Genourous IMHO - I only made it through the first 15 minutes. The Stonehenge set is risibly bad, I mean 'Spinal Tap' bad...and as for the dialogue...:rolleyes:

Went to see Limitless at the Showcase, Reading, where they have recently installed all-digital projection. My word, what picture quality! Gone is the poorly focussed 35mm picture with gate and framing jitter, replaced with a rock-solid image with tremendous detail and vibrancy. It could be that the old projectors had had their day, but this has transformed my cinema-going experience and I shall be looking for digital projection to come to Basingstoke SOON!
The film itself is a classy and stylish story that asks the question: what if you could take a drug like that, that opens your brain power? Would you take it? Very enjoyable film and one that relishes high resolution viewing.

Just started watching Battlestar Galactica mini series on DVD upscaled to 1080P from DVD & it looks pretty good!
Doubt i'll see it all tonight, but there is always tomorrow ;)

BSG I think is is one of those series that comes along everynow and then and is just simply fantastic.
I love the fact it's based in space but isnt a full on SyFy, it's not like StarGate SG-1 when they need to fix something they just invent it.
in BSG if they dont have it they make do.
I've been watching the repeats on Sky ATlantic and it's awesome !

I'd agree, I really enjoyed BSG. The quality of the writing and acting really shines through. There are a few weaker episodes in the middle of seasons but you get that with any show.
My favourite way to watch was with a glass of Bourbon. There's lots of drinking in most episodes, mostly by Saul and I found drinking along provided a more immersive experience. :glug:
Absinthe with a dash of water looks quite a bit like Ambrosia (http://en.battlestarwiki.org/wiki/Ambrosia) if you fancy drinking along with the lower ranks. ;)
On reflection perhaps I got a bit too involved. :mental: I never have looked at toasters in the same way. Frakking toasters! :lol:

I've only seen the pilot episode of Caprica and quite liked that. I'll have to get hold of the rest to check out. I hadn't actually heard of Blood and Chrome until today. I'll definitely check that out.
I agree with others that BG is the kind of series that only happens once in a decade. A fully realised and realistic universe where technology is not the solution to everything. Much psychological debate and fascinating characters.
A special mention for Mary McDonnell, whom I've always thought of as a great actress ever since Dancing With Wolves.
I like Caprica so far, but when will the series be continued?
P.S. never mind about Six, what about Grace Park (Boomer)? Currently enjoying her in Hawaii Five-0.

Well i must admit that the mini series held my attention vastly more than "The Plan" even though it was only a DVD to The Plan being on blu ray ;) I nearly managed to watch the whole lot last night (& once i got into it i really wanted to :eyebrows:) but i had to hit the sack before i passed out :lol:
So can anyone explain what the mini series was about? What i mean is, is the mini series a much smaller version of what the whole 5 seasons of BSG is about? IE kind of massively condensed? :scratch:
Or is it a prequel?
No, the miniseries is set just before S1 Ep.1 (so yes a prequel) and creates the setting for the story to continue. Now you need to buy the full five series!
Forget The Plan, it was a bad idea and barely holds together.

Watched 'Rosemary's Baby' yesterday for the first time in about 25 years:eek:
What a fantastic film, perfect perfomances, well paced, gripping and somehow unsettlingly creepy all at the same time. Horror through suggestion only, no blatent gore or slashing. Great direction, no fast cutting, wobbly documentary style camera work or any of that intrusive arty bollocks that breaks the suspension of disbelief and the immersion in the story and the world it creates.
If you've never seen it or not watched it in years check it out and realise what it is that is so wrong with contemporary movies.

Thought I would plug a movie I really like and just watched again: "The Last Days of Disco".
I have it on Criterion DVD, and it sports a beautiful picture and good (2 channel) sound by which I really enjoy the very classic disco soundtrack.
A beautiful looking movie with lots of music and beautiful girls and Chloe Sevigny. What more could anyone want? ( And it is very funny, Wednesday was "GayDay")
Impossible for any hetero male to watch the film and not fall for Chloe.

