.
Now it's back. I saw him a couple of days ago, he has a huge scar down the side of his neck, and is on a diet almost exclusively of porridge and soup. Whatever it is that was removed has left him with zero immunity, and to top it all he has to go through the chemo and radiation stuff again in January. He's a non smoking keen cyclist who doesn't drink or eat to excess. Largely the polar opposite to me, and yet... life can be cruel.

Thanks guys. He's facing a tough time, but he is a tough guy. Way tougher than me. And his partner is a nurse, which could be useful... All I can do is check on him periodically and offer help with anything that's going to push his physical abilities. I know from his last bout that he will be giving folk a wide berth, you can't risk taking Covid into a cancer ward for all kinds of reasons.

Thanks guys, I've had a lazy couch potato day, being waited on hand and foot. Mrs. P got me a 'smart watch' (that's what it says on the box). I don't really need a gadget to remind me what a lazy git I am, but if it at least tells the time I'll wear it :)
For Christmas I got her one of the figurines she collects (she's up at about sixty of them now (called Willow Tree I think), and it took me a couple of purchases/returns to hit on one she didn't have :doh:
She wanted (as usual) to wait until after Christmas to pick out a gift for herself, but then just before Christmas she informed me that in June we're going to see Rag 'n' Bone Man at Cardiff Castle, with bed & breakfast at a hotel 5 mins walk from the venue. We'll have a couple more days in the area while down there, I'm told Pembrokeshire is a nice place.

You've got an easy birth date to remember! Happy birthday. When in Wales best to stay away from Newport, I was brought up there, it's a proper shit hole. Cardiff's OK though, a few arcades, some nice pubs, castles worth a visit too in the day time, and a very decent museum if that's your thing.

He wanted to buy a packet of (I think) Marlboro cigarettes, which the sales assistant quickly found for him. But no, he didn't like the picture on the packet!
For those of you who don't smoke, you may not be aware that these days to encourage smokers to give up, cigarette packets are adorned with a photograph of what damage smoking does to your lungs. Now I would have thought that one picture of diseased lungs looks pretty much like another - but this awkward customer insisted they found him a packet with a different picture. The sales assistant called for the supervisor, who pointed out that they could only sell the packs they were supplied with and he would have to 'take it or leave it', as he was holding up the queue The customer was adamant that they find him a different pack - the standoff only being resolved by the supermarket staff going through the entire stock to find (mirabile dictu) a pack that satisfied him.
Then he wanted to buy a Lottery ticket - and finally quibbled over the change he was given! :doh:
The poor sales assistant had the patience of a saint, and if she was new to the job it was a bit of a baptism of fire for her.

London again for the 3rd day running, nowt to do in Brighton when it rains. British museum was ok, though a bit busy. After a while though you get bored of all those statues and carvings of soldiers on horseback..... The scarab beetle was good, and a few impressive sarcophagus, oh and the Assyrian half man/half horse. Sat in a cafe, I'm the only white guy there, everyone else either arabic/asian! Soon our cities will just be playgrounds for the rich kids of the Middle East and China.

You should have gone downstairs to look at the Benin bronze plaques. They were looted from Nigeria but could possibly be returned on an exchange exhibition basis.

Didn't know there was a basement, will likely go again soon, it's a huge museum, after seeing one or two rooms, fatigue sets in. Went to the Courtald gallery recently, small and perfectly formed.......
Agree re. the Courtald gallery. :) The Victoria and Albert museum is also well worth a visit; but like the BM, one has to be selective.

No idea how it performs overall, I not got past making toast yet. Mrs P did some cheese on toast the other day, and it didn't come out cremated. I think ours came via Amazon, no probs with delivery.
Since well before Christmas she's been bangin' on about the Ninja Foodi Max, which had been selling faster than they could make them. Some folk were snapping them up then reselling them at vastly inflated prices on Ebay. Madness. Anyway we were in Currys at the weekend to buy a Vax Blade 4 Pets cordless vacuum cleaner (its a belter!) and they had some of these Foodi Max jobbies in stock.
So we got one, but she hasn't used it yet. I'm hoping it won't end up as loft-fodder, like Breville toasters and foot spas did in the olden days.

i got one the 15 in 1... not opened the box yet and had it for over a month.. expensive shelf currently, but it was cheap at time and i thought my current old foodi was about to give in...its still worky, so for now will just leave it. not strong enough to open it anyway lol
typical beaurocracy talk... no...we'd rather the food is wasted than starving people get it..(no doubt the council members own the shops;))

had a bit of mould starting on the bathroom windowsill, gave it a dose of domestos, few hours later it's gone. Not had a problem in any other room though even though I've never heated them in 25 years.
as long as its a non pourus surface, bleach is the best imo too. i used it on the outside bottoms of my mums house and it killed all the mouldy bits, and allowed me to overpaint.

