The ASA introduced its ban two months ago because it found some portrayals could play a part in "limiting people's potential".

Fuck.

Off.

Hopefully Brexit is just the beginning of rolling back the tide on this bullshit. All the normal people have had enough, our tolerance is running out.

Here we go, more snowflake action. I swear people go round lookling for things to be offended at. Bunch of tossers.

https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-49332640

Before long it'll be illegal to call them snowflakes. You'll probably get arrested for holding a door open for a woman, good job nobody doffs a hat these days, as that would be regarded as insulting.

They need a wake up call, and a damned good SLAP!!!:punch::punch:

What people fail to recognise is that stereotyping didn't create itself. Like it or not, it generally derives from traits or perceptions based somewhere in reality. Seems folk just can't cope with that.

Modern stereotyping was created to be sold for profit. Most of them may have had a basis in fact once, but many didnt. Take pink and blue... That was designed to sell twice as many items to parents. Pink was always a masculine colour, but it was changed, in early 20th c.... Before the colour con, parents lust put baby no 2 in baby no1's baby clothes irrellevent of sex and no one thought it odd.
Most girls at a young age prefer steel blue colours, and boys often like dolls etc.

as to those ads, the second one is clearly stereotyping women as put upon and lacking drive etc. The first is more a joke, but it does suggest men are uselss at looking after kids.

after saying that, banning them is out of order. they are no worse than plenty others, and some of the worst are anti men tbh these days.

Had my mc refresher on Monday and absolutely loved it.... as they say it's like 'riding a bike'

I guess you don't really forget things but my instructor was so good and gave me loads of pointers and really made me feel confident again.. we did loads of slow speed stuff in an empty car park which was fun before going out on the road... then did loads of town riding as well as country roads... Weather wasn't that good and the rain was a real pain but I think that also did me good not having perfectly dry roads..

Loved it so much that yesterday I ordered a brand new MSX... it's being delivered to the dealer next Friday but they'll hold onto it until the new registration on 1st Sep... so I'll have a 69 plate... ooh ahh

I managed to get an amazing deal on the new bike with an extended warranty thrown in...so it'll come with 3 years warranty + breakdown cover

I'm so excited to get back riding again,.. ;)

Completely agree. And my experience is that for the most part, blokes are more useless at looking after small kids, largely because babies are so BORING, and there are usually much more interesting things to do than sit around waiting for them to throw up or shit themselves. Of course there will be exceptions, but no one wants to see them in adverts because they have no comedy value.

I know some people will be offended, and they are welcome to write to me outlining their anger. I promise I'll read them and not just chuck 'em in the bin, sorry, recycling receptacle :)

I shall give it a birthday play - I only acquired this a few weeks ago when a minty CD of it appeared at car boot for a quid - sounds great! I have since posted that I would like a vinyl version and asked for opinions on which pressing would be a good choice, as there are so many. Best Jazz album of all time? That's a tall order. All I can say is 1959 was a great year for Jazz: Miles's 'Kind of Blue'; Mingus's 'Ah Um' and The Dave Brubeck Quartet 'Time Out'.

As to 'Kind of Blue' - I think it good enough to have four copies!

I think we all take clock batteries for granted. Clocks draw so little power the battery lasts for ages, so we forget about them.

One thing that has always puzzled me is why does the first battery (often supplied with the clock) always last far longer than any subsequent battery. My kitchen clock ran for years on its first battery, as did the bedroon alarm clock.

Perhaps clocks feel their age like the rest of us. I used to have the energy to go all day and then some, these days my batteries are flat by teatime :(

This year's wasps' nest has been in the bungalow's wall cavity, the entrance being an airbrick under our bedroom window (I have on occasion heard them 'snoring' at night, something another member has recently experienced).

But my question is: why have so many of these wasps turned albino? Only seems to have happened in the last couple of weeks, but I'd estimate about one in four of them are now white. Unlikely to be albinism, so might it be diet related, like it used to be with white dog shit in the good old days?

Thanks for the heads up, our front door is right in their flight path. One did collide with my nose when I was leaving the house last week. And I don't care if the EU frowns on waspicide - whenever I do roofing work during winter and spring, I always uncover a lot of hibernating queens. One dead queen is one less nest (by my calculations) so they all get squashed.

I always liked the look of Arai's but never got comfortable with one, always felt too tight. I ended up using Shoei helmets. Still got my last one although it's a few years old now. It would probably be safer covering my head with Hobnobs rather than using it lol. I'll never wear it again but all the time it's there it feels as though I haven't completely given up bikes.

