How much of that is left? We still have most of the old houses and shops, but almost all the factory buildings are gone.

Looks like a typical post war layout plus some bungalows for the old folk, although there's a bit more variation in the building design than you sometimes see in the larger, cheaper estates, indicating a bit of civic pride.

Love that type of house, so much character. But I imagine they could make 4 flats per house, so you know parking's going to be a real arse.

Feeling sorry for myself right now.

Just got back from the hospital where a decent-sized portion of my nose has been removed, and the skin replaced by a patch harvested from under my ear - not nearly as much fun as it sounds. Five injections of local into my neck, and another seven into my nose, with half of the stuff going down my throat, numbing it so I couldn't swallow.

I didn't think an eye could water so much, and by the time they'd finished my eyes were almost glued shut by half-dried tears.

Still, I got two free brews and a biscuit, and a day off work. Speaking of which, I don't know how I'm gonna keep these dressings clean and attached for a week, doing what I do.

I know that compared to the proper surgery some folk on here endure my "ordeal" is a piece of piss, but I never said I was tough...and to add insult to injury, when I look in the mirror it looks like bugger all :(

Thanks fellers, for your advice - sounds good, but can't do that just now, I'd be letting folk down. BUT... it is all going to change, as I'm sick of having the disadvantages of self-employed (no sick or holiday pay) without the advantages (working to my own schedule at my own pace). It's like I have a boss all over again. Unless I can completely fill my week I barely make minimum wage, and filling my week means no crap weather, no injury or sickness, no non-delivery of product, and definitely no holidays :(

The price of the 8-yarder skip on my drive (which I pay for) and materials costs (which I also provide) have all gone up 30% or more this last year, while fitters' rates are virtually unchanged. I foresee a fitters revolt in the coming weeks, and I won't mind being at the front of it, because life's too short to be fretting about shit like this.

Sorry for boring you with this, I'm just a bit fed up right now.

i know what you mean steve. i was self employed in trade myself and it can end up being pointless when a few things go agin you, and you just get to paying out more than you take in, even doing 14 hr shifts.. as for skips; yes i was shocked to see current prices. i need one but its too much money.

8 yarder I use went up last Jan from £210 to £240, and went up again last month to £265. And they take it away after 3 weeks, full or not. My advice would be to pile it up in the garden for a rubbish removal firm to take away. Prob less than £100 that way.

Macca

Maybe we should start a business renting skips? Got to be some space in the market if the prices are so high.

I mean once you've bought your skips and paid back for them after that it's all profit. And a skip must last years before you have to replace it.

This may end up being a ramble so apologies in advance... I lost my Mum before Christmas (when I say “lost”, I don’t mean she slipped down the back of the sofa, she passed away) but one of the positives is that me and my (younger) sister who had drifted apart are back in touch. We were reminiscing about our childhood, and one of the things we remembered was when I was about 11 or 12 my mum and dad (who were rather bohemian) used to run a craft stall on Saturdays in the cloisters at St Andrews Hall in Norwich. We used to get bored...

So money was tight, but the nearby “Cinema City” used to show old films for next to nothing, so I’d drag her there to see “Jason and the Argonauts”, “Great Expectations” and other classics.

Another very cheap waste of time not far away was the Bridewell Museum, and I remembered three things from last going there about 40 years ago. A huge model plane from the First World War (I suspect it was built by Boulton and Paul, a Norwich engineering firm pressed into aircraft manufacturing) a large collection of old shoes (Norwich being at the pinnacle of shoe manufacture for centuries) and a huge case of stuffed canaries. (As in taxidermy of little yellow birds.)

Well, my kids, now roughly the same age as we would have been at the time decided after this dinner table conversation that they would like to go. So today, it being half-term, we trundled up the A140 and spent a couple of hours wandering around what is now called The Museum of Norwich at The Bridewell and it was thoroughly enjoyable, for them too!

I was curious if the items I remembered would still be there, and was very pleased to find the model WW1 aircraft first, although a bit like Wagon Wheels, it was half the size I remembered it being in about 1980... plenty of shoes on display, too. And finally, a handful of stuffed canaries in the Norwich City FC display at the end of the tour (and yes, the irony of the Canaries being stuffed isn’t lost...)

Finally to the point(?) of my post... When I used to take my sister 40 years ago, admission for a child was 5p. Today, a child ticket was £6.20... According to an inflation calculator, the equivalent price today should be 23p - so it’s time to stop moaning about the price of gas, petrol and electricity and seriously question the robbing bastards in the museum services! I’m starting a petition and writing a very strongly worded letter...

Cheers Alan, but you're too kind - I think you actually mean "lock up your Grannies":wheniwasaboy: You're probably right about the handsome bit though, the more of my face they remove, the better looking I'll be :)

"When the Levee Breaks" was already on my radar since you played us some at Tipton Manor, but the prices are a bit  Then I got the chance of a new copy at a great discount, thanks to a fellow forum member who'd ended up with a spare copy. A quality album it is.

