Re Fonda. It was interesting to see how different he looks now. Must have had his nose done after that film. Initially I didnt recognise him till he spoke

Well I have had enough of that....its well done in general but tbh there is no one in it that you can like ; its just a series of maladjusted people being meaner that the next....pass.
So, now watching His girl Friday (1940) starring Cary Grant, Rosalind Russell And Ralph Bellamy. Stonkingly good, well acted and written comedy/drama. Directed by Howard hawkes, and free on my Amazon Prime.

Recently released biographic. Very enjoyable even if you're not a fan of the man or his music. Took me back to 91 when Nirvana played the Newcastle Mayfair club. Kurt didn't have any prentention about him then, he sat on an equipment case at the side of the stage smoking away whilst the support bands played and was largely left alone by the fans who all knew he was a wasn't an outgoing sort. Looking back on it I don't think even saw what was coming in terms of godlike status he attained even before his death.
Here's the gig... I was down the front and had to duck some flying guitars at the end. Not easy given I've always been a tall chap.

Now watching "The Fugitive"(1993) starring Harrison Ford and Tommy Lee Jones. Directed by Andrew Davis who did Under Siege the year before. Part of my Amazon Prime stream.

now "the four feathers" (1939) starring John Clements and Ralph Richardson. Imo the best of the versions, film wise, although it never really followed the book at all(they never do)....although I will forgive, as , although the book is one of my favs, it, in its form, wouldn't make an enjoyable film

Steven Soderbergh's version of Stanislaw Lem's haunting, moving and very weird story of an encounter with a truly alien intelligence that seems to be trying to understand humanity by manifesting the dead loved ones of the research station, in orbit round the planet Solaris, crew.
I am probably one of the few that prefer this version to the Russian film, in that its a more minimal stripped down examination of the horror and mystery of encountering a loved one who has died, and then been recreated, but for what purpose ? The film also deals in part with the pain of loss and trying to understand death by suicide.
There are a lot of questions left unanswered by this film but I guess any encounter with a totally alien personality would leave one perplexed.

I have both versions. Each examines different aspects of the novel but of the two, my preference is for the Tarkovsky version; it's simply more beautiful to look at.

I thought you might Barry. I think the Russian film brings out more of the elements surrounding the nature of the intelligence but I remember the film as being slightly sterile and matter of fact. I have both on DVD too, so I should probably watch it again as its been many years since I saw it originally on a BBC 2 Sci Fi season.

Watched Pulp Fiction last night on bluray...quite enjoyed it and it was very funny but ...where was the plot..acting was top notch but cant see myself wanting to watch all 2 hours 40 minutes again.
Caught up with S5 of Game of Thrones...excellent as always, no dip in quality.

Porridge (1979) Norman Stanley Fletcher played by Ronnie Barker has to orginise a football match. Richard Beckinsale died just before the film was finished alas, and a superb talent was lost to us.
The film was shot at HMP Chelmsford before it was returned to service after a fire. The film company admin offices were located in the prison hospital block.

Gangster (2011) sometimes known as Citizen Gangster stars Scott Speedman, Kelly Reilly, Brian Cox and Kevin Durand. Based around the exploits of the Boyd gang after ww2
"The Wackiest Ship in the Army (1960) starring Jack Lemmon and Ricky Nelson.
The movie is loosely based upon an actual commissioned Navy ship, the USS Echo (IX-95). As in the movie, the Echo was a scow loaned to the Navy from New Zealand in 1942, but was used for carrying cargo and supplies to Army bases in the South Pacific, earning her an Army commendation. She was decommissioned in 1944 and can be seen in Picton New Zealand as a museum.
As Lemmon and Nelson are training the crew in how to unfurl the mainsail, you can see the stern of the USS Fletcher in the background. The Fletcher earned 15 battle stars in WWII and Korea. She was one of the most decorated destroyers to serve in the South Pacific. She was scrapped in 1972.
The song that is played at the beginning of the movie is a comedy song named "The Walloping Window Blind' a.k.a."Blow Ye Winds Hi Ho". It was originally a poem by Charles Edward Carryl.
Hobson's Choice (1954) Charles Laughton and John Mills star in one of the best films ever made.IMO
Fantastic entertainment that Great acting from all including John Lawrie, Brenda de Banzie, Richard Wattis and a young Prunella Scales.
Alexander Korda suggested to David Lean he make a adaptation of the stage play of this, which was a superb idea. Jack Hildyard did the cinematography and later also did Casino Royale and Bridge on the river kwai

The film works with the material in the book but turns what Keel reported as fact into something else but the essence of the story is retained and it is still a very disturbing one.
In recent years some UFO researchers have poked John's work and in particular some aspects of the material he reported. However the guts of it remain and sadly JK can't refute some of what has been said as be passed away a few years ago.
Worth a watch.

