An emotive episode indeed. 11/10 for both writers and actors
Onward to Skye; ep 9 of outlander2 .. very decent series its turned into, from its slightly odd beginning

Homes Under The Hammer. Bloke buys a Grade Two Listed Georgian house in London that has clearly not had a penny spent on it since it was built and is then surprised that he has to spend £200K to sort it out. Turns out quite well though.
Homes Under The Hammer
One of many programmes that has me shouting at the telly, those so called developers/'project managers' with their miniscule budgets (new roof, replaster, rewire, install new heating, kitchen, bathroom for as much as £2k!). I had to give up daytime tv for the sake of my blood pressure :steam:

I went though a phase of watching some homes shows; grand designs mostly. I found the Aussie version the most enjoyable though, but both suffered from same under budget situations. Some were hideous, but some were nice too. Need to win zee lottery to do mine, which will be a thick walled cottage with machine-gun emplacements:eyebrows:
Well I've been getting a bit of culture by watching some fantastic productions of Shakespear plays. Richard III with Ian Mckellen, absolutely brilliant, gripping and superbly acted. Trevor Nunn's Twelfth Night, very enjoyable, Nigel Hawthorn as Malvolio is excellent. The Merchant of Venice with Al Pachino, just breathtaking, Pachino's Shylock is masterly. Sorry to be a bit gushy but I really do recommend any of these. There we go, back to my usual diet of Alien and British gangster films.
Continued with ep 10 of outlander2, (victory over the English at Prestonpans) ;) ...........and now ep21 of law and order season1. Both excellent series....
2 great episodes there... round off the evening with some Slackbladder ;)
All from my Amazon digital library

Hauntingly beautiful, but very creepy and somewhat disturbing film, about a writer who moves into a Victorian house and finds that its past is not at peace. Not a big budget film, but done well, with good acting and well worth a watch if you like ghost stories.

Ep 1 of this iconic series.. picked up season 1&2 in a sale with Amazon Digital
Penultimate ep of outlander, which gets better by the day,
and now ep 2 of NYPD Blue
'Kick Ass 2'
Obviously 'Hit Girl' can't have the same impact as she does in the first film so one of the planks that raised the original from lame to worth watching is removed. But it is still an entertaining enough romp if you enjoy an almost mindless combination of comic-book violence and ironic humour.
Just finished the final episode of Outlander season 2.... Great finale, and leaves an interesting start for the 3rd series, that is , I am told, in the making(I Hope its true). Very highly recommended series, ...so far
Just back from seeing the new Star Trek flick.
Best of the 3 new ones by quite a way, felt more like the original Star Trek than the previous two.
recommended.
Might take a day off in the week and go and see that. Liked the first one, not seen the second one yet.
Yesss Please Do.. (take ear plugs though) and report back.
Reviews (here) are erm not flattering.
As pointless digression: a friend played 'Cptn Pike' in the first two of these New trekkie films.
Hey! an income is where one finds it... was his answer.
I detest going to Movie theatres because of the Ludicrous DB levels. Can we say: Induced Hearing Loss?
So I won't be going to a film viewing venue..under most any circumstance.
I've been once in 20 years and that was to see the latest Star Wars film. I stopped going when they got rid of the smoking sections, also the local cinema back then had rubbish sound and the screens were too small.
Sound and screen size have improved since so I can live without the smoking, but it has to be something I am really interested in to make the effort. I'm very much a 'wait until it comes on the telly' man.
Cool that you know Captain Pike.
Ahh yess Dunno If it's the same in the UK But here the Db levels are V high!
As in I find it too loud with industrial quality Ear Plugs inserted... seriously.
I presume they must show off their Massive ($$$) sound systems ??. That and a Monkey see / Monkey do attitude.
Not withstanding the 1/2 hour or more of Adverts that precede each Film.
Bruce Greenwood is 'Pike's' real name.
The new Star Wars film I saw had some bass issues - too much and a bit boomy. The SPL was high but it was clean so there was no wincing moments and I didn't feel the need for earplugs.
Loudest thing I ever heard was Eric Clapton at the Manchester Apollo in '86. 3 days for the ringing in my ears to subside. I don't think they let you do that no more, not legally anyways.
Part one of the new BBC adaptation of Joseph Conrad's 'The Secret Agent'. From my fading memory of the book, a reasonably 'straight' adaptation. Great performance from Ian Hart as 'The Professor'.

