Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery

This is almost twenty years old now. Where does that go? At the time I thought Mike Myers could be the new Peter Sellars but it never really happened. Still good though.

My favourite bit is the group therapy session with Doctor Evil where they ask him to talk about his childhood:

'My father was a relentlessly self-improving boulangerie owner from Belgium with low grade narcolepsy and a penchant for buggery. My mother was a fifteen year old French prostitute named Chloe with webbed feet. My father would womanise, he would drink, he would make outrageous claims; like - he had invented the question mark.'

ending the day with Frankie Howerd in Up Pompeii (1971) with Michael Hordern and the very sexy Barbara Murray as his owners. The nubile Madeline Smith, the less than nubile Rita Webb, Bill Fraser, Lance Percival and Patrick Cargill also star. You'll either love it or hate it I guess but it is right up my proverbial Platea

Great Expectations (1946) Starring John Mills(Sir), Bernard Miles(Sir), Valerie Hobson, Francis L. Sullivan and Findlay Currie as Magwitch. David Lean(Sir) and Ronald Neames'(CBE) adaption for the screen of this Dickens classic and directed by Lean himself. Still the best by far of the versions

Agree it is by far the best I've seen but there must be 20 versions or something close. The Muppets should do one.

Anyway just watched 'Prometheus'. Part of my policy is to avoid buying more DVDs and just wait for films to come on TV. So I'm 2 years behind.

This is set in the Alien universe - and who doesn't like the Alien universe? But is only tenuously connected to the other films. Not bad, some good twists and turns and Charlize whatshername is hot doing a sort of 'Seven Of Nine' bit. There is something about a woman armed with a flamethrower...not sure what it is.

Just finished watching this fabulous film. One of the best war films I have seen, and a very touching finale. It WILL be entering my dvd collection when I can afford to buy it.
Clint made a few good films in his day both as an actor and as a director, but this is his finest work, and a superb acting by Bradley Cooper playing the lead role of Navy Seal sniper Chris Kyle

Tonight its Black Book (2006) originally titled Zwartboek directed by the acclaimed Paul Verhoeven who gave us the classic Robocop. Lots of x rated stuff in this. Set in Holland during WW2 during the Nazi occupation and revealing the work of collaborators and the resistance. Based on various true events and very enjoyable in a macabre way; especially the ending. Stars Carice van Houten, Sebastian Koch, Thom Hoffman, and Halina Reijn.

Yes the proper Total Recall is one of his too. You should watch Starship Troopers it is excellent and it has Denise Richards at the height of her powers.

It attracted some controversy since it depicts something of a 'fascist' future where it is insects verses man for survival in the galaxy. The book was essentially the war with Japan set in space, the film does depart from the book in some ways, but many critics complained that if it was satire it was not obvious satire.

Essentially in the future human society you can only vote and have children if you undertake military service for 5 years. On the grounds that 'something given has no value.' Another good one is: 'Violence is the ultimate authority from which all other authority descends,'

Anyway worth a watch, pref with the surround sound whacked up a bit. :)

Back to my roots now with "The Killers" (1946) directed by Robert Siodmak, who made a few of Burt Lancaster's films. Also stars Ava Gardner, William Conrad(of Cannon fame later in life), Albert Dekker and Edmund O'Brien. Has been remade a couple of times but this is probably the definative version, although I like the Lee Marvin one too.

Starship Troopers is based on a novel of the same name by Robert Heinlein, an author not noted for his left-wing politics - quite the opposite in fact!

Verhoeven has never been afraid of gratuitous nudity: however the communual shower scene in Starship Troopers is brief and not out of context.

His directorial track record is somewhat varied from the poor: 'Total Recall' (which is so far removed from the Philip K. Dick short story as to be ludicrous) and 'Robocop', to the quite good: 'Black Book'. However the bleaching of the heroine's pubic hair in the film, whilst quite probably true, is a gratuitous detail.

I'd say sometimes a diversion from the Phillip K Dick source material is a good thing if making a movie from a book, see Blade Runner and how different it woulds be if it was ACTUALLY about electric sheep.. :)

Agreed, the book is a difficult read and with, inter alia, the ersatz religion sub-theme, would have been near impossible to film. The paring down of the book for the screenplay turned a difficult book into a superb film.

