I watch them sometimes on Sy-Fi channel but I always feel bad about it afterwards. There are maybe 10 decent episodes and about three good ones and even then Patrick Stewart is carrying the whole show.

'Passchendaele' 2008

A hero branded a coward is invalided out of WW1 only to voluntarily go back to protect the brother of his bird.

Not a bad film but it is poorly rated, I think because, although it follows the cardinal rule 'Always open with action', it then slows down to a glacial pace for a good hour before picking up again. Lots of Kubrick-style 'beautifully lit' scenes; it is a good-looking film, and a good story, just very badly paced.

Basically he's dug up Elizabethan era Black Adder and tried to dish it up again, luke warm and without his co writers reigning in his un-funny bits... Enough funny bits so I'll risk the next one...just.... in case it gets better, but most jokes from about 1978 and sign posted in neon I'm afraid.

The Lady From Shanghai.

A strange noir-ish thriller starring (and produced and directed by) Orson Welles, co-starring his then-wife, Rita Hayworth. Welles attempts the worst Irish accent you're ever likely to hear, and is also physically wrong for the part (someone like Robert Mitchum would have been perfect), but it's an interesting film, with some innovative photography, and a famous final scene set in a Hall of Mirrors at a deserted amusement park.

Ann Todd is a classical pianist who is in a nursing home following a nervous breakdown; James Mason her overbearing guardian, Herbert Lom the psychologist trying to help her recover. Apparently, this is the tenth most popular film of all time in terms of tickets sold, beating Lord of the Rings and Harry Potter. A bit creaky, but good performances from the lead actors.

I have about thirty or so VHS tapes. Keeping them until I get replacements on DVD; if and when they become available.

Those VHS tapes I have got rid of were recordings of films off the TV and which have now been replaced by DVD copies. Other home-recordings are of programmes and documentaries which I will review in due course and decide whether to keep them or not.

Agree, the Mitchum version promises so much and delivers so little. Michael Winner was a crap director though. He should have stuck to criticising the cutlery on Concord.

Snap! As chance would have it I've been ploughing through the Rathbone/Bruce box-set. A bit of mixed set IMO, the direction is middling. Love Basil Rathbone though. He served as an intelligence officer with the London Scottish in WW1 and won the military Cross for undertaking the highly dangerous work of scouting German positions during daylight.

Good, as in enjoyable ? No. It was a horrific watch, history I knew a little off but to see it dramatised left me upset. I am aware of the persecution of Catholics in England, and what was done in the name of Protestantism, but to see what the Anglican church did, what the crown did was truly awful. By the same regard seeing what the Inquisition did to heretics, not Catholics was also horrific.

My view is none of these people regardless of denomination were actually Christians.

I thought that it was well done, acting was good, it looked good but the topic is horrible. One point I would make that any Englishman or woman burning a Guy on bonfire night who bad mouths the Orange Order or Bonfire builders in Northern Ireland needs to examine their rank hypocrisy, because Bonfire Night is exactly the same thing, anti Catholic hate.

I do feel it was horrifically violent and being so close to the watershed, well I think a later start time might have been better. It pulls no punches depicting people being hung drawn and quartered, crushed to death and burnt at the stake.

not got through season 1 yet. no interest in violence for the fun of it in programs. its not needed to be shown graphically like that imv. One of the reasons I admired the film makers of yesteryear as they could imply stuff just as well. doesnt bother me it its intrinsic and not overly done. Warewolf in london for instance

Season Two of The Expanse so far is fabulous :)

I think Gun Powder needed to show the horror of what was done to give a context to why the Catholic rebels wanted to take down the king and parliament, problem is their preferred extreme was no better in regard to how it was persecuting those it declared to be heretics.

It only lasted 10 episodes then was cancelled. Same as another late 70s series called Otherworld. somewhat similar to the Fantastic Journey.

Good luck with Discovery, not seen it yet, but I am aware of the massive issues that surround it.

First two episodes were back context filler of the main characters past, episode 3 is the real pilot episode.

Lifelong Trek fan here and this to me is amongst the best Trek yet.
More modern, different production values sure, and quite dark (think new Battlestar Galactica) but the show's doing its own thing whilst staying true to what made Trek what it was.
Just...more realistic.

Its not a baddie/puzzle/mission of the week episodic show like all the others, but an ongoing storyline stretched over the Season.
And it's getting intriguing whats developing...

While I haven't seen it yet I have kept an eye on the opinions and views of those that have and it's not prime time in the original universe, that is the general consensus among those that have seen it. For me there is so much wrong with this new series that I hope there is an explanation for the massive cockups and the strong hints coming from those behind the scenes is that a parallel universe explanation will be used to wipe the slate clean and save the show.

Original show runner Brian fuller left after CBS messed with what it was to be, and even taking into account modern TV production values it did not need to mess things up as it has. Pretty much everything is wrong, tech is wrong, ships are wrong, weapons wrong, uniforms, klingons their tech and appearance. Discovery looks more like JJ Abrahams Trek than what it should be. For me I watch Star Trek Continues and Phase 2, which are excellent considering they are fan made. I think it's very obvious now why CBS went after Axanar, frankly it pissed all over Discovery.

Anyway I have been watching The Orville and enjoying that even though it's via the PC rather than the TV.

Too much humour, worked great in the Guardians of the Galaxy, but this film was too much of a piss take at times, needed to be a bit darker in my view. Too much humour in the last Spiderman film as well.

Looking forward to Justice League, DC films get the balance better I think, darker, with humour where appropriate.

Made for Carlton TV, this 1996 version of the Daphne du Maurier novel is bound to be compared with the Hitchcock B&W film version starring Laurence Olivier.

IMO, it is an equally good version making the most of a stellar cast of Charles Dance, Emila Fox, Diana Rigg, Faye Dunaway, Johnathan Cake and Geraldine James.

Of the movies in my collection, I'm struggling to think of a better one than 'Nobody's Fool' with Paul Newman. It's remarkable, if understated. Lovely stuff!

I just saw Suburbicon last night at a Cineworld Unlimited screening. Will be well worth a look in the cinema, on streaming or disc (if you're a collector like me). The 50s American vibe reminded me of Pleasantville (the fantasy where Tobey MacGuire disappears into a fantasy 1950s soap opera through an old TV), and its plot is very like Fargo - which is no surprise when you consider the Coen Brothers shelved this script in the 80s (?) and then wrote Fargo instead. Quirky, a little twisted and interesting. A good thriller.

Lots of comment in reviews about the awkward inclusion of the neighbouring black family being harassed by white supremacists - and it kind of feels like it doesn't belong in the movie. That said, these are the only beacons of humanity in a pretty grim set-up, where almost none of the white characters really attracts any sympathy.

Paint your Wagon... a bit of light comic entertainment starring Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood, with Jean Seburg as the female interest and ends up married to both.(goldrush married).
Didnt get great reviews for some reason; maybe because the musical was all but dead when it came out in late 60's. I love it and saw it many times in cinema when it came out.