The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest [Blu-ray]
It really helps to have read the books. If you have, this is a great realisation of the third novel, given the constraints of a film. Noomi Rapace is again superb as Salander and Nyqvist is excellent as Blomqvist. The definition is only so-so but it's a great story and the court-room scenes are highly satisfying - although what a real judge would say about the police making an arrest during a trial would probably be unprintable.
One work of advice: my girlfriend insisted on watching it in dubbed English. Don't. The original Swedish voices with subtitling are far better and that's how I originally watched it.

I'm usually quite hard to please when it comes to movies, but last night I watched 'Carlos the Jackal' and thoroughly enjoyed it.
At 165 mins it's a little long, and as each scene is filmed in the appropriate language, jumping from english to german to spanish to palestinean etc. it takes a little concentration, but it's worth the effort.
Edit; Just found out that it is a film version of a Canal+ mini series, hence the length and a few little editing issues...
It doesn't claim to be factual account of the terrorist's life, but it does give a little insight into the motivation and ego's of these self styled glamorous 'freedom figters' (or ego driven misguided 'terrorists', take your pick) of the 70's & 80's.
It's pretty well directed, and to my mind is not particularly judgemental either way...worth a watch.
One small quibble why use an early 'new order' track (everything's gone green I think) as backing music to a hijack scene set in '75, and the 'lightning seeds' (or was it the bluetones) are not really a band I associate with the demise of the Berlin Wall...but I'm a picky fellow ;)

\Last night watched Tarantino's 'Inglorious Basterds' - Can't believe I haven't got to this sooner - pearling film, loved it.
Also watched 'Dog Soldiers' - not the werewolf effort with Sean Pertwee, this is a seventies film about a vietnam vet returning to the States where some problems ensue for him. It was released in the USA as 'Who'll Stop The Rain' to tie in with the CCR track that features in the soundtrack. Worth it if you have a liking for offbeat 70's films.

A rather good working of the book The Long Walk which I read some thirty years ago. Good characterisation and the feeling of the immensity of the landscape are well conveyed. The book is heart-wrenchingly sad, the film slightly less so. It's a long film but holds the attention throughout. Recommended.
Watched the first episode of The Walking Dead blu ray.

I watched the original 1935 'The 39 Steps' last night, not sure if I have seen it before, if I have it must have been years ago. Absolute classic, I love the scene in the farmhouse when they are all giving each other sly glances at the dinner table.... wonderful and Hitchcock at his best :)

Watched Burke and Hare on blu-ray last nght.
It was ok, quite enjoyable without being laugh out funny. Was more interested in it being John Landis' first film for many a year as he's a director whose comedies I've always enjoyed previously.
Oh and it has Ronnie Corbett in it playing the head of the militia so an extra thumbs from me for that :lol:

I caught the end of the USA version of Life on Mars the other night - Harvey Keitel plays the Gene Hunt character and Michael Imperioli ( Goodfellas, The Sopranos) is in it too as one of the cops - set in New York City - looks pretty good.

Really good little film, low key character study stuff like they used to make back in the early 70s - reminds me a bit of 'Five Easy Pieces' - recommended - if you didn't already see it years ago;)

I normally dont like him but he was good in this.
Just made my wife sit through Quadrophenia - she's never seen it before, and it reminded me just how many now famous names were in that movie. ("he's from Eastenders!" :doh:) Shame it is the 1999 DVD release - taken from the VHS apparently! :eek: I can believe it - 4:3, snow all over the place and generally rubbish audio - can't spoil a great film, though. :)

I don't think I could easily describe this film. It isn't SF and neither is it fantasy, but something in between. There is little storyline but it is an experience. Quite mesmerising and nothing like any other film I've ever seen. If you're game (and many will not be), then immerse yourself in the wonderful concepts, lush visuals and sympathetic score and just let it wash over you. The emotional intensity is quite something, if you see it through.
I watched that when it first came out, have to say I thought it tired to hard to be weird
not my cup of tea.

