For anyone who hasn't already seen it, "Soundbreaking" is being shown again on Sky Arts. Can be found on their catch-up too. In 6 parts, it covers various aspects of recorded music. A must-see for music fans imo.

Rather dark and foreboding, claustrophobic, haunting and more than mildly disturbing - just my thing!:D

A rather insightful review [copied from Google]:
"The lighthouse, Robert Eggers most recent claustrophobic horror/psychological thriller is finally out in the UK, and by god is it a sight to behold. Set on a remote lighthouse island (obviously), the plot revolves around a young man (Robert Pattinson) trying to keep his sanity whilst working a four week shift with his extremely unlikeable superior (Willem Dafoe). If you know me well at all you’ll know that I am particularly fond of the psychedelic drama ‘Donnie Darko’ due to its weird and at times disturbing nature, but Donnie Darko doesn’t even come close to being as strange and twisted as this film. As soon as the lighthouse begins the insanely heavy focus on sound design comes in to play and we hear a loud and quite uncomfortable noise, which after being played countless times, gradually blends into the atmosphere. For this reason (amongst others) I think it is worth mentioning that the lighthouse is a very cinematic experience and should be treated as such. I have little doubt that once the film leaves cinemas it will never be experienced in the same way again, so I absolutely recommend that you go out and watch it soon. The sound emitted from the speakers is often so intense that you’ll feel the entire room vibrating, which isn’t helped by Mark Korven’s discomforting score which perfectly accompanies the feeling of suspense present throughout the movie.
With all of this chaos surrounding the two central characters, it becomes apparent that the performances of the protagonists will either make or break the experience on the whole. Fortunately both Pattinson and Dafoe are phenomenal, giving outstanding performances that to my knowledge are the greatest of either actor’s career. Where Pattinson does an outstanding job of portraying a realistic and unsettling descent into madness, Dafoe gives a terrifying impersonation of a cruel, superstitious man who has lived away from society for a large portion of his life. I finally understand the large number of individuals who claim that they were both robbed of Oscar nominations.
Which brings me to my final topic, the screenplay and the plot in general.
Each scene has a specific dynamic which is intended to allow a contrast between the moments in which Pattinson is alone, and when he is spending time with Dafoe.
In the instances where the young man is in solitude, Eggers allows the tension to build up with the atmosphere at its peak, however when both him and Dafoe are together most of this is gone in order to allow the two fantastic actors to improvise and show off the extent of their brilliance. This format remains apparent, until the final act of the film in which a shocking and sinister finale combines both of the former elements. By the time it was over, I was completely speechless about the phenomenon I had just witnessed, and remained so for hours to come. The lighthouse is a masterpiece however you look at it, but it also shouldn’t be taken lightly. It is certainly not for the faint of heart, as together with its disturbing atmosphere and the amazing performances of each member of the cast, it is uncomfortable and twisted film that in my opinion definitely would’ve deserved a best picture nomination."

I used to have all the Robert Downey 'Sherlock' films, and I would agree that they were an interesting take on the Sherlock/Watson dynamic, but having watched them a few times, decided it wasn't worth keeping them.

I've mostly been watching old 'Battlestar Galactica' episodes. There's some clunkers but on the whole it's better than I remembered. Good characters and the stories weren't bad, production values let it down a bit. Still way better than the re-boot.
What gets me is that the Virgin box insists I enter a pin number if I want to watch it before 2200 hrs.

Yes it's parental control but it's a kids TV show, or at worst it's 'family viewing'. It used to be on of a Sunday evening right after Bullseye and I don't need to put a code in to watch old episodes of that.

maybe virgin have misclassified it. if its just that one. some of these parental controls are impossible.. amazon comes with it off.. many come on and it can be awkward to switch off with some companies.. some fool thinks its a good idea to make it almost mandatory.
Like amazon who insist on someone in their 60's or 70's proving by photo id the are older than 18. hence i buy from other companies now as when they make a damn fool error no one will take responsibility for correcting it. we are talking a bottle of whisky here not a gun

I think it needs repeated viewing, and you do need to look at the 'extras' to understand what has happend in the intervening years.