Excellent movie!
Great soundtrack too - and a great, albeit bleak, ending.
My son was watching that the other day oddly
It's been on telly recently as I watched it again about 3 weeks ago.
Name a bad film with Donald Pleasance in it - bet you can't ;)
The night creatures. :eyebrows: or was it night creature.. It was bad
Okay not seen that one. Are you sure it wasn't just a dream you had? ;)
I always like him as a baddy. Either Himmler or Ernst Stavro Blofeldt. He was better at doing Himmler than the real Himmler.
He has made one or 2 other hummers but none i can think of for a long while...his early stuff was hit n miss at times

New TV show from America, a political satire, black comedy, thriller, Sci Fi alien Invasion series.
Stumbled across it mentioned on an online blog. Its on You tube but poor quality, but watchable. In away this is a wee bit like, Phase 5 meets House of Cards.
I would hurry looks like You Tube are deleting them.

Yes I've read that he won't discuss it, even though it is his most well known and admired performance. Probably one of these luvvies who wants to be taken seriously for his Hamlet, or some such bollocks. Last time I saw him in anything it was in that 'Cold Case' series and that was utter shite so he did himself no favours there.
What might be good would be a new Likely Lads series set in the present day, obviously with a new cast. Keep the basic idea but update the setting a bit.
He was good in the Beiderbeck Series and When the Boat Comes In, but wasnt overly enamoured at his other stuff bar likely lads. Its a shame folk get overly up themselves about the acting that made them. A number of the Carry On gang, kenny Williams especially, were like that, as was john Laurie about Dads Army. Think they are better than they in fact are. Preferred Kenny Connor and Babs Windsor's attitude..
D.O.A (1950) stars Ed o'Brien as a man poisoned and trying to find out why, and by who before he dies. One of those great performances.

'Ender's Game' 2013
I don't know what the original pitch for this film was, but 'Starship Troopers crossed with Harry Potter' is probably not far off. Which sounds promising but instead it is one of those films where the entire plot and ending is entirely predictable almost from the off. Harrison Ford tries really hard, but when even Han Solo can't save the situation, you know you've got a lot of trouble on that ship.
And can someone explain why it is 2013 and CGI in sci-fi films still looks like they just put in some animation shots? Why is it that in 2001: A Space Odyssey does it look like they went into space and filmed a space station when similar shots in this film look like an early 'Nineties arcade game? 44 years separates one from the other.

not really my thing so may not make the end, but you never know I guess.

Carry On Girls.
June Whitfield as Mrs Prodworthy.
:-) as a boy, over at my friends' house. His Father would invariably be glued to his TV set... anytime, after his working hours.
Which was clearly unusual to me. Yet, even more curiously, that fudd claimed he knew the names of All the 'actors' on his Screen. And took pains to inform one and all.
This boggled my 12 yr old mind as to Why anybody would even want to know.
Meaning nothing.. other than the preceding postings triggered that memory
Things are different now but back in the 1970s, in England, in the winter, there was not much else to do other than stop in and watch telly or go out to the pub. Obviously if you were too young to go to the pub that left one option.
In any case, knowing who played who in the Carry On films should really be compulsory learning in schools. Even in Canada. In fact, especially in Canada ;)

Someone once suggested (on a comedy show, I think) that films should have subtitles to remind you what else the actors have been in, to prevent whispering in the cinema. Nowadays, on DVD cases, they actually include the titles of other films the actors have been in. Dunno what they do if it's the actor's debut role.
No pleasing some folk of course
They have the sound in the cinema so loud nowadays that communication by whispering is imposible in any case.
I miss the old days with Pearl & Dean, the suporting feature, the ice cream girls, and the smoking section. It's all too corporate and sanitised now.
I rarely go to the cinema these days. Apparently, when I was a nipper me and my sisters used to go to a local makeshift cinema known as 'the fleapit' every week. I have absolutely no recollection of going there, what it looked like, or what films we saw (mainly cartoons, according to my sisters). What's equally bizarre is that I have no memory of going to church on the first Friday of every month, which I must have done for ten or more years.
Your fragile child mind must have blotted out the experience. Not surprising in the case of church. I still credit church and latin lessons for instilling in me a quite amazing capacity to tolerate long periods of intense boredom.

Is it still Matt Damon running around unconvincingly and nothing else that will remain in your memory for more than a minute?
Don't get me wrong the original 3 are watchable. None are as good as Under Siege though, to set some sort of benchmark.

