View Full Version : Now Screening - What Are You Watching Right Now?
Superb film the thing, which was initially slated and put forward as one of the worst ever films In the day.
Lol.
Now tonight it's Deep Impact 1998.
This is a merger of screenplay ideas.. The remake of when world's collide and a production of Arthur C Clarke's The Hammer of God..
Came out same year as Armageddon. Both faired well and made very good profits.

His survival became a morale-boosting legend – “the 12th man” who defied the Nazis.

Harriet
http://t0.gstatic.com/images?q=tbn:ANd9GcRXgaquxN97KIyA9n23iYwccNhQ5n_5d v67J0xwg5PmfxWse_OE
Based on the life of Harriet Tubman. A female slave who escaped and walked to freedom in Pennsylvania, but felt compelled to return to rescue her family. The film starts before the American civil war and ends after the war. Harriet took part in the war, and at its end she had personally been instrumental in the rescue of 750 slaves.
At times a difficult watch, less so than 'Seven Years a Slave'; but I was close to tears at the end. Not a good look at a cinema, however I managed to compose myself before we left.
The US Treasury were going to release a $20 note with Harriet's image on the back - but Donald Trump has veto'd it!
Night Train To Munich. 1940.directed by Carol Reed.
Sometimes classed as a remake of the lady Vanishes, it's probably more of a sequel.
Very similar story and characterisations.
Rex Harrison stars along with Margaret Lockwood https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191130/b554d3be86fb61369d5b00e8d5681daf.jpg
Still in propaganda. A year later this film from Powell and Press burger, and stars Raymond Massey, Lawrence Olivier, Leslie Howard and Anton Walbrook.
Won an Oscar too..
The 49th Parallel. 1941...released the year later in the US as The Invaders.
This was an attempt to sway us opinion and bring them into war. The main actors took half pay and donated rest to the Red Cross if memory serves.
It's kinda a bit like the ten little Indians.
The nazi speach about inuits being sub human was deleted in the American version.
A very important filmhttps://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191130/51c29860eac8de779beba30a1a3bf19d.jpg
Forgot Eric Portman. He plays the arch baddie
Still in the past here, and Jamaica Inn 1939, stars Robert Newton, Maureen O'Hara, Leslie Banks and Charles Laughton. Dircted by Alfred Hitchcock. Adapted from the book by Daphne du Maurier.
https://i.ytimg.com/vi/S8nCgfpXwtM/hqdefault.jpg
This is a period film, set in Cornwall in 1819. Although it did well at the box office both the critics and Hitchcock himself hated it. Certainly not a patch on the book, and much of the issues were due to Laughton being wrong for the part but as he was also producing it, he wrote himself into a role he wasnt supposed to get.
Still its great and dramatic Cornwall scenery. O'hara did so well in Laughton's eyes he cast her as Esmaralda in the Hunchback; she became a huge star hence.
Made in 2013, The Wipers Times.

Tonight's movie extravaganza is The Good, The Bad and the Ugly. 1966. Sergio Leone directs.
What's to say? One of the top 10 westerns ever. In the top 100 ever and Quentin Tarantino said it was the best directed film ever. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20191202/033704aa1ded96d6d42cbd4680c9e224.jpg

No beast so fierce but knows some touch of pity.... But I know none, and therefore am no beast.
One of director Billy Wilder’s most frenetic comedies, the madcap Cold War and corporate politics satire One, Two, Three has to be one of the only films almost capable of making its Wilder predecessors Some Like It Hot and The Apartment seem sedately paced in comparison. Featuring a hilarious lead performance by James Cagney (apparently so exhausted by the rapid-fire pace that he then retired for twenty years!), One, Two, Three hasn’t always been as famous as Wilder’s other comedies, but it’s among his best.

'Set in 1960s Las Vegas, the series centres on Sheriff Ralph Lamb (Quaid) and his dealings with Chicago mobster Vincent Savino (Chiklis), who moved west to set up his own operation. The Lamb character is based on a real-life former rancher of the same name who served as Sheriff of Clark County from 1961 to 1979.'

Jack Black is IMO the star of the film.
Adapted from a novella by James M. Cain (The Postman Always Rings Twice), co-written by Wilder and Raymond Chandler (The Big Sleep, The Long Goodbye), Double Indemnity, 1944, remains the hardest-boiled of delectations. & 7 Oscar nominations too.. 'Trippers Day' with Leonard Rossiter, the very first episode: "Special Offers". This was very short lived TV series from the early 80's they only made a handful of em. However it was better than the programme re-introduction under 'Slingers Day' with Bruce Forsythe taking over the leading roll..

A number of Cornish locals were cast as extras etc in film too.

Directed by Roy Ward Baker. https://uploads.tapatalk-cdn.com/20200117/ff1cc40f728ecaa95f7c7d6be4dbe9ab.jpgThought it was him as soon as I saw the poster. Really liked him in Where Eagles Dare (although as it also has Anton Diffring who I love he wasn't the best German [emoji16])
Anton, yes I remember him. Usually played the evil nazi.
Oddly he left Germany before the war as he was gay and was being persecuted.

Yup, I'd agree. Quite good, yes, but not a patch on the original! The characters in the original were stronger/more convincing and the overall atmosphere much more eerie.

Yes, the Bram Stoker estate sued over Murnau's adaptation, but as you say thankfully a few copies escaped - I've seen it several times. Today it would be criticised for suggestions of anti-semitism.
The 1979 'remake' starring Klaus Kinski, whilst interesting, is not a patch on Murnau's 1922 original.
Tonight it's the usa war drama, Airforce 1943, directed by Howard Hawks and starring John Garfield, John Ridgely, Gig Young, Arthur Kennedy, and Harry Carey.
Quite well made this. Fast paced and decent action concerning the attack on Pearl by the Japanese navy

Ghost Ship is awful, Splice on the other hand is a good film.
Yes, I'd have to agree with your assessment of Ghost ship... Crass, 'B' movie bollox, and cringy too, but not in the right way! I'm surprised that Granty rated it - oi you!;)
Never mind, the charity shop benefited from the £1... I'll watch Splice tonight. If it's decent, as you say, then being a Blu-ray, it'll be a Billy Bargain:)

I didn't rate Splice too much.
Ghost Ship may have been rubbish, but another ship based movie, Triangle, is worth a look, if you can keep up with the twisty plot.

I thought Triangle was a drama series about folk working on a North Sea ferry. The plot wasn't so much twisty, more like cack I would say. :( Although the boat often put in a stellar performance. In all kinds of weather.

Lol.... Part of the fun though of a charity shop punt! I'll simply move it onto another charity shop, so at least they'll benefit. I'd normally only buy Blu-rays, and also films I know I'll like, certainly when paying proper money for them:)

Anna is a bereft young German woman whose fiance, Frantz, was killed in the trenches of World War I. Adrien, a French veteran of the war, makes a mysterious appearance in her town, placing flowers on Frantz's grave. Adrien's presence is met with resistance by the small community still reeling from Germany's defeat, yet Anna gradually becomes closer to the handsome and melancholy young man, as she learns of his deep friendship with Frantz.

I rather like these moody/atmospheric, slightly dark French dramas, and which portray a somewhat poignant political message.

Ozon makes some thoughtful films. Saw 'Frantz' at my film club - it's the sort of film I like to see: a foreign language film in B&W (well partly in this case).
