The Four Feathers (1939)

https://i.imgur.com/AdMTUTr.jpg

In 1898 John Clements is an army officer who resigns the day before his regiment is due to be sent to the Sudan to fight Islamic extremists. Stung by accusations of cowardice he resolves to make amends.

Classic film I've not seen in years. Set in the days when there was no problem that couldn't be solved by a few rounds of volley fire followed up with a bayonet charge. There have been a few remakes since but they are all rubbish especially the most recent one that couldn't even get the uniforms right.

They only had a 2 grand budget back in those days, including the cost of the vehicle. So doing a proper re-spray was never an option.

I was surprised to learn that Ford sold the Capri in America when they already had the Mustang over there.

They're collectible now. Bought one at auction once I about 1992 or 3; the 3 litre version, I think it cost me 80 quid. Had a hell of a time selling it and never touched another one.

Would be worth a load now that they are collectible. And they look so much cooler than modern cars it's not funny.

Back in the early eighties, on my commute to work on my Suzuki GSX 750, my supervisor pulled up beside me at the lights in his 3 litre S Capri. When the lights changed he went for it, but I made it look like he was going backwards. He gave me so much shit about dangerous riding, then sulked all day.

Capris are now a valuable classic, whereas my Suzuki isn't. Don't have to be quick to be cool.

I had a very tidy GSX-750ES, didn't rate the performance that much though. The following GSX-600F blew it away and my tiny Honda CB-1 400 could leave either for acceleration. Funny things bikes :).

Mine was a GSX 750 ET, which was even slower, although it seemed fast enough after my X7. And had at the time about 3 second advantage over the Capri going to 60. My mate's GSX was the 1100 version which was a brute in its day.

The old black and white ones were better except they didn't have Erin Gray.

I used to love the ridiculous cliff hangers. There's one where Buddy is trapped in a room by Killer Kane. He rushes to the window to escape and Kane shoots him and he drops dead on the floor. At the start of the next episode they replay the same sequence except this time he rushes to the window, jumps out and escapes. I suppose the scam worked better when there was a week between episodes.

The Bird Box (Netflix)

Read about this awhile ago and watched it today. The film is based on the book of the same title by Josh Malerman.

Blurb about it

'When a mysterious force decimates the population, only one thing is certain -- if you see it, you die. The survivors must now avoid coming face to face with an entity that takes the form of their worst fears. Searching for hope and a new beginning, a woman and her children embark on a dangerous journey through the woods and down a river to find the one place that may offer sanctuary. To make it, they'll have to cover their eyes from the evil that chases them -- and complete the trip blindfolded.'

Got to say this is Sandra Bullock's finest performance, one she did blind folded.

I remember as a kid my dad taking me to see this. Not really a children's film - the humour largely went over the head of this nineteen sixties 10 year old. In those days you got two films, and the B-movie in this instance was a comedy about working on a building site, with no dialogue at all. Can't remember the name.

Hard Rain

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/51AJRYKJA3L.jpg

Implausible thriller, yet it’s quite gripping with a constantly changing ‘goodies’ and ‘baddies’ dynamic. Worth watching if you have a couple of hours to spare.

“A heavy rainstorm and severe flooding cause the sheriff and residents of a local town to evacuate and abandon it. However, an armoured vehicle carrying $3 million gets caught in the storm, making it a sitting duck for a gang of bandits, led by Jim (Morgan Freeman), who attempts to steal the cash. To prevent the bandits from getting their hands on the money, the van's driver, Tom (Christian Slater), runs off with it, but escape is not going to be easy with the water rising to life-threatening levels.”

Satisfactory ‘focus group’ ending?

Possibly, as I like Lee Marvin. Don't get me wrong, all the actors in these old movies are top notch and mostly far better than today's bunch. It's just that, despite that [and the fact that the storylines are generally good], I find that the films themselves come across as rather 'dated', when viewed in a modern home-cinema system, especially if they're in B&W...

I guess it's just one area where I prefer modern over vintage!:)

Its a good print.. Not that old but survived well. Ok its not going to blow you away, visually or soniclly but the quality shines through. Was a very sucessful film. Marvin won an Oscar, when they meant something and the film was nominated for quite a few too. 1965 I think, Jane Fonda was gorgeous too

Marco
13-03-2019, 11:48
Completely agree with all of that, especially female movie stars or that era looking very attractive. It was a time when men were men, and women were women - and embraced their femininity. Unlike today's scruffy, dishevelled 'she-males', walking the streets, posing as 'women'...

It was also a time when film stars behaved like film stars, and unlike today, you had to earn the title of being a 'celebrity'!

However, you're right, generally when I sit down to watch a film I like to have some visual and sonic 'fireworks', so a good action movie, which shows off the effects of the home-cinema system hits the spot. In that sense, I've always been somewhat of a superficial bastard!:eyebrows:

I always avoid any film with Van Damme, Chuck Norris or Steven Segal. Over the years I reckon I've saved myself enough hours to enjoy a nice holiday somewhere.

