WOW this is very good, as was Season 1 :D
3 Days of the Condor 1975, directed by Sidney Pollack and stars Robert Redford Faye Dunaway and Max von Sydow.

An eerie reality to that film even now 44 years on. It could have been made today and would still be relevant. One if the great movies.
Another classic now, but a comedy.. Some like it Hot from 1959...60 years old and still fresh.

I find the Postman Pat movies a bit scary in places.
Fabulous blood spattered who dun what and why western with a difference.
Everytime I see it I'm impressed and I'm not really into this level of violence.
A Must for folk who like realism.

I enjoyed Girl on the Train.
I watched solo a few days ago. A very good documentary about a lunatic who climbs big rocks with no ropes. Mustve used drones with some of the shots.

World War Z started well but lost its way about two thirds in. Not a bad film though.

I've been having a horror day today, watched The conjuring 1&2 and now watching Annabelle Creation. I have to admit that the first conjuring made me jump like a little girl a few times.

I like it, and considering the mess it was behind the scenes it turned out well I think.
Bought Iron Sky 2 yesterday on Blu Ray, hoping its better than the reviews are saying.

Since I heard about this posthumously released film of Aretha Franklin, I have been wanting to see it. A film, directed by Sidney Pollack, documenting two nights in 1972 when Aretha Franklin sang and recorded gospel songs at a Baptist church in Los Angeles. Along with a small ensemble of organ, guitars and drums, Aretha Franklin also performs at the piano, and is often accompanied by the Southern California Community Choir. The entire performance was recorded for Warner Brothers, who also commissioned the filming.
Having a limited public appeal, the film is not on general release and is only being shown in cinemas that tend to cater for art-house films. So finding that it was being shown in London in a multiplex cinema, and expecting to be unable to buy tickets if we just turned up, we booked in advance. Whether it was indeed due to limited appeal, or the fact that we watched the lunchtime viewing, we had the cinema to ourselves and were able to sit in the best seats - and needn't have booked at all!
The film was made using video cameras, which despite being professional equipment, only represented the best technology available at the time. And it shows - the visuals are not the sharpest, the lenses do not maintain autofocus whilst zooming, and the whole presentation is considerably inferior than it would have been had 35mm cine cameras been used.
But does any of that matter? No, because the sound recording is excellent; using high quality equipment such as Neumann and Shure microphones and Nagra IV-S reel-to-reel machines, amongst others. And obviously, it is the acoustic performance that is the raison d'etre of the film.
Aretha's performance is electrifying: singing the gospel songs she learnt as a teenager in church. Even if you have no religious convictions, you can't help but being moved by the sheer emotional intensity of her singing. The mixed congregation and audience obviously felt the same (as did Mick Jagger and Charlie Watts of the Rolling Stones, who were in the audience for the second night).
The recording of the performance became one of Aretha Franklin's best selling records. Try to see it if you can.

I think perhaps he doesn't have what it takes for a leading role, and does better as a supporting actor. I thought he was great in "The Revenant", and the part suited him perfectly. As you say, a "darker" part.
Yes, The Revenant was fantastic.
I do agree, although I think it's more about him having the *right* role, whether that's on a leading or support basis. I'd like to see him do a gangster film, or play some other violent/brutal role, possibly even in a war film, as for me his naturally menacing and brooding demeanour would be perfect!
Overall, for me, he suits the role of being a 'baddy', much more than that of a 'goody, or neutral one. So yes, he needs to be given something darker and more hard-hitting.

Some of the performances were mesmerising, although on set, AF herself seemed somewhat 'dispassionate', until that is she started singing... I see what you meant about the 'patchy' quality of the production, due the old equipment used, but for me that just added to the charm:)
We'll be planning on going to see more of these 'arthouse' movies in future.

Watching the Mist TV series on Netflix. Similar but different to the movie. Not sure where I am on this yet. It was cancelled so there won't be any more of it. Its very dark.

Typical WW2 heroics, the officers are all a bit stiff upper lip and 'jolly decent chaps', whereas the non-commissioned ranks are all portrayed as oiks. The 'special effects' look like sparklers and the occasional cardboard ships none too convincing.

Years ago Tarantino was supposed to do this but he dropped out so they got in his non-union British equivalent, Guy Ritchie. He does his best to raise it above the usual retro TV spin-off but it isn't enough to make it a classic. Or worth a second watch for that matter. How crazy good would Tarantino's version have been? We will never know.
Worth a watch or not then? If done reasonably well, it's my kind of thing:)

Courting controversy here but I preferred the Kemp's portrayal.
Tom Hardy, extremely impressive in the roles I have seen him in, very adaptable and shows a depth of conviction.
Just watched Murder Mystery on Netflix (wife's choice - that's my excuse!) Jennifer Aniston doesn't seem to age, Adam Sandler still makes me cringe with embarrassment... But overall an amusing yarn.
Finished Season 2 of Killing Eve on BBC iPlayer last night - really enjoyed that.
But best of all was the Brands Hatch British Superbike meeting - especially the Supersport Sprint race - no spoilers, but worth a watch if you like your bike racing.

