Leslie Howard stars as a modern day Scarlet Pimpernel(Prof Smith) in this ww2 propaganda masterpiece from 1941. Based on the novel from Baron Orczy, this PIMPERNEL SMITH, is a smashing film co starring the immense Francis Sullivan Hugh Macdermott and the lovely Mary Morris . Howard was to tragically die during the war when the plane he was in was shot down (he was reputed to be a British spy and used his acting position as cover)

I didn't Geoff. She was a lovely woman and a good actress. I remember her playing Jean Brodie and miss Marple.... Shame; she must have been a goodish age though..

Been on Holiday all week & all week the wife has been watching a certain morning programme that involves DNA Tests & Polygraph tests..What i have noticed is how many people do the dirty on their partners!
I understand only Ducks & Wood Pigeons are suppose to be 100% faithful to each other but for crying out loud..Im the first to admit my eyes are all over the place when a nice piece of totty walks by but id never ever dream of doing the dirty on the missus..

slightly offkilter sci fi from the BBC first shown in the mid 60s to early 70s and not seen since.
the boxset is just released by the good folks at BFI and contains all the remaining episodes....many were wiped as was the policy in the bad old 70s.
the set comes with a fairly substantial booklet detailing the origins of the the show and full episode guides.
groovy RADIOPHONIC WORKSHOP soundtracks are of course the norm!!!!

Yes it was, on Film4 , last film from that studios maestro animator.
One of the best! The screenplay is well written - there's not a wasted word anywhere.
The restored Bluray is well worth the getting. this picture is superb; incredible contrasts- and yes not only acted superbly but the screenplay is fabulous.
Can't sleep so watching Sea of Sand starring Dick Attenborough

Better call Saul is good. 2 episodes in and I'm hooked
Quigley down Under (1990). an Aussie western starring Tom Selleck as Quigley, the sharpshooter with the bfg... a Sharps Buffalo gun, and Alan Rickman as the unequivocally mad bad rancher who hired him. Plenty of comic moments and much to ponder too re treatment of the Aborigines .
A top film for me and one of the best Selleck and Rickman made imo.

Back to the Future (1985) starring Michael J Fox and Chris Lloyd. Robert Zemeckis's classic start of the trilogy of time travel is probably still the best of the 3.
Universal Pictures head Sid Sheinberg did not like the title "Back to the Future", insisting that nobody would see a movie with "future" in the title. In a memo to Robert Zemeckis, he said that the title should be changed to "Spaceman From Pluto", tying in with the Marty-as-alien jokes in the film, and also suggested further changes like replacing the "I'm Darth Vader from planet Vulcan" line with "I am a spaceman from Pluto!" Sheinberg was persuaded to change his mind by a response memo from Steven Spielberg, which thanked him for sending a wonderful "joke memo", and that everyone got a kick out of it. Sheinberg, too proud to admit he was serious, gave in to letting the film retain its title.

Fabulous and moving account of Dunkirk, seen from the eyes of those trapped on the beaches and those who aided them - those who piloted the little ships - mostly civilians.
Having spoken with a guy who served as a volunteer and was among those last to get off the beaches I personally find this film more difficult to watch at times, than I did before speaking with him.

Good film that. restoration is reasonable but the reflections in places show the problems in some types of lighting.

Carry on at Your Convenience (1971)..... A tale of industrial strife at WC Boggs' Lavatory factory. Vic Spanner is the union rep who calls strikes at the drop of a hat, much to the workforces chagrin. They all come back for the works outing though....sounds familiar. :lol:
The usual crew along with Kenneth Cope, Patsy Rowlands, Geoff Hughes and Bill Maynard make up the cast and Jacki Piper adds the glamour

One of my favorite films of any generation.

Guy Hamilton's 1955 wartime escape classic "The Colditz Story" starring John Mills, Lionel Jeffries, Bryan Forbes and Eric Portman. Sir Christopher Rhodes, 3rd baronet, plays Mac McGill. he was a bit of a war hero himself winning the Croix de Guerre and the United States Legion of Merit.

