George Cukor's 1935 film version of David Copperfied, stars W. C. Fields, Lionel Barrymore, Madge Evans, Maureen O'Sullivan and Edna May Oliver. It may be 80 odd years old now but its still the best. Fields, a Dickens schollar, plays this straight(his only one I think).

Just finished watching BBC TVs In the Line of Duty - good ending to this current series, twist in the story was one I never saw coming.
What ruins it a bit is its so obviously filmed in Belfast and not an English city. Looking forward to the next series.

Actually struggled to get an X rating in UK this. Set In Texas in 1913 although filmed mostly in Mexico. On of the top westerns of all time.
Marvellous film. now need to wash the blood from my mind :D so Some Blackadder series 3 I think.

About half an hour in and it's very good so far - Gary Oldman superb as usual and the rest of the cast is decent too.
Interesting premise.
The only thing I can pick at so far is a musical motif they repeat over and over - I swear it's Sting's When We Dance.
If it's not, it's a blatant rip-off !

Time for a dose of Cat Ballou. This 1965 Comic western won Lee marvin an Oscar for his 2 roles, Kid Shelleen and Tim Strawn, his evil brother. The sexy Jane Fonda is the damsel in need of help(A likely story).. Stubby Kaye and Nat King Cole produce the song/story telling (Greek chorus) between the action brilliantly. It was one of the most popular films of that year.

Film 2 tonight is from Director Elia Kazan, the 1950 film noir, Panic in the Streets starring Richard Widmark, Barbara Bel Geddes, Paul Douglas and Walter Jack palance as he was once known.Also a small part for Zero Mostel. Edna and Edward Anhalt won an Oscar for Best Writing, Motion Picture Story. Film flopped at box office alas, possibly due to its on location and ow star actor status; nevertheless its a very good film.

Its worth a watch, but this could have been so much more. Way too much left not explained, plot holes, lack of motivation for some stuff happening. However its still not bad. Kind of HellRaiser, meets Re-animator, meets the Thing. Definite nod to Lovecraft, but not Lovecraft.

Don't forget this was crowdfunded by Indiegogo, which raised just over $80,000 - that's not a lot of money to make any film! It's worth watching the extras, particularly the Director's commentary, in which he talks about the various scenes and the very short amount of time that it had to filmed in - I think it was something silly like 3 days!
He mentioned that the special effects took up much of the budget, and that if there had been more money available, it would've looked better and had some extra scenes in too. I think there were a few of the fans who had funded the film helped out on it for nothing, including the disjointed contortionist creature later in the film. For such a low budget, I commend them for trying. I've watched it 3 times now, and don't regret the tenner that the Bluray cost, as its content is just the sort of horror I like (H.P. Lovecraft/JohnCarpenter). I believe Carpenter's name was mentioned only once during the commentary! The two guys who made it said that they weren't out to copy any other films, it's just that when you're writing a story and improvising it for the screen, it just turns out that way sometimes. It's base story is certainly very Assault On Precinct 13 :)

I think they managed a lot, but they left way too much unexplained. For instance who were the two guys at the beginning, why were they at that house, why did they kill the girl, why hunt the boy. What did they know and how, why did they take the book. The folks at the hospital well they were dumped into it. The Dr had a lot of followers, a bit more about that would have been useful to know, as well as exactly what he was doing and how. The discussions about the first creature encounter were lacking.... it just didn't feel like how real life would be.
I think the creature effects were very good, but more about the creatures would have been useful to know. At least in Lovecraft there is a backstory a mythos to fill in the gaps.
My criticism is really not aimed at the acting, which was pretty good, or the effects just the story was lacking a bit.
Still worth a watch for £5, cost of the DVD.

One of the better adaptations of a Philip K. Dick story. 'Total Recall' and 'Paycheck' were, IMO, utter crap and whilst 'Blade Runner' was an excellent film, it was so divorced from the book it's difficult to make a comparison.

Best of luck! I like the steampunk look of the sets (and also the depiction of the sandworms, though I'm in a minority there), but David Lynch was totally the wrong director to use.
Ridley Scott would have been a better choice of director, but he has/had already made his mark with Alien.
I love Frank Herbert's Dune, but found the Lynch's film hugely disappointing. :(

The Grapes of Wrath B&W(1940). film by John Ford and stars Henry Fonda, Jane Darwell and John Carradine. Screenplay by Nunnally Johnson from the book by John Steinbeck.
This is the latest bluray edition and a superb picture. This film won 2 oscars and was noinated for 5 more.

