You'll get there pal just you see, that mobile of yours will start getting harder to see clearly and reading matter will start blurring! :lol:
And when it goes, it goes fast. One day you find that you can't read the writing on the spines on your albums and CDs and that's it. Even though it was no problem the day before.

Lol - no doubt, but at what age, I wonder? None of that going on yet, even at 55...
When Del went to the opticians, just before lockdown, to get a new pair of specs (frames plus lenses), she was given a sheet of laminated paper, with (I think) five paragraphs of text on it, in varying sizes, from biggest to smallest, and I tried it and managed to successfully read all but the last one, which was pretty tiny!
The only difference I've noticed in my eyesight, since say 15 years ago, is that I find it harder to read now in low-light conditions, but as long as the light's good enough, there's no problem:)
Must've been all those carrots I ate when I was young!:D

UGH...
So as long as you get the right frames to suit your head size and face shape, it can look quite distinctive:)

That's me too. I can read most things in daylight, but with artificial light I'm screwed. During the winter months my A-Z in the car is not worth bothering with.

yup although my distance isnt good enough legally without glasses for driving i dont agree as i can read signs and plates ok, but still wear thyem to be safe. i need reading specs tho and another set for pc

An A-Z is a must for serious drivers. A sat-nav will get you the bulk of the journey, but it's that last half mile they cock up and you find yourself the wrong side of a block or down a little country lane cu-de-sac!

Yeah, defo, especially the last bit, although you can take some steps when you're very young to protect your eyesight, by not straining your eyes trying to read things in poor light conditions, and just generally eating well and being healthy.
Same applies with your hearing... Even at a young age, I was always protective of my hearing, and so when going to really loud gigs, I'd always put ear plugs in at some point, just to 'give them a rest', and never listened to music loudly on headphones, plus I've been fortunate never to work in excessively noisy environments, all of which can lead to tinnitus.
Consequently, my hearing is as good (probably better) than my eyesight, but that doesn't stop me from getting 'earache' from Del when she WANTS, or DOESN'T want, something!:D

My postcode is in my sat-nav as the home setting, but it always wants to take me the other side of the block.
Lol - NEVER rely 100% on a sat-nav, as it's almost always guaranteed to end in a tale of woe! Does no-one use maps anymore?:)
On long journeys, to somewhere we've never been before, our default 'guidance system' is still a detailed (up to date road map), as at least you know then generally where you are, because you can SEE it, unlike with many navs, and which make you lazy.
The sat-nav only gets used if we get lost and/or can't find the road sign we're looking for, and get us back on our road, which can be invaluable when driving abroad!:cool:

I bought a touring map of Scotland at the Green Welly Stop, and it was our 'go to' for the whole week. I love maps. If I had my way I'd wallpaper the lounge in Ordnance Surveys, but Anita wouldn't go for it. Women are funny that way :(
Yup, but it's good to use your brain sometimes too, as accurate map-reading is a skill.
Del's really good at reading them, which is handy with her often being 'co-pilot':)

yup if you have a co that can read a map, its handy.. of course when using a sat nav, you have to qualify any turns as 'logical' before making them.

I prefer it that way anyway. I like to watch the scenery go by. Especially going thru Glen Coe, and along the old military road to "Rest and be Thankful" :)

Absolutely. Local knowledge trumps Sat Nav every time. Just try using it for a local journey you know well, see what happens.

You want to be careful with that. The area where my wife’s sister lives in the USA had a spate of cars being stolen a few years back, then the miscreants would use the car’s Satnav to take them to ‘the programmed ‘home’ location and rob the place.
As a result, her husband changed the ‘home’ location in both their cars to the very large police station that was around a quarter of a mile from them!

Lol... Just a rather novel idea, I thought, of hanging up old pics of the 'birthday boy', with illuminated pegs, which as you can see at night look quite striking:)
However, the temporary erection of a gazebo, in order to facilitate the party, has made us more determined to have a proper one permanently installed, as it makes for a really nice seating area in the summer.
And there's plenty of room... Even with that and the bouncy castle (which was huge) installed on the lawn, there's was still LOADS of room left for folks to mingle. Don't think I could ever cope without having a large outdoor space to enjoy in the nice weather!:cool:
If the weather is half-decent over Christmas [which often it is, as the really bad weather doesn't usually kick in until January/Feb], we might get the crew round again, and this time just light a bigger fire!:D

hope it turns out well geoff. sons dog had cancer for several years, before she died recently, so often they can be benign. it can become expensive alas..

