Yes that was indeed it... Yes it was ok, but nothing startling....I will look out maybe for the dvd I think as its unlikely to be on tv in the rest of my lifetime with the channels I have lol
As opposed to the dead pool...thought initially it was the big Clintvfilm... Heard someone talking about it a few days ago.
My grandkids will likely want to see it as he is masked
having a carry-on night again. Corny but all good fun, and over 50 years on some of them, they still hold up well.... currently have Screaming on.
Dan Dann's toilets at Hopcombe Park were actually the south entrance of Pinewood Studio s in Iver Heath.
Private Shultz, from early 80's a tv series about German forgery during the war if I remember correctly.. not seen this for some time.... Stars Michael Elphick and Ian Richardson.

Love that film, don't know how many times I have watched it.
Of special interest to the hi-fi enthusiast too, as it reveals how Krell got started.

Michael Crichton's First great train robbery from 1979, and starring such notables as Donald Sutherland, Lesley-Anne Down and Big Shamus Connery. Small but notable appearances from Wayne Sleep and Michael Elphick. Always liked this film, so another viewing will be grand.

After a short break back to my Hill Street Blues marathon.
In order to avoid contaminating my purity I have not been watching anything else, for three weeks now.
Nearing the end of Season 6, so only one more to go. Some more 'before they were famous' moments: Tim Robbins crops up as a rookie cop and a very young Andy Garcia appears as a disgruntled gang member.
Neither makes it through their respective episodes.
Also Lawrence Tierney, best known as Joe Cabot from Reservoir Dogs, and an actor famous for not taking any shit from anyone, makes a couple of appearances as the night shift Sargent.
After watching over 100 episodes I'm starting to run out of steam a bit, must confess. It is an all-time great show, though.
After a discussion today I got the urge lol
So it's Jeeves n Wooster series 1

Vikings - Season One (missed most of it first time round) on H2
Watching Pulp Fiction. Managed to avoid this film, but thought I would give it ago. I like some of Quentin's movies but this one just doesn't appeal to me. Everyone rates it so...... we'll see.
Hobson's Choice, adapted from Harold Brighouse's 1915 stage comedy by David Lean in 1954, starring Charles Laughton as Hobson, and John Mills as Will Mossop. John Lawrie has a small role as a doctor, and roles of Hobson's daughters are made up from Brenda De Banzie, Prunella Scales and Daphne Anderson. One of the great films ever made in my opinion.

I have problems with films that make violence 'chic'. Loathed Reservoir Dogs and couldn't be bothered to watch Kill Bill II, but Pulp Fiction does have its moments, and the interweaving story lines are clever.

It was my fav one of his. Tarantino is not overly high on my list due to what Barry says... too much flippant violence, for the sake of, and to be cool. I dont mind a bit but it can just be overdone.
Of course Vikings had to have violence in as it was "what they did", but it probably was overdone too, to grab the viewers.
Ignore me I'm just getting old
It is cartoon violence - hyper-real. The film knows it is a film.
Yes that sounds really pretentious but I can't think of a better way of putting it. How about: Tarantino makes films for film lovers who are a bit jaded.
My favourite is Jackie Brown which coincidentally has hardly any violence in it.
You might like that one Neil if you haven't seen it already.

Escape Plan from 2013, starring Sly Stallone and Big Arn... Excellent film this, with a fair bit of violence, although I guess it was needed for the script to work. Also roles for Sam Neil, Vinnie Jones and Vincent D'Onofrio.

I am on Season 2 of Vikings and really enjoying it. Seems the main character has some historical credibility of being a real person Ragnar Lodbrok, and weirdly the two Viking bad guys in Bernard Cornwell's The Last Kingdom series recently, Ivar the Boneless and Ubba on the BBC were Ragnar's sons.

Criterion Eclipse Series box Kinoshita and World War II
17026
The Living Magoroku
17027
Propaganda piece by Keisuke Kinoshita, his second film made in 1943.
Despite the fact that this film was made to comply with a government directive about cinema highlighting the importance of Japan's wartime agricultural production, Kinoshita manages at times to tap into a broader view of Japan and her culture pitting wartime expediency against rural superstition.
Onagi, a sickly and self-obsessed man too frail to serve in the military gradually rises to a broader sense of self and to a growing awareness of the Yamato-damashii or Japanese Spirit. The symbolic bridge between the past and present is exemplified by two examples of the samurai sword, one, a famous blade forged by Magoroku in the 16th century, the other is one being made for an officer shortly leaving for the front who vows to wield it to great effect against the '...weakling Americans...'.
In the end modernisation trumps the old superstition in the form of a curse on the males of the Onagi line should they allow an old battle site owned by the family to be farmed. The cultivation of the hitherto hallowed field begins so as to provide more food for Japan's war effort.
Certainly not the greatest Japanese film but it does at times manage to escape the constraints imposed by the wartime nationalist state.
No smutch on those that do enjoy Scorsese's work, Grant. It is just that his films don't seem to make any impact on my imagination. Mean Streets was the film I enjoyed most by him. He comes across as a very likeable man with whom one would be happy to get sozzled.
Yeah i get that john. I loved goodfellas tbh and most of his films are enjoyable to me.. Loved leones fistful of dynamite and g.b. ugly too. Plus the music on many of his is super. Not seen kinoshita
Reach for the Sky (1956) starring Douglas Bader as Kenneth More ;) ...lol yes, probably the role that made More a real star and thrust Bader into the limelight ... Great WW2 story this and a true tale of achievement