Lol... I totally fail to get 'worked up' over my feelings towards ANY 'celebrity', be it pop star, film/TV star, or whatever. So in this instance, I'll happily play Joe's 'apathy card'!:D
In terms of 'pop stars'/musicians, I either like their music or I don't. As long as they're not murderers, rapists or child molesters, I couldn't give a monkey's what kind of people they are, as I judge them on their MUSIC, nothing else.
So, in that respect, I HATED Oasis with a passion (and most of said 'Brit pop' shite), and for me the Gallagher's solo output since isn't much better!

Finished watching the Yacht Rock music programs BBC 4, they were ok, but shallow and left out even brief mention of a lot of cool artists, even Jay Graydon's bands weren't mentioned though his work on others albums were :scratch:
To me its West Coast rock, and the Yacht Rock genre name tag doesn't really fit what is mostly lite AOR.

Just not my kind of music, as indeed wasn't what was around for a large section of the 90s, especially as I 'missed' most of that era, whilst working 18-hour days (sometimes non-stop) building up my business, and so the vast majority of the 90s passed me by. Hated all that Manchester-derived bollox, such as the Happy Mondays, etc, and the bullshit 'rave culture' that surrounded it...
In terms of TV personalities, etc, as I said, I always laugh when folk get all 'worked up' or express strong feelings towards such, as I'm simply not wired that way. Yes, I have my preferences, but I don't 'hate' anyone, or the opposite. I have no strong feelings either way towards ANYONE on TV - save perhaps at a push, Trump, but only because he's such an odious and dangerous asshole, and who's brainless actions could have potentially disastrous consequences for the world we live in.
However, I do tend to like the TV/radio personalities most people hate (such as Piers Morgan, Jeremy Clarkson, Jo Brand, Danny Baker, etc), as I like folk with a PERSONALITY: confident, often controversial people, who aren't afraid of saying what they think, regardless of whom they might 'upset', and who have strong opinions on many matters. I might completely disagree with them, but I'll usually respect them for having the balls to say exactly what they think, and not being afraid to stand out from the crowd as a non-conformist.
What I *do* HATE are bland wishy-washy fence-sitters, devoid of personality, which unfortunately today's obsession with political correctness has bred and foisted upon us on our screens: grey cardboard cutouts, who are about as interesting or exciting as a wet weekend in Weymouth, posing as 'TV personalities/celebrities', when they simply don't deserve the title!:rolleyes:

Nah. Did you see him interviewing Trump? Frost v Nixon it wasn't. Morgan asking easy questions and fawning all over Trump. Granted he probably wouldn't have got the gig if he'd been more incisive in his questioning, but Trump's team had clearly identified him as a soft touch. Clarkson might have been more aggressive.

I have to admit that since investing in a half-decent home-cinema system, it's changed the type of films I prefer to watch. I was never the biggest fan of many of the 'golden oldies' anyway, but even less so now when there's no impressive Dolby Digital surround-sound effects or 4K picture resolution for the system to show off!

Can't be dong with 'complex plots', anything that requires too much work to follow, and tries to be too clever or 'arty'/up its own ass, or long periods in films when there's next to hee-haw happening (even if the acting is 'superb'), when it's supposed to be about ENTERTAINMENT. Oh, or ancient shit that my parents would've watched when I was kid.

I don't get this thing about not watching black and white films. All of Bogart's best films are in black and white. And Cagney's. 'The Hill' is in B&W even though it was made well into the colour era. Then you've got 'Raging Bull', 'I Was a Fugitive From A Chain Gang', 'Scarface', 'Seven Samurai', 'Throne Of Blood'...it's a long list.
You're going to deny yourself the pleasure of those films which are all way better than the tat made today just because of the lack of colour? That's daft. After a bit you forget that there's no colour anyway.
Yeah I know where you're coming from, and you're right. Don't get me wrong, I'd still watch those old films (and indeed have done in the past) and enjoy them, if I was forced to;) but these days that's not what really floats my boat.
It's a bit like playing a great piece of music, which has been recorded badly, through a revealing hi-fi system... Yes, the music's still great, but the overall listening experience is rather disappointing. That's how I feel with watching old movies on a modern home-cinema system.