The dog's lumps are small, so I don't envisage problems after they are excised. It's my usual vet, but prices seem to have grown wildly. The fifteen minute consultation cost me nearly ninety quid, never mind the price of the still to be paid for surgery. No more pets for me after this one, that's for sure.

Pooch goes to the vet tomorrow at 8.30am for surgery to remove two small lumps under her skin. They could potentially be tumours, cancerous or otherwise. You would not believe how much this is going to cost!!
Picked up Coco the mutt around 4pm. She's unsettled and unhappy, hopefully she'll feel less distressed tomorrow. Surgery went OK, wait for pathology results on the removed lumps now.

There are only four presenters worth listening to on Radio 2: Jeremy Vine, Bob Harris (as, music-wise he's the closest we've got now to John Peel), Steve Wright and Trevor Nelson. The rest are anodyne cardboard cutouts!
Personally, as bad as it can be, if I'm in the car and listening to the radio instead of CD, then I prefer having Radio 1 on, as occasionally it throws up a few gems, in terms of new music, as unlike some folk here (lol) I like discovering new music, especially the best of the young new indie bands.
The problem with R2, and it has many problems, is that you never (or rarely) hear any new music... And the station hasn't had a decent presenter for the breakfast show since the departure of Chris Evans... As much as he can be an annoying PITA, at least he had a PERSONALITY!!

Jesus - no, surely not! Yes on Bob Harris and Trevor Nelson but Jeremy Vine is just an annoying cretin who seems to think it's amusing to pretend he doesn't know anything about the subject under discussion just to get arise out of his (largely idiot) callers. As for Steve Wright, he's still doing the same scripted, pathetic show he has been for the last thirty years and he should have been put out to pasture long ago. Anyone who stands in for him makes the show far better, IMHO. I'd love someone like Craig Charles to take over his slot permanently.
Frankly the only people I consider worth listening to on Radio 2 these days, in addition to Bob Harris and Trevor Nelson, are Ken Bruce, Jo Whiley and Johnny Walker. I don't actually mind Sara Cox, with the exception of the predictable 1980s Heart Radio-style music she plays. Don't get me started on Zoe Ball or that cretin Rylan...

Surely the whole purpose of listening to the radio is to hear music? Not some idiot presenter waffling on about nothing or Joe Punter calling in to tell us he's driving down to Worthing for a birthday party. Nobody cares!

I think R2 presenters (like any other employees) do as their told. Sara Cox used to be really good imo, when she was able to talk about important topics like her back fat, and running out of bog roll and having to "dab her flower" with a postage stamp size bit. Things change, and not usually for the better. Lauren Laverne used to have a great North east accent which I could listen to all day, all but gone now :(

As for Steve Wright, he's still doing the same scripted, pathetic show he has been for the last thirty years and he should have been put out to pasture long ago. I quite like Jeremy Vine, as I also watch him on 'Eggheads'. I take your point about him, but for me he's just a good presenter, and I enjoy some of the discussions on his show.
And Steve Wright I like for reasons of nostalgia, as I grew up with him in the late 70s and 80s, with 'Mr Angry' and 'The Newsagesnt', etc. Ken Bruce is a nice guy, but a bit boring, ditto Johnny Walker. I'd also throw in Tony Blackburn too, for nostalgia reasons. Good shout on Craig Charles, yup forgot about him. Yeah, I guess those trainers could look quite cute with her dresses, but they wouldn't be long, because as you know she's tiny and doesn't suit long dresses, so they'd be mini or knee-length ones, mostly in pastel colours, and of course pink!

What's this all about? Cleaned out the fridge last week, needed doing. When I finished it was absolutely spotless, looked like brand new.
Just gone in there to get the milk out and there's a big stain right on the bottom where that glass thing goes that you keep lettuce in and that.
All that has been in the fridge since I cleaned it is a couple of pints of milk, half a pound of butter which is unused and still wrapped, a block of cheese which is wrapped in clingfilm and inside a plastic bag, and a steak that was also double wrapped and only in there for a couple of hours before I ate it. So where can this big stain suddenly appear from? It's bullshit.

