I thought that from watching the trailers, saw it and nearly walked out. Thought it was dreadful.

Then I read the reviews and quite a few liked it (a lot hated it too), so I went back again to see if I'd got it wrong and still didn't like it. I did notice on both occasions most of the audience was around 20 yo and they loved it. I didn't laugh once, they were hooting.

Definitely a Marmite film and has really divided opinions, two Guardian Media critics reviewed it, one gave it 1 star, the other 5 stars!!!

Go figure. I give it 1 star.

Those James Stewart/Anthony Mann westerns are brilliant! The Far Country probably my favourite - in fact I have a copy of the Arrow Blu-ray somewhere still to watch.

Been on a bit of a Netflix series mission this year. We were watching "The Crown" since Christmas, hadn't watched any of it before but ended up watching all three seasons. I'm not a massive Royalist, but it is absolutely brilliant as a relatively modern period drama, and very educational as well as entertaining. The actors changed with season 3 (to reflect the family getting older) which we struggled with a bit but a few episodes in the stories take over. Looking forward to the next season as it will bring in the period where I will remember the events at the time.

Wasn't sure what to watch next but Netflix does such a great job of putting trailers up that are tailored to your tastes. So we binge watched "The Stranger" last week, it was phenomenal, so many twists and turns and confusion brought together at the end. So now watching an older mini-series called "Safe" based on a book by the same American author - Harlan Coben. This is equally excellent so far. (half way through.)

I really enjoyed it, and “Lady Gaga” is nothing like her pop star persona would suggest. Bradley Cooper also directed, and it is genuinely him singing (not sure on the guitar playing) might not be your cup of tea musically, but it is IMHO a very well put together film.

Prison break comedy with Peter Sellers giving a low-key performance as a smart thief who has to escape from jail to do a tickle, then break back in, thus establishing the perfect alibi.

Interesting that the Sellers character is very similar to that of Fletcher in the TV show 'Porridge', and Lionel Jeffries's chief warder character has a lot of parallels with 'Mr McKay'. I wonder if this film was part of the inspiration for 'Porridge' but I don't think I've ever seen that mentioned before.

Description:

I'll Take Your Dead follows William, who has a simple job: he makes dead bodies disappear. I know you've got a few good ones, as you've mentioned some on here. For war films, in particular to hit the spot for me, the main focus has to be on the battle scenes, not on making a political/historical point, or worse on some yawn-inducing romance!

I want to see blood and guts, lots of it, and plenty of shooting/fighting scenes, and stuff being bombed and blown up. In that respect, films such as Tora! Tora! Tora!, or with more of a 'western' angle, Zulu, are just fab!:)

What else, from your knowledge, would likely appeal to me on those lines? My favourite westerns tend to be about famous outlaws, where there are lots of gunfights, or 'revenge' themes, where some guy has had his wife and family killed by 'baddies', and he exacts his revenge by going after and killing all responsible, one by one.

Nothing requiring too much thought or concentration, or complicated plots!

Nice one, noted. Some I've seen and some I haven't. I also enjoyed Battle of Britain, and one of my favourite films of all time, The Guns of Navarone. Plus, The Dirty Dozen.

For me, with war films, the golden era was the late 60s to mid 70s.

Chato's Land is pretty violent.. any of the Eastwood ones obviously..young guns etc...big jake is good.. some of the Anthony Mann/James Stewart films are dark, although not bloody due to being 50's. pat garrett and billy the kid from 73 is good. Nicholson/ Brando effort, when the Missouri breaks is good too. youd like it

Westerns - 'The Searchers' is a quality revenge western. Not action all the way through but enough to keep you interested. Like Grant said any western with Eastwood in is good, he never made a bad one. The black and white 'Gunfight At The OK Corral' is a good watch. There's a remake with Kurt Russel which is also okay.

Vietnam - Don't rate any of the Vietnam films Grant listed except 'Platoon' which is a bit 'Hollywood' but gets away with it. The daddy is still 'Apocalypse Now' of course, 'We Were Soldiers' is also excellent and sticks pretty close to history. 'Hamburger Hill' worth a watch although suffers a bit from the low budget.

'Big Red One' is an interesting film (set in WW2) but I don't rate it that highly. 'Dunkirk' is excellent - not the crappy modern one, the original. 'A Bridge Too Far' is still the best thing anyone's ever done IMO. Not so keen on the made-up stuff like 'Dirty Dozen' although it is very watchable. 'Kelly's Heroes' is classic but I count that as a heist, not a war picture, so it's okay to make stuff up. And there's 'Sahara' with Humphrey Bogart - anything with Bogey in is always worth a watch. There's a colour re-make of that which is also okay.

WW1 - there's only really 'Paths Of Glory' and 'Gallipoli' that spring to mind as being outstanding. 'Sergeant York' is worth a watch though, as is the original 'All Quiet On The Western Front'. The colour re-make sucks. Oh and then there's 'Lawrence Of Arabia', might be a bit too slow for you, Marco, but has some of the most tremendous action scenes ever. You probably seen that one anyway.

Pre-20th century you've got 'Zulu' of course although very much made -up. I'm one of the few who also likes the prequel 'Zulu Dawn' where the Zulus get to kick ass - and it's very historically accurate that one. 'Charge Of The Light Brigade' (the 1968 one) is quirky but has its moments. Avoid 'Waterloo' with Rod Steiger. God knows what they were thinking when they made that. 'The Alamo' with John Wayne (not the crappy re-make by the bloke from Happy Days) is one of my favourites, bit slow to get going though. And the original 'The Four Feathers' is pretty good.

ACW - given the yanks obsess about it, it's weird that there's not many stand out films about it. 'Gettysburg' isn't bad, especially the first half. Long, long film that one though but the history is good. 'Red Badge Of Courage' with Audie Murphy is one of my personal favourites but it isn't that great really. Maybe there are some others I forget?

Modern era - you've got 'Black Hawk Down' - that's excellent. 'The Wild Geese' - made up but it gets away with it, and 'Heartbreak Ridge'. That's a weird one, alternates between being utterly moronic and absolutely brilliant. Don't try to copy Eastwood's character by referring to problems at work as a 'Clusterfuck'. You get into trouble.

War films, unusual. The siege of Jedotsville. Set in 1960s Gongo when the UN peace keeping mission goes pear shaped and a group of Irish peace keepers end up holding and fighting against overwhelming forces for days. Mention of this battle was swept under the carpet until recently when awards were given and the battle, given its historical worth. Its got to be said, that the men and their leaders fought incredibly well against battle hardened mercenaries including decorated French Foreign Legionaries, and several thousand local soldiers.

The head of the UN died when his plane was shot down by Gongo forces during this period.

Well worth a watch, on Netflix

Westerns - Hostiles also on Netflix. Extremely good film, Christian Bale is very good in it.

It isn’t but that sounds intriguing. Another compilation (from the 30s I think) ‘Dead of night’ has the haunted mirror story, where when the main character looks in an antique mirror he sees a different room to his own in the background.

Another Pricey film I must revisit is Dr Phibes where he kills his victims in ingenious ways (force feeding a food critic to death, played by Robert Morley).

I've done a bit of research into the Amacus horror anthologies, and found the following:

(This is the one containing the story of the widow who is granted three wishes to bring her husband back to life, but the embalming fluid in his veins causes too much pain so she has to chop up the body with a cleaver, but the body parts keep writhing about.)

'The House that Dripped Blood' (1970)

I think I have seen them all at one time or another.

The other night they showed the Halley's Comet episode where you get to see what the time-tunnel complex looks like outside the main room - and it's a complete rip off of the Krell power station from Forbidden Planet.
