Really bad news, Forces TV channel is closing down on 30th June.
That is bad news, although I don't watch it very often I do record the odd show. Seems they're moving back to their core role as a military charity. https://rxtvinfo.com/2022/forces-tv-is-closing
I hope someone else picks up their shows, the good ones anyway, I'm not going to miss 'Surgical Spirit.'

Not as scary as the fact that show ran for seven series. It's so bad I can't even watch a couple of minutes of it.
Funny how some shows have improved with age, I mean 'Return Of The Saint' was crappy back in 1979 (except for the theme tune and opening title sequence ofc) yet still, compared to modern shows, it's not that bad. But I'd rather watch the 'Woke Cops With Issues' modern BBC shite than sit through an episode of 'Surgical Spirit'.

Actually saying that I did watch one episode of something terrible when I visited my mother. A serial killer was on the loose, as usual, and the woke cops with issues had to track him down.
Lots of mediocre actors saying serious things in serious tone of voice. Strong female cop who shows her fragile side but only to emphasise how professional and capable she is to overcome it.
The problem with these things is I don't care about the people who are being murdered and I don't care about the people trying to catch him as they are all so one-dimensional. I end up rooting for the serial killer to carry on and do some more murders.

yes, repeated watching is the true test. im opposite. hated being tied to a time to watch summat. used to record everything but that was tiresome too as it often didnt appear for whatever reason. tennis player split his shorts so we are staying with this sort of shit. your program youve been waiting for all week will be crammed into a tight schedule at some other time where you'll miss it.;)

I have occasionally taped a programme then when I come to watch it, it's a totally different programme from what was advertised. That's annoying, it only seems to happen on the crappier cable channels though.
Even worse are programmes with the same name as something good, or crappy remakes that keep the same name. You tape 'The Taking of Pelham 123' and when you come to watch it find out it's the dismal John Travolta version. Or you tape 'UFO' only to discover that it's a documentary series with the same name and not the classic 1969 show you were hoping to see.
Cutting is a problem too. They cut all the stripper shows out of early 'Minder' episodes, and that bit in 'The Sweeny' where you see Diane Keene's jugs.
There's also a whole episode of 'The Professionals' that they never show, the one where we find out that Bodie is a racist, even though other episodes make it clear that he isn't.
And 'Porridge' where they blur the page 3 girls that are pinned up on the cell wall. Tragic beyond belief.
Watched the last half of 'The Spy Who Loved Me' the other night, there's a bit where they break into the control room on the tanker and slaughter all the technicians. That was cut almost completely. Bond shouts 'Cease fire' but they haven't actually fired at all, then you see all these blokes lying dead. How did that happen then? Just makes no sense.

one of the things i like about my collection is they ar usually uncut and sometimes retro refitted with the cuts that were made to get a rating from censors. woke tv and film reshowing is the equ of burning books. it must be fought tooth and nail

How much of the 22% 'rest of world' is Nigeria though? Anyway I suspect these figures, like a lot of climate 'science' are just pulled from someone's ass. They are 'estimates' and how they estimated them is very relevant, but we don't know how so I wouldn't put any faith in it as it stands.

Aggregates are a distraction. What is more important is the per capita figure and what countries are doing (long term) to reduce emissions!
Short term actions to respond to the crisis caused by Russia in invading Ukraine are a matter of political and economic expediency. They should not distract from long term policy goals and actions to achieve those goals.

Just read up on them, and they migrate from southern Europe each summer, and numbers vary from year to year. Have been seen as far north as Orkney and Shetland. Might have to plant honeysuckle, they apparently like that.
There's a photo of one knocking about in Finland and it's perishing there.

Fascism? Not really a tory party thing. State above the individual, restriction of personal liberties, planned economy - aside from the nationalist aspect fascism is a left wing ideology with more in common with socialism and communism.
My guess is it will be another useless no-mark like Major or May. Someone who is not really up to the job but who won't scare the horses.