More or less Martin but, as you say, quite watchable. Meerkat movies so two for price of one & £10 off voucher on back of tickets for Frankie & Benny's and we were going there for lunch anyway :)
Frankie and Bennies you need ten pound off. I've been a couple of times it is some pricey faux Americana. I'd go again though. :)

I liked it Tim. Very well acted too, with top stars all enjoying themselves, but you do feel an air of reverance to the old series too.
Feel you maybe need to watch it twice to get it, as first time your a bit nonplused about it all, as everyone is strange.
Maybe I'll try again, but I just couldn't relate to Capt. Mainwaring, Arthur Lowe was peerless in the role and that was my main reason for giving up.

Star Wars, the first movie in the pre-special edition theatrical version on non-anamorphic DVD. Looks a bit dotty and fuzzy blown up on the 100" screen but it's still an impressive spectacle. The original 'Dolby Surround' soundtrack stands up pretty well, too.
Keep meaning to get hold of a copy of that. I have the special edition but hate the idiotic 'improvements'. The original version is a classic.

Bruce Willis is a retired CIA agent - blah blah - good cast with Morgan Freeman, John Malkovitch, Helen Mirren, Karl Urban. Starts out as a serious spy thriller then gets a little silly. I wondered if it didn't start out as a more serious, quite dark film, but at some point someone decided to pour sub Ocean's Eleven faux-cool on the thing, including on the soundtrack, which means it ends up being neither one thing or the other.
In short, it is not as good as Under Siege. But just the sight of Helen Mirren in a ballgown continuously firing a .50 calibre machine gun means it is worth a watch.

There's talk (but that's all it seems to be at the moment) that the original theatrical trilogy may be on its way to blu-ray. I'm fairly relaxed about these things, generally and the 'latest' special editions are fabulous on blu-Ray even with Lucas' changes. The fuzziness of the DVD was occasionally distracting, (they were produced from the letterbox laserdisc master apparently and I'm sure they'd look splendid on a big 4:3 CRT) but it was nice to see it in its original form.
I might hang on for the Blu-Ray then. I've got a BD player somewhere although I've never had cause to use it.

Thoroughly gripping - some of the tech is hyped up for dramatic purposes (although some of it not that far from reality) -- but the questions of the morality of remote warfare and potential for collateral damage is the real heart of the film. Excellent stuff, and Alan Rickman is excellent in his last on screen role.

Very good film that. Nicely worked by director Guy Ritchie.
The period atmosphere is spot on, but sadly I wasn't gripped by the film (and even less so by the sequel). I did however like both Robert Downey's portrayal of Holmes and Jude Law's Watson.
Put a lot of episodes into 1 film and it obviously suffers a tad for it, but its an action film and needs to i guess.. Will watch the follow up tonight as its free on amazon prime too.

I get the two muddled up as well.
If you watched the second film first, then did you find the fight scene in the tavern to be tedious and frankly almost slapstick?
Its Bartitsu of E W Barton Wright fame... It was a type of martial art in last 2 centuries. Downey Jr is a matrial arts expert anyway so it was easier for him to choreograph i guess. Think he is into Wing Chun , which sounds like a nice spicy chicken dish lol
I enjoyed the fight scenes...think there were 5 or 6.

'Phil Spencer's Stately Homes'
Not 'Stately Homes With Phil Spencer' you note; the chosen title sort of implies that he has bought the National Trust. Now I'm fascinated by big old houses so I always watch this sort of thing, but this would be a lot better if someone with a deep knowledge of history and architecture was presenting it, instead of an estate agent.
He talks to some people who at least relate a bit of the history but when left to wander around and ad lib he is way out of his depth. 'A backgammon set' he notes observantly; and: 'There's history everywhere you look.' Which has to be the most banal statement you could possibly make whilst wandering around Woburn Abbey. At one point he is reduced to playing with a friendly dog to fill up the forty-five minutes. Why is this sort of stuff so dismally lightweight these days?

Stir Crazy (1980) directed by Sidney Poitier and starring the great Gene Wilder and Richard Prior... Made a 10 fold profit in the US alone, this super film....