Cheating I know but this review from an Amazon purchaser sums it up for me:
You'll have to excuse me but I'm going to be one of those bores who say "it isn't as good as the book". Being a bit of a weighty tome the book was always going to be a bit tricky to translate onto the screen and this adaptation suggests that a lot of the original scenes were cut out. If I hadn't read the novel, and therefore known the plot, I would have been thinking to myself "what the hell's going on" at the start of the film. That aside, it's still a marvellous story and Ralph Fiennes and Cate Blanchett provide almost the same Oscar and Lucinda that my imagination had conjured up. The main reason why I've marked the film down is that the original ending has been changed. We are let down gently rather than having to suffer the full force of life's injustice slapped across our face. A compromise has been made to cater for a crowd pleasing (fairly) happy ending.
Despite the leading actors, both of whom I greatly admire, I’m only giving it 5/10. It could well go back to the charity shop.

:lolsign: I usually use a spray gun for paint finished but i can't this time..However my paint work was top notch when i used Harris Natual bristle brushes.. I can put money on it the wife will say you need a shrink i can't see any. :doh:

Told mainly through an older Hoover reciting back his life story, it’s a conventional structure that allows Eastwood to cherry-pick some of the most interesting moments from the controversial life of the man who was the first director of the modern day FBI.
J. Edgar, as a movie, is sometimes a little too cautious for its own good, sidestepping one or two areas of its subject’s life. But in the title role, Leonardo DiCaprio is in excellent form. Sometimes weighed down by ageing make-up, but always able to hold the screen, it’s his central performance that’s the compelling reason to watch the movie. Judi Dench has less to work with as his mother, although Armie Hammer fares better as Clyde Tolson, the man who may or may not have been Hoover’s lover.
The disc release does dig into Hoover a little bit more, with a feature exploring the complexity of the man. At the very least, it serves as a starting point to find out more about one of the most fascinating people in modern American history. The film and disc certainly scratch the surface on him, and there’s plenty here to like and admire. They do leave you with a lot more to discover, though… --Jon Foster

I watched that as well Barry. Was not overly impressed tbh. Di caprio was more like himself than Hoover and the story missed most of his character for me. Much preferred him in the likes of gangs of new york and even titanic.
I am still watching Black Sails....its pretty decent if you get the chance to watch.

I remember reading about the murders, and it was also in one of Ken Burns documentaries... (America I think) . A shocking affair that the Mormans like to play down for obvious reasons. Not seen this film though but its started promisingly.
A sad and distasteful film/ well, event in history, and just reinforces my despair of religion in the wrong hands.
Porridge the movie. Harry Neilson s without you and hit me with your rhythm stick by ...I've er forgot doh. 2 great tracks and super acting from Ronnie Barker and Co.
Winchester 73 from 1950. the film that saved Jimmy Stewarts career this and an excellent one too with Dan Duryea and Shelley Winters. also appearing in small roles that I never noticed before is Tony Curtis as a cavalryman and Rock Hudson as an Indian war chief.

Perfect Storm on TCM HD, feel wet just watching it
War and remembrance disc 1..........then an epp of the Simpsons(Homer becomes a bounty hunter)......now Bosch episodes 6 and 7. It is a great series.....and just started a Time team.This box has allowed me a more varied diet of shows that are a worth the watching and at no cost to me................its a win win situation

Its a very hard watch Grant, at times very moving but very good.
If you dont mind subtitles White Tiger is very good too.
I think the hardest one i saw was Come and See. a 1985 film by Elem Klimov. I had to take a break half way through.

My grand daughters were once again watching The Wizard of Oz on More 4 earlier. It never ceases to amaze me how good this film is, considering it was made in 1939.

So it's not just me? I've had internet issues tonight. Couldn't get Google and other sites several times and that was on two different PCs. I did a W7 reinstall on one earlier as it was needed and still had browsing problems afterwards on two different browsers. Must be a 'net' problem (or is it the weather?).
Dont know, may be a line based web problem. I posted elsewhere how I got round it.
Operation Mincemeat. the documentary version of the fooling of the Germans about where they would attack the Axis powers....It worked superbly.
Finally got around to watching 'Tyrannosaur' - superb work by all concerned
Peter Mullan and Olivia Colman are always immensely watchable in whatever they do but in this their performances were absolutely gripping and intensely moving.
Drums Along the Mohawk....Henry Fonda and Claudette Corbert ....1939 I think and certainly hasnt aged much. lovely print

Fabulous series, I was watching it on RTE until the mid season break now I fear I won't be able to watch the rest, down with Amazon, Netflix etc boo hiss.
The Garrison Commander episode is very violent.

First film was very good but this has no story as such just fighting, killing and not much else. Stick with the first one and give this a miss would be my advice.