The thing about political ideologies is that they are very 19th century. We live in a whole different world now, with different problems. There's no solutions to them to be found in ideologies. It's possible there are no solutions at all.
If there are solutions then they will be very complex. Way too complex for a bunch of ex lawyers, ex accountants and people who've never done anything except be a politician to come up with, anyway.

I loved that about him too. The press went way overboard over the whole party gate, and bum fondling stuff, really petty. In the end though, he was in it for the ride, just to be top dog. To be honest, he was a phoney, they didn;t crack down on illegal immigrants, the whole Rwanda thing was a sideshow. No matter which party are in power,life doesn't change much for most people. I don't hold much hope for the next incarnation of the Tories, neither would I look forward to a Starmer govt. I wish Jezza was back! (shame about the hangers on though).

She said she should have shown more composure "but is only human".

Apart from no real policy agenda other than Brexit, consider these "achievements". Extreme and long term damage to the UK economy; promotion of repeat sex offender; lslamophobic statements; serial and compulsive liar; Partygate; Wallpapergate; repeated abuse and waste of vast amounts of public money; his performance as Foreign Secretary and refusal to leave accomodation after being removed from office; reneging on agreement HE signed with EU; poor handling of Covid pandemic; attempts to use public funds to favour ex-girlfriend and now wife; threats to security in Ireland by attacks on Northern Ireland Protocol. I could go on but my typing fingers are tiring. Without doubt the most corrupt and venal PM in recent history. Comparisons to Churchill are frankly ridiculous. Churchill had many faults but he would never put his own interests above those of the country the way Johnson has. Even now the refusal to leave office immediately is a sign of his total self centredness!

I think what she misses is that sign to press etc is that sign to the general public.
Now we know that's what most feel privately but now she's stuck with it for life.

I have no problem with being just plain wrong, it won't be the first time. But you won't convince me that bad behaviour among politicians is a new thing. It just isn't as easily hidden as it used to be.
We've had televised parliament since the 80s, but there was considerable opposition to it among MPs at the time. Maggie herself was concerned for "the good reputation of the House".
Time spent wringing our hands in despair at all this is time not enjoying good music, so at the risk of appearing shallow I'll just say I'm out of this...

The old dividing lines of Labour/Tory are now moribund, but no one else is powerful enough to get a look in, no matter who gets elected things will go on regardless of Parliament. Rents are now at a monstrous level in the South east and elsewhere, can parliament do anything about this? Yes, will it? No. They can't even stop liittle boats of economic migrants, sorry refugees. The whole Rwanda thing is a sideshow, the Tories don;t actually give two shits about immigration from countries whose culture is vastly different to our own, they'll do what their capitalist paymasters tell them to, and when that's 'we need more workers, low paid preferably', then that's what they'll get.
There's a labour shortage right now, even round here which has always had a high unemployment rate. Almost every business has 'staff required' notices outside. I get leaflets through the door from businesses trying to recruit. There's one down the road from me with seventy vacancies to fill. Not been like this since the early 1970s.
And you can still buy a house here for under a hundred grand. Rents too high in the SE? Move up north.

When I was younger and these things mattered to me more, It was commonly stated that non-animal proteins didn't have the full complement of essential amino acids, and so were "incomplete" proteins. And were only any good if combined with animal proteins (eggs, meat, fish, dairy products). Is this no longer the case?

Not sure if I’ve already said but I’m currently training for paragliding
After flying sailplanes for 25 years then hang gliding for 3 years but then sailing kinda got in the way for 25 years so thought the best way back to flying, my first love, was paragliding
Gosh it’s so much more difficult when you get older but I’m doing my best and it’s just lovely to spend time on the hill in this lovely weather

Me and Mrs. Pony have seen enough of these cops programmes, and what usually happens is that the cops arrest someone carrying a knife, and then if they can persuade the CPS to run with it (they often won't) then some smart arse lawyer makes the judge feel sorry for them. Custodial sentences are rare.