And it is about androids: replicants built to be an affordable replacement as pets, as genuine real animals are scarce in Phillip K. Dick's post-holocaust world. Some of the replicants are human androids, so as the title of the book asks: "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?", since even their memories have to be invented for them when they are built. Which leads to the question: is Dekkard a specialised android? The director's cut version of the film suggest he is, however there is no such suggestion in the book.

In my opinion Phillip K. Dick was one of the 20th century's finest sci-fi writers. His writing style is difficult to read, but his ideas were novel, albeit strange, before their time and in many cases remarkably prescient. He wrote in the '50s at the height of the Cold War, so many of his ideas concern themselves with, and reflect, the paranoia of the times.

Some of his books have been made into successful films, such as 'Blade Runner'and 'Minority Report'. Some have been less successful in my opinion: 'Total Recall' and 'Paycheck'.

Monsters - Dark Continent (Blu Ray)

Confused . com. Sometime in the near future a satellite crashes to earth spreading infecting crap across the earth. South America and parts of the far East are infected and mankind is losing the battle against an alien eco system and its various sizes of life.

The first film was about a young couple crossing the IZ in South America and this film was widely hailed as being a major achievement as most of the non cg footage was shot live in a gonzo way.

Film two, this one is a lost confused puppy of a film, is it war against Monsters ? Or a film about America's war on Is or the like. It doesn't really work either way and frankly is a lost opportunity . If there is a third film I hope it finds away to be more focussed.

In away I feel like I just pissed £13 down the drain - sigh.

That's why I wait for them to come on the telly nowadays - too many modern films are a total waste of time. Thrillers that are not thrilling, comedies that are not funny, remakes that remake the original by leaving out all of the things that made it good.

Having said that I enjoyed the first 'Monsters' - it was cleverly done and even though you knew it ultimately was not going to go anywhere, you didn't really mind.

It's okay but I wouldn't go mad about it. As disaster films go it isn't a patch on The Poseidon Adventure. And the ending is a bit silly. They have months of notice but so many people leave it to the last minute to head out of town that the freeway gets blocked?

Its a film with depth, its about fear, anxiety, relationships, hope, courage and its portrayed in an intelligent way. No film is perfect but still its, imho, a much better film than Armageddon.

I agree the original Poseidon Adventure is a good film, but its predictable in places.

....I like Deep impact and agree its way superior to the Willis one. ...... so now The Ghost and Mrs Muir (1947) Gene Tierney and Rex Harrison star opposite each other with George Sanders as a kiddies book writer/ philanderer. Joseph L. Mankiewicz directs this fab film. It has a hauntingly beautiful score as well.

'Stand Up Guys'

Al Pacino, Christopher Walken and Alan Arkin are ageing mobsters approaching the end of the line. Sounds like it should be a classic - a sort of geriatric 'Mean Streets' - but ends up as less than the sum of its parts. A buddy movie like this really needs some great dialogue from a Mamet or a Tarantino but it isn't on offer and the film can't decide if it is a comedy or a serious character piece. The glossy production kills the mood, as does the upbeat and intrusive soundtrack. Watchable for the performances, which are excellent, but that's about it. A massive lost opportunity.

Marco
12-09-2015, 11:20
Yes, there's got to be a decent story, too. It's not so much the gore I like, but the psychologically disturbing parts of the story that are responsible for creating it. Essentially, it's how sometimes innocuous everyday situations are portrayed in a deeply macabre/nightmare-inducing way - and I love that.

For example, next time I'm alone on an underground train at night (if it ever happens), I'll be thinking about 'The Midnight Meat Train'.... *That* is the scary bit. The gore itself, for me (as it's not real), is just pure comedy.

Why is it a must see?
Because it's the best thriller I have seen in years, no gore and guts just a realistic drama that seriously freaks you out.
It's an original idea not a poor copy of a foreign film or worse,a good 3 day book made into a one hour movie, it's also not a sequel and the actors aren't predictable Hollywood elites whose faces we all know making the whole thing seem fresh and more real.

They use a 1970s tank in 'A Bridge Too Far' - it jars but it doesn't spoil the film. It was much harder to resource the authentic item back then. Plus it is not exactly the worst historical error in the film. If you want to get picky ;)

Contextual accuracy and continuity are critical. I pick up on all the mistakes relating to machines. Planes, bikes and cars, etc. Many US movies featured Japanese two stroke bikes and of course the yanks always played a recording of a big four stroke Harley on the soundtrack. What crap!