I read it and took the books content as a reporting of experience and hard facts. The silver Bridge collapsed and after it collapsed my understanding is the weirdness in point pleasant stopped. The bridge collapsed for structural issues nothing weird, so maybe coincidence, that all the other weirdness was going on at the same time.
Some have questioned some of what John Keel wrote but he isn't about to defend himself and I don't know enough about the issues to mount a defence or criticism. If even a small percentage of what is in the book happened, then our reality is not quiet what it appears to be.
Anyway it is a scary story.

I've just watched 'Soldiers Of Fortune'. Sean Bean, Colm Meany, you'd think it might be pretty good. But after an utterly preposterous opening 10 minutes the plot gets explained and it is even more ridiculous than you could ever expect. No-one could possibly have read the script and thought anything other than 'this is complete and utter shite.' But it got made anyway. How does that happen?
Colm Meany is the bad guy - he always makes me laugh in films like this - I mean he is a good actor and has done some good stuff over the years but I guess he does this sort of thing to pay the rent. I am sure he has a little switch on the back of his neck so you can swap between 'good Colm Meany' and 'evil Colm Meany' and the director just sets it how he wants it before they start filming.

I don't have any problem with subtitles. I find I forget that I am reading them after a bit and just assume I can understand French (or Japanese or whatever).
It's tedious 'art house' shite that I can't stand; whatever the country of origin.
I'll keep an eye out for it. :)

That and the original Twilight Zones are some of the best TV sci-fi made (according to me). Both feature Star Trek cast before the series was made, and the influence on Star Trek is easy to see.

Currently working my way through the original Outer Limits seasons 1 & 2 on DVD. Some great episodes, some completely duff ones.
That and the original Twilight Zones are some of the best TV sci-fi made (according to me). Both feature Star Trek cast before the series was made, and the influence on Star Trek is easy to see.
Love the Outer Limits, some wonderful stories.

Monsters is very good film, a lot managed on modest money. The second film has only just recently come out in the cinema.

Paths of Glory
Kirk Douglas as a French army officer putting his neck on the line with unhinged Superior officer.
Directed by Stanley Kubrik it's a masterpiece and one of the best (imo) films about War ever made.
Absolute classic.

Just watched a documentery on PBS about Islamic State (ISIS or ISIL). They might be stone cold killers but you have to have a grudging admiration for what they have accomplished.
Blood on the Sun (1945) starring James Cagney and Sylvyia Syndey. Cagney as an American reporter in Japan pre war trying to expose their plans for world domonation.
James Cagney trained intensively in the martial-art of judo in preparation for his role in this movie. Cagney trained under Ken Kuniyuki who was a 5th Degree Judo Master. Cagney went on to insist he perform his own stunts in this movie. He said in his memoirs: "I grew so fond of judo I used it to keep in shape until a back injury I picked up doing something else, put me on the sidelines." Moreover, another instructor for Cagney was former LAPD policeman John Halloran who plays the role of Captain Oshima in the film and can be seen in the movie's closing fight sequence. Apparently, Halloran quit the police force after FBI agents investigated him because he was an expert in judo.

Sitting down tonight to "Chappie", Nial Blomkamps scifi film about artificial intelligence, yet again (groan) set in the slums of South Africa.
Film looks good mind...double feature of that and "Ex Machina", a similarly themed movie but a bit more cerebral I think.

Bit of a marathon last night actually.
Ex Machina was excellent, directoral debut of Alex Garland, more known as a screenwriter who wrote Sunshine, Dredd, 28 Days Later and the novel the Beach.
Chappie...was ok.
More of an effects showreel with a heavy handed blunt message, had the feeling aid seen this movie before in Elysium and District 9. He doesn't do subtle...hope Alien 5 is better.
District 9 was a classic though. Should have left the "social inequality in South Africa" theme there.
Finally fired up "True Detective" with Matthew McConachey and Woody Harrelson.
Watched first two episodes, intriguing story one of those ones that slowly peels back the layers of the onion and takes you to unexpected places...
Great acting and sense of place...feels real.
Two episodes in watching more tonight.