Barbara Windsor (1937), who appeared in 10 Carry Ons, is 78. Jim Dale (1935) appeared in 11 Carry Ons and is now 80. Think thats the only 2 of the semi regulars alive Andre. Cavalcanti directs an adaptation of a short story by Graham Greene. A favourite film, for me this is a tribute to the determination and resilience of my Grandparents' generation who stood firm when the whole world thought they were done for. Super theme tune by William Walton (from 'A Wartime Sketchbook' (1941/2)) and excellent performances all round. Even features our own Gloucestershire Regiment as extras. The script's a corker too ~
Charles Sims (Church warden): 'Look funny don't they? German names in an English churchyard...They wanted England those Jerries did. [Motions with his pipe at the graves] Yes, that's the only bit of England they got!'
Mrs Fraser: 'Do you know what "morale" is, George?'
George Truscott, boy: 'Yeah, it's summat what the Wops ain't got.'
Great film. I've got it in my treasures section

True...i cross mine, and im not English;)
I cross mine too, must confess. Saves mistakes.
I just find it funny that they would think to pick up on that, that it was so outlandish that you would cross a seven it raises suspicion right away. You or I would be right in it: you don't even know that they think your a German and next thing you've got old mother hubbard coming at you with a meat cleaver.

The Cruel Sea. Jack Hawkins, Donald Sinden, Denholm Elliott and Stanley Baker are the top stars along with the lovely Virginia McKenna as the leggy lovely, I think it was.
Released in 1953 and directed by Charles Frend who also gave us The Long Arm, and Scott of the Antartic. Based on the fabulous book by Nicholas Monsarrat. The film was shot on location in the Plymouth's Naval Dockyard and the English Channel. Scenes showing the sailors in the water were shot in the open-air water-tank at Denham Studios.
The film was both a commercial and critical success, especially in the United States.

Just finished watching 'Lost in Paradise'. One of the Jesse Stone TV movie series, starring Tom Selleck. An absolute treat! The quality of acting is sensational and the direction and screenplay dialogue faultless. Selleck is responsible for the production, direction and no doubt much more. Some may say these films are slow, I think of them as measured and beautifully paced. The mood gets quite intense and the character studies are amongst the best. Lovely stuff.

As for the survival bit. I reckon I'd probably be OK. I know a bit about it. In fact I have copies of 'Come Back Alive' and 'The Survival Handbook' on the bookshelf right in front of me :D.
The original Survivors was really good. Scary when you were a child. I saw some of the episodes again last year and concluded I was really way to young to be watching it back then. That and 'Day of The Triffids from around the same time both quite disturbed me.
Been watching 'The Factory' 2010 film with John Cusak as a homicide cop hunting down a serial killer. One of those where there is always a twist near the end. I didn't guess it. Cusak is always good, even in crappy films.

Frequency
https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51YY7ZCEEPL._SY445_.jpg
Frequency is really two different--though inextricably linked--movies. First, the emotional drama of a father and son reunited after 30 years of separation. Then there is a science fiction thriller, in which a couple of chance solar storms, occurring exactly 30 years apart, can provide the agency through which the father and son can communicate using the very same ham radio in parallel time frames of 1969 and 1999. The son is John Sullivan (Jim Caviezel), a cop, and his father is Frank (Dennis Quaid), a firefighter who died on the job when John was six, which just happens to be tomorrow for Frank when he and his now-adult son begin talking across time. This is great for John, because now he can warn his dad about the upcoming fire and avert the catastrophe that left him fatherless for most of his life. Accomplishing this gives John new memories of his life with Dad, but unfortunately alters the course of a serial killer, with tragic effect on John's family history. Since John is a cop, and the case he's working on turns out to be the same unsolved case from 30 years before, he and his father work together over the ham radio to solve the case and hopefully avert the tragedy that befell their family. Time-travel stories have always been problematic, demanding either an extra degree of credulity on the part of the audience or an extra level of explanation on the part of storytellers, which is invariably cumbersome. Frequency handles the troublesome time paradoxes by having John explain how, having altered his past, he now experiences both timelines, as if he's had two pasts that converge in his present. And as changes continue to be wrought in John's past, we see him becoming more and more confused. No doubt the audience can sympathise, at least those of us who try to follow the ramifications of the rapidly accruing time fractures. Luckily, the bond between father and son is so strongly realised in the deeply felt performances of both Caviezel and Quaid that you don't even need to consider the science fiction elements in order to enjoy the film. But if you can suspend your disbelief long enough to allow for the possibility of time shifts, you will have a far richer experience. --Jim Gay, Amazon.com