However there is a lot of adverts and programme sponsoring, I've no issue with that but there is a dating agency for the more mature type that sponsors stuff in the evening and they must have found the smuggest people on the planet to feature in their adverts, they look so pleased with themselves that I'm surprised they would need a dating site as they are so in love with themselves.

To the same place as 'firemen' - they are all called 'fire fighters' now. Actually the use of "actor" for a female stage performer goes back to 1712, so we are only just catching up.

That's what I mean. It's not actually a complex situation at all but you don't get it.

What your forgetting is that the EU really don't want a no deal either. The UK is 5th largest economy in the world...

You might have noticed that since the preparations for no deal exit were put in motion the EU have already changed their stance from insisting there will be no further negotiation to wanting to talk again. This is how it should have been handled from the start. I'd expect a bright 14 year old to suss out that this is the optimum strategy in about ten minutes. Instead we've had 2 years of pissing about.

Perhaps we can raise the tone of this thread with a science question:

I took a bag of crisps onto the plane (flavour probably irrelevant, but FYI smoky bacon), and when during the flight I got them out, I found that the bag had inflated like a balloon. My guess is that the crisps were packed under normal atmospheric conditions, and then in spite of the plane's cabin being pressurised, the ambient air pressure was less than normal, causing the bag to act like a pumped up tyre.

My question is this:

Could this explain why whenever I fly anywhere I have an uncomfortable and urgent need to fart? Perhaps my guts are behaving like the crisps packet.

On the return trip I did take some precautions - no baked beans in the hours prior to flying, and a good dump that morning. Still had a lot of wind to let go of, which I meted out in tiny pips, which thanks to the pre-flight poo were not smelly. At least the old lady sat next to me seemed able to continue her word search and showed no obvious signs of distress.

Does my theory have any scientific basis, or is it just a load of hot air?

walpurgis
09-09-2019, 20:26
You are correct. Cabin pressure is generally below ground level atmospheric pressure.

Well, do you ever hope there'll be a bit of extreme turbulence that slams them up against the roof? Got to say I do. Maybe a bit of claret, broken nose or something. Never seen it happen but I know people who have so I live in hope. Although I don't fly much anymore so probably missed my chance.

Perfect for us - a lot of walking, a lot of eating/drinking, a lot of reading, and a fair bit of sleeping :)

Made my annual visit to Nessebar old town, a UNESCO World Heritage site with a lot of history, if that's your thing. Mostly for me it's visiting their little record shop, where I always pick up one or two souvenirs. The guy actually remembers me now, so either I'm really memorable or business is really shit. After buying "Rattle That Lock" by David Gilmour last year, which ended up a bit misshapen by the time I got it home, I vowed to get no more vinyl.

But this time I ended up getting mint-looking copies of "Siren" by Roxy Music (I know, but I'm trying to complete their album discography and only a couple to go), and "Welcome to my Nightmare" by Alice Cooper. Cost me a total of £22, so not mega bargains, unless they play mint.

Marco, always thinking about yer belly!

Didn't get to "eat out" this year (we were all-inclusive and watching the pennies a bit), but the hotel food was actually really good, though not traditional Bulgarian. I think they were just catering for several nationalities. I seemed to get through a lot of veal steaks served in a variety of sauces (which I liked).

But the culinary highlight came on Wednesday evening, in the form of a Cockney-sounding gob-on-legs, and his equally vocal wife. The bloke had been a bit of a knob all week, swearing loudly about anything and everything within earshot of all the small kiddies. I could have happily knocked the little fat fuck's pint onto the floor and mop it up with his head, but we were trying to have a chilled holiday so we gave him a wide berth (as did everyone else).

Anyway, as I was browsing the a la carte offerings my attention was drawn by him and his equally mouthy bint giving the holiday rep some grief about the temperature of the Chilli. Mrs. Gobshite had a food thermometer stuck in it with a reading of 56C, which apparently isn't good enough. She declared (loud enough for the whole restaurant to hear that "I do this for a living, and this should read 75C!" I'm guessing her "profession" is school dinner lady. I just pushed past her and got some of the condemned Chilli and very nice it was too :)

Begs the question though: Who the f__k takes a food thermometer on holiday?

Next day they were gone - I suspect they were after some kind of discount off their holiday. I might have a look on Trip Advisor if I get a bored minute, they will definitely have posted something.
We did do a tour round a wine place in Pomorie last year, where we got to try out various plonks. The reds were largely quite a fruity bouquet with earthy undertones, and an amount of woodiness...sorry I can't keep that up - they were nice, but we're not big wine drinkers. I think the cheeses that came with it helped.

