After Lucky orchestrated the death of Faranzano, the five underbosses became the heads of the individual "Five Families" of organized crime in New York City. Eventually, through years of succession, the Luciano family became the Genovese Family, the Mangano family became the Gambino Family, the Gagliano family became the Luchese Family, and the Profaci family became the Columbo Family. Only the Bonnano Family retained the name of its original leader.

During the part where Rose and Jack are on the bow of the ship and Rose says "I'm flying, Jack," the sunset was real and not computer-generated (CGI). The set had been purposely built at a seaside location to capture natural light, and eight days of filming were available to capture the bow shot kissing scene. For obvious reasons, there were only a few minutes per day to shoot the scene, but every time, something wasn't quite right. The crew resorted to filming rehearsal shots in the hope that conditions would improve the next day. The final day had an overcast sky, so no one expected to get a better shot. But just before the day was about to end, the sky suddenly cleared. James Cameron (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000116/?ref_=tttrv_tr) quickly scrambled the crew together, Kate Winslet (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000701/?ref_=tttrv_tr) was hastily pulled out of make-up, and the scene was finished just before another cloud appeared. Due to all the haste, the shot was slightly out of focus, but Cameron nevertheless considered it the perfect sunset he had been waiting for, and this is the shot that ended up in the movie. Even though Cameron is a huge advocate for computer-generated effects, he admitted that the magic that they captured in camera that day would have been hard, if not impossible to replicate with CGI.

Harrison Ford (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000148/?ref_=tttrv_tr) damaged some ligaments in his leg during the filming of the scenes in the woods. He refused to take surgery until the end of filming so that his character would keep the limp. The limp can be seen in any subsequent scene where Richard Kimble is running.

The scene where Kimble is running through the St. Patrick's Day parade was not scripted. This was a later addition by Andrew Davis (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0001112/?ref_=tttrv_tr). Davis, a native of the city, really wanted to capture the parade and was granted permission from the mayor's office to film the day of the parade. The entire sequence was shot with a hand-held steady cam. Without rehearsal, Ford and Jones just went out into the crowd and did their thing, with camera operators running around trying to keep up. Ford observed that since his character was keeping a low profile, it meant he himself didn't stand out much and lasted several minutes in the crowd before being recognized.

I mean they forced him out of the original series. And Next Gen is terrible in that first series when he is in creative control. (Okay it doesn't get much better after that either)

He did and felt very guilty for it, despite it being Dunaway's decision. The shot made it into the movie.

In the UK, this (at the time) was the cheapest film ever to have received a theatrical release.

The producers redubbed the dialogue for the U.S. release to reduce heavy Glasgow accents, which would have been unintelligible to American audiences. The cost for the dubbing for this release was more than the original film production.

I've got it on VHS and DVD :)

Very little on telly over Xmas as usual. No 'Zulu' or even 'Zulu Dawn' or any other proper Xmas film except 'The Great Escape' and I saw that not long ago.

Watched 'The Ten Commandments' the other day. No seen that since I was about 8. It's even worse than I remember.

Agatha's death in the movie caused some consternation for Sir Alec Guinness (https://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000027/?ref_=tttrv_tr). The scene in question, a hot air ballooning accident filmed in a field next door to Pinewood Studios, prompted him to ask the producers if he was well insured. They told him that he was, to the tune of ten thousand pounds sterling, but Guinness didn't think that was enough. He then declared that the balloon could not be raised any more than fifteen feet unless they raised the insurance to fifty thousand pounds sterling. Ealing Studios was renowned for being very penny-pinching, and it naturally refused Guinness' demand, pointing out that he would be accompanied in the balloon by a well-qualified Belgian balloonist hidden in the basket with him. Guinness was undeterred in his refusal to perform the stunt, so the scene in the finished movie is not him, but the Belgian balloonist wearing Agatha's dress and wig. Guinness had the last laugh, however, when a high wind pulled the balloon off course. The Belgian balloonist was found fifty miles away, having had to jump into a river.

Watched "Source Code" on TV last night. It seems to be about alternative realities/parallel universes, but to me it was confused and made little sense (even as a piece of sci-fi).