If the small drain in the collector tray at the bottom of the fridge is blocked (usually with food products!), the resultant condensation will collect in the bottom of the fridge...:D

Bought a brand new fridge for an elderly neighbour years ago who had the same problem within a few weeks.... On inspection, discovered that the hole in the bottom of the collection tray hadn't been punched out at the manufacturing stage!!! Same result though....

You are right its always important to keep any drain holes well cleaned out ...if you fancy rather more work have a look at the back of the fridge the drain hole will lead to a tube ...
Found the drain hole but what now? Does it come out? I did think about getting a screwdriver in there but I don't want to break it.

Usually clear it with a cocktail stick or the narrow end of a cable tie (or anything softish). Try pulling any debris out, rather than pushing it through if you can. But eventually just be sure that the hole is clear to drain away.

Geoff's idea of pipecleaner may work, but you'll maybe push the debris further down the drain tube.....okay if you're satisfied that it's completely clear to the end.
No I don't ever recall the fridge being defrosted, cleaned, drained or anything. I recall my mother doing washing, ironing and hoovering up, but not cleaning the fridge. I think they only had 2 fridges in the 18 years I lived there. They had a new kitchen in about 1982 so the fridge changed once in almost two decades.
The freezer is still going now and that dates from about 1976. Don't recall that ever being defrosted either.

I once tried to clear the ice from my chest freezer by hacking at it with a chisel. Worked a treat - after a brief hissing sound the freezer defrosted itself :)
pull the fridge out from the wall - the drain pipe will exit in to a tray which sits on top of the compressor (heat from compressor is supposed to evaporate the fridge condensate and that tray can get disgusting).
I have use a long wire and a spray cleaner from inside the fridge to clear the drain pipe on our fridge, it can be quite worrying what grows there :eek:

The building I used to work in had a stairwell that would have a different evocative smell almost every day. Various smells that would rotate.
One day it might smell like a corridor in an fancy American hotel. If you've stayed in one you know that smell. The next day it would smell like the school my mother taught at in the 1970s. Chalk and disinfectant. Then it would smell like rain on warm concrete. Some days there was no smell at all. I've never been able to account for this.

I was incorrect in stating "some companies" want to stipulate working-at-home conditions. At the moment it is just Hammersmith and Fulham council who are want to introduce a smoking ban when at a computer whilst working at home.

I first came across toilets like that in Japan. The Japanese go for that sort of thing.
The first thing I disabled was the seat heating - horrible; just like someone has used it immediately before you. The bidet function is fine - if you like to have a jet of water squirted up your backside.
Not sure about the heated seat myself - I always find heated seats in cars feel rather strange at first.

I see the panic buying has taken a grip. Times for booking of available grocery home delivery slots have stretched out considerably, from a day or so to weeks now, if you can find one. It varies from one supplier to another and no doubt there will be regional differences.
Good job I saw this coming (again) and have always maintained a decent stock of essentials. Something I have habitually done and not prompted by the beginnings of the Covid scare in February.
I never had any problem getting stuff in the last 'panic buying' spree. The corner shop never ran out of bog roll or anything else. It's just the panic-buying people don't go there because they don't want to pay a few extra pence compared to the supermarket price.
All blown out of proportion by the media and then that sets more idiots off out to panic-buy. Self-fulfilling prophecy.
If I had a big surplus of something I'd just get a story placed in the media about how there is a shortage of it. Hey presto not only are people climbing over each other to get to it, they're happy to pay a ludicrous premium for it too.

Did visit a friend a few weeks ago, and had a few visit me. Went up Liverpool in June. There's no-where near me that does a 'lovely' pub lunch. It's a two mile walk to get somewhere even half-decent for that. If you want a decent steak that's 7 miles away.
I've always regarded any need to leave the house as either an absolute necessity or a failure of planning.
i dont have to got out for stuff. thats what delivery vans are for. ordered some beer the other day, and some dried fruits and veg etc. they will appear sometime along with my pasta meals(today hopefully) and frozen stuff next week. why sould i go and take another mans job eh;)

checking supplies there, im pretty well stocked on essentials etc. Both freezers are near full as is fridge.. ive enough flour, yeast and things for baking etc to last 6 months. enough cleaning stuff etc so im ok up to a point if it gets dodgy again. My area has been in a watchlist, as has the whole region, although im guessing the unis and colleges being back has caused much of the increases. my friend at hospital says its been getting a bit busier there too.