Great film, and nice to hear the late Erland van lidth singing birmingham Jail again.. He died very young from a heart attack
Never realised it was Sidney Poitier who did Stir Crazy. I think it is still the highest grossing comedy of all time, if you allow for inflation. Or was for a long time.
Meanwhile I've been watching 'Salt' (2010)
Angelina Jolie is a CIA agent, blah, blah; until a defector comes in and fingers her as a Russian assassin. She goes on the run to prove her innocence - or does she?
One point I noted: In films, ex-CIA agents are almost universally rock hard. But in this the active CIA agents are rubbish, to the extent that the willowy Jolie can go through them as though they weren't even there. Do CIA men only get their tough guy powers after they retire? One to ponder.
being fingered by a defector is bound to give her super powers :eyebrows: Yes it was Sidney, or should I say Sir Sidney lol
Knives in the bed, That's all I'm going to say, man. Knives in the bed.

Well, quite. We visited Salisbury the other day and, in preparation, I read the relevant bit of Alec Clifton-Taylor's book on English cathedrals. He did a masterful series for the BBC entitled, if memory serves 'Seven English Towns', which looked at the good and bad features of said towns. His most condemnatory word was 'unhappy', and as the series was broadcast just when town planners were doing their level best to bugger up every town in the country, there was a lot to be unhappy about.
Anyway, avoid every programme with the presenter's name in the title, especially if the presenter's just some bloke/woman rather than an expert in his/her field.

Good advice but I have it on series record so I've got another one to watch tonight, although in truth I'm now more interested in how far he can push the limits of banality, rather than the actual stately home.
What they need to do is look to the past and see how it was done then as standards were much, much higher. There is a railway documentary from the early 'Seventies, written and presented by John Betjeman, which I've watched several times even though I don't have any special interest in trains, simply because it exudes quality, thoughfulness and intelligence.
It wouldn't actually cost them any more money to make these programs a lot better, so I don't really know what their excuse is for putting this shite out.

Set in the 80's, if your a fan of Stephen King or classic Spielberg you owe it to yourself to see this if you have Netflix.
8 superb episodes...5 in 3 to go.
Thats my Saturday afternoon sorted then!
Three more episodes of 'Spaced' followed by 'Bridget Jones on the Edge of Reason'. There's definitely something about watching a film on a bigger screen (though I realise 38" isn't particularly big by current standards), because had this been on a small TV I probably wouldn't have watched it right through.

You're still in the Honeymoon stage. It wears off. The day I got my fifty I sat there and watched the whole London Marathon coverage, basking in the sheer massiveness of it all. I never watched a second of it before or since.

When Caroline and I got our first colour TV (in 1982, from Curry's in Charlton, if memory serves) we sat entranced by the snooker for several hours, then watched the whole of Eurovision (it was a much shorter programme back then). I've not watched either snooker or Eurovision since.
Absolute Power, stars Clint Eastwood as a crack burglar. He is a tad old for it tbh lol, but its still a good film... not sure of the date but guess its late 90's.. Gene Hackman co-stars... Ive got this on dvd but I cant find the boxset so had to repurchase it on digital...

Trailer Park Boys: Don't Legalise It (2014)
Concerned that the planned legalisation of cannabis will bring an end to his successful ganja growing operation, Ricky heads to the hearings in Ottawa to petition the government to keep the drug illegal. There are much shananigans on the way. Highly entertaining film this.
The Warriors (1979)
A street gang must cross New York to get back to their turf on Coney Island whilst every other gang in the city tries to hunt them down. Controversial at the time, but now considered a cult classic. Not seen it in years, still a really enjoyable film even if to a modern eye some of the gang costumes look decidedly 'gay'.

Why can't we make a British gangster film like that anymore? Everything about that film is brilliant: acting, direction, music, script, setting. The Director's Commentary is worth the time if you have that version (and haven't heard it already).

Battlefield: The Tunisian Campaign
Quality show this. No know-nothing celebs asking veterans 'how did you feel?' Instead, just the facts, soberly narrated with good use of stock footage to help visualise the terrain and the kit. And lots of maps. I like maps. It almost has the purity of an old Open University program.
Probably feel it was a waste of time fighting the hun to allow them to gather easy money:D

Like a fine wine it just keeps getting better with age. Never occurred to me before but there are absolutely no female characters in this film. There are a couple of women in the background at Oddball's camp, and they drive past four nuns at one point. Some women in the French crowd scene at the end and that's it.

I saw both when I was in my early teens. Can't recall much about them though. Must have been OK, as I've not forgotten the titles.
I bet they're not as good as the 1957 'Night of The Demon' with Dana Andrews though. http://www.dailymotion.com/video/x1xd6p8_night-of-the-demon-1957_shortfilms An excellent and genuinely creepy horror story!