Planes too. On occasion you see a plane taking off in a film and you (or at least I) know that it's a piston engined job and you hear a gas turbine sound. Again, crap!

Recent Kia car commercials have had a car zooming about to the soundtrack of a beefy V6 engine and I know for a fact the thing has a piddly little four cylinder motor.

Yes. I am pickier than most! And probably a bit more technically minded with machinery.

This is a classic example of the late Alexander Pope's observation that 'Where ignorance is bliss, 'tis folly to be wise'. I have zero knowledge of such technical gibbons, so incongruities such as those you describe don't bother in the slightest. Ironically, I rarely watch war films.

If the acting and direction are good enough, I can suspend disbelief quite easily, so even if I'm intellectually aware of a historical inaccuracy, that doesn't spoil my enjoyment, whereas ham acting or clunky direction certainly would.

...NOW, "Kind Hearts and Coronets" from 1949... Alec Guinness, Joan Greenwood and Dennis Price star in one of the great films of our time. Guinness plays multiple members of the aristocratic D'ascoyne family all targets of Price's rage. All superbly done and in the scene where six members of the D'Ascoyne family, all played by Alec Guinness, are seen together, it took two days to film. The camera was set on a specially built platform to minimize movement. In addition, the camera operator Jeff Seaholme spent the night with the camera to ensure that nothing moved it by accident. A frame with six black matte painted optical flat glass windows was set in front of the camera and the windows opened one at a time so each of the characters could be filmed in turn. The film was then wound back for the next character. Most of the time was spent waiting for Guinness to be made up as the next character.

Alec nearly drowned as the ship sank as he was held down with wires and they forgot.lol

'We Were Soldiers' - an account of the battle of La Drang, Vietnam, 1965. Mel Gibson gives a good performance as Col Hal Moore and the battle scenes are also convincing (apart from at the very end). Surprisingly for an American film it is historically accurate, although it only recounts the first two days of the battle and so omits the disaster that happened later when a US battalion on the march blundered into an NVA (no, not that NVA ;)) main force and took a pasting.

Very watchable film and the sub plot involving the wives having to deliver telegrams to the families of those killed is a poignant counterpoint to the heroics of the battle.

'Uncle Buck'

The great John Candy in the titular role as an irresponsible black sheep enlisted in desperation to babysit his brothers kids. From 1989 but it has aged pretty well. I like this film because I am the 'Uncle Buck' in my family. I also have a nephew who is the spit of Macauly Culkin. Scary.

Couldn't be more different but still live both of them. My wife and I always watch The West Wing between September and Christmas as a kind of ritual thing (and because there are so many episodes it takes that long!)

The Martian

Well, very good, pretty accurate from the science point of view, dramatic, moving at times and a pretty good reworking of the book and yet..... it lacked ..... something  I think because it is so long, as a film, that the dramatic becomes hum drum and so there is a loss of impact. I also didn't get the, what would have been justifiable frustration, in not being able to explore that the film's circumstances created.

I also couldn't help but wonder if Andy Weir - the author - or the film makers, if they had know that Mars has water seeping to the surface at times (recent discovery) could have worked that in to add to the story.

Overall a good film that needs a bit of editing - if there is a longer version lurking out there, frankly that would be too much.

Flawed yet wonderful.
Directed by Brad Bird of Iron Giant and Incredibles fame, its an "ideas movie" hidden in a visual blockbuster.
Speculative fiction, in the best tradition of Asimov, Ellison, Bova, Silverberg etc..
But done in an approachable way.

To call it charming would be a disservice, its a whole lot more than that.
Well worth a couple of hours of your time, it made the little boy in me grin a lot more than I'd admit. :)

The Wrong Arm of the Law (1963) starring Peter Sellers as "Pearly Gates". a gang of criminals from Australia led by Jack Coombes (Bill Kerr) impersonate policemen to carry out robberies. Local gang leader "Pearly" Gates (Sellers), who operates from the cover of a French couturier, finds his takings cut severely, and blames rival crook "Nervous" O'Toole (Bernard Cribbins). When it emerges that they are both being scammed by the same gang, they join forces, along with Lionel Jeffries' Police Inspector "Nosey" Parker, to bring the so-called "I.P.O. mob" (I.P.O. - Impersonating a Police Officer) to justice.