Chuck Bronson first met David McCallum's wife, Jill Ireland on the set and famously joked that he would steal her away...in fact he did just that, although it took 4 years ....Bronson had been a coal miner and offered some technical help in the tunnelling etc. He also WAS claustrophobic, just like his character ---

A Thousand Heroes - True Movies (now)
The incredible story of United Airlines flight 232 from Denver to Chicago. The DC-10 crashed during an emergency landing at Sioux City Gateway Airport on July 19, 1989, with a 184 survivors. The film draws together all the elements that made this possible from the incredible skill of the pilot and air crew to the rescue teams at Sioux City airport who had trained for such an eventuality.
Heart wrenching, moving and uplifting at the same time, as it depicts humanity at its best.
The film has an excellent cast including Charlton Heston, James Coburn, and Richard Thomas. A tight budget means some of the sets are poor and the crash isn't as well realised as it could be but still the film works.
Seen it quiet a few times and its a good film.

The film is partly based on the German refugee author Hans Habe's autobiographical Ob Tausend fallen (A Thousand Shall Fall) from 1941, about his war experiences fighting in the French Foreign Legion against his former homeland in 1940, being captured and then escaping the German prison camp.

Gamorrah (2014) series 1 . Set in Naples, focusing on organised crime and the relationships of gangsters, drug dealers, and ordinary people. It offers a different style of mafia portrayal from previous series such as The Sopranos. Originally Italian so it is subtitled. We shall see :)

Inside Jaguar - Making a Million Pound Car. (CH4 now)
Very interesting program exploring Jaguar's Lightweight project to make 6 fully hand made 1963 E Types. Now this is high end and the details are every thing. Many high end audio companies who offer A 4 instruction sheets, photocopied and plastic remotes etc on crazy priced gear could learn much from watching this program.
Didnt fancy Mothman so it went off rapidly. ...now watching Blackadder series 2....The late Ronald Lacey as The Bishop of Bath and Wells as fantastically black :eyebrows: One of the great episodes in tv history imo.

Season 5 of Game of Thrones Episode "Hardhome"
This weeks episode is a belter of a one. The threat from the North finally revealed, with the first White Walker attack shown, about 30 mins worth of epic battle and slaughter.
Best episode of the whole series so far and as good as anything in the Lord of the Rings films, infact better imho and horrible. It will take the combined armies of the entire kingdoms to stop the White Walkers and even then without suitable magic I think they are snookered.
Took awhile for me to get hooked but after last night I am in it now for the duration.

I am not big into fantasy either. I was when I was younger but most thats about now is very derivitive of what came before. I was resistant to GOT but last nights episode hooked me.

IMO the best version of THHGTTG was the original radio series, and that also used the 'Voyage of the Sorcerer' as the theme music. ;)

Well, I actually quite enjoyed that. yes it was predictable in making out that the Romans were terrible people and everyone else was in varying degrees, abused by them but got the last laugh srt of thing but it was well made; special effects well done and did not overwhelm the film and acting was reasonable too. 8/10(modern film rating) and would watch again. Recommended !!
Escape Plan (2013).. Has a star studded cast including Sylvester Stallone, Arnold Schwarzenegger, 50 Cent, Sam Neill, Vincent D'Onofrio, Vinnie Jones, Faran Tahir, Jim Caviezel and Amy Rayn .......Directed by Mikael Håfström, who I must say I've not heard of, this is a superb story/action film. You of course will need to like Sly and Arnie to enjoy I'd say but fortunately I do. Both in their 60's and still fit and able, this fairly rattles along, and is a popcorn and beer, sitdown, put out the lights and forget your troubles film. Highly recommended.

Thats it finished. been a marathon over last month or so and worthy of more interest than has been shown to it. Very moving. I wanted to see it again so managed to buy the thing. costs a fortune compared to the first series but worth every penny. Everyone should watch this at least twice.