The nearest parallel would be Akira Kurosawa's "Rashamon", which to my mind is a much better film.

it about ai v humanity i guess. nicely made and the cgi isn't heavy handed. it only had a 80m dollar budget which for this type of film is peanuts tbh. but i cant praise the director highly enough for not overly doing it.
a film you may wish to watch a few tims. a 4k version may look even better but it may be overkill too. bluray is a nice, slightly softer mix for me.
also no huge stars in it

Just been watching Tina Turner live in Barcelona, 1990, on Sky Arts TV.

Tina would have been 50 when she performed there, but you wouldn't know it - boy could she strut her stuff. My partner just couldn't believe she was 50: strutting the stage in high heels, and with an unbelievably shapely pair of legs!

Due to the detail that would have been shown via the Cinerama process, the costumes had to be sewn by hand, rather than with a sewing machine, as they would have been during the time periods depicted in the movie.

Cinerama was so expansive that it couldn't really be configured for close-ups. The nearest it could manage was to place a key actor in the central frame and try to get in as close as possible. This proved to be very intimidating for a lot of actors as the camera (an enormous piece of apparatus under a black hood with three lenses) would be literally in their face--18 inches away, to be precise.

Features more than 12,000 extras, including several Indian tribes.

An intermission was required to allow the projectionists enough time to re-thread the three projectors and synchronize the sound.

Because the two dividing lines that separate the three separate projections could not be totally edited into a seamless match, the directors skillfully used camouflage techniques to disguise the lines. Some of the objects used for this were trees, lamp posts, window edges, porch rails, building corners, doorways and wooden crates which were positioned at these points.

Tombstone, now that's a film I really liked, and I'm due another watch. Sam Elliot and his moustache were made for this film. I think he was probably born 100 years too late.

Even 'Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves' clocks in at two hours twenty. I think that Bryan Adams song takes up about half of that though.

Nice to see original Sci Fi that’s not part of an extended universe, a sequel or part of a Trilogy.
Thoughtful stuff, needs a 2nd viewing Theres so much going on.

some amazing moments, not seen anything like this for a long time.
Reminded me of Gareth Edwards first work, Monsters, more of that than big blockbuster sci-fi, which it also was.
Highly recommended if you liked Blade Runner and the like.

One of the most striking aspects of Jeremiah Johnson is, of course, its peerless photography by director of photography Duke Callaghan. The film – which began principal photography in early 1971 – was shot entirely in Redford’s adopted state of Utah and it makes magnificent use of locations such as Zion National Park, Ashley National Forest and Snow Canyon State Park. The powers-that-be at Warner Brothers had wanted the film to be shot on the backlot of the studio for monetary reasons, but star Redford and director Pollack succeeded in convincing them that the look and feel of the western film would be greatly enhanced by a location shoot.[didnt matter that a lot of the shoot was on Redford's land lol]

The Vienna Police Dept. has a special unit that is assigned solely to patrol the city's intricate sewer system, as its network of interlocking tunnels make great hiding places for criminals on the run from the law, stolen property, drugs, etc. The "actors" playing police officers in the film were actually off-duty members of that unit.

I might have been younger than Peter O'Toole when he played the part, but I have ridden a camel for several hours when I was in Mauritania and had no trouble.

The windmills seen in the film are "The Clayton Windmills". Wikipedia states that they are "known locally as Jack and Jill, (and) stand on the South Downs above the village of Clayton, West Sussex, England. They comprise a post mill and a tower mill, and the roundhouse of a former post mill. All three are "Grade II listed buildings."

The machine guns used by Major John Tarrant (Sir Michael Caine) and McKee (John Vernon) at the end are Ingram MAC-10s, probably 9mm. The guns were known for their high rate of fire, making them popular for movie work in the early 1970s.

The poem from which the title is taken, and which appears at the start of the film, is actually the second of four epitaphs written in 1918 by Greek scholar John Maxwell Edmonds. These were written for graves and memorials for those who died in battle. The full epitaph included a heading, "On Some who died early in the Day of Battle Went the day well? We died and never knew. When the man running the pub in the village where the film was being shot discovered that he had used up his alcohol ration on the film crew, he was so distraught he committed suicide.