How's it going?

Bit knackered due to not getting a good night's sleep - nose not a problem in bed, as it's had 63 years of my farts so it's a tough old thing. But the patch behind my ear, where they took some skin for a graft, doesn't like resting on the pillow.

Working is pretty much normal, except that whenever I bend down to tie my laces or something, my nose throbs in tune with my pulse. Which is a bit shit. Also the right nostril is so swollen I can't get my little finger up there. I'll have to start blowing my nose, like a posh person...

Otherwise all good! Customers are providing sympathy biscuits with my brew, which is nice :)

Kids are so expensive these days, I couldn't afford one. Time was you could kick them out of the house in the morning, and off they'd go to the woods to try out their latest home-made weapons. These days you have to take them somewhere, somewhere that costs.

Having said that, £6.20 for a child ticket is just wrong. It would be acceptable if you were able to leave the kids there for the day while you go off drinking beer, but I bet you're supposed to stay with them, and pay even more for the privilege.

The Harris museum in Preston was always free, and probably still is. But then they won't have a box of dead canaries, and maintaining them won't be cheep [groan].

Sorry to hear about your mum Alex, but good that you and your sister have re-connected. Same thing happened with me and my brother after my mum's passing. That was 20 years ago and we are still in regular touch with each other.

Putin knows exactly what he is doing.

Nobody will do anything about his imperialistic stunts, all you'll get is a load of hot air and empty rhetoric from Boris and the rest including US.

He could hold the whole of western Europe to ransom, including us, under threat of nuclear attack and nobody would resist. The yanks would do nothing useful, they might make things worse though.

The Ukrainian name is Ки́їв, written in the Ukrainian Cyrillic alphabet, and usually rendered in Latin letters (or romanized) as Kyiv. Before standardization of the alphabet in the early 20th century, the name was also spelled Кыѣвъ, Киѣвъ, or Кіѣвъ with the now-obsolete letter yat.

But spoken in Russian, Kiev sounds more like “Key-EV.” But at times, it sounded more like “keev,” with the long “ee” pronounced as a single syllable.

I was right. Loads of indignant waffle from House of Commons. Nothing they can do though, any sanctions will be maneuvered around by Russia.

Moldova may well be on Putin's wish list after Ukraine. After that, we need to watch what the US may do if Lithuania are threatened. They are NATO! Could go very badly indeed.

Kyiv might be Ukranian but we're British so it's 'Kiev' like it's always been. We're don't say 'I'm off for a long weekend in Roma' do we?

Like Churchill said re Istanbul/Constatinople, ''I do not consider that names that have been familiar for generations in England should be altered to study the whims of foreigners living in those parts.”

or AP Herbert: ''Every Englishman is born with the inalienable right to pronounce foreign words any way he pleases”

I don't know, thieves can sometimes be quite discerning. A work colleague once told me his car was broken into while visiting his girlfriend, and they'd made off with about 30 albums he had left in the boot. but they left behind his copy of "Living in the Material World" by George Harrison. Being "mad" doesn't exclude one from pursuing a "career in extortion, corruption and self aggrandisement" neither does being a politician exclude madmen/women".

I would tend to agree with your point about any intervention in another country since WW2 (by any other country/countries) - it doesn't stop with the Middle East, just think Afghanistan, Tibet etc. Only one that I can think of as being justified, off the top of my head, would be the former Yugoslavia.

I think that what makes Putin different and therefore being referred to as "mad" is his willingness to make veiled threats about the use of nuclear weapons.

I don't know, the US rains shit upon the middle east for decades, getting rid of dictators with the promise of democracy, which never comes, only chaos and destruction, Iraq, Libya, even the 20 yr occupation of Afghanistan couldn't establish democracy or any sort of functioning state, as soon as they depart, the Taliban just steps in. It seems once this chaos comes close to home, we take more notice. Russia of course also occupied Afghanistan, in an even more bonkers project, to turn the natives into communists, but they just ended up torching entire villages! How either country think they have right to do this is beyond me. Putin is no 'madder' than Kissinger, Bush, the Clintons, whoever. West gets involved in the Middle East because of the oil, not because they're crazy.

Don't buy the idea that Putin/Russians are worried about NATO. As if NATO would ever invade Russia. It's strictly a defensive alliance. Plus Russia has nuclear weapons in any case so they're untouchable.

If they were in the slightest bit worried about NATO attacking them they wouldn't have gone into Ukraine would they?

well 1990 was about liberating Kuwait (well their oil anyway) and 2004 was about taking control of the world's second largest oil reserve away from a loose cannon.
Given oil is absolutely fundamental to our civilisation that's not a crazy thing to do. Whether it's 'right' or not is a whole different argument.