Lol - and the English wonder why they're often hated abroad?

Plus it's usually the arrogant southerners in tourist resorts who are most guilty of ruining the reputation of decent English people.... Sorry, that's just been my experience, although I know plenty of English people from the south, in real life, particularly proper cockneys, who are the complete opposite, but some of the tourists abroad are a different breed.

Chilled out holiday or not though mate, I'd have slapped the c*nt. Done it before in similar situations!

Priceless - that's just too funny for words!!

The answer to your question though, is a sad cow with nothing better to do. I'd have shoved it up her arse, and told her it was a damn sight tighter in that hole than her 'front one' has likely ever been!:eyebrows: And yes, they were almost certainly trying to get a discount, through fraudulent pretences. Ha - no worries. Glad you enjoyed it. It's just that Bulgarian (and Romanian) wine gets a bad rep here, simply because we get all their plonk, which over there is a different ballgame. I've not been to Bulgaria, but it's a country I'd certainly like to visit.

Yes, saw the Victorian street, waited ages to get served in the pub there, ended up walking out :D

Went down to the bright lights of Leek this morning, to collect a rather nice Atacama hifi rack (cheers Dave), got it set up without breaking anything, and Mrs. P actually likes it! That's a first, any changes I make usually just draw a groan, and she invariably uses her acceptance of these changes as a bargaining tool for her future wants.

Now all that gear has moved from my line of sight, the lounge looks less like Laskys and more like Currys 10 years ago. Now she says the telly looks lost and we need a bigger one. Who am I to argue?

I loved my Panasonic 42" plasma, had it for over 10 years and was still working like new when I changed to my current Samsung LED set, but boy do they eat the leccy! Well, that was my bargaining tool for a new one with my missus. :)

Lol... I always laugh at suff like that [if you were being serious]!:D

I can honestly say, hand on heart, that I've never needed to use a "bargaining tool" to convince Del of having something I wanted in the house, simply because we make ALL such decisions together, and more often than not we like the same things/have the same tastes.

The only time that changes is when we're choosing something that she knows much more about than me (such as the kitchen appliances we put in), in which case I largely leave her to it, although I still get a small say in matters - and vice versa, when it comes to things like TVs (size or style). Del had virtually no input in that (same with the home-cinema system), and was quite happy to leave that all to me.

I guess it's handy though that 90% of the time we like the same things, so arguments are rare:)

To be fair, Sue has instigated the last two TV upgrades, so yes I was joking, but it is true that an LED telly uses about 10% of the electricity a plasma does, so it’s a win win! :)

Del has probably learned, like the rest of us, that arguing is futile :ner:

Me and Mrs. P don't argue about buying choices and priorities, but through mutual respect we do discuss larger purchases before committing. We don't have bottomless pockets, and buying one thing usually comes at the expense of something else. I would never impose my will on her, and this works both ways:)

Yup, or give money *directly* to the needy themselves, which is why we support the missions in our church and homeless we meet personally in different situations, not to big charities, where as you say a large chunk of your donations are going to support fat cats.

It's not that simple though, is it? (Genuine question.) Take Cancer Research - a massive charity, with massive overheads due to the scientific work they have built up to over the years. You need a good CEO at the helm, not just to raise funds, but direct the organisation where it goes with its various research projects etc. You're unlikely to find someone with the experience and competence who would do it for free, so you need to attract the right talent, and if paying them a sizeable salary in consumate with the size and operations of the charity and drives its aims and delivers its goals, is that the wrong thing to do? If you capped the CEO's salary at say a reasonable £60k, would you get a person capable of managing and driving an organisation of that size? I wouldn't think so...

I don't necessarily disagree with any of that, Alex, but the problem for me is, quite simply, you don't know exactly how much of your donation is going DIRECTLY to the people who need it. Whereas, if I give, say, £30 to a missionary priest, who lives and works daily (say in Africa) with the very people who need financial support, I *know* that they'll get the £30 - same as if I give £5 to a homeless guy sleeping rough outside of our church.

And I'm not comfortable giving money to large charities simply because I just don't know how much of my donation is going to those who need it, and how much is being eaten up in, let's call it, 'admin costs', however legit and justifiable. It's the uncertainty of it all, and whether I'm largely just funding the lifestyle of some capitalist fat cat, rather than the poor and needy, which I'm concerned about. That is my point.

