Great nod to Trading Places in the script to Coming to America...sure you spotted it already Grant. :)
Love that movie, one of John Landis' best.
Bit of a guilty pleasure of mine, wheel it out every six months or so...never gets tired.
Next up...Trading Places? :)
Samuel L Jackson is the bloke who tries to rob the restaurant. Just a bit part before he was famous.

So, SO many great bits in that film, seen it dozens of times, love it.

Beverley Hills Buntz
If you remember Hill Street Blues you'll remember Detective Norman Buntz (Dennis Franz) who, in the last episode, punches Chief Daniels and resigns.
In this spin-off 'dramady' series Buntz goes to LA with Sid The Snitch (Peter Jurasik) and starts a detective agency. 13 episodes were filmed but only nine were ever shown, and only once each, and only in the USA. It's never been released on VHS or DVD and for almost 30 years it was impossible to see it.
Now some bloke has discovered that he still has 6 of the 9 episodes on tape from back in the day. Sound and picture are a little rough and you'll need to skip the ads but after 3 decades we can finally get to see how it all worked out for Norm.

Wheeler Dealers are supposed to try and make a profit, Car SOS they don't. The later episodes they do push the boat out though. The Lincoln Continental one is worth a watch if you've any interest in Yank Tanks. They do a corking job on that.

I'll look out for that, sounds good. Used to do a bit of that myself. Mk3 Escorts. Mate did the mechanicals, I did all the monkey work like the valeting. Buy them at £50 sell them at £325. The reason for £325 was that my mate was convinced that was the sweet price point, and it was his show. They did sell fast, though.

I used to do Minis. Not for money though. Just 'cos I liked them. Mine went pretty quick! There's not a job on those I've not done. All ended up modified and tuned.
My van was geared to pull 106mph at max revs in top and left things like XR2's standing! Owned thirteen Minis.

Denzel Washington is an ex something-or-other, blah blah. He takes a dislike to some drug dealers and kills them all.
And that's pretty much it, really. I don't know if there is supposed to be any connection with the TV series but the good thing about the TV series was that Edward Woodward was an overweight old man but he could still beat up young punks. Now Denzel may be knocking on a bit these days but he's still a big, athletic looking bloke so it isn't really surprising that he can go through the baddies like a dose of salts. There's no jeopardy, you never think he is going to get so much as a scratch and he doesn't.
There's no memorable scenes or great dialogue, just him killing people and lots of arty cinematography. A complete waste of the world's resources.

Well that was a waste of time, you never saw them come off the van at the other end so don't know what he did with them, they looked in good shape. It was intimated he got the rest of the 'Hifi set up' but couldn't see what that was, could have been a Strathclyde turntable.

I can recommend USS Indianapolis; Men of courage. The true story of the ship that delivered the atomic bombs later dropped on Hiroshima and Nagasaki and it's subsequent sinking by a Japanese submarine. Very well written and acted, even Nicholas Cage doesn't over act for once. It also doesn't shy away from detailing the attempted cover up and court martial of Captain McVey. 8 out of 10 from me.

Another Love Boat fan, yay!
I don't remember it being so cheesy. I was quite surprised.
I didn’t remember it having canned laughter but only in certain scenes? (Usually involving the Barman, the purser and the doctor). Sometimes they seem to press the laughter button too early before the ‘funny’ line has been completely delivered.
I think they originally showed it without the canned laughter in the UK, same as they did with MASH. Or maybe I'm not remembering that well, aside from the other day I last watched it in about 1984.
Some channels now show MASH with the laugh track on and it doesn't work at all. Ruins it. They aren't too good at judging when it should come in either.

The BBC are re-running the 1990s Pride and Prejudice (the one with Colin Firth), which we're binge-watching over a couple of evenings while it's pissing down with rain. It stands the test of time well, although the writer/producer Andrew Davies was over-used on adaptations of classic novels, which got more and more OTT and anachronistic as time went on.

It's been a very long time since a movie has affected me so much. I spent a long time afterwards thinking how, in some ways, the film summed up all that is wrong with the world today - the sheer unbridled greed of a small proportion of society.

I've watched it three times and picked up on new things (or bits I missed) each time.

'The New Avengers'
On True Entertainment channel. Normally it is just flagrant false advertising on this channel and they just show pap. But now they start with proper telly. And a classic episode as well, the one where Purdey is kidnapped and Steed punches Gambit in the balls so hard it knocks him out.
Everything about this is proper telly. The opening credits. The theme tune. Great characters. Everyone, male or female, agreed that Purdey was the best. The cars: You've got a Jaguar XJS and Broadspeed, Rover SD, Triumph TR7. Plus good story with loads of fighting and action. Brian Clemens was the writer, and he could always write a good spy yarn; he wrote all the best episodes of 'The Professionals' as well.
The channel advises the some scenes are unsuitable for children. Well I watched it when it was first on in 1977 age 8 and I didn't have any issues. I remember discussing this one on the yard at school on the following Monday morning, that punch in the groin being the main focus of course.
No-one is making anything as good as this today.

An absolute classic. It should be on everyone's "100 films to see before you die" list. (Actually I hate those 'things to do/see/hear/places to visit before you die lists'!)

Just finished watching 'Thin Ice' from the Jesse Stone TV crime film series with Tom Selleck starring. Fabulous acting and beautifully atmospheric, a great amount of thought goes into the Jesse Stone films and it shows.

Great film, apparently Dana Andrews was permanently pissed while making it.
Caught up with this at the weekend, quite watchable.

It is great but Once Upon A Time In America is the best gangster film ever. Then Goodfellas. Then Scarface, then maybe the original Scarface with Paul Muni. Then White Heat.
They were different style tbh. I like the Paul Muni scarface. Got it on dvd as I do the other 3. But 2 of them are more mafia rather than out and out gangster
