In this, at times its 240 a minute...

Afterward, United Artists was willing to allow him anything he wanted. According to Steven Bach (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0045359)'s "Final Cut", Cimino got $11.6 million to make his next project, a western about a land war in Johnson County, Wyoming, featuring a first-rate cast. It went over budget almost immediately, mostly due to Cimino's insistence on absolute perfectionism. Stories abounded that he was tearing down sets for no reason, and hiring and firing crew members almost weekly. Many of the stories were exaggerated, but the cost ballooned to a then-astronomical $40 million ($125 million in 2020 dollars). When Cimino presented the movie to United Artists, it ran well over five hours. After some squabbling, he agreed to trim it down to less than three hours. The movie was a commercial and critical disaster that destroyed Cimino's career as a director. It nearly bankrupted United Artists, which merged with MGM. Even afterwards, Steven Bach (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0045359), at one point, told Cimino to his face, that his leading lady was so unappealing, that the audience was going to wonder why Kris Kristofferson (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001434) and Christopher Walken (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000686) "weren't fucking each other, instead of her". Cimino told him to go fuck himself.
What's ironic about Heaven's Gate is that while the film takes many liberties with history, some of the things people criticize the film for were historically accurate. There was a roller skating rink in Johnson County, Wyoming around that time. The part where Nathan Champion writes a farewell note mentioning that he is trapped in a burning cabin, a scene which Roger Ebert called "ridiculous", actually happened. The residents of Johnson County did make movable breastworks out of logs and wagons to use in battle. Members of the Wyoming Stock Growers Association did offer to pay mercenaries $5 per day plus expenses and $50 for each person they killed. There's a photo of the real Frank Canton wearing a Cossack-style hat like Sam Waterston does in the movie. The wealthy cattlemen and their hired guns were rescued by the U.S. cavalry. The scene in the prologue set at Harvard where the graduates circle around a tree and rowdily compete to grab a wreath of flowers was based on a real Class Day tradition from the 19th century.
Heaven's Gate does contain historical inaccuracies. The movie exaggerates the number of people who were marked for death by the cattle barons and the number of people who were ultimately killed. In reality, only four people were killed during the invasion of Johnson County: Nathan Champion and Nick Ray, who were murdered by the invaders, and two of the gunmen hired by the cattlemen, who accidentally shot themselves with their own guns. While European immigrants did settle in the Great Plains, and there was nativist opposition to new immigrants from Eastern and Southern Europe in late 19th century America, most of the residents of Johnson County, Wyoming at the time had been born in the United States. The music that plays during the roller skating scene is anachronistic, as it was first released in 1951. While Wyoming's Acting Governor and Senators might have had advanced knowledge of the cattlemen's plot to invade Johnson County, I know of no evidence that President Benjamin Harrison did. Many of the characters in the movie are named after historical figures, but bear little resemblance to their real-life counterparts. The real James Averill (sic) wasn't a wealthy Harvard graduate and U.S. Marshal. He was a small businessman who was born in Canada and lynched along with Ella Watson in 1889, a few years before the invasion of Johnson County. The real Nathan Champion never worked as a hired gun for the Wyoming Stock Growers Association. Instead he was one of the leaders of the independent ranchers opposed to the WSGA. The real Frank Canton wasn't from a wealthy, politically-connected family. He was a former outlaw born Josiah Horner who changed his name and became a stock detective for the WSGA and a Johnson County sheriff. The real William C. Irvine wasn't a reluctant participant in the invasion of Johnson County but an unrepentant defender of it.
imo a superb film ive always liked. i know its not accurate but its a bit of film artistry and magic, and a good story(if not accurate).
It was pulled from viewing due to it being slated by audiences and critics alike. Much of that was down to the start of the Regan years where 'slagging off' America had become a dirty idea suddenly. if it had come out a few year earlier it would have perhaps been different. In later years it became a classic and perhaps rated as the 'Great American Film'.
ps, the remastered bluray is pretty superb.
I don't know about that. It is quite good but even so it's not good enough to be as long as it is.

Fionn Whitehead is a young British soldier trying anything to escape the beaches, Mark Ryland has to take his little boat across the Channel and help with the rescue.
Another one where I'm not sure what to make of it. Very little in the way of characterisation, or dialogue. Not much story either and there's times that it looks a bit cheap, like a 1970s BBC production where they're trying to replicate a huge battle in Studio 2 with six people and ten bob's worth of scenery . It feels like a very empty film.
I did think it was a low budget production and so gave it a pass but I've since found out it cost $150 million.
Pass revoked.
Despite the massive box-office success and critical acclaim I can't rate it. Just about worth a watch but not one I'd ever return to.
In comparison the 1958 'Dunkirk' is a much better film, I've seen that half a dozen times and would happily watch it again.