I've now watched it, Tim, and it was superb and disturbing and made for some very uncomfortable viewing. Brilliantly portrayed and acted, with lots of original bugging equipment used by the Stasi. The very idea that such a regime survived on everyone spying on everyone else, with 'Big Brother' watching over it all, was conveyed with fantastic claustraphobia. What an awful place East Germany was, and how good that it finally crumbled.

This film is a cult classic. It has many faults and the look of something that was hurriedly edited, but it's a Michael Mann film, and therefore something of interest. He is up there with Ridley Scott and Stanley Kubrick, in my estimation, for his cinematic vision. The soundtrack is by Tangerine Dream, the other good reason for watching it.
It's set in Romania during the second world war, where German soldiers move in to a mysterious Keep as a base for their operations, a move that they will come to regret. Something is in there, and it's not nice. It stars Scott Glenn and Jurgen Prochnow, and there's an early role for Gabriel Byrne.
The biggest problem you may have is actually getting hold of it - I am not aware of it ever having been released on DVD, certainly not on Blu-ray. It only seems to have been released on US VHS and Laserdisc.
This film desperately needs cut material restored to make full sense of the story, but I doubt that it will ever receive that much attention.

I'm just about 100% sure he starred in a film that involved him on the run from some rich guy that wanted his blood, not because he wanted to kill him - but it'd make the rich bloke immortal ;) Apparently Mcclures' character never got ill & if i remember correctly he had a brother, though i'm not sure what happened to him :scratch:

Hi Dimitri, yes though in a way it's more true to life! Love the film myself & have it on blu ray. I think it's a damn good portrayal of the pressures of life becoming too much & what can happen when that is the case ;)

lol, i just got that from LoveFilm! I'm looking forward to it - I'm especially pleased to see Ellen Page in a mainstream Hollywood film. She was great in Juno, and before that in Trailer Park Boys, a Canadian mockumentary on life in a trailer park - also highly recommended!

I just watched the final season of The Wire - good grief, I couldn't believe it could actually improve on the first four, but it did! If anyone here has not seen this epic serial - don't delay, rent today!

I do indeed, and that's it now. The first two films were superb (and a very good working of a convoluted timeline) and I enjoyed the series.
Not to mention that Lena Heady is quite stunningly gorgeous.

Aye, i must admit that when i first sat down to watch the first season it did take a while to get used to the new actors ;) All of about one episode if i remember correctly, after that it just kind of melded together...
I was also impressed by the acting of Summer Glau, though i just couln't get Serenity & i haven't managed to watch the whole film yet :scratch: Ok perhaps she's a female Keanu Reeves & needs to be put in some kind of wooden position to work, good as a female terminator though - time will tell i guess :eyebrows:

I agree, Martin, Firefly and Serenity are excellent. Joss Whedon is a great screenwriter/director, and I was a _big_ fan of BTVS in the day. The episode, "Once More, With Feeling," is so good I sometimes wonder how so much talent can exist in just one man. Firefly - man, shame it was cancelled, but the network was apparently a little dismayed at some of its underlying (and not-so-underlying) messages, buggered around with its schedule and the episode order, then axed it. Boo! Hence Serenity, which is a fitting end to the serial - and yes, what an opening sequence!
Must get round to watching Dollhouse one of these days, another of Joss Whedon's short-lived ventures.