Original story was from Hemmingway, and screenplay was written by both Jules Furthman and William Faulkner. Bogey was a freelance fisherman in the French W Indies and ended up again on side of right.
The fisherman bit rings a bell because I remember thinking that a Bogart character would never do that for a living. Although I think he was into his sports fishing and owned a yacht. But thats not the same.

Hemingway was a bit of an extreme character (nutter?). Interesting though, a bit like Jack London in ways. Funny thing is I've read London, but never Hemingway. I tend to enjoy American writers.
I've read 'A Farewell To Arms' but wasn't that impressed. It's just about him knocking around and eating and drinking, nothing much happens. At least that's my recollection.

Good film that, probably their best one. I was in America in 2004 and several of the indigenous personnel advised me how much they had enjoyed it, as though just by being British I must have somehow been personally involved with making it. I hadn't even seen it at the time.

yeah i like mitch's version too... easier to follow and set in this country. the original big sleep that never got released in cinemas was easier to follow. it was released on bluray in 1997 as a double bill.
Yes - I think your right: Mitchum's version is easier to follow. I have the same difficulty with most of the cop dramas shown on TV. (Except for 'Death in Paradise' where the guilty party is revealed at the end a la Agatha Christie, and it is always the least suspected character!)
The Big Sleep isn't meant to be easy to follow. Even Chandler admitted he didn't know who committed one of the murders and he wrote it!
The Mitchum version is unwatchable IMO, like most Michael Winner films.

I see green Parakeets quite often, their screech is distinctive, as is their colour. They seem to have adapted well to UK life and apparently have little negative impact on indigenous bird life as their diet and roosting/nesting habits are different. I quite like them.

there are about 30 in victoria park in glasgow. think they are the most northerly parakeets in world but seem to survive ok

Agree about MASH, but found Catch 22 unsatisfactory. However having read the book, I realise that it would be almost impossible to capture the lampooning cynicism on film, so I suppose the film wasn't a bad attempt, if a bit of a 'curates egg'

The film isnt historically overly accurate but you get the gist... It was controversial at the time of release because of its apparent glorification of murderers, and for its level of graphic violence, which was unprecedented at the time.
It did open up cinema tho. It was nominated for 9 academy awards and won 2.
Tried watching that film, Greenland from last year.. it was worse than painting a long fence.... :doh:

I watched 'The Edge' 1997 on DVD last night. I'd never heard of it until recently and bought it on the strength of reviews. What a great movie! Powerful stuff from Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin, gripping all the way through.

When shooting the early scene when the tanker burns and they abandon ship, Humphrey Bogart and Raymond Massey got into a friendly argument over who had the better stunt double. In the end, the two stars decided to do the stunt themselves. Massey elaborates on this anecdote in detail in his autobiography, "A Hundred Different Lives".

I think I saw that at our local film club. From what I remember it was typically wierd Lynch. I couldn't follow what was going on, didn't understand it - and might have even walked out!

IMO the surest way to ruin a David Lynch film is to try to understand it. I always just enjoyed the "moments", without worrying too much what it all meant. I did try with "Twin Peaks" and that got me nowhere. Always liked the music too :)

That was 'The Straight Story' 1999. I saw it recently, it was OK, but not very memorable.
'Lost Highway' is very different and enigmatic to say the least. I found my DVD of it and will probably watch it again later.

Quite a good war film this, but with a difference, and is partly based around real characters, although they were not nessessarily connected.
The story of the Jewish woman Rachel Stein in Zwartboek is based on Dutch resistant fighter Esmée van Eeghen. Van Gein was based on the lives of Ans van Dijk and Andries Riphagen. Notary Smaal is based on the unsolved murder of 65-year-old lawyer H. de Boer in The Hague on 30 May 1945 (shortly after the liberation). During the war, de Boer appeared to have maintained good contacts with the German Sicherheitsdienst.
