William Friedkin (The French Connection, The Exorcist) did an English language remake called “The Sorceror” with Roy Sheider in 1977, but doesn’t come close to the original.

Scarlet Street. 1945. Classic Film Noir.. In fact this may well be the first real film Noir. Well actually it was the woman in the window but it had the same players etc and was the year before.

One of my favourite films - as you say a real "nailbiter".
BTW they are carrying nitroglycerine; a far more unstable explosive than dynamite. In fact it was Alfred Nobel's idea of mixing nitrogylcerine with a clay (called kieselguhr) that made it mechanically stable. He called the new explosive 'dynamite' and it made Nobel his fortune.
The ending of the film is a shocking surprise.

Michael Caine had initially been excited at the prospect of working with Sturges. During shooting, Sturges told Caine that he only worked to earn enough money to go fishing. Caine wrote later in his autobiography: "The moment the picture finished he took the money and went. [Producer] Jack Wiener later told me [Sturges] never came back for the editing nor for any of the other good post-production sessions that are where a director does some of his most important work. The picture wasn't bad, but I still get angry when I think of what it could have been with the right director. We had committed the old European sin of being impressed by someone just because he came from Hollywood".
Michael Caine was originally offered the part of Devlin but did not want to play a member of the IRA, so asked if he could have the role of Steiner. Richard Harris was in line to play Devlin but ongoing comments he had made in support of the IRA drew threats to the film's producers, so he was forced to withdraw and Donald Sutherland was given the role.

Great film that. Shame Devlin does not get his just desserts but I suppose the film is better for that.
Don't know what Michael Caine is complaining about as there's nothing wrong with it as far as I can see. Donald Pleasance isn't in it enough, that's about it.

Fox is superb in this.
Zinnemann wrote that Adrien Cayla-Legrand, the actor who played de Gaulle, was mistaken by several Parisians for the real de Gaulle during filming—though de Gaulle had been dead for two years prior to the film's release. The sequence was filmed during a real parade, leading to confusion; the crowd (many of whom were unaware that a film was being shot) mistook the actors portraying police officers for real officers, and many tried to help them arrest the "suspects" they were apprehending in the crowd.

Ah yes - The replacement for The Professionals that was not fit to tie its shoelaces.
Thought it was crap at the time, watched a couple of episodes and then left it. Seen them all since though and compared to modern telly it's absolutely brilliant.

She was typical 80s bird, very pretty face but not much else to write home about.
The best episode has to be the bank robbery one where they try to escape on a bus at the end.

Did you see Cop Land? He was superb in that, as good or better than the top cast he was with.
He's good in the first Rocky film too.
His problem was always that he mainly opted to star in crap films.
Interestingly he reckoned that Copland killed his career despite all the good reviews he got for it.

Not bad but kinda missed the style of the brill cream public schoolboy attitude.

Never really noticed the age difference before, but back then as soon as they hit 16 or so both men and women would start dressing like they were fifty. Hairstyles too.
There was a photo on the wall at my university of the first ever intake from about 1950 and even though they are all 18 not one of them looks a day under 40. Some are even smoking pipes.

I prefer films to be led by characters, which is what I've always liked about Tarantino and Coen brothers films.
I recently found myself thinking about "The Executioner's Song", with Tommy Lee Jones and Rosanna Arquette putting in sterling performances. It came on telly in about 1990, and was done in two parts, as it is about 5 hours long.
I looked for it on DVD or Blu Ray, but apparently it had been messed about with - for instance, the song playing on the bus's radio when taking Gary Gilmore to his execution: originally it was "Una Paloma Blanca" (or whatever it was called) it was changed to something else :doh: Surely that was an important part of the (true) story? So I didn't bother.

Blott on the Landscape was great. I used to watch it with my mum, early 80's I think, she laughed all through it. She had a bit of a 'thing' for Suchet though, strange woman. I've read quite a few Tom Sharpe novels, wicked humour.