Just unearthed a few charity shop DVDs I've not watched. I tried to watch something called 'Cabin Fever' and had to turn it of. It fell somewhere between dismal and abysmal. I've now put on 'The Cave'. It looks a bit better, we'll see.

Spoof within a spoof, imagine a James Herbert style horror writer wrote a series for TV in the 1980's and it got rejected for being crap. He gets a chance later to show it on early Channel 4 and tell everyone how great he is (and he's not) and how great his rejected TV show was...
Silly but absolutely brilliant, early work for Matt Berry and "Moss" from the IT Crowd.
Shoddy sets, dubbed dialogue terrible (pretend) acting...

Storm over the Nile (1955) Anthony Steel and Laurence harvey star, with James Robertson Justice in this very likable adventure film remake of the four feathers....The book was very different but that doesnt take away from the film. The older version was better , but they share many of the war scenes
'Milius' - Documentary film about writer and director John Milius (Apocalypse Now, Conan The Barbarian).
Fascinating film about a larger than life character. Interesting in that he reckons that Red Dawn, despite being a huge box-office success, destroyed his career in right-on Hollywood. Although the stars and other directors interviewed in the film seem to think it was more to do with his habit of toying with a loaded Colt 45 pistol during meetings...
Its a great way to get your project made though..."what do you think mate" while stoking a loaded pistol :eyebrows:

Yep - according to the documentary this did work in his favour on occasion.
When making Apocalypse Now he wasn't happy with Martin Sheen's voiceover - 'too light' - so he gave Sheen said weapon and told him to hold it whilst recording. Sheen is vehmently anti-firearms and it made him very nervous but it apparantly added the required 'edginess' to the voiceover.

Just watched both of the early 70s made for TV films kolchak The Night Stalker and The Night Strangler. Excellent noir horror stories, written by Richard Matheson, featuring a hardened and hard done by news reporter, acted by Darren Mcgavin.
Well worth watching again and I will be giving the TV series ago too. Saw this all years ago but despite their age they hold up well, great writing stands the test of time.

I have only seen it from episode 6 coming to it late but that Episode The Garrison Commander is a hard watch.

'Olympus Has Fallen'
Basically a Die hard re-make with The White House substituting for Nakatomi Plaza and without the former's witty script and likeable characters. Starts a bit slow, gets better wehn the action starts, but then just gets silly. If it didn't take itself so seriously it wouldn't be too bad. So many plot holes they would fill a book but the main one is that the incredibly complex North Korean plan entirely hinges on the President over-riding security procedures and allowing the Koreans into the White House bunker otherwise it would fail completely. How could they possibly be certain that he would do that?
Also if you are a group of secret service agent defending the White House against a ground attack by about 100 gadgees armed with AK47s and rocket launchers it is probably not your best plan to stand out in the open on the front steps blasting away with your pistols until you inevitably get mown down.
So all in all a bit crap but don't worry a sequel will be here in October (that's not a joke btw).
How to Murder Your Wife 1965 starring Jack Lemmon, Terry-Thomas and the beautiful Virna Lisi. super film this and great to find it available on prime.

Keith Carradine and Harvey Keitel are the main protagonists. Beautiful film, fabulous costumes and some truly bloody duels, Ridley Scott's first film and despite it being small scale re budget it is epic re scope.
The film is sited as being an accurate portrayal of Napoleonic period military conduct and uniform changes.

Yes, that is a truly excellent film. The realisation that Keith Carradine has got the better of Harvey Keitel, and that Keitel has to now retire in disgrace is utterly moving.
Fabulous attention to detail, superb location shots, great actors - this is Ridley Scott's fine directorial debut.
War and Remembrance. Herman Wouk's follow up book to The Winds of War, and made into a mini series in 1988; starring Robert Mitchum and the lovely Victoria Tennant in lead roles with Polly Bergen, Topol John Guilgud and Robert Hardy among the many supporting stars. Both these books are among my favorites and these series are pretty good..
The death camp scenes are hard going, although people should always be reminded of what can happen if your guard is let down...should be shown in schools
Currently watching Dusty Springfield at the BBC on yesterday channel. Boy did she were some get-up's lol. add in the Quaffed hair and you have the quintessential superstar of the 60's ..... Cilla was there too in a ridiculously short skirt....legs are rather better than I remember and go all the way to yaya:lol:

Cracking film. I was actually looking through my US DVDs for my copy of 'Wise Blood' (another classic) and remembered I'd not got 'The Last Picture Show', so I found one on eBay. Less than a fiver from estocks.