Nobody would give a toss what they were doing in the middle east if it wasn't for the oil. They'd be left to their own devices. A Kurdish bloke said to me 'We will never have peace as long as there is oil.'

TBH Macca, I'd say the death of over 100,000 civilians in the first Iraq/US war was pretty crazy, getting rid of Saddam and Gadaffi was pretty crazy, seeing as the result of that was to create chaos, into which stepped extremists. Almost every US military intervention creates instability, but they keep on doing it, again and again! With Vietnam being the reference, they just bombed the shit out of that country, people need to get a perspective on the US, they are war mongering bastards, the only country to ever use that disgusting weapon, the h bomb.

bags are a pain in the arse, that's why. You need to hoover, bag is full, you used the last one, now you've got to search out some place that sells the exact type of bag, go there, pay money for them...

Yeah no different performance to my nan's hoover - that was a long metal cylinder which weighed half a metric tonne and was made in about 1950, but it would suck the paint off the skirting board if you let it.

For work I have a budget Henry-type hoover, made by Titan and sells at Screwfix for forty quid. Works a treat, but does use bags (about a tenner for 5, also sold at Screwfix). The bags do last a long time though.

If you stick the hose in t'other hole it blows like a good 'un, which may be handy for something.

Hey I'm not a man who fixes stuff, I'm shit at it. I just fit windows and doors, everything else I'm just winging it  And did I mention our collection of hoovers? :)

No-one in our house was into it. My dad wouldn't be home from work yet, my brothers would be at cubs and the only thing my mother ever watched was Coronation Street, and maybe This Is Your Life if it was someone she liked. We used to dread that as she'd insist on turning the channel over to see who it was and we'd pray it was no-one she was bothered about, or we'd be stuck with it.

Just hearing that Secret Army theme tune and seeing the opening credits again sparked a Pavlovian reaction in me. 'Oh no. Got to do my homework.'

Russia Today has had its licence to broadcast in the UK revoked with immediate effect after watchdog Ofcom said it did not consider the channel "fit and proper" or a "responsible broadcaster".

The media regulator said that it had taken into account "a number of factors" including the fact that the news channel was funded by the Russian state "which has recently invaded a neigbouring sovereign country".

Ofcom also cited new laws in Russia "which effectively criminalise any independent journalism that departs from the Russian state's own news narrative, in particular in relation to the invasion of Ukraine".

"We consider that given these constraints it appears impossible for RT to comply with the due impartiality rules of our Broadcasting Code in the circumstances," the regulator added.

RT responded to the decision by saying Ofcom had shown itself to be "nothing more than a tool of government, bending to its media-suppressing will".

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said: "This is a continuation of the madness which is going on in America and Europe - it is anti-Russian madness.

"This is yet another step that crudely limits freedom of speech."

Microplastic pollution has been detected in human blood for the first time, with scientists finding the tiny particles in almost 80% of the people tested.

The discovery shows the particles can travel around the body and may lodge in organs. The impact on health is as yet unknown. But researchers are concerned as*microplastics cause damage to human cells*in the laboratory and*air pollution particles*are already known to enter the body and cause millions of early deaths a year.

Wind turbines are slow moving, but they generate electricity. There is no real reason why water wheels cannot be used to generate electricity for domestic use, as long as there is not a need for a lot of power (say < 20kW): https://www.askaprepper.com/homemade-water-wheel-electric-generator/,

On the other hand nationalisation can allow a lessez fair attitude and a lack of investment.

A "game-changing" antibiotic could save millions of lives worldwide from drug-resistant superbugs, a new study suggests.

The breakthrough, made by UK scientists, involved the development of new versions of the molecule teixobactin, which is thought to be capable of killing bacteria without damaging the tissue of the mammals it was tested on.

A team of researchers was able to use it to successfully eradicate methicillin-resistant staphylococcus aureus - a so-called superbug known as MRSA, which is resistant to several widely used antibiotics - in a study on mice.

Teixobactin was first hailed as a "game-changing" antibiotic in 2015, but the new project developed "synthetic" classes of the drug, according to scientists.

Because the synthetic versions can be kept at room temperature global distribution of the drug is much easier.

In 2019, more than 1.2 million people died from antibiotic-resistant bacterial infections, according to a January 2021 study in The Lancet.

 You'll have to enlighten me, I don't watch Nickelodeon :)

Edit: no need, just came to me. At times like this my failing memory worries me. But if I give it ten minutes I won't remember what I was worrying about...

it's a book, radio series, TV series and I think a film :)

Frankie and Benji were actually two hyper intelligent pan galactic beings who took on the form of mice to control /observe the earth (which was really a computer program designed to find the ultimate question to which the answer was 42)

EDIT - I'm a bit of a nerd, I also have original radio series on BBC cassettes and LP records :)

never heard the radio show.