'Night of The Demon' is a classic, with real atmosphere and tension. I have it in my DVD collection. I rate this alongside 'The Dead of Night', with the awful dummy Hugo driving Michael Redgrave insane :eek:.
Yes 'Starship Troopers' is silly but that is intentional and part of its appeal I think. I like Roger Moore era James Bond for the same reason. It's supposed to be nonsense! That's the whole point! Some people just can't make that leap, though.

Shame as it really is a very good horror film - as are all similar films directed by Jacques Tourneur.

Superb film! Catherine Denerve is superb as the beautician descending into eventual lethal personal neuroses and hallucination. The hallucinations are especially disturbing.

For me his reputation rests on Dark Star, the original Escape From New York, and The Thing. At the time no-one was doing that sort of thing as well as he was. I like 'They Live' as well, despite the fact that it deserved a better budget and script.

In the Mouth of Madness is a very good film.
I like The Thing, first Halloween and They Live. The Fog is a nice film, much of its charm for me is in Adrienne Barbeau and her lovely voice.

Yup, box office, and no truth will be allowed to interfere with the moneymaking. Private Hook was a recipient of the VC and of good conduct pay... In actual fact Private Hook was a Methodist lay preacher, and a God-fearing person. He wasn't a drunkard. His family and regiment were furious about the portrayal.

'Glengarry Glenross' (1992)
First saw this a few years prior to being unexpectedly offered a job in sales. I took it out of curiosity to see if sales was anything like it is portrayed in this film. It turned out it was exactly like it is portrayed in this film. I lasted about 4 years. Adapted from the David Mamet play, the all-star cast informally referred to it as 'Death Of A Fucking Salesman' due to the amount of profanity. Aside from that, though this film has a great atmosphere about it. A must see if you've never come across it.

It's not often mentioned anymore which is a shame because it is really a minor classic of British film. An imaginative youth leading a buttoned down suburban life is unexpectedly taken on an adventure through time by a band of dwarfs. Sounds a bit like 'The Hobbit' but it's nothing like that at all. And no-one in the history of film, not even Morgan Freeman, does a more convincing God than old Sir Ralph does in this.
I have that, and yes it's an excellent Terry Gilliam film. Also agree about Ralph Richarson's 'God' (though Whoopie Goldberg's version in one of the Muppet movies deserves an honourable mention, as does Alanis Morissette's brief portrayal in 'Dogma').

Interesting, I will keep my eyes out for that one. Last really good Samurai film I saw was Hara-Kiri Death of a Samurai. This for me was an amazing film and very moving.

Went and saw this last night and its an interesting film, small scale, mainly focussed on a few characters, spitfire pilots, a small boat owner and the boats very young civilian crew, two soldiers, one French one British and a Naval commander. Its in places harrowing, moving but somewhat understated and matter of fact. There is plenty of drama and action and yet its not an epic film or a typical gung ho action film. Worth seeing and very well done.

In 1973 a squad of National Guardsman on exercise in the Bayou pointlessly anger Cajun trappers resulting in a deadly game of cat and mouse.
One of those films that totally grips you the first time you see it but loses some of that impact on repeated viewing. Still a good 'un though. Even Halliwell's gives it 4 stars.

The new series of Montelbano on BBC4. Sadly, on the evidence if the first episode, it looks like the shark has been jumped for this programme. It seemed way too long (always a bad sign), the plot was laughable, and the main characters seem to have turned into parodies of themselves. I might give it one more chance, but the signs aren't good so far.

You are a brave man :doh: These are awful, in my view, they make the Asylums cheap remakes often look good.
In saying that Syfy can make good shows, The Expanse (not seen in the UK yet via Sat), Dark Matter, Kiljoys and Defiance - which ended up cancelled :(

The Expanse (Blu Ray) Season 1
9 Episodes of wonderful, intelligent, well acted Sci - Fi. This is based on James S. A. Corey series of books.
Someone is trying to create a war between Earth, Mars and those who live on, in and mine the outer asteroids. Over and above that there is another threat, that doesn't, if it can, care where you come from, or live.
I really don't know why the Sci Fi channel isn't showing this in the UK, after all its a Sci Fi production (makes the other series look like crap), so why does bloody Netflix have it :( Fed up waiting I bought the Blu Ray from America.
Season 2 on its way to me. :D

A hero branded a coward is invalided out of WW1 only to voluntarily go back to protect the brother of his bird.
Not a bad film but it is poorly rated, I think because, although it follows the cardinal rule 'Always open with action', it then slows down to a glacial pace for a good hour before picking up again. Lots of Kubrick-style 'beautifully lit' scenes; it is a good-looking film, and a good story, just very badly paced.

I watch them sometimes on Sy-Fi channel but I always feel bad about it afterwards. There are maybe 10 decent episodes and about three good ones and even then Patrick Stewart is carrying the whole show.
