Not seen this since the first time..
had the VHS from the 90’s, watched it once.

After seeing Blade Runnner 2049 I felt I needed to revisit this.

Stunning....landmark filmaking.
Yes, its a cartoon..and so was Scooby Doo, this is something different. :)

Talk of a long awaited live action remake soon.

As the snow continues to fall here in Wrexham and it looks rather bleak and wintry outside, it's time to cosy up beside the log fire and watch a good movie on the home-cinema system, so I've just selected this from Sky Movies:

bluray has...English: DTS-HD Master Audio 5.1 (48kHz, 24-bit) maybe not enough bandwidth on download. i know streaming is lower rate than bluray

Lol, nah was only kidding. Doesn't bother me, as it sounds superb just in stereo. I'm astounded at the picture quality though, from 50-year old technology... I guess some of it would have been valve-driven. The colours are so rich looking and vibrant!

the bluray is fantastic. the stream i have from either amazon or apple is very good too but bluray remaster is amazing as you say for a 50 year old film. got soundtrack on cd and vinyl too. both remastered in italy

A lot of money, yes, but in the context of films, quite cheap. Bear in mind that 'Ben Hur' made in 1925 cost $3.9 million. And that was in black and white with no sound.

'Went The Day Well' (1943)

Dastardly Nazi paratroops disguised as Polish infantry take over an English village as the spearhead for an invasion.

Top film this and the inspiration for 'The Eagle Has Landed' as well as the original 'Dad's Army' film, which both borrow heavily from it.

By the time in the war this was made the Germans were doing badly on all fronts and there was no longer a danger of an invasion of the UK, so it was more a 'what might have been' than an outright propaganda film.

Obviously it works out for the plucky and resourceful Brits in the end. Great bit at the finish where a bloke takes us to the grave of the Germans in the church yard and says 'This is the only bit of England they ever got.'

Oh,
watched Star Wars The Last Jedi last night.

Enjoyed it better than Force Awakens, took some chances and wasn’t what I expected and thats always a good thing.
Always have a chuckle when unhappy fans have thier “childhood robbed”, and a lot of folk did just that.

Yet they complained that Force Awakens was just a remake of the original?

Based on the film of the same name, made in 1966 and starring Michael Cain and Shirley MacLain, this ‘scam comedy’, despite being a Coen Brothers’ production is a poor remake of the original. It has its comedic moments but they are few and far between and often slapstick in nature, and the cast comprising Colin Firth, Tom Courtney, Alan Rickman and Cameron Diaz is largely wasted. 4/10

Pretty much without question, the biggest selling point of caper movie Gambit is the names of the people who wrote it. The screenplay to the film, a remake of the 1966 movie of the same name, was penned by the terrific Coen Brothers, and there are several of their touches quietly dotted right throughout the movie. A full-on Coen Brothers movie though this is not.
Gambit is also a film that's attracted quite a cast. Headlined by Oscar-winner Colin Firth, the line-up also features a wonderful Alan Rickman, a playful Cameron Diaz and an underrated turn from the regularly underappreciated Stanley Tucci. Each turns in good work, and each is great fun to watch.
That said, even with those ingredients in place, there's a sense that Gambit doesn't always quite add up the film you might suspect. It's certainly a lot of fun at its best, and there's quite an old school, traditional feel to it. The humour's variable, but then there's a lot of upbeat positivity underpinning Gambit, that ultimately makes it hard to resist.
It would have certainly been interesting had the Coen Brothers decided to direct Gambit as well as write it. As things stand, though, it's an undemanding, entertaining and re-watchable film, which could have been just that little bit more. Well worth watching, but readjust your expectations accordingly. -- Jon Foster

This is a film of the concert by the Stones performing at the Beacon Theatre, New York in 2006. Curious mix of a rock video and part documentary, including some very out-dated interviews. Not one of Scorsese’s finest efforts by any means but hugely enjoyable nonetheless. 8/10

now a more modern near great, The Ipcress File from 1965, and starring Michael Caine.

Probably the most accurate depiction of British spy-craft during the '60s (along with 'Callan'); unlike the sheer fantasy of the Bond franchise.

Sidney J. Furie's direction, with his angular camera shots is brilliant, as is the wonderful John Barry music score. The sequel: 'Funeral in Berlin' was also good, but the final part of the Harry Palmer trilogy: 'Billion Dollar Brain', was IMO rubbish.

'Beneath Loch Ness' (2001)

What if you decided to make a film but couldn't really be bothered to come up with a story? You'd just pick a story that's already been made, change a few names and then make a very bad film.

