Watched Peter Gabriels New Blood Live dvd last night. Well shot and although most of the songs are slow ones it is a great concert. Well worth buying if you like Peter's music. The new Blood Orchestra are superb on this..:cool:

Absolutely brilliant - a drama reconstruction of the very first rehearsal of Beethoven's 3rd symphony. It does for Beethoven what 'Amadeus' did for Mozart.

just finished "Larry Crowne" from blu ray, not a brilliant film but very enjoyable

Just finished City of Life and Death.

I did this in two goes as frankly this film is grim in the extreme and I had to do it in stages. I thought Schindler's List was about as bad as this sort of thing gets, but no, City of Life and Death depicts what I have heard called the 'Rape of Nanking' and to say it is awful is not doing justice to what the Japanese did to the Chinese in that city.

There is no relief in this movie, a few glimmers of humanity is swamped and crushed by the total inhumanity and brutality depicted. Worth watching but hard going. I won't be watching it again.

I was frankly taken aback at the picture quality of this DVD. I just wasn't expecting a 1972 film & as far as I know not a blockbuster to be so damn good :scratch: As it was a French DVD I had to set it to an English language - which turned out to be Australian :eyebrows: Subtitles set to off & I had the time of my life! Superb...

I have to say, I really enjoyed it. The folks at work warned me it was darker than the other two, but for me it made the film. Very entertaining indeed. Tonight it's a little different as I am just about to roll 'The Sands of Iwo Jima'

Funnily enough, I did watch The Tourist last night. I thought the visuals were breathtaking and Jolie looked suitably alluring, but really what a waste of two fine actors? Why the 'knowing looks' and dreamy feeling all through the film? The story did not convince and made no sense at all and, after investing in the tourist's innocence, the ending was frankly utterly daft writing. A terrible waste of resources.

How on Earth could this be the same director as The Lives of Others?

Came across these on You Tube first and then their own site Star Trek Phase 2

Basically a fan project including original cast members and pretty good acting (from the new ones) and special effects. What we have here is the second series of original Star Trek which was to be called Phase 2. These folks have taken the stories and made them. On average one a year.

I have watched a couple of the stories and enjoyed them a lot.

Here is the link to the first one Episode One "In Harms Way" in which the Guardian of Forever makes an appearance also, Captain Pike (including the original Enterprise), the Doomsday Device, The Kirk period Enterprise and the Enterprise A. Its a 60 minute story and very good considering the source.

Bernie, the picture quality will stun you, they really are great transfers! Second up you get an extra 18 minutes (I think it's 18 at any rate) on the Chronicles BD which are not on the DVD. It makes the whole thing make more sense ;)

Once I realised the Moby DVD was only encoded in stereo I hit the balanced outputs of the player....OMG :eyebrows:

See if you can find the Play DVD cheap Martin, you more than likely will not be disappointed, I was always blown away by the Porcerlain vid even when I only had a 720P projector. Can't say I'm in the least disappointed with any of the others either, yet now I'm used to BD ;)

After about 4 hours I'd gotten through to films beginning with 'C' :eyebrows: I also found an amazing amount of stuff with full HD sound, some types I'd never even heard of! Do get Baraka (24 bit 96KHz 5.1 PCM :))...


Anyway I decided to spin the disc that wouldn't play again, so I opened up the BD case & discovered that there was a second disc & I was spinning the extras disc previously :o BD1 was in the left hand cover :lol: So that was a load of hours wasted, but I discovered loads of new stuff!

My mistake may well have been worth it ;)

I really hate this DVD :eyebrows: There are too many things to find that are hidden on the standard DVD, but it's bloomin excellent :eyebrows:

I pulled the lot from the disc by using DVD Shrink, so it all plays in order & no hidden tracks, pity I haven't burnt the bugger yet :rfl: Good job I won't be around to hunt for stuff, I'll be too smashed by then ;)

Firmware? I've had to update my Sony BDP-S300 at least five times in its life in order to play new BDs.

Just in from watching The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo and I have to say I am impressed. I'm a big fan of the Steig Larsson trilogy and have read all the books and seen all the original films. I went in tonight wanting to dismiss a Hollywood remake, but I just couldn't - it's extremely well done and Lisbeth is portrayed exceptionally well by Rooney Mara. Top film and should appeal to all Salander fans out there, go see it ;)

The opening credits are great too, very dark with an interesting cover of Zeppelins Immigrant Song.

The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo

Watched it in Sony 4k digital projection at the Showcase last night. Overall very impressed, and the opening sequence, as you said, was superb (as was the cover of Immigrant Song).