Hmm. There is certainly nothing 'extra terrestrial' about them (or anything else, apart from maybe radiation and meteors).
Big argument ensues.....................
Some are hoaxes of course but there are substantial differences between those and the unexplainable ones. A very strange thing.
Last night we watched Luis Bunuel's surreal comedy 'The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie' (1972), about a group of friends in France who get together for meals that they never get to eat. Funnier than it sounds.
I'm an admirer of Luis Bunuel, think I have seen all of his output at one time or another.
I'm an admirer of Luis Bunuel, think I have seen all of his output at one time or another.
Same here. I first saw 'The Discreet Charm..' at the university cinema society not long after it was released. I was mad keen on foreign films in those days; in retrospect I wonder whether I liked them because they were foreign rather than for their intrinsic merit. (Obviously some genuinely were cinematic masterpieces).
Not overly big on foreign language films(American aside). That said ive seen some very good ones too. The seven samurai and red rivers...forgot there correct names.. Were excellent. The French do some well made and interesting films on occasion. Alas not speaking the lingo is always a hindrance a!d strain to my old eyes
I love foreign language films. Hungarian, black and white - Barry Heaven!
I like Alain Delon's films but not a fan of those French flics where it is just people talking in rooms for 2 hours.
What's interesting too is which English-languages films foreigners like. As well as the usual suspects (Hitchcock, John Ford, John Huston) the French were very keen on more obscure directors like Nicholas Ray and Budd Boetticher. They also loved the poetry of Edgar Allen Poe, who in the UK is regarded as a bit of a lightweight.
Weirdly, the Americans loved Benny Hill and Are You Being Served. Must be that subtle, understated British humour.
...and Albanians loved Norman Wisdom. Mind you, communism had a lot to do with it, but none the less, he was a God there
...and Albanians loved Norman Wisdom. Mind you, communism had a lot to do with it, but none the less, he was a God there
I kind of like the idea of a Supreme Being who's clumsy and wears ill-fitting clothes. If man really is made in God's image, there's proof of His existence walking around most streets.

The Railway Man - awful but wonderful. Wanted to see it for awhile and it was worth the wait. Beautiful film. Mans cruelty to man, one mans forgiveness of another.

You may know it. If you don't that's okay, but you should probably watch more films. :)
Only a few films are resilient to repeated watching. I think it is fair to say this is one of them.

Yeah. Good movie that.
Sadly, I must be the only person in the Universe who loathed that film.
Wasn't one of mine either.only seen it once though
Watching last 3 episodes of Survivors. Certainly worth the watching again. interesting in those days at least the middle class were the only honest, intelligent ones, and the poor were lazy, thick and murderous....especially every Scot(even the Kid).... and the rich wanted to get richer and federalise everyone to their way of thinking
...the times have not really changed attitude wise.

Sadly, I must be the only person in the Universe who loathed that film.
It has a seedy and grimy hopelessness about it that appealed to me.
Just finished Ep 19 of Law and Order season 1.
...now The School for Scoundrels from 1960 and starring Ian Carmichael, Terry-Thomas, Janette Scott and Alastair Sim. Peter Ustinov wrote some of the screenplay for this minor masterpiece.
Made at Elstree Studios and premiered at the Warner Theatre in Leicester Square, London on 24 March 1960, where it ran for a month.
The two salesmen (Dennis Price and Peter Jones), who sell him a ramshackle 1924 "Swiftmobile" were characters from a radio show some years earlier and their catch phrase of "run for it" was reused.

One of my favourites, that. Everyone in it gives perfect performances and the script is genius.
Now Paul the Alien; the uncut version. much better for it too.;) great film and soundtrack

The last thing I watched was a God-awful 'supernatural' programme called The Living and the Dead. Utter shite from start to finish.

Withnail's great. I've seen it twice in the cinema, and I've lost count of how many times on videotape/DVD.
It is very hard to pin down what makes it so good. A total one-off. Improves with every watching, like a good album improves with every listen.

I get the same thing with 'Miami Blues' too. The guy (Alec Baldwin) is nuts and a total loser all the way through, but it's a magic movie.