No Need to say much except this is a terrific waltz through the great west with Sergio at his Ford best. Eastwood cemented his name in film history too, and thoroughly enjoyed all his work with the master director. Morricone's soundtrack is awesome....guess there was a need:eyebrows:

The scene where Sparrow is hurled across a canyon and landing on his feet while tied to a pole, is amazingly not using CG nor any other sort of camera trickery, not even wires. A man was actually tied hands and feet to a pole and then, by the use of specially created rigs (along with a dose of scientific pre-calculations for acceleration, distance etc), physically catapulted over that junction, doing a somersault mid-ways in the air and landing perfect on his two feet - all in one take!

My favourite bit of that film is where Tuco meets his priest brother. They cut the scene out sometimes when it is shown on TV. Can't recall the exact dialogue but Tuco says something like 'where we grew up there was only two ways out: Priest or Bandit. My way was harder!'

Watched a weird early 70s SciFi film earlier today, one of Peter Fonda's very early directorial efforts. Low budget but quiet well done within the restrictions of said budget but there is no joy in this film, it is a grey cloudy day and the end is a real shocker.
Its called the Idaho Transfer and is about time travel into the near future to escape a world wide disaster, the nature of which is never revealed. The research project is to be terminated but a small group of twenty something's (only the young can take the transfer process) try to survive within this bleak, cold alien future.
Interesting film and worth a watch.

Arlington Road is a favourite of mine, with Jeff Bridges and Tim Robbins absolutely convincing. Nice brooding sense of doom about this film. Poor old Bridges, starting off badly and having his world turned upside down, with things getting catastrophically worse and leading to total, spectacular disaster at the end. Wow! Great stuff!
Robbins was also great in the tragic horror movie 'Jacob's Ladder'. That ends badly too!

People are seeing wave effects, dear, logs, sturgeon but not a cryptid. Loch Ness is a desert re life i.e not enough food to support much. There are very large eels in the loch but nothing that big. So Loch Ness cryptid ? in my view nope. Stuff in the oceans thats more plausible.
I occasionally watch those types of programs but more often than not its an exercise in spinning paper thin info and more often than not its, we don't A have any proof or B simply don't know. We are asking the question.

.......currently watching "Very Important Person" with James Robertson Justice, Leslie Philips and the hilarious Stanley Baxter(playing 2 roles). Justice, who was fluent in German, pulled a fast one, and improvised by swearing in German and it got passed the censors and director who both obviously didn't :eyebrows:
Watched 6 episodes of 'Wayward Pines' last night (& this morning) & just watched episode 7 recorded from Fox. The plot has more holes then Swiss Cheese but it's all very enjoyable hokum :)
Re-found my complete set of voyager disc sets. Whoopee. Will maybe give them a spin this week

You should! Buy a copy of Radio Times to see what is on. Tonight, for example, there was an eye-opening programme about the drummer Ginger Baker. And BBC4 often makes Friday the day for interesting music programmes. At the moment they are examining the origins of 'rock 'n roll'. Fascinating stuff!

just finish watching the 1954 ensemble film of the Priestly play "An Inspector Calls" . Cast members get pretty much equal time and billing, the best known being Bryan Forbes and Alistair Sim.
It is a superb film and the play and script has been held up as a masterpiece and is oft studied..It first went on stage in Russia in 1945 of all places.

I don't like Adam Sandler. He can only play one character. His first couple of movies were OK but after that... You've seen one, you've seen them all I'm afraid. :(
Have to agree bernie. Not my cup of coffee but this is to me a super film and he played the role well. He had a great support cast mind and an excellent script

Currently Cornelius Ryan's film adaptation of The Longest Day (1962). Pretty much everyone is in this Blockbuster set around the D-Day landings in Normandy in 1944. Ike supposedly walked out on his screening complaining bitterly about the film's total inaccuracy. That aside, and after all it is supposed to be a film, and not a docu drama, it works quite well imo.Ike always was a drama queen ;)

Pretty good, written and created by the Wachowski's and J. Michael Straczynski, who was responsible for Babylon 5.
Intriguing how the various threads are laid out, its an enjoyable watch.