Yes, I like a good story too, but I also like being entertained by 'action'. Films that have too much 'talking' in them, without much action, just bore me to tears. And as for comedies, I only really 'do' the black variety. 'Family friendly' stuff just turns me off, as it's almost always too much of a cheese fest!:doh:

think bluray done well is very much better than dvd, not that a good dvd isin any way bad.. that said 4k downscaled to hd can be almost as good as 4k on a 4k tv unless your using a huge tv or are sitting 2 feet away from the screen. Ive been revisiting the content of my old dvds and tbh many are pretty decent, even older films.

Obviously a reference to Gulliver's Travels, satirist Jonathan Swift's book on a journey of self-discovery as well. This journey shows comedy is most important when folk are struggling.
Lake was 6 months pregnant when making the film so a body doub;le was used for much of it... Sturges was furious she didnt disclose it.. Lake may have been goergous but was apparently very difficult person.something that seems common with excessive beauty.
also the us censors refused it to be exported due to it being wartime and the scenes of the chain gang could have been used as propaganda against the country, so its overseas release was delayed... not sure by how long tho

When I was using an old CRT telly, there was little point in buying Blu-ray discs, but now I have a new telly my Blu-ray collection has increased. But not all Blu-ray editions are that much better than plain old vanilla DVDs; much like so-called "supercuts" are sometimes little better than the original vinyl.

My advice: Del does seem to like doing girlie stuff (girlie get togethers, girlie nights out), so when she suggests you go and do blokey stuff, do it! I'm not talking about watching 'the match' down the pub with yer mates, or going for a game of pool, but you could go and look at some power tools, or find a record shop. Works for me :)

Well I suppose she's similar, although not what you would call a 'girlie girl'. Her interests leaned more towards anything using an internal combustion engine. Cars, motorbikes, even learned to drive buses, and did that for a while. HGVs would have been next, but health issues got in the way.
But if we're out and about in a strange town, or indeed a familiar town, she knows it will only be a matter of minutes before I start to lose the will to live. So first off we would find a record shop or something that would interest me and she would leave me there while she went off and did her own thing. I would normally still be there when she was done.
Yeah I get that. I don't mind going round certain types of shops, as long as what's sold holds my interest, and fortunately, in that respect, out with of outright girly stuff, Del and I have similar interests. For example, we both love antique shops and anywhere that sells nice (unusual) things/bric-a-brac, for the house or garden.
I also enjoy treating her and buying her nice clothes, and watching her wee face light up when she gets stuff she really likes, especially dresses and shoes (from the designer boutiques she enjoys frequenting), so I don't mind taking her shopping for things like that, and often do, although as I've said she prefers to shop on her own for underwear or with her girlfriends.
Whilst Del's a 'girly girl', in the sense of some of the things she likes [her 'girly fun', as you've mentioned with other females] and how she looks/dresses, as well as sometimes behaving like a 'princess', she's also not afraid to get her hands dirty, as it were, working in the garden, making/fixing things, and has always been very active, with a strong work ethic.
Just thought I'd make that clear, in case you thought she was some demanding, high-maintenance, superficial 'air head', who only cares about herself. Nothing could be *further* from the truth!:)

I agree, but it's not beauty I'm talking about though [why I find most 'supermodels'/Miss World types distinctly unattractive], but rather 'girly cuteness'/femininity.
I love women who not only look like women, but BEHAVE/dress like women, and also have an air of delicateness and 'vulnerability' [as in like to be looked after and protected], as well as sophistication.
Chinese and Japanese women tend to be like that, but of course there are plenty of girls like that of all nationalities!
Del's exactly like that, which is one of the things that attracted me to her in the first place, but she's also strong-willed and stroppy lol, which is also something else I like:D I like confident, intelligent, feisty women with 'attitude', who know what they want from life. That in itself is very attractive.

Agreed she does look cute (and is not without brains as well). The image is from 2011, so 9 years on she probably has kept her looks.