Try Luka's Child on You Tube, biggest load of rubbish I have ever flicked through. I have no idea how crap like that gets made, made the Troma films studios output look good and that's saying something. Smart TV You tube channel recommended it, why I do not know - how do such algorithms work

I bought a laptop off Amazon recently. Now they e-mail me daily trying to persuade me to buy another laptop. Not a carry case or a bluetooth mouse or an external disc drive or any other accessories I might actually be interested in given that I have just bought a laptop. No, instead they want me to buy another of the thing I have just bought. It is actually the least likely purchase I might make right now and they know this
Algorithms my arse.
'Treasure Of The Sierra Madre'
Simple rule of films: If Humphrey Bogart is in it then it is almost certainly worth a watch. Three blokes go high up into the titular mountains to pan for gold. What could possibly go wrong? The answer is: quite a lot.

One of my favs too Martin. Gold, like women, is always a recipe for trouble
I'm watching Trouble in Store from 1953, and stars Norman Wisdom, Jerry Desmonde as the baddy and Moira Lister; with Megs Jenkins and Margaret Rutherford in support.

Sadly cost of production is no indication of the quality of the final result. It certainly attracted attention and interest at the time,
Quite enjoying it at moment
'Citizen Kane'. Seen it loads of times, but haven't watched it for 15 years or so. Very good, but perhaps not quite as good as it's sometimes hyped up to be.

Decent enough. But not a masterpiece like Orson's 'The Third Man', which is a fav of mine.

And of mine. I can see why Citizen Kane was such a hit with the critics when it came out because of its innovative techniques, but as a 'story' to me it lacks cohesion.

It was better than 'The Magnificent Ambersons', which I thought tedious.

Fabulous, in its way, and well worth the admittance money :) Still got a grin on my face and the superb musical score did it no harm

Lord yes. I sat through that once; never again.
Decent enough. But not a masterpiece like Orson's 'The Third Man', which is a fav of mine.
It was directed by Carol Reed, Orson Wells played the part of the 'Third Man', whereas Wells both directed and acted in 'Citizen Kane'. Both films have their merits, and both are rightly (IMO) regarded as being amongst the best films ever made.
I've got both on DVDs. Prefer the 3rd man myself but both are excellent
'A Touch Of Evil' - that's Orson's masterpiece if you ask me. Not that anyone did...

I have 'The Third Man' on DVD, but not 'Citizen Kane'. Would do, if I found cheap copy. Mind you I have over 200 DVDs, which need thinning out, so have a self-imposed moratorium on any further additions.
Aye, I don't get many either now. More inclined to get a digital copy. The Boy still gets some(he has multiple hundreds). If they come with a digital copy I get that as his broadband is useless.
Really amusing Canadian off beat comedy series.
Have to watch each episode twice to get the nuances.

I much prefer the TV adaptation to the later film version. The film is not bad (I have it on DVD), but the 11-part TV series is much closer to the book.
Bought in a charity shop: £3.00 for 12 discs.

Ahhhhhh now we are talking :) Season two is very good Grant. RTE2 here have been showing it, I missed the last part of Season 1 but got into Season two easily enough. This Tuesday RTE show the final part of the season, Battle of Culloden.... we know how that ended. Looks like its been renewed for a third and fourth season. At one point it looked like it would not be.
Took a while to get into it, and initially thought id missed a series.
Now airplaying hotel Transylvania in hd from flixster... Love this film.
'Sliding Doors', a romcom from 1997 starring Gwyneth Paltrow and John Hannah. Saw it at the cinema when it came out, and my opinion is unchanged; worth seeing, but not worth going to see. John Hannah's character is extremely annoying, whether intentionally or accidentally I dunno.

back with this and just watched ep 3. seems well paced although it does get complex at times with time lines etc. Fair bit of nudity too so not for certain eyes.
Just now moving to Blackadder series 4... the Army one
Amazon has there prime day today, so being a member ive picked up £56 of digital videos for under £15. Not bad at all.
First 2 seasons of nypd blue, ghostbusters original fim and the revenant. That,ll keep me busy along with what ive got earmarked.
Apple had a lot of stuff too, but Amazon was better priced and i can watch it both up and downstairs as ive 2 boxes
I had a look but couldn't find anything I actually need. There is a T-amp rated 75 watt at 40% off which was tempting.
Me too. Tempted with the £30 off a new kindle, but Ive got plenty E readers tbh. Paperwhite would be nice though. I will no doubt regret it and my kindle will go pop tomorrow lol...had it for years

Didn't hold too many hopes on that, but it was very good. Probably the best film Cruise has been in that Ive seen.
Better than The Colour Of Money and Rain Man?
I certainly enjoyed it more. Its a sort of violent army si fi version of Groundhog Day. Decent humour too.
Never been a fan of Tom Cruise, but I was impressed by his performance in 'Rain Man'.