If you accept that there's far too many continuity errors than could be expected, especially given Kubrick's perfectionist nature, you have to conclude that they are deliberate.

So the film must have some deep subtext, even if the Wendy Theory isn't it.

So the final shot of the film showing Jack Torrence as the bar tender at the Overland Hotel in 1921 is part of Wendy's continuing fantasy? That could explain it - although I have seen the film several times I never noticed the continuity errors. Kubrick was a perfectionist (he had special lenses made so he could film a scene in Barry Lyndon by candlelight), so the continuity errors must be deliberate.

I really will have to watch the film again; this time carefully.

Few people catch the boy calling him Mr. Grant--but it's there. lol

The "sinking" of a truck was inspired by a real incident that happened in 1944. On August 9, USS Bowfin (SS-287) followed four Japanese ships into Minami Daito Harbor. She fired her six bow torpedoes at the moored ships, hitting three and sinking two of them, but one torpedo went astray and hit a pier. A bus parked on it was blown up and thrown into the water by the explosion.

A submarine based at Cavite, the USS Seadragon, did go on patrol with a red paint job. Her original black paint was damaged by fire in the air raid, and ended up peeling off while she was on patrol. She ended up sinking three Japanese ships during the time her paint was peeling, leading Tokyo Rose to make broadcasts about "Red pirate submarines."

You've also got 'Once Upon A Time In America' where the second half of the film where he returns to New York forty years on is all just his opium dream - allegedly - but it does make sense.

The ship portraying H.M.S. Ballentrae was actually H.M.S. Leamington. She was Lend Leased to the U.K. as one of the fifty Lend Lease destroyers in 1940. In an interesting twist, she was further loaned by the British to the Soviets in 1944, and named Zhguchi. She was returned in to the British in 1950 and scrapped in 1951. She was used for the set of this movie prior to scrapping.

Commander Fraser refers to his service medals as "Squeak" and "Wilfred". These were nicknames for the the British War Medal and the British Victory Medal of World War I. The crew filed all of the necessary papers to destroy the Canary Wharf petrol station, but the police were (unintentionally) not notified. One of the most ridiculous disaster movies I have seen was 'Moonfall' (2022). An absurd mixture of alien conspiracy, AI, and an odd team flown into space to put things right.

It was so bad I was gripped for the entire duration of the film. The CGI special effects are however very good.

I taped that but not watched it yet. Roland Emmerich films are always so stupid, you have to keep watching just to see how ludicrous it will get.

The burbling sound made by Palfrey's car is the same sound effect used for Sidney Stratton's experiments in "The Man in the White Suit" (1951).

In this film in 1960, Ms Scott was 22 years old, while Ian Carmichael was 40 and Terry Thomas was already 49! A slightly scandalous age difference that was important at the time in real life, but totally ignored for the film industry.

The replacement car for The Swiftmobile, which was based upon a 1928 4½ litre Open four-seater Bentley (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bentley_4%C2%BD_Litre), with a custom two-seat open body. The car, minus the body, was sold by the studio in 1961 for £50, and re-sold (with a new body) at an auction in 2003 for £110,000. The replacement sported Reg PJB 828, and is most probably a big Austin Healey 3000 launched just a couple of years earlier. Despite being first registered in 1958 it wasn't registered on uk roads until 1989 and was last on the roads in 2012, apparently it's red now but hard to tell if that's the original colour in B&W. The vehicle is currently off-road declared SORN by some lucky owner. Reminiscent of MG in style the Austin body was in fact built by Jensen and typically paired with a 125-150 hp engine unit - heady stuff for the 1950's hence why the 3000 was a regular race winner easily capable of over 100mph. Still popular today at anything from £20-£90k, but £50,000 can secure a fully refurbished as new example - a far cry from the original £825 (inc front discs but not optional heater or radio) + a huge £350 tax!
The 'Bellini' sports car driven by Terry-Thomas in the film, is in reality the actual Aston Martin DB3S which was once driven by Sterling Moss in the Mila Migilia and has been valued recently at £7 million.