Alfie (1966). Lewis Gilbert's fabulous take on a womaniser, starring Michael Caine, Shelley Winters, Millicent Martin, Jane Asher, Shirley Ann Field, Elenor Bron and Denholm Elliot. It was remade quite successfully with Jude Law in the starring role, but this, to me is far superior thanks to the natural cockney style of "my name is Michael Caine".
Great score too, by Sonny Rollins, with the Bacharach/David hit, "whats it all about" sung her by our Cilla. the US release had the Cher version(peasants);)

'Cradle to Grave' - based on Danny Baker's autobiography this has been a really good series - shows the BBC can still do quality stuff when they really try...

Unlike 'Harvest 2015'. You have to presume they were stuck for something to fill this slot what with people getting bored with Bill Oddie and jackdaws eating their young.

Apparantly their choice was either this or 'Paint Drying 2015'.

Farming may be an interesting subject, I don't know. But watching people get over-excited about the news that Bill in Norfolk has had a bumper barley harvest? No.

Finally, 'The Apprentice'. I wouldn't normally touch a reality show with a bargepole but I always watch this, even though it is the same every year. There is something about business that really brings out the worst in people.

The ITV multi series if Sherlock Holmes. All 41 episodes I think. Just watched scandal in bohemia. Started in 1984 and ended in 1994 when Brett was seriously ill with bi polar and an enlarged heart of which in fact killed him the next year.

Rich you have to tell us what the name of the film is, otherwise it is a bit of a guessing game ;)

I've been watching 'JFK-A New Perspective'. Very long 4 part documentary on PBS America. Great footage, a lot of it obscure, and an intelligent commentary too. Refreshing to watch something that is not dumbed down or padded out. I never knew but apparantly he had Addison's Disease so had to take steroids, which were destroying his spine. So he was in constant pain and had to be shot up with painkillers and amphetemines several times a day.

Also he did a secret deal with Kruschev over the Cuban Missile Crisis. He agreed to withdraw US nukes from Turkey if K stopped his plan to base nukes in Cuba.. Part of the deal was K would keep his mouth shut about it so it looked like JFK had gone 'eyeball to eyeball' and won. K complied and JFK acheived god-like status as a consequence.

'White heat' with Jimmy Cagney. They knew how to pace a film in those days. And Cagney knew how to play bad guy without acting all 'evil'. Some great dialogue:

'Would you shoot me in cold blood?'

'Nah, I'll let you warm up a bit first'

Eventually Cagney does shoot him, repeatedly, whilst eating a chicken drumstick. They don't make 'em like this anymore.

Paint your Wagon (1969) starring Lee Marvin and Clint Eastwood. Marvin got a cool million to do this plus a cut which stopped him being in the Wild Bunch. He drank alcohol all through the shoot much to the annoyance of director Joshua Logan, and was permanently drunk during the shoot. Marvin was a bit of a smart alec and unprofessional in many films and nearly got beaten to a pulp by Burt Lancaster on the set of The Professionals a few years earlier for being drunk all the time. Burt was a dangerous and strong guy and would have eaten Marvin alive lol
just got a copy the other day so time to watch it. Not everyone's cup of tea but I have fond memories of watching this when it came out and on the old video tape I once had. This is a very good musical, and one of the last true Hollywood style extravaganzas. Of course it was a big flop, and cost way more than it should have, but its enjoyable all the same, not least for Marvin's no 1 hit Wanderin' Star and the fine singing voice of Eastwood in the likes of Elisa. The Nitty Gritty Dirt Band do Hand me down that can o' beans as well, and all have roles in the film.

The Way Ahead directed by Carol Reed and stars David Niven and Stanley Holloway.Made in 1944 and had originally be made as an army training film the year before, that got shelved due to the image it portrayed at the time. Niven was brought in as was Reed and a film was born... Originally released on D-Day. Written by Peter Ustinov, who has a small role as a cafe owner. Top quality stuff.