Saw it at the cinema. It's a good film but I have a few criticisms: Turing did not solely invent the 'Bombe' or have much to do with Colossus: nor did he ever become engaged. But it does show Turing's guilt-free attitude to his homosexuality, and does suggest that his death by cyanide poisoning was probably an accident and not suicide brought about by the enforced chemical 'treatment' he was obliged to undertake as an alternative to going to prison.
I have just finished watching this extraordinary film.
Great idea and story.
Superb special effects.
Superb cinema-tography.
Verdict; one to look out for if you have not seen it.

Michael Powell's "The Spy in Black" (1939) starring Conrad Veidt, Valerie Hobson and Marius Goring. There is also an early uncreditted role for the, to be, "Sir" Bernard Miles.
Set in the Orkney Isles in 1917, a German Sub Captain is sent to get info to enable his Sub to sink the British Fleet. Excellent film , and was the first collaberation between Powell and Emeric Pressburger, who together made dozens more excellent films.

I taped this the other night and was a bit dissapointed that it turned out to be a 2012 remake and not the 1980s John Milius classic. With American forces over-stretched abroad the Russians and North Koreans invade continental USA - with a low altitude daylight parachute drop over an urban area...mmm, okay...not how I'd do it but hey it is the North Koreans.
Like many re-makes it is similar to the original, just not as good. Lots of fast cutting in the action scenes may make it easier to film but not easier to watch or follow what is happening. And not as outright silly as the original either, which has some moments of laugh-out -loud ridiculousness that made it worth watching.

He bought me the bluray boxset of pirate of the Caribbean so going to watch the first one now...Curse of the Black pearl. Saw them recently on Amazon and liked them so itll be fun to watch on this format

'Repo Girl' - in an alternate modern - day Earth a young heiress is disinherited due to her bad behaviour, so she seeks out work in the repo industry. Sounds like a typical fish out of water plot but it soon knocks that expectation on the head. A bit quirky but quite clever and funny in parts. Oh and Chicotay from Star Trek: Voyager is in it too. Worth a watch.
Fantabulosa (2006) Michael Sheen plays the irrepressible Kenneth Williams. Have seen this b4 but it was a while ago. if memory serves it was quite a sad life he had, like many comic genius's; must be in the genes, or in Kenny's out of them;) Michael Sheen is fantabidozi

yes saw the clough one and bits of Blair. He did a pretty good job with a very difficult subject in Kenny Williams, who was an extremely complex character ...some today may say he wad in fact mad.

The Yakuza 1974
Recorded this a few nights ago on TCM, not seen it in years, beautiful but violent film about an American ex service man who was stationed in Japan trying to help a friend sort out a problem with the Yakuza.
Along with Shogun, this was one of the films that fuelled my fascination with Japan.
Robert Mitchum is very good in this film.

Fabulous Hammer reworking of the BBC serial. Atmospheric and well paced - excellent. Despite its age the effects when on screen hold up well.

A rather good film that was. some of the dialogue was difficult to follow, and the switching times so often too, but overall I would watch it again and there are not so many films these days I say that about.... and Halle Berry is still rather nice, as is Doona Bae. Jim Broadbent was outstanding too

As a Jackal reader, its surprising Ive not watched that b4 It was quite well done in its way, but as a film it was way short of all his actions. Fairly portrayed and reasonably acurate in its self. Worth a watch if youve not seen it... it is free on amazon prime

The Wild Bunch - 1969 Western starring William Holden and Ernest Borgnine.
One of those films that you appreciate more the older you get. Especially since nowadays the slo-mo violence is nothing new and you can get beyond it and appreciate the characters and the story a bit more. A great Western, probably one of the best ever I think.

Fact based Korean war film featuring a reactivated WW2 pilot who isn't happy to have been dragged out of military retirement but does his duty anyway. Excellent carrier based war film, with quality acting and good action scenes.

Earlier, it was "Meet Dave" (2008) starring Eddie Murphy. Not a lot in this but some good warm-hearted points and the delectable Elizabeth Banks for company
Currently Doctor at Large ...again....love this film; the best of the bunch by far. Made in 1957 by Ralph Thomas who did among others a couple of Carry ons, although didnt get any cresits, and the Kenneth More version of John Buchan's 39 steps.
Stars a host of Brithish greats in Dirk Bogarde, Muriel Pavlow, Donald Sinden, Michael Medwin, and Lionel Jeffries. Best line of many was by Carol Richmond, who played Eva. when asked to take big breaths, she replied. "Yes, and I'm only 16";)