Joseph Bell, who inspired the character of Sherlock Holmes, was consulted by Scotland Yard on the case.
The replica nineteenth century dockland set took two months and fifty men to construct at Shepperton Studio's largest soundstage. The set also included a replica muddy Thames River.
"Prey" was superb.

Many people believe that the lawyer's name (Crosby) is an in-joke reference to the Bob Hope(I)/Bing Crosby pairing. In fact it's a coincidence; this was the character's name in the stage play as well as the two previous film versions. When Larry reads the book title "100 Girls I'd Like to Pork", the word "pork" is clearly dubbed in, because he is saying something else, most likely "fuck", which you cannot say in a sexual context without receiving an R rating from the MPAA. The word "pork" is at a different volume and doesn't match his lip movement.
The movie was set in 1987, the present day. At the end of the movie, Larry and Owen meet again the next year, 1988, and Larry asks "How's Momma?" to which Owen replies "Dead." Sadly, Anne Ramsey (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001649) did die in 1988, a year after the movie was released.

I watched 'The Big Country' 1958 once again on 5 ACTION channel last night. I'd forgotten what a superb movie it was, a proper treat!

Good film this mainly because Attenborough and John Hurt both give very convincing performances. Ludovic Kennedy, who wrote a book about it, was a technical advisor, as was hangman Albert Pierrepont, who was brought in to ensure the hanging scene was as accurate as possible.
The exterior shots in the film were on the actual location. The street was renamed in the 1950s and then the whole area demolished completely not long after the film was made. It has since been re-developed beyond recognition. The street no longer exists under any name.
Christie had a high IQ but his big problem was disposing of the bodies. He buried some in the back yard but his dog was digging them up. An initial police search failed to find the shallow graves, or notice that a human femur was propping up the fence.
With the yard full, Christie resorted to stashing corpses in an alcove of his kitchen and then wallpapering over it. They were discovered when a new tenant attempted to fit brackets for a shelf he was putting up. At his trial Christie pleaded insanity but the jury didn't buy it and he was hanged.

yeah, timothy evens got a short drop which they couldnt sort of make right too...think they gave him a queens pardon(which im sure chuffed him to his knickers) ..very good, chilling and realistic film.

Not a bad series I agree.
I like to look for how they cover up modernity in the exterior shots. Usual trick for hiding white road markings and yellow lines is to smear a load of clay over them. Watched one the other day where they go to a boarding house and it had a coax TV cable running up the outside wall.

a marvellous bit of entertainment. just top class.. although not credited, kurt russell directed it too. oh, and all but one of the moustaches were in fact reall.lol

yeah they often get power towers etc in shots unfortunately.(there was a car driving about in one of Leones westerns etc) guess there isnt much chance of totally obliterating it all. but they do very well in general. even the sets they build often look pretty real

According to the book "Billy Gibbons: Rock & Roll Gearhead", ZZ Top was hanging around the set, and was asked to be the town band. During one take, the camera broke. While waiting for the camera to be repaired, Michael J. Fox asked if they would play "Hey Good Lookin'" which they did. Afterwards, more requests were played. Two hours later, someone inquired if the camera had been repaired. Robert Zemeckis replied that it had been fixed for quite a while, he just didn't want to stop the party that had evolved.

It's the same principle as "buy low, sell high", just with the actions performed in reverse order. This is available to most clients, in the sense that they borrow the security from the holdings of their brokerage houses. It doesn't seem like Winthorpe and Valentine have a house from which to borrow their F.C.O.J. contracts, but Winthorpe appears to have had the guts to short sell on the fly, knowing the consequences of a mistake. Winthorpe was trading on a cash basis, using cash collateral, which is why Coleman and Ophelia gave the two traders all their cash in the train station.

Three Sharps rifles were built for the film: one for shooting, one as a club in the fight scenes, and a back-up weapon in case one was damaged. In the scene where Quigley demonstrates the rifle, he mentions that the bullet is paper patched, which might sound like some Hollywood mumbo jumbo. However, it's an actual technique common in the mid- to late-1800's to maximize accuracy/ precision. A thin layer of paper is placed around the bullet which is then used by the barrel rifling to spin the bullet fast enough to stabilize it during flight.