PAUL (2011) Starring Simon Pegg, Nick Frost & Seth Rogen as the Alien. Best small performance goes to Jeffrey Tambor for his portrayal of author Adam Shadowchild. He's a scream.
Not everyone's cup of tea this but I find it remarkably good and am happy to ignore its bad points as the good one well outweigh them.

finish the night with the 1952 classic ww2 naval drama, "The Cruel Sea" Jack Hawkins, Denholm Elliot, Donald Sindon and Stanley Baker in the main roles and Virginia McKenna is the love interest. Superior film this, directed by Charles Frend from a story by Nicholas Monsarrat... an excellent book I have on my Kindle

Jeeves and Wooster from way back in 1990-ish. has it really been that long?

The superb Stephen Fry and Hugh Laurie star in this 4 series boxset which is one of my favorites, although series 4 is a little lower in quality tbf. 20's/30's life for the wealthy was, lets face it, rather good.:eyebrows: The title music is superb too

Just watching 'The Civil War' - Ken Burn's incredibly long and detailed history of the American Civil War. On PBS America.

Absolutely the best docu ever imo. I have it myself. considering it is all old pics and voiceover it is absolutely amazing. I have a few of KB's sets and this is still the best

Just had a look. The other two I have is America and the West

Excellent! I have that boxed set and for me Fry and Laurie are Jeeves and Wooster, they have made those characters their own; much in the same way David Suchet has made the role of Poirot his own.

Also agree regarding your disappointment with the Series 4 episodes, where they are relocated to America. I found the storylines contrived and the 'difficult' return to the UK for the two main characters, unbelievable!

I read that all the episodes were based on the books and the reason they stopped making them was because they ran out of material and old PG wasn't around to write any more.

In fairness some suspension of disbelief is required, it is only high farce after all.

J&W is excellent. I agree, the american ones are tedious to watch, we normally skip those. The sound on those aren't as good either.

Frankenstein Chronicles - ITV Encore

Excellent Gothic tale, based around, the investigation of grave robbing, child trafficking, murder and secret medical experiments. A child's body is washed up, but the body is an amalgam of the bodies of numerous children. A river policeman John Marlott, haunted by the death of his wife and child, investigates the possibility that Mary Shelley's book Frankenstein might be the influence for the nature of the body.

Well executed drama, that lifts the fairly murky veil on society at the time, including the very dark and nasty means by which medicine and science was pursued by some.

Haunting and atmospheric.

Bit of a Netflix marathon of late... (as you do)

Watched House Of Cards with Kevin Spacey.
American remake of the British original series. Set in American politics obviously, but for those that remember the original, Spacey is equally Machiavellian as Ian Richardson.
Interestingly, the two original writers of the British series were Executive Producers and writers on the US Show.
Well worth a watch, bloody great TV.

Also,
Jessica Jones on Netflix.

New Marvel series, apparently opening up a new branch in the Marvel franchise.
Its good TV, well done just like Daredevil. (Another strong reccy)
Well worth a watch if you have Netflix.

Tonight's film of the night is "Hobson's Choice" (1954) starring John Mills, Brenda De-Banzie and the great Charles Laughton. Directed by God himself; aka David Lean, and along with me, it was Mills favourite film. He was a late choice apparently for the role too, and initially Robert Donat was earmarked for the part....how wrong would that have been?

Yes it is good but not sure if I would call it a masterpiece. Outlaw Josie Wales, now that is his masterpiece. I think his more recent work plays a bit too much to the gallery cf: Million Dollar Baby for which he is still 'Unforgiven' in my book, ho ho

Tonight its a conspiracy(fortunately averted)..Capricorn One from 1977 starring Barbra Streisand's 2 husbands; although not at same time ;) Elliott Gould and James Brolin, with Telly Savalas and Karen Black. A very good cast, and a strong storyline made this one of the best of the year and still holds its own today. My dvd copy says uncensored on it for some unknown reason... I wasn't aware it ever was, so may be trying to sell it lol

Tonight I've gone western/ civil war with "The Outlaw Josey Wales" from 1976 I think.... Starring Clint Eastwood(who also directed, Chief Dan George, who stole the film, Will Sampson and Sondra Locke. Not much you can say about a nigh on masterpiece of understatement. Originally a book by Forrest Carter, which is available on kindle, but maybe not under this name. Decent book but this was well directed by Eastwood( who took over from P Kaufman and caused a fair bit of trouble). Native americans were well and properly represented in this and it is one of Eastwoods traits to do this.