I loved Firefly and Serenity. Really different and good to watch, with interesting interactions between the main characters and the strange 'space cowboys' slant to them. The opening sequence in Serenity is brilliant!
I got Firefly in a sale many moons ago now - think I paid £13 for the whole series. bought it as it looked interesting and really enjoyed it. thought the film was pretty decent as well.
Never realised at the time that I got the series that it had been cancelled in the US without all the episodes being shown. Really confused as to why it never took off as I thought it was frsh and had a good slant on the usual sci-fi theme as you mention with the cowboy feel to it.
Just completed a re-visit of season 2 of The Sopranos - my favourite season - I love Ritchie Aprile - for me he was the best of Tony's enemies. 'And don't give me those Manson lamps!'
The scene in which Paulie Walnuts visits the psychic and discovers that he is being trailed by the ghosts of all the people he has whacked over the years is incredibly funny. Brilliant series just a shame it is no more...:(
I liked his ending :)
I still think they end the series right with that great ending.

Yesterday, just before the end of the Floyd 'fest' on BBC4, I switched over to BBC2 to watch 'The Draughtsman's Contract' , a film by director Peter Greenaway
Greenaway, whose films are always wierd, disturbing, thoughtful and beautifully filmed. I've seen most of them, and they are always worth watching:

I'm a big Greenaway fan. Drowning By Numbers is my favourite, with the Draughtman's Contract a close second. It truly is a beautiful film. The Cook, The Thief is a startling and disturbing film, a bit Tarantino if I'm honest! I think he became a little too 'knowing' by the time he made that one... Nyman's music always works so well in the context of a film, more so than when abstracted into a standalone musical release.

Yes it is. I'm not big on classical ballet (prefer modern works), but the sense of occasion and ,as you say, 'being there' made it a 'must do'. :)

Off to enjoy Star Wars - Revenge Of The Sith :eyebrows: I did say one a day... Actually i did try & watch this last night, i got through 40 minutes & thought i'd better hit the sack ;)
All 3 films of the new trilogy are superb. There is virtually no grain to distract from the picture, just the way i like it. The pictures themselves, well i wanted to see film number 3 having enjoyed the first & second so much...
Superb on blu ray :cool: 10/10 without a doubt!
I am very tempted by them ! and it's payday on Monday !!
Watched an excellent pirate dvd copy of Troll Hunter....not a bad movie IMO and somehow quite original.

Ok, so this CD is about to end & i'm going to be powering up the BD player for Star Wars - A New Hope... The original Star Wars :)
If this BD looks good then the whole lot should as this is the earliest release, like all the others it'll be watched on my TV as it's 2.35:1, it might be scaled to 2560 x 1080 but i know it'll show up more problems if there are any :eyebrows:

I was very impressed with Star Wars - A New Hope on blu ray :) There were only a few scenes where grain was evident & these generally occured in high contrast scenes (sky & desert). No trace of digital noise reduction to clean things up, everything is vastly more detailed...
I guess the whole set is as good as it's going to get :eyebrows:
Off to watch the one a day Star Wars - The Empire Strikes Back ;) I love blu ray (done right) :)

I got the new Blu-ray / DVD BFI release of Barbet Schroeder's 'More', music by Floyd, always a favourite of mine. Great 'Making of' doc, and the foreign language subtitles aren't burnt in on this version (thank you BFI!). Having watched the BR transfer yet but I've thoroughly enjoyed watching it again (again again!) on DVD. Well worth getting hold of if you are a fan of the late sixties counter-culture or c. 1969 Floyd...
Obscured by Clouds and Zabriskie Point are also worth pursuing for Floyd music.
'Touch of Evil' with Orson Welles. First time I have ever seen this film which is considered a minor classic and is referenced in so many other movies. Don't know how it has avoided me for so long but what a fantastic film with brilliant performances and a haunting atmosphere. They don't make 'em like this anymore, more's the pity.
'The Man Who Fell to Earth'. Has aged surprisingly well, but definitely too long at about two and a quarter hours.
I'm about to start watching Transformers 3 -1080p rip been told it's not very good but got nowt else to do this evening so I'll give it ago