In this case the story ripped off is Jaws. Only instead of being a shark that is killing people and scaring the tourists away it is the Loch Ness monster.

Bennet from 'Commando' is in this as is Patrick Bergen and Lysette Anthony (no longer at the height of her powers but you still probably would). But it is indescribably shit. I was up at Loch Ness last summer for a week and although I didn't go everywhere I really don't remember it looking like California. And I've been to California and its similarity to the Scottish Highlands was marked by its absence.

And that is probably the best thing about this film. You get a bit of stock footage of the real Loch Ness then you cut to the actors, who are supposedly standing on its shoreline, and they are in California. Quite obviously, no intention of trying to hide it, they are in California. There are palm trees and everything.

They go to a pub and it is just an American bar, they go to the hospital and all the nurses are wearing American nurse uniforms. The bloke even pays at the bar in dollars. I didn't try that in Scotland but I'm willing to bet that it won't work.

And you may be surprised to learn that the Coastguard is now 'H M Coastguard'. And that their Scottish HQ is located in California.

Kubrick managed to film 'Full Metal Jacket' in London when it was set in Vietnam. And you couldn't tell. So what the problem was here I can only guess at.

In summation, not as bad as 'Stonehenge Apocalypse' in the same way that Bono is not as bad as Bob Geldof.

I enjoyed it, but it was a little too short (at 1hr 27 mins) and could've done with being another half an hour longer, to facilitate more unexpected twists and turns! Two hours, or so, for me, is about right for a good film :)

Anyway, there's a sequel, so will catch that next and see what happens! :cool:

Yeah, I'd agree, hence why I classed it as "disposable". Good work out for the home-cinema system, though! I'll probably keep it for that reason (optimizing 'bang & crash' settings) :)

My Kuro started to need re-tuning every time I switched it on.
Pioneer sent a plug-in 'patch' , but unfortunately.....it was for a different model (durrr...) so my Kuro seized up.

(I live in Bristol)....as if.....!
so, eventually, got a pallet, it was collected. Then.....nothing.
Rang DK Audio (the fixers) who couldn't find it! It's only a big pallet with a 50 inch TV in a box, after all.
Eventually (which corner was it abandoned in?) they DID find it.
But, 3 weeks on, STILL no sign!
So I'll be watching the Utd V Spurs game on the iMac.

It's the result of the 'throw-away society'?

Costco usually tell you just to take stuff back and get a new one, for example!

I've just finished watching 'Casablanca' (yet again :)) on ITV3. It's still a bloody marvellous film with a fantastic cast.

I checked the reviews on IMDB. It's the only movie I've seen reviewed there with a near endless string of 10/10 scores and well deserved, it's one of the greatest 'classic' films.

One thing I did notice that I'd not registered before. Ingrid Bergman's eyes seem to glow. Very strange and striking too. Nobody else in the film has this.

My Man Godfrey was deemed "culturally significant" by the United States Library of Congress and selected for preservation in the National Film Registry.
its what was deemed screwball comedy in the day. it had a serious message re rich and poor etc. it was also of course well made.
a remake was done with niven in the title role in 50-s.. wasnt as good tho/.

'Bladerunner 2049'

Much better than I feared - it does, IMO, need repeated viewing to understand exactly what is going on. (The Extra Features explaining what has happened since 2019 is essential viewing; preferably they should be watched before the main film.) The CGI is superb. It certainly resolves the ambiguity as to whether BladeRunners are specialised Replicants or not.

'Taxi Driver'

Difficult viewing, but a classic nonetheless.

Story line for Identity:

"When a vicious storm breaks out in the Nevada desert, 10 people seek refuge in an isolated motel. At the same time, a serial killer (Pruitt Taylor Vince) under the care of psychiatrist Doctor Mallick (Alfred Molina) -- who has just found the killer's revealing journal -- awaits execution for murdering a group of motel guests. Seen that a couple of times Marco. Enjoyed it.

Good movie on ITV4 in a minute. 'Payback' with Mel Gibson. Seen it loads of times, but it's always worth a watch.

I think you and I have similar tastes. Granty's too into his 'oldies' and Blackadder, lol [not my bag]... I prefer something 'darker':D However, I do like his taste in war films and westerns;)

Finally got to see this tonight...

Wow!

What an intense and moving film.
Such a great ensemble cast. Well developed characters all.

The kind of film that stays with you for a long, long time.

Loved it.