You'll get bored with the multi channel sound and all that business eventually, everyone does.
Who knows, but I suspect not, as there's more than enough suitable material to keep me occupied for the foreseeable future, especially as I don't watch films that often.
In any case, I didn't say that I wouldn't ever watch classic old films and not enjoy them, just that they aren't my 'go to' genre... Perhaps to appreciate them properly, what I need to do is set up a new system with an old CRT television and VCR, find the films in question on VHS tape, and enjoy them all in glorious mono!:lol:;)

I’d say watching black and white movies is equal to listening to music on mono records. It may lack the sound stage, etc, but it doesn’t affect the performance. To boldly announce that you refuse to listen to mono recordings, would seem rather strange?
We get the Turner Classic Movie channel on our cable, for free! Well, no extra charge anyway, and the movies are commercial free, which is nice. Their old black and white movies run the gamut, from stuffy old artsy stuff, filmed in one room, to grand westerns with constantly running horses and gunfire! But in the end, a good movie, is a good movie. And, I find it true that the earlier movie stars were actually better actors. With no special effects to assist, they actually had to act their way through a scene.
And the occasional cult classic! Like “White Zombi”, or “Gun Crazy”, both worth a look.

I totally agree! I detest a movie that purposely tries to make you cry! Who needs it? What the hell do I want to get all weepy for? Most so called love stories are actually about the lack of or loss of love, with sad endings. Romeo and Juliette? Romantic? They freaking killed themselves! How in hell is that romantic? And what was that recent Star Wars movie, Renegade? Something like that? It was the worst of all Star Wars movies, for terrible loop holes in the plot, such as a guy who appeared to be a Chinese ninja, how did a Chinese ninja wind up in a galaxy long ago and far away? But they killed everyone at the end! Purposely super sad, a real tear jerker, is that what Star Wars fans want? I seriously doubt it.

This was the last film made starring Natalie Wood, who sadly died during filming.
Typical of the future shock science fiction genre; where scientific research produces something of potential benefit to mankind, only to have it hijacked and subverted by military interests.
The laboratory scenes looks realistic, though the ending where the military usurpers get their come-uppance is farcical. 7.5/10

Probably a toss-up between first Star Wars, Apocalypse now, Glengarry-Glenross and The Maltese Falcon. With Goodfellas, The Hill, Get Carter and A Bridge Too Far close behind. There's no limit to how many times I can watch those films.

Superb movie.
Connery is in several of my all time favourite movies, 'The Name of The Rose' and 'The Hill' for instance.

Damn straight. Connery is great in it as is Ian Hendry. And it's Harry Andrew's finest hour. 'I'm in charge here! I say what goes and what don't go!'

Edward Zwick directs this drama starring Anthony Hopkins and Brad Pitt. In the remote foothills of the Montana Rockies he builds a ranch where he brings up his three sons. When his youngest son Samuel (Henry Thomas) returns from the city with his beautiful fiancée Susannah (Julia Ormond), she attracts the attention of his older brothers Alfred and Tristan (Pitt and Aidan Quinn). After one of the brothers is lost in the First World War, the surviving siblings return home to rebuild their lives, and fight once more for Susannah's love.
Didn't think I would like this film much, but pleased to say I found it quite engrossing and thoroughly enjoyed it. 9/10

Not seen it, but sounds like just my thing... I like something bleak, harrowing, and preferably psychologically disturbing. Can't be doing with any of this 'cheery' bollox!:D

Looks interesting, but I'd need to be in the right mood... Talking of old classics, what about 'The Illustrated Man', with Rod Steiger? He was a superb actor, and for me that was a great film:)

I've seen it but thought it fairly terrible. Not so much Steiger but pretty much everything else. Script was ghastly, and the director who's name escapes me hadn't a clue.
Another of his good ones was duck you sucker with big Coburn. He played a Mexican so well. His career went down hill with age alas. Think he suffered depression

The carry ons are amazingly still as popular as ever. Even the yanks liked them apparently.
Very short filming times and low budget but it was a great group of actors who all knew ea h others timing so there were a lot of one takes.
Agree tho not everyone's cuppa tea.

Carry on nurse ran for 30 months solid in california. Kyber and Cleo were tied at no 10 of best ever British films.
But yes they are not serious cinema. Think the budgets were very small. Kenny Williams only got £800 for starring in sergeant

Ah yes! On my list of most watched movies I’d have to include “High Plains Drifter”. In the same genre as Good, Bad and Ugly. I forgot to mention it, because while I watched the others on purpose, this movie gets a ton of air time on TV. And when I see it on the TV Guide, I’ll watch it again.

Probably Top Gun, though the original Italian Job would be close. I watched TG at least 5 times at the cinema when it first came out - only movie I have ever seen more than once at the cinema.

For me, Star Wars wins for the movie I’ve seen the most at the cinema. When I was a teenager, back in 1977, when it first came out, it played forever at a local drive in theater. So my friends and I would get a car load and go see it every weekend, I saw it 17 times! It was a cult thing, during the light saber fights people would jump out of their cars and act out the scenes, people shouting out the lines during the major scenes, everyone was totally into it! I was more into getting drunk and laughing at the people. I do miss the drive in.

Memento is another one of those 'situation recycling' plot movies, like Groundhog Day and Triangle. I thought Triangle the best of the three.