Steve did you get my pm about that frock ?

Sorry Al, I've had a look but can't see anything about frocks, but then I'm crap at finding anything. Like the time I went into town to buy some camouflage pants but couldn't find any :D

I saw something pm'd about doing next year's WW thing, and although I hadn't considered it before, it's now been stuck in my head all day! But then I got to thinking, Why not? If finances are up to it nearer the time, and my back (speakers weigh eighty pounds each). :) If I did do it I'd have to wear my "going to church" frock, as my Saturday night outfit is a bit short, and I wouldn't want folk copping an eyeful every time I change a record.

Now you will probably tell me I've misunderstood the message, and I've been fretting all day for nowt...

As if! But do you realise how long it is since our last sleepover? When we rented "Sleepless in Seattle" on VHS? I've gone up a few dress sizes since then :( That pillow fight we had was the stuff of legend, but you really shouldn't have put those Lego bricks in yours - that doctor in A&E was giving Al some right funny looks, and I imagine Welsh doctors have pretty much seen it all.

Agree, they caught lightning in a bottle with that one. Even though it was a budget film and they were mostly writing it as they went along.

Only thing that gets me is that Bergman's character, aside from her being quite cute, demonstrates nothing that might make me believe a bloke like Rick would fall so hard for her.

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41SSW0QTVXL.jpg

Wayne Wang's screen adaptation of Amy Tan's novel, which interweaves sixteen stories about four Chinese women and their Chinese-American daughters. The mothers all arrived in San Francisco after the Second World War and have gathered weekly to play mah-jongg ever since. When one of the women dies, Suyuan, they invite her daughter June (Ming-Na Wen) to fill her place. June is a young Chinese-American woman about to visit China to meet her long-lost half-sisters. At a farewell party held in her honour, the story of June's relationship with her mother is gradually revealed in flashback, along with the histories of three other mothers and their daughters.

Last night - 'Mirror' dir. Andrei Tarkovsky

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/41VJPFND1DL.jpg

'Mirror' is the celebrated Russian director Andrei Tarkovsky's most autobiographical work in which he reflects upon his own childhood and the destiny of the Russian people. The film's many layers intertwine real life and family relationships - Tarkovsky's father, the poet Arseny Tarkovsky, reads his own poems on the soundtrack and Tarkovsky's mother appears as herself - with memories of childhood, dreams and nightmares. From the opening sequence of a boy being cured of a stammer by hypnotism, to scene in a printing works which encapsulates the Stalinist era, "Mirror" has an extraordinary resonance and repays countless viewings.

Tonight - 'Rabbit-Proof Fence'

https://images-na.ssl-images-amazon.com/images/I/91nZB1Gq%2BfL._SL1500_.jpg

During the most part of the early to mid 20th century, Australia's government policy was that mixed race Aboriginal children would be better off being brought up as white and so forcefully removed them from their homes to be trained as domestic servants. This film follows the true story of 3 such children; cousins Molly, Gracie and Daisy, who in 1931 found themselves being taken from their parents, sent to an institution and forced to forget their family and culture. However, Molly leads her 2 cousins in a daring escape across 1,500 miles of outback with no water and only the fence erected across the country to stop the epidemic of rabbits as a guide. Kenneth Branagh plays the government official charged with the return of the girls and the story is based on the book by Doris Pilkington, the neice of Daisy.

Thunderball (1964)

https://i.imgur.com/n139Dwo.jpg

Not my favourite Bond by a long way although until Skyfall it was the highest grossing Bond film ever (adjusted for inflation). Does have some great moments, especially the fight scene in the teaser before the opening credits. This was back when Bond didn't have martial arts skills to rival Bruce Lee so he had to work hard if he wanted to kill a man with his bare hands. Much more realistic.

One thing I always find funny is the sequence in the health spa where the baddie catches Bond strapped to the stretching machine and turns it up full to try to kill him. Why would a health spa have a stretching machine that can be set to 'kill' speed? There's even a red 'danger zone' on the dial!

They do the same in Moonraker when he is in the G force machine. Why would it have a setting that is so fast that it would kill the man being tested?

On the other hand it's nonsense like this that is one of the reasons I love Bond films.

Would agree with all of that, but Thunderball does have the lovely Claudine Auger as a 'Bond girl'.

Talking of nonsense - if Dr No can crush a solid cast metal ornament with his metal prosthetic hands, why can't he grip the vertical reactor control rods and climb out?

Yes, I have that DVD. I love the depiction of Heaven as a massive civil service-like administration. The set design in 'Black Narcissus' was equally imaginative.

Powell and Pressburger were, IMO, ahead of their time, but Powell's reputation took a massive hit with the release of 'Peeping Tom' in 1960, which was deemed so offensive by the critics of the day, it effectively ended Powell's directing career.

(And since this is an audio forum, I ought to add that it is the only film I know of in which Wright and Weaire tape decks and Quad 57 electrostatic speakers make a fleeting appearance.)