Accrington bricks aren't too bad, quite smooth. Concrete blocks are the ones to avoid. And make sure they are free of mortar, that stuff causes severe ring-sting :(

When me and my mate were doing bar work in a town pub in 1980, we always had the two top scores on their Asteroids game. But the one I excelled at (a couple of years earlier) was called "Breakout", I think.
Asteroids was rock hard. I could play all day on the Atari version without losing a life but the proper arcade version was much harder. Hit that thrust button by accident and that was it, you were finished. And those alien saucers never missed.

I bought a quite pricey Denon as my first DVD player back in 2001, got a cheapo Pioneer a couple of years later, was amazed at how much better it was. Sold the Denon to a mate and it's still going strong, gets used every day.
Yeah, good stuff. I reckon this Panny is where it's at picture-wise right now. Multiple forms of connectivity. uber-build quality, apps, etc, mean jack shit to me. All that matters is the audio and visual performance with 4K UHD discs, so this ticks all the right boxes - BIGTIME...:exactly:
Next up, a Dolby Atmos-compatible home-cinema amp, and more speakers!:D

My blu ray player is Panasonic, but it's about 4 years old now. Probably not quite good enough for my LG OLED telly, and I can't summon the enthusiasm to replace it. Just laziness I guess. The last blu ray disc I bought was "Once upon a Time in Hollywood", it was months before I got round to watching it, then 5 minutes later it was on Sky Movies.
The problem is, my armchair is here, and the discs are all the way over there. Strange how I'm happy to get up every 20 minutes to turn a record over, but for viewing I just want to press buttons.
Also the picture is a bit crap when everything is going through my ancient Sony AV receiver, so just using telly sound at the mo. Everything changes so quickly, but I will have to address this - Anita misses the big bangs (this is where you jump in, Marco) :eyebrows:

But are you sure that your optical is just carrying the audio? I'd always assumed that the optical and HDMI outs from the telly carried sound and picture. This way sound and vision was always in synch. maybe I was just being thick - when it came to A/V i just moved wires and switches about till something happened, then left it alone. A case of "well it's working, but I've no idea why"...
Hdmi does audio, video in sync. Before that you needed to use an audio cable and video. Best bet was optical audio and a dvi plug to keep sync
But are you sure that your optical is just carrying the audio?...

Previously used a Sony 7 channel HT receiver for sound -coax from cable box into the receiver for sound and scart from cable box into telly for picture. No sound sync issues
Then telly and cable box got upgraded so couldn't do that anymore as no scart outputs or inputs - The bloke in Richer Sounds where I got the new telly told me to use optical from telly into a DAC. Since I had an amp with built in DAC lying about doing nothing it was a cheap and easy solution, £7 for the optical cable and Bob's your mother's brother.
I've also got an optical cable that has a DAC built into it so I can use an amp that doesn't have a DAC in it. But that's still in it's box, never tried it. Think that was only a tenner.

Don't get it... I'm doing exactly the same as you, with very similar gear, hooked up via HDMI, (Monoprice 4K compatible cables) and I've got the Odeon in my living room!

Cables may not be of right spec. Maybe get better ones(not Ness dearer)
Some have wrong spec, and swapping in a different cable fixes it.

Run an optical from TV into the Sony amp apropos achieving surround sound without running picture signal through the amplifier.
Does the optical not carry picture then? If not, that could the answer :)

No, no picture, just sound. Cost you about £8 for the cable.

Cheers Martin, I think you may have the solution there. I think I have an optical lead knocking around, I'll have a search tonight. Or get one off th'Amazon :)

Ok then, it's what got Scooby Doo et al to their adventures, a rather psychedelic VW microbus iirc, and was almost as cool as the "A Teams" van.
This one was a Vauxhall Vivaro Turbo so I guess Freddie must have traded in the VW.
It's a long way to the nearest amusement park, abandoned or otherwise, so don't know what they were doing round here.