It does look like they have plans for it - they've kept the stone facade and binned everything else. Probably end up housing an accountancy firm in a futile bid to look cool. We have a 'repurposed' waterworks in Chorley that has gone this way.

Oh and this was the inside of our baths - there was also a smaller pool too in the building which was about 2/3 size, and something called "slipper baths" which I think was for folk who didn't have a bath at home. Oh and cafe in the basement where we'd have a cup of Bovril and a bag of crisps afterwards.

Yes it is. For part of the year they used to board over the pool and have ballroom dancing there. They did have a second, slightly smaller pool that stayed open all year. That Maindee pool looks great, shame they have to ruin these things in the name of 'progress' :(

It closed about 20 years ago, don't know why peeps these days don't want to go swimming. I can;t imagine boarding over a pool these days and using it for other activities! I think sometimes we've got too much these days, and no community spirit left. Can you remember going to the cinema?

neolithic burial site in the hills here.. you get a great view of a chunk of central scotland from there. you can enter from a trap door but its pretty tight. if i got in(unlikely) i'd end up being a part of it.

You were right to be wary - don't know what your canal was like, but the ones local to us (Leeds Liverpool canal and Lancaster canal) have an average depth of 3 to 4 feet. You'd prob be ok with Manchester Ship canal, which averages 28 to 30 feet. Nice bit of useless information there.

union canal near here is about 4/5 ft deep i think too.. the clyde one which the union goes into is slightly deeper at about 6ft.. a lot of folk fish them

no they usually have diving pools separate these days which is sensible i think. in old days it was dangerous at time up at deep end(mostly due to kids tbh).
I used to use the Liverpool University pool and looking it up I notice that it's been refurbished and they have got rid of the diving boards. Used to be a big concrete tower with three platforms, the top one was very high.
Also you could walk down a sloping corridor that ran parallel to the pool and at the end was a window level with the bottom of the deep end. Don't know if that is still there but it was quite fun so they've probably bricked it up.

You know I've been dreading the day when we have to redecorate and get new carpets in the lounge and dining room, and all the upheaval that would entail, but now that time has come it's really not that bad... that's a lie, it's a bloody nightmare!
All of my hifi gear, records, CDs and associated audio crap have completely filled the spare bedroom (our only available space), while the a/v stuff is sharing our bedroom with us, with the big telly leaning on the wardrobe. I got the telly off the wall this morning, and inadvertently unplugged the heating's 'Hive' unit. Which now refuses to go bacl online... fortunately Mrs. P was able to get heating on manually.
And two days ago we left the house for a few hours while the painter sanded the lounge and dining room's window boards ready for painting, a process I'd assumed would involve some sandpaper sheets and elbow grease. Turns out he'd used an orbital sander with a torn dust bag. So I returned to find my speakers and hifi units looking like the aftermath of Pompeii's worst day. The painter was apologetic and offered to clean them with his rag, an offer I politely declined with a smile on my face even though I'd died a little bit inside :( Seeing the little radio he brought with him that looked like, well, a painter's radio should have set off warning bells :(
Through all this Mrs. P is still having packages delivered from Amazon etc., one of which I sent to a fellow forum member. Contained a selection of hoover parts instead of the record sleeves he was expecting :doh: So there's that as well...
I've been tempted to come out of my semi-retirement and go back to work to get away from all this, if only a while. But then I'd be leaving Anita to deal with all this on her own. And who knows what fresh hell I'd be coming home to? :doh:
Can't wait for next Tuesday to come, when the carpets have been fitted, and I can begin the unenviable task of putting all this stuff back together. And if it still works I'll show my arse in Woollies' shop window. Onwards and upwards eh?

Wife was bedbound so I could leave room a pit for a few months and do the job in my own time. Papering took an age as walls were knackered. So 2 coats of thick stuff, one a thick undersheet to level the surface a bit. Also fitted coving an such like. Then go the guys in to put a quality carpet and underlay after the fireplace was fitted. Took me 3 months
True - it's the distaff side that is more interested in home decor. However, if they are willing to pitch in, it can all be done relatively quickly, cheaply, and with minimal interruption.
When we decorated the lounge, everything was moved to one end and put under dust covers, whilst half the ceiling was painted (two coats). Then everything was moved to the other end to paint the second half of the ceiling. When it came to the walls, we just painted over the textured wallpaper with emulsion, but it did mean dismantling the shelving and storing all the books up the stairs.
Before we had new carpets fitted, I had an electrician round to install a separate ring main for the audio system, which allowed me to run balanced-line audio cables under the floor between the sources and preamps to the monobloc amplifiers and speakers. I dislike the look of cables trailing around the sides and skirting boards.
In all, we were without the audio system for only two days, whilst the floor was clear for the electrician and the carpet fitter; though at times the setup was nowhere near acoustically optimum.
The TV has always been in a separate room, as I didn't want to compete with the hi-fi - but my partner has other ideas in that quarter. I think we will have to come to some sort of compromise, even though I probably watch more TV than she does.