I was just agreeing with that sentiment in another thread :)
An example: for me, 2001 A Space Odyssey is one of the greatest films ever made. The visual grandeur, the deliberate slow pace, the lack of dialogue for the first 30 minutes, the epic nature of the story, the open ending, the absolutely stunning special effects for its time, the superb musical accompaniment, the future vision, the collaboration of a great director and a great author...need I go on?
Can I get Ruth, my partner, to take any interest in it? No way :(

Yep, i have to agree with you, 2001 is a classic!
Have you ever seen "Judge Dredd" (Stallone) Martin, ok it's nothing like 2001 but there is a point in the film where one (of three) freaky brothers dials up one of the others mood altering devices on his head :lol:
What i'm attempting to say (probably poorly) is that what i decide to watch is in the same way as music - mood dependant ;) Now while i just love films like "Into The Wild" (Emile Hirsch) etc, there are a lot of times i like to see some serious action & kicking ass. Again it's mood dependant on what goes into the BD player :cool:

An impressive film but very distressing viewing ! The Japanese Army reached a depth of cruelty and callousness that was truly staggering .
I bought that recently not watched it yet. Many Chinese hate the Japanese because of that incident and others like it.

It was indeed hilarious, I'm never quite sure what to make of Boris, but you can't deny he's entertaining :) . . . maybe he would make a good PM, the rest of them are a bunch of tossers IMHO, at least Boris seems honest.
He's not as stupid as his bumbling manner suggests. He's always fun to listen to!
I've never thought Boris to be stupid, just slightly mad - an old fashioned English eccentric :lol:
He certainly is doing a good job as Mayor of London IMO.
Senna was a superb film, much more than a documentary. A true homage to the man, but not cloying as it certainly shows his personality to have been uncompromising.

Me too - I was at the christening of one of my best mate's daughter, and we all were in shock at the news... Still find it sad even now - he was one of the last proper racing legends, IMO.

Just watched Sucker Punch and Kick Ass the other day both good films in their own way but Sucker Punch is a really weird film; a kind of cross between One Flew over The Cuckoo Nest and Final Fantasy (anime typed films) and say 32nd street. Need to watch it again to say if I really like it or not.
Kick Ass is an interesting and somewhat different super hero film but watching an 11 year old child killing hoods with knives, swords etc is a tad disturbing.

Took a notion to watch Quatermas and the Pit tonight and imho it is one of the finest science fiction/horror films ever made. Good acting, brilliant special effects for the time and they still look pretty good today, nice music as well and the ending where Quatermas and Barbara stand as the music plays, London burns and the credits roll is a powerful ending; as they both look like they have been through hell and back, as they have, within the context of the film.
I would also say imho that this is probably the best film to come out of the Hammer studios as well. If you haven't seen this film then you are in for a treat.

Oh i agree wholeheartedly, I have also gone multi-region since my first DVD player (Panasonic DVD-RA71) Most people don't appear to know about multi-region mods to BD players though ;) I have picked up region A disks for 99p + the usual £1.25 postage on ebay :eyebrows:

Not the best film ever, but fun:- Dropzone (http://www.blu-ray.com/movies/Drop-Zone-Blu-ray/8310/#Review).. Region A locked...
Beats the pants off of the DVD for sure :)
E2A:- Having watched the whole film I am once again dumbfounded at the reviewers marking this down for video quality :scratch: There were one or two instances of a good bit of grain, but other than that detail was superb, there were no problems with noise or other nasties. Colour was wonderfully natural, there was no problem with contrast, line delination or black crush :rolleyes:
I take reviews on bluray.com with a pinch of salt ever since War Of The Worlds (Speilberg) got a 5* rating for video :lol:
Old films like Kelly's Heroes look better imho, this one was also very good indeed & I'd give it a 4* rating for video quality. I watched it on my 21/9 TV which upscales the picture to 2560 x 1080 (2.39-1 picture) so i should have seen more problematic areas than on a standard 1080P screen. It was great though...
Don't trust the reviewers, watch it yourself & make up your own mind :)