Read the book and saw the series many years ago, never saw the film - film trailers tend to show the best bits, and they were grim enough, so didn't bother.

IIRC the trailer showed the one funny bit in the entire film, as they so often do.

What they did was take out everything from the book that made it funny, then added a load of stuff that isn't funny at all. Similar to what the BBC do when they get a show that becomes popular. Because they don't understand the reasons why the show got popular in the first place.

BBC have a history of hitting upon something that proves popular, then keep battering the formula long after it's died. Examples being Are You Being Served, Last of the Summer Wine and Silent Witness.

They were all pretty bad to begin with, although 'Are You Being Served?' is like Shakespeare compared to modern stuff.

I was thinking Red Dwarf, Royle Family and Fools and Horses. They gave Fools and Horses a right beating, buried it, and then dug it up and kicked it about a bit more.

My mate's son has been seeing a Russian girl (from St. Petersburg) for a couple of years, they live together in London. She is currently not on speaking terms with her parents back home, who don't believe a word of it. They're convinced she is being brainwashed and should never have gone to England.

Normal people like you or me stay at a hotel we pretty much never order room service because we know from experience that it's usually crap and it's always hideously expensive.

So why is it in films/tv that the spy, or witness or whatever can't wait to get on the blower and order it? Even though they've been told 'Don't open the door to anyone'

It's absolutely guaranteed that the room service bloke will be an assassin in disguise, or will have put a bomb in the trolley, or some other ruse.

Just send one of the FBI agents or whatever out to get some KFC or something. Or better still get them to put you up in a military base or a police station or anywhere that the general public can't just wander in and out of at will. Really not hard.

Pigmy Pony

The spy/witness doesn't even need to order room service, it will come anyway. And he will open the door to tell the incompetent fool. In person, as that is the only way they will learn.

Not really worth them assigning anyone to begin with really.

of course the local council want to pull it down so he's bought all the properties surrounding it so the bulldozers can't get to it.

Funny how local councils are shit hot when it comes to this sort of thing but they struggle to keep the streets clean and in a good state of repair.

You can't even see it from the street. Here they love to rip down beautiful or interesting Victorian buildings and replace them with total eyesores that look even worse after a couple of years due to the shoddy materials they use. No-one on local councils seems bothered about that.

I think he just forgot to slip a plain brown envelope to someone.

Looking like the hospital/ambulance system in this country(England in particular) is now not fit for purpose with people waiting 48 hrs to be seen properly.

https://www.theguardian.com/society/2022/apr/10/appalling-waits-for-ambulances-in-england-leaving-lives-at-risk

Patients with life-threatening conditions such as heart attacks and strokes are having to wait far too long for emergency care, she said, and vulnerable older people are in some cases spending all night on the floor at home after falling.

The rapidly escalating crisis is being caused by soaring demand, enormous staff shortages in the NHS and social care that have been worsened by Covid-related absences, and a drastic shortfall of hospital and care home beds.

“The true barrier to tackling this crisis is political unwillingness,” Henderson said. “The current situation is breaking the workforce and breaking our hearts.”

Hospitals are facing record demand from patients coming forward after two years of the pandemic, while struggling to discharge patients because of the crisis in social care.

As a result, Henderson said, doctors are struggling to find any space for patients arriving at A&E. That is causing record delays in ambulances handing over patients, which is leading to waits of up to 22 hours for 999 callers.........

No, neither am I. Not been to any that ended badly though except one where the cops turned up, can't recall why now. A long time ago in Liverpool.

Been to dozens in my early years, but I can only think of three that ended badly(ish).

One where I tried to open a beer bottle with my teeth (which I've mentioned before). That ended in A&E getting stitches. One where we all got ejected after someone tried to start a fire in the garden with one of the sofa cushions. And one where some guy thought he could intimidate me with his 6'3". I set him straight there, but got chucked out by an off-duty copper.

Mostly parties were just under-attended non events, and none of them even register on the shame-scale compared to Boris and his cronies.

I don't understand who they have advising them. I mean first you have those two idiots advising May to call a snap election when it was obvious to any fool that it was a bad time. Then you've got these 'get togethers' at No 10 and now it's Sunak's wife doing tax avoidance.

Why are the advisors not saying 'There's a lockdown on Mr J having a birthday bash is not a good move'. Or 'Tax avoidance looks bad especially when your married to the Chancellor. Just pay the fucking tax, you're loaded anyway so what does it matter?'

Or maybe they do say that and they just ignore them? I really don't know.

I've researched this and the answer is 41.1%. But we have no idea what these kids have to go through emotionally, so shouldn't judge. For example, a huge 1% of these addicts told us their problems began when they were told they couldn't change their yacht just because it was moored in the wrong place.