All the painting's done now, and the carpets go down on Monday. I won't have a problem re-installing the hifi gear, but the TV related stuff will be another matter. TV, blu ray player, Sky Q box, Sky broadband router, 'Hive' heating controller, a/v amp, 5 surround speakers plus sub, printer... I don't see all that going back together without a few tears and a lot of swearing.

All of my hifi gear, records, CDs and associated audio crap have completely filled the spare bedroom (our only available space), while the a/v stuff is sharing our bedroom with us, with the big telly leaning on the wardrobe. I got the telly off the wall this morning, and inadvertently unplugged the heating's 'Hive' unit. Which now refuses to go bacl online... fortunately Mrs. P was able to get heating on manually.
And two days ago we left the house for a few hours while the painter sanded the lounge and dining room's window boards ready for painting, a process I'd assumed would involve some sandpaper sheets and elbow grease. Turns out he'd used an orbital sander with a torn dust bag. So I returned to find my speakers and hifi units looking like the aftermath of Pompeii's worst day. The painter was apologetic and offered to clean them with his rag, an offer I politely declined with a smile on my face even though I'd died a little bit inside :( Seeing the little radio he brought with him that looked like, well, a painter's radio should have set off warning bells :(
Through all this Mrs. P is still having packages delivered from Amazon etc., one of which I sent to a fellow forum member. Contained a selection of hoover parts instead of the record sleeves he was expecting :doh: So there's that as well...
I've been tempted to come out of my semi-retirement and go back to work to get away from all this, if only a while. But then I'd be leaving Anita to deal with all this on her own. And who knows what fresh hell I'd be coming home to? :doh:
Can't wait for next Tuesday to come, when the carpets have been fitted, and I can begin the unenviable task of putting all this stuff back together. And if it still works I'll show my arse in Woollies' shop window. Onwards and upwards eh?
bloody hell, sounds like a right nightmare. I take after my father, he wouldn't even get double glazing fitted because he didn't want 'All the upheaval.'
Makes me think back in the stone age, living in caves. Then some bloke is the first one to knock-up a log hut or whatever. I wonder what the initial take-up was on that idea?

:lol: Love it, and so true! I suspect the evolution of our living spaces has been largely driven by the wallpaper manufacturers, who to be fair had a quiet time of it for the first few thousand years.

Had a rubbish night. Tossing and turning with waterworks discomfort (bloody prostatitis flaring up again :rolleyes:). Dozed off about 2am and woke again at 4.22, tossing and turning for anther hour or so before dozing off again and finally surfaced at 8am with a headache, bunged up sinuses and toothache. Bollocks!

son and i both get tesco ones and pay a fee monthly to get anytime deliveries. works out well and a big saving

I think it is real, but we don't know how many attempts it took.
Just returned from a charity shop 'run' Came back with 10 CDs, and as I can't stand cracked or dirty jewel cases, had to replace two of them. Whilst I have plenty of new replacement cases, it is nearly always just the front that need replacing. Why can't one just buy the front halves?

I was thinking that the other day when replacing one of mine. You end up chucking a perfectly good piece.
Have you ever noticed how much difference there is the half that the CD sits in? Some are really chunky and some are like they are made from old Tic Tac boxes.

Coincidentally I have recently been through my old CD collection (pre 2007 that went into storage when I moved that year) replacing all the broken cases with my wife's ones that had badly scratched CDs in (which were most of them as she only really used them in the car and left them out of the case in the glovebox or wherever). My collection had a lot of broken ones due to an accident when I had a few mates around one night, and my IKEA Benno (Benny?) CD towers weren't secured to the wall, so you can imagine what happened [emoji23]
It was quite interesting matching fronts and backs from different periods as you could see how they changed from the basic grey inner'd early ones to the better ones usually with transparent or shiny black innards.
Yes - the quality and durability of the tray 'claw', over which the CD fits, can vary quite a bit..

Off to IKEA shortly, to collect a dining table and chairs, so we can go back to eating like civilised folk again. This is our second trip there in the last seven days. I quickly lose the will to live in that place, but this time we've done the click'n'collect thing, so should be painless.
When we went there a couple of years ago, I set myself the task of counting the pregnant women (there were many) to relieve the boredom. Last week, not so many, but plenty of babies and toddlers. i suppose time marches on. Quite a few babies carried by dads in those front facing rucksacks. Must be a new age thing, made me feel like a right dinosaur - when my girls were little we either shoved them round in a pushchair, or preferably left them with grandparents.

Yep, they don't know they're born, but they have too much to say for themselves. Not helped by the parents' lack of a sense of humour. I mean if we recited one of those old jokes, like "What's the difference between babies and sand? You can't unload sand with a pitchfork", or the "What's red and sits in a corner?" one, they wouldn't like it.