Different parts of the story strayed from the book compared with the Swedish film, but no great harm was done to its flow. Rooney Mara was possibly too pretty for the part, but played it well. She wasn't really skanky enough, though, compared with Noomi Rapace who performed it perfectly. Also the violence was toned down and Bjurman was not sufficiently menacing.

However, the settings and supporting cast were excellent and it showed that Hollywood can do a good remake if they set their minds to it.

It is indeed and not what I was expecting at all Martin. I think I put it on my Tesco DVD list after you mentioned it, a minor classic is right and I'm going to watch it again tonight for the third time! I particularly liked the very subtle and detached inclusion of 'the creatures', building the atmosphere around them as opposed to a full visual CGI onslaught, which would have ruined the film IMO. But the icing on the cake for me was the Jon Hopkins soundtrack, which is the same Jon Hopkins of King Creosote and Diamond Mine fame, an album I love - absolutely superb music which goes a long way to building the tension and it has prompted some further research into his repertoire. I think you can only get the soundtrack as a download, but it's MP3 or WAV :eyebrows:

Main actors..... did you watch any of the bonus material Martin? I'm just watching it now and can't believe how well they have pulled it all off with just 4 crew and 2 actors. Edwards wrote, directed, filmed and produced the CGI himself, everyone else you see in the film are ordinary people they found on location and got to play a part - guerilla filmmaking at it's very, very best. I won't say much more in case anyone wants to watch it - just view it with an open mind and don't have any expectations, you might be surprised by it for a low budget film ;)

Awesome transfer, I would say reference level for a non animated or heavy CGI film. The sound come in 5.1 uncompressed ( first I've seen that type of label for sound 48Khz 24bit) but it leaped out of my speakers with ease.

What a pleasant change not to be spoon fed the usual sickly and largely unoriginal fare so often served up by Disney.

Just watched 'Devil' by M Night Shalaman.

Excellent film imho and sees him returning to issues of theology, in a similar way to Signs, i.e the boggie man in the film is not really what the film is about but a device to let MNS pose questions and possible answers. Interesting and well worth watching.

It's very good indeed, Mark, and what's more Ruth really enjoyed it last night (I watched it again with her) and she doesn't like SF.

It's based on a Philip K. Dick short story and he can do no wrong in my eyes. It's well created as I said earlier, great to watch and Emily Blunt is just incredibly alluring. A very good alternative love story with some ideas that will make you think for a while.

Thought I was alone in liking this series. I watched it awhile back and while it holds up reasonably well I don't think it has aged as well as Space 1999 or UFO.

'Kill The Irishman' - based on a true story about an Irish gangster who takes on the Cleveland mob. 'The best gangster film since Goodfellas' proclaims the blurb on the box. Hmm... so better than Casino, Donnie Brasco and Carlito's Way then?

Well, no. It's still a good watch though if you are a Cosa Nostra groupie like me, and there's a great turn from Paul Sorvino as 'Fat' Tony Salerno.

Most recently i have watched Cowboys & Aliens which i thought was very well shot but the story and the premis of the film was poor. So all in all very dissapointing.

I also watched Our day will come which is a Vincent Cassel film and i have to be honest i don't really know what happened it was too weird....

And then there was Senna, now being a big F1 fan i was always going to enjoy this but even if you don't like F1 i would recommend this film, it is fantastic.

I got told about this by my youngest and I’ve watched the lot so far.
Set in Sicily, a place I’ve spent many happy times in.
Brilliant series imo. A gently humorous look at Southern Italian/Sicilian life and culture centred around a local police Inspector.
Well worth making the effort to watch.

Don't be put off by the subtitles.

Interesting, it was a toss up between that and The Debt and we went for the latter. It was a superb film.

WNTTAK is definitely worth watching, starts slowly and it took me a while before I worked out what was going on (I didn't know anything about the storyline), but it's very compelling - Ezra Miller is superb.

I like to watch films blind, like Monsters, which was a real gem as I had no idea what was coming :)

That's the same as Kevin - I nearly lost patience TBH, but glad I didn't - a great film. I shall be watching The Debt around 9, with a bottle of red wine and a pizza :)

I agree - Lisbeth is just not skanky and disconnected enough in the Hollywood remake. Noomi Rapace played it superbly well in the Swedish original.

LOL no Mark she is actually ok.

The flaws are holes in the plot and structure of the film, that you could sail a Battleship through, however it was still enjoyable and good fun.

Interesting and thought-provoking film about torture and asks the question: how far would you go to save the lives of millions of people? Very hard to watch in places, but there are no easy answers about how far a terrorist should be questioned in order to allay the explosion of nuclear bombs.

Agreed. Sadly Hipatia's cruel death was far worse than was depicted in the film. And to think Cyril was later canonised!