I took a look at these last night. They did not live up to expectations. The Trollenberg Terror was dire, so creaky and full of cardboard scenery. X The Unknown was just about watchable. The 'sparkler' special effects did it no favours and Anthony Newley was as annoying as ever. The most overrated actor and 'singer' ever.

You watched that? Surprised by that.
Read the book years ago, it was unpleasant. No desire to see some stunted imagination 'director' make it worse.
IMO Di Caprio is right in there with Madonna as an Actor, but she looks better at least (after several beers:-).. just to add insult to injury.
You think DiCaprio is a poor actor? I agree he gets miscast a lot, but when he doesn't he is really good - 'Catch Me If You Can' being a prime example.
I stand by what i said. Di caprio has made a lot of very good films, and a few poor ones. This is one of his best performances, and although its pretty gory, and by that, not my normal viewing, it was so well done, and message so clear, that its difficult not to have enjoyed and respected the film.
Guess there is no accounting for folks taste though, and within reason, its good to have diverse views.....i draw the line at Donald Trump though  now there is a foul and repugnant film in the making;)
'Peep Show'
Yes, it may just be a modern re-working of 'The Odd Couple' but for me still far and away the best sitcom of the past decade. Mitchell & Webb may be knobs in real life but are brilliant in this, and 'Super Hans' has to be up there with Eric Cartman as one of the finest comic characters of all time.

One of those rare films that really captures the atmosphere of the novel it is adapted from. Odd one, Graham Greene. I really like his books but can never figure out why.

Although the film ending of Brighton Rock is quite different from the ending in the book, and in a way that undermines the underlying moral. The re-make from a few years back was shockingly bad.

Hi Def version this and a super picture(the other 2 are even better) First of the Ice age films, and amazingly goes back to 2002
Do you find it takes a couple of minutes to 'tune in' to Rab C Nesbitt, before you can really understand what they are saying?
Still Game is a nice, gentle lead in to it

It's like spot the younger, thinner one from Still Game (Pete the Jakey, Stevie..)

'Copland' just starting on Moviemix. Excellent punchy thriller. A very good, solid and serious performance from Stallone. His best in my view.

This 2016 remake has been roundly criticized by many, but I think the superb cast does really well and one of my favorite films of the year:sofa:
watching or re-watching a few familiar films. first was Kind Hearts and Coronets, and currently, Blazing Saddles. both superb and timeless on their own ways

Green Hornet
Run out the night with Blackadder series 3... superb stuff.....:)
Neil, whats the Green Hornet like?
Top Of The Pops from 1st July 1982.
1982 seems like yesterday to me, but it is more than 34 years ago. In any case, everything was very synthy, and Adam Ant knew how to act in his videos whilst Toyah lacked conviction.
A new art form at the time, the 'pop video'.

Loved the Ants.
Can't remember 82 much. Can remember from 84 well enough though.
The early 'Eighties were a bit weird in every respect. John Lennon getting whacked, that sort of sticks in my mind as the precursor to it, for some reason. 'Strange days indeed.'
Saw Adam Ant in London once. I was walking up the steps off The Mall and he was walking down. Very good looking and very well dressed (him, not me). Would have been in about '83.

Most Eighties music seemed pretty dire to me.
A few bands had some obvious talent. Thompson Twins, Culture Club and Soft Cell spring to mind. It was all pop, but done by people who actually understood music.
The Soft Cell single 'So' tickled me by having a B side called 'What'.
Pretty much bypassed the 80,s music wise. Guess coming from such a mansion as 60's and 70's, the 2 up, 2 down that was the 80's just didn't float my boat. Still, there was the odd masterpiece here and there.
St. Martin's Lane (1938), also released as The sidewalks of London stars Charles Laughton, Vivien Leigh, Rex Harrison, Tyrone Guthrie and the great Larry Adler on moothie
One of the best films of its time and made just a year b4 Vivien got the role of Scarlett O'hara. Some great musical ditties and dance routines. Laughton carries Leigh tbh a bit at times, but one of my treasures.

Passport to Pimlico (1949) . ealing comedy of the highest order this. superb performances from all but including Margret Rutherford, Stanley Holloway, John Slater, Basil Radford and Sydney Tafler. A small role for a future Carry on regular in Charles Hawtrey too.

Just finished 'Deadpool', a superhero film that tries too hard to have a sense of humour, enjoyed it though.

Silly comedic crime capper, but if you want some mindless fun, its will kill an hour and a half.