Marco.

Alex_UK
05-12-2019, 22:45
Indeed - I guess the big charities are no different to big business. I do support some of them, but equally agree it is good to do the more "direct" stuff which we also do where we can.

Are we being unreasonable in wanting to see the TV working before parting with our money? The seller cannot insist that you pay immediately, and if they do you can ignore it.

eBay policy says you have two days to pay for an auction (or BIN) item so you have plenty of time to go have a look first ... but then you will have to pay or risk getting an 'unpaid item' strike on your account. Personally if It turned out to be a bag o shite I would walk away. ;)

Why I think Political discussion should not be allowed on forums such as this

A recent ‘Boris big win’ thread has highlighted this issue for me. Now politics is an area in which I hold strong feelings and one upon which I try to stay informed. In the ‘Boris big win’ thread there are comments that I strongly agree with and ones I strongly disagree with (I have now deleted my only response to that thread because I felt it was hypocritical to add to it at all). The problem is that some of the comment I find so poorly informed and dogmatic that, for me, it creates a very negative view of the writer. A negative view that is now likely to influence the opinion of other, non politics related, issues they may subsequently post about. It reminds me of the, oft attributed to Dennis Thatcher, quote “why not remain silent and appear stupid than speak and leave no doubt” ;). In short, I believe that heated (and they always become heated) discussions about politics (and religion for that matter) have no place on a ‘hobby/interest’ based forum and are only likely to create unnecessary division and resentment.

Edit:

Within the ‘Boris big win’ thread Marco alludes to the pink fish media (pfm) forum and that he feels they handle political discussion well. I would disagree with that though. What they do well is to keep any sort of discussion out of the general forum areas and force it to occur in the ‘any other business’ section. However, there are people, long standing members even, who exclusively post on political issues. In fact they don’t just post on political issues, they actively promote one sided opinions in favour of a specific political agenda which they happen to support. These people literally never post about music or audio gear, their sole interest is to influence the political beliefs of that forums membership. For that reason I think this aspect is actually poorly moderated/managed on pfm.

Occasionally, AoS has had members join the forum who have turned out to be primarily interested in pushing a particular political viewpoint rather than discussing music and audio; those people have been promptly shown the door and that, in my opinion, is good moderation/management of the issue.

Excellent advice Alan, which I totally failed to heed. The result being that I've felt like death warmed up all day. And I wasn't even out that late - when I found myself queuing outside a pub where everyone else supposedly was, in the pouring rain, I decided I'd had enough and phoned Anitacabs to come collect me.

While waiting outside Richer Sounds to be collected, I suddenly needed the bog urgently, so ran across the road to a pub, where I was told entry was 3 quid. Well I was desperate, and in my hurry to step over the 'red velvet rope' I tripped and would have gone arse over tits had the bouncer not caught me. His professional opinion was that I'd had enough, but relented when I promised to just go for a pee then come straight back out.

THREE QUID PISS!

Anyway, we got to pick up the telly, and it's a corker! Only thing is, it's 4K, and our Sky's only HD, so that's a bit of a waste. Rather like taking Usain Bolt's trainers and sticking my feet in them :(

No, I think that baby will be equally baffled. Most children's first words are mummy or daddy, in this case it will probably be "what the f--k"!

I did recently see a US drama series where a certain sexually ambiguous character was always referred to as 'they'. I suppose it's the only non-gender way to refer to them in the third person apart from using 'it' which I imagine they would find offensive. Confusing times.

Both good totals. It's not what you post but how much rubbish you post. Ner

Absolutely, who wants to talk about boring old hifi when minge-management is up for discussion.

Bev, you never got back to us about whether Brazilians have a noticeable effect on reflected high frequencies, and whether a good old seventies bush makes a good bass trap :) Be happy to participate in a blind listening test - I promise I won't peep :eyebrows:

Gosh peeps remember... I'd forgotten all about it, I've got a head like a sieve...

I like it smooth. it does indeed reflect 'high frequencies' well.. and it's sexy (to me).... however my guy prefers to have a 'bass trap'... so I alternate from smooth to not so smooth... never bushy, that's just messy...never tricky to find my 'bits'... I'll say no more ...:stalks:

"a blind listening test" would be interesting, however peeping would be mandatory...:D

Lol - start to worry when you get near 100,000 posts (of pure pish), like me!:mental::D

As for all this chat about 'fur burgers', I'm too shy and lead too sheltered a life to indulge in it:o

;)

Marco.