During the filming of the scene where Maria attempts to escape through a canyon wired with dynamite, Claudia Cardinale (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001012)'s stunt double was badly injured during the explosion. Cardinale, who had never ridden a horse before, performed the stunt herself for the final cut, and escaped uninjured.
Despite the principal male actors being in their 50's (except for Lee Marvin, who was only 42), all of them insisted on performing their own stunts. However, only Woody Strode performed all of his stunts as there were no black stuntmen who came close to his height and stature. Burt Lancaster, who was 52 at the time, did most of his own stunts, including being hung upside down in Coyote Pass and running across the top of the moving train car. The studio balked, however, at Lancaster climbing the side of the cliff in the pass to plant the dynamite and a stuntman was substituted. Even though Palance was as tall as Strode, he had to use a stunt double for the scenes where he was wounded and fell off his horse, because falling the wrong way off a horse could lead to serious injuries.

The story is based on a real-life incident that occurred in 1941 on the Hebridean island of Eriskay when the SS Politician ran aground. The tale of how a group of local Scottish islanders raided a shipwreck for its consignment of 24,000 cases of whisky quickly became legend. What's less well reported, however, was the fact that the ship was also carrying a sizeable amount of hard cash. According to official files recently released by the Home Office, there were nearly 290,000 ten shilling notes on board as well (the equivalent of several million pounds in today's currency) not all of which was ever recovered.
American censors of the day insisted on a coda being inserted at the end of the film stating that the stolen whisky brought nothing but unhappiness to the islanders, even though quite the opposite was true in real life.

The word "humbug" provides insight into Ebenezer Scrooge's hatred of Christmas, as it describes deceitful efforts to fool people by pretending to a fake loftiness or false sincerity. Therefore, when Scrooge calls Christmas a humbug, he is claiming that people only pretend to be charitable and kind in an effort to delude him, each other, and themselves. In Scrooge's eyes, he is the one man who is honest enough to admit that no one really cares about anyone else, so (to him) every wish for a Merry Christmas is one more deceitful effort to fool him and take advantage of him. This is a man who has turned to profit because he honestly believes everyone else will someday betray him or abandon him the moment he trusts them.

The film was based loosely on a play by Roger MacDougall which had never been produced on stage at the time the film was made. Enjoyable little film. Like most British films not a great deal happens, perhaps that is part of the charm Ciaran Hinds as "Pop" is great, as is (as always) Judi Dench. Didn't get to the end feeling like I'd lost 2 hours of my life.

When the squad reach the deserted farmhouse, Corporal Binns (John Mills (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0590055/?ref_=tt_trv_gf)) approaches the door and attempts to kick it open. He clearly doesn't get enough purchase on it and the door barely moves, however it continues to open on its own. Mills actually realises whats happening and pushes his rifle into the door in an attempt to disguise that the door is being pulled open from the inside.
Sir John Mills was fifty-years-old at the time of filming. The British Expeditionary Force in France in 1940 were a professional army, not conscripts (conscription (the draft) only began after Dunkirk to recoup numbers) therefore, Sir John Mills would be beyond the retirement age for a soldier, and would have been considered too old even for conscription, the maximum age being forty-five. The only soldiers aged fifty or above would have been senior officers, not frontline soldiers, and certainly not Corporals.

In 1929, a westbound Orient Express train was stuck in snow for five days at Çerkezköy, approximately one hundred thirty kilometers (eighty-one miles) from Istanbul, Turkey. This incident inspired the setting of the book and movie.
'Albie' Finney's tour de force 8 page solution was filmed several times from different angles as set wasn't big enough to do it in one take. His makeup took so long to do that an ambulance picked him up, 'asleep' each morning and while sleeping they applied much of it while on route to the set.

Scrooge's headstone prop can still be visited at Saint Chad's Churchyard in Shrewsbury, where the cemetery sequence was shot. The production team found the stone, apparently blank, and gained permission to have it inscribed. This was left in place at the end of the shoot.
This is probably the only version of 'A Christmas Carol' in which Scrooge wears dress pants with a dress shirt, vest, and smoking jacket instead of his nightshirt, slippers, and cap. I watched it, despite already having it on DVD. It is a far closer depiction of the way MI5/6 worked in the '60, than the utter fantasy that is the James Bond franchise.