I remember associating with some guys when I was in my teens, they weren't friends of mine, but loosely associated. One day they were all carrying these razor blades wrapped in tin foil, because there was 'gonna be some bother'. I was shocked and bewildered at this, it seems that some teenage boys have got this really sort of violent mindset, it's weird. Three motorbikes, a fridge, a chest freezer, and a shitload of tools, camping equipment and fishing and archery tackle leave little room for laundry. And it's also detached and bloody cold in winter. The clothes would take too long to dry and end up smelling like wet dog.

And I hand wash a fair bit. Why not? It's not much bother and quicker. I also use cold water where I can, it works fine.

i hand wash a lot of stuff. its cheaper and does a better job in general. especially whites. i just hang them on a horse or on a radiator etc.

My daughter used to do that, I had to strip and repaint several rads because of it. It damaged the enamel.

Nothing came out, just a lot of dry heaving.
At 7am I woke again for work and felt fine, just a bit tired.
Just been round my mate's tonight, and told him about it. And his wife reckons it's more likely a heart thing, and not a mouldy old out of date Rennie.
So when I got home, first thing I did (after a bowl of cornflakes) was to go on tinternet to look up heart attack symptoms. But after 10 minutes I got bored and came on here instead. I should probably take these things more seriously.

But seriously it might be worth just running it past a medical professional as it could have been signs of heart problems.
I have just undergone a raft of tests for possible long Covid, one being an Echocardiagram. I am due to see the Doc on 30/9 to discuss all the results.

get it checked out.
could be gastro reflux.... i get that. its the valve at top of stomach doesnt close right and leaks acid upwards. peptol will help as it foams up at top to cause a seal etc. an antacid by itself wont help, doc may put you on an acid pump inhibitor too, if you make too much acid.
it may well be caused by eating a difficult to digest meal just before lying down, and you may have produced a lot of acid, ad some leaked up..
worth getting checked tho. hopefully a script is all youll need. and dont eat right before bed

I USED TO GET A PAIN AT BREAST BONE.. it was even sore to touch and was the acid. i should have said its peptac liquid. i use the aniseed version. really hits spot. i get it on script.

good looks like its solved.. your valve gets tired with age apparently and doesnt seal properly. you eating late near bed time has set off the acid and its come out and burnt your tubes at that spot.

I have had long covid symptoms since feb, not had covid though, the onset was 5 days after my Pfizer booster.
AZ was administered for the first 2, not going anywhere near Pfizer or Moderna again unless I really have to.

Yes of course, but right now I have a more pressing concern: I've gone deaf in one ear! I wake each morning with my left ear completely blocked, and though it improves a bit when I'm up and about, I hear next to bugger all. And when my phone rings I can't so easily locate it. And music doesn't sound quite right - am I listening in mono?
Annoying that it's my left ear - my sitting position puts my stereo to my left and Anita to my right. Should be the other way round :(
Time for some earwax removal then. NHS don't seem to be arsed anymore, but there are plenty of private places, offering "micro suction" which is supposed to be better and safer. And they all seem to stay open quite late, which is handy. Prices average around £45 for one ear and £70 for two.
I'm the world's greatest at putting things off, but I think I'll make this a priority.
I had mine done by micro suction about 4 months ago. Used to have them done once a year at the surgery by the water pump method. I have Tinnitus that was made worse by Covid. I found the micro suction really loud and was concerned about it making my Tinnitus even worse but it doesn't seem to have. Very efficient cleaning method but mine was £70 for about 10 mins. Nice money if you can get it.

Yeah I was thinking that, a licence to print money. And I bet they make a bit more by selling the removed wax on to the people who make Marmite :( I would have to spend 3 hours up a ladder in all weathers for that kind of money.

A very shoddy way to treat loyal staff. Obviously there would be a duplication of staff, but there must be better ways to soften the blow. One can only hope the redundancy package is generous.

Having said that I don't take any vitamin supplements, so no doubt I will probably be deficient in something, and in that respect I envy Marmite fans their tolerance for things that just taste wrong.

If popping a pill seems too easy a way to good health, that's because it probably is. The efficacy of vit D pills has been brought into question, even when levels in the body appear normal, it seems the natural production of vit D itself only brings real benefits.

The idea does have some merit, but that word "mandatory" has to go - no one would get behind that. In any case, trust issues between Joe Public and the govt would always be a stumbling block.
Better perhaps would the provision of a multivitamin for primary school kids, like they used to do with milk. Free of charge, and also parents could choose to opt out.
Older kids and adults can fend for themselves, but hopefully young kids will stick with it as it has become a normal routine.
Yes, it was the word "mandatory" I objected to.
Childhood jabs for polio, diptheria, rubella, smallpox, TB, whooping cough etc. make perfect sense; though I think they should be highly recommended rather than mandatory.

I went to see the doc on Friday, who also spoke about this valve, told me to stop eating close to bedtime, cut down on fatty foods, avoid alcohol (I can do that), cut down on coffee (can't do that) and prescribed a 28 day course of a 'proton pump inhibitor' (PPI) called Omeprazole.
Now the whole of my stomach feels tender, but apparently this is a common side effect which should go away for a few days.

"In late 1996, the impression was allowed, or caused, to become prevalent that it had been somehow and somewhere decided to expand NATO up to Russia's borders. This despite the fact that no formal decision can be made before the alliance's next summit meeting, in June.
The timing of this revelation -- coinciding with the Presidential election and the pursuant changes in responsible personalities in Washington -- did not make it easy for the outsider to know how or where to insert a modest word of comment. Nor did the assurance given to the public that the decision, however preliminary, was irrevocable encourage outside opinion.
But something of the highest importance is at stake here. And perhaps it is not too late to advance a view that, I believe, is not only mine alone but is shared by a number of others with extensive and in most instances more recent experience in Russian matters. The view, bluntly stated, is that expanding NATO would be the most fateful error of American policy in the entire post-cold-war era.
Such a decision may be expected to inflame the nationalistic, anti-Western and militaristic tendencies in Russian opinion; to have an adverse effect on the development of Russian democracy; to restore the atmosphere of the cold war to East-West relations, and to impel Russian foreign policy in directions decidedly not to our liking. And, last but not least, it might make it much more difficult, if not impossible, to secure the Russian Duma's ratification of the Start II agreement and to achieve further reductions of nuclear weaponry.
It is, of course, unfortunate that Russia should be confronted with such a challenge at a time when its executive power is in a state of high uncertainty and near-paralysis. And it is doubly unfortunate considering the total lack of any necessity for this move. Why, with all the hopeful possibilities engendered by the end of the cold war, should East-West relations become centered on the question of who would be allied with whom and, by implication, against whom in some fanciful, totally unforeseeable and most improbable future military conflict?
I am aware, of course, that NATO is conducting talks with the Russian authorities in hopes of making the idea of expansion tolerable and palatable to Russia. One can, in the existing circumstances, only wish these efforts success. But anyone who gives serious attention to the Russian press cannot fail to note that neither the public nor the Government is waiting for the proposed expansion to occur before reacting to it.
Russians are little impressed with American assurances that it reflects no hostile intentions. They would see their prestige (always uppermost in the Russian mind) and their security interests as adversely affected. They would, of course, have no choice but to accept expansion as a military fait accompli. But they would continue to regard it as a rebuff by the West and would likely look elsewhere for guarantees of a secure and hopeful future for themselves.
It will obviously not be easy to change a decision already made or tacitly accepted by the alliance's 16 member countries. But there are a few intervening months before the decision is to be made final; perhaps this period can be used to alter the proposed expansion in ways that would mitigate the unhappy effects it is already having on Russian opinion and policy."

As he listed the reasons why Ukraine's counter-offensive is proving to be successful, though, he inadvertently thanked Mr Putin, before quickly correcting himself and thanking Mr Zelenskyy.

"Thanks also, of course, to the inspirational leadership of Vladimir Putin."
