NOW WATCHING THE HISTORY OF MR POLLY starring John Mills and one of my favourite actresses Megs Jenkins. Originally a novel by HG Wells and made in 1949. A delightful tale with Finlay Curie stealing the show as Uncle jim. This film was nearly mad earlier with Charles Laughton but was cancelled due the the outbreak of the 2nd ww.

I can remember reading the book at school. Though the film adaptaion decent enough, but didn't think it brought out the subleties of Polly's character.
It can be difficult in a short film, but it is still one of my favourites of type.
...gonna watch a couple of carry ons now to keep up my good mood :)

I've just reclaimed my copy of 'Two Days in The Valley' from a friend. Nice quirky and sometimes humorous, crime thriller with a mean edge. James Spader is in fine form here. May watch it again this weekend. Not seen it for ages.

Just about to watch the 2014 hit and 8th venture of Ape movies...."Dawn of the Planet of the Apes" (my sons copy) on Blu ray. Heavily applauded by the critics and public so must have something going for it and having already read the plot synopsis :doh: I have a good idea where its going.
Directed by Matt Reeves who also wrote it and is booked to do the next sequel in 2016. Starring Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Andy Serkis and Toby Kebbell, it has already grossed over 700 mil dollars. Filming began in April 2013 around the town of Campbell River, British Columbia. The location of Vancouver Island was chosen for its similarity to the locations depicted in the film, the forests, and the variety of landscapes. Filming in New Orleans started in May 2013 and continued in July 2013 at various locations such as the former Six Flags park Six Flags New Orleans.
Was quite good, although started a bit slowly, and lacked something.

I watched that first time round and recalled it being quite good but they repeated it a couple of years ago and I tried watching it again and it hasn't aged well. Bob's always good, though.

inclined to agree. it has aged and although Mitchum is a class act he was physically well past his prime. Still well done though but not a patch on the book.

The Cruel Sea (1953) - Film 4 +1
One of the finest maritime war films ever made, moving, haunting and a pretty accurate portrayal of life on the convoys in a Flower Class corvette. Based on Nicholas Monsarrat's book of the same title, with a screen play written by Eric Ambler (literary thriller writer) the film tells the story of the Compass Rose during her convoy runs and ultimate destruction by a torpedo. The film pulls no punches, though Amblers screen play omits some of the most horrible aspects of the original book. The fight for survival on the raft after the Compass Rose is sunk is particularly harrowing as one by one the survivors die, from exposure, and fatigue.as is the sound of men screaming from somewhere deep within the ship as she begins to sink.
During the filming, Jack Hawkins saved Donald Sinden life from drowning.
I have met men who served in the Merchant Navy and Navy, on the Atlantic and Russian convoys and my respect and admiration for what they did grows every time I watch films like this. On a personal note this was one of my Dads favourite films, so watching it is a reminder of his no longer being around.

yes Neil a superb film. an old friend of mine long dead was on the russian convoys and said it was much worse than you could imagine at times. he liked this one too.

A Night to Remember(digitally remastered)....it is very well done; contrasts are superb as is clarity. Another success from the ITV restoraton studios.

Just finished Life Story (Attenbourgh) which was very good, and now some real action with Mark Wahlberg as "SHOOTER". A rather god film this and very well portrayed by an underrated actor.

I know it got panned when it came out since everyone was hoping for more marines vs aliens shoot-outs and so forth but in this iteration the humans have no weapons, not even a jury-rigged flame-thrower. But the first film was a thriller, the second an action movie and this one is a gothic horror. And it does work since there are a lot of clever little touches in the way this film is directed and in the performances. The lack of any weapons or technology makes it one of the least 'sci-fi' science fiction films ever. And Brian Glover and Pete Poselthwaite are in it.

Loved the retro look to the set design, reminded me of Silent Running in a lot of ways.
Look out for his next picture after Moon "Source Code" which is also great.
His latest is in post production, a World of Warcraft movie.

Yesterdays Enterprise - STNG on the Sci fi Channel (now)
An accidental set of events throws the Enterprise C 22 years into the future, altering the time line. They meet the Enterprise D which is now embroiled in a war that should not have happened. The Enterprise C must go back but all will die if they do that. A fine episode of The Next Generation and along with The Inner Light http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Inner_Light_(Star_Trek:_The_Next_Generation) one of my favourite stories from that series.

That's the one where Tasha Yar coems back if I recall correctly. Yes not a bad one although given there are what 5 seasons with twenty-odd episodes each there are precious few good ones.

That's the one. The Enterprise C, answered a distress call from a Klingon outpost under Romulan attack, suffered severe damage and ended up 22 years in the future, where the Federation is at war with the Klingons, a war that would more than likely not have happened if the Enterprise C had made more of a difference in the past.
Wonderful story, good acting and its a shame Paramount did nothing with the characters from the Enterprise C, particularly Rachel Garrett, played by Tricia O'Neil

Tonight it will be "The Day After Tomorrow" (2004) directed by Roland Emmerich (Independence Day and The Patriot) and starring Dennis Quaid. Not liked by most, and although it came out just a few years after 9 11 New Yorkers loved the scenes of the "Big Apple" getting blitzed by tidal waves etc, much to the surprise of all concerned. In fact New Yorkers were about the only ones who loved the film .....oh and me :lol: .It's bunkum, but pretty good bunkum and although the science is not up to scratch, the action is.

Again a very good Ealing comedy. I can't remember when it was made, but the studio were flirting with ideas that could have caused difficulty with the film censor: the idea that the Joan Greenwood character is being encouraged by the mill owners to seduce/sleep with Alec Guinness, in order to get him to reveal the secret of his thread that will never wear out nor get dirty.

Good film that. WC was hilarious.... Chill Wills was in that too(he was a musician before he became an actor...ie, Chill Wills and His Avalon Boys) Not seen that in years.

4 that i can think of...original which has aged very well was 1939...a tv remake with Beau Bridges in 77. that new one in 2002 plus storm on the nile which used a lot of the footage from the original

................tonight its Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid Directed by Roy Hill in 1969. The film won four Academy Awards: Best Cinematography; Best Original Score for a Motion Picture; Best Music, Song (Raindrops Keep Fallin' on My Head); and Best Writing, Story and Screenplay Based on Material Not Previously Published or Produced. It was also nominated for Best Director, Best Picture, and Best Sound. This film inspired also the television series "Alias Smith and Jones", starring Pete Duel and Ben Murphy, which was one of my favourites.

Turn of the new millenium film "O Brother Where Art Thou" . A nice dose of Bluegrass music and early folk thrown in with great comic going on's make this one of my favourites. Watching the Blu ray edition

The Bourne Identity directed by Doug Liman( he was producer of the other 2 and this one I think) in 2002 and starring Matt Damon, the first in the trilogy . Brad Pitt was originally offered the role and must now be kicking himself.
Anyways, a good film, as are the other 2 ; decent action and storyline with good acting.

Yes, all three Bourne films were excellent. Superb pace, stories and acting. Matt Damon was perfectly cast and totally convincing.
No, I disagree. I can't take Matt Damon seriously in anything he has been in except the 'Ocean's' films, he's good in them. But as a hard man? Nah.

BBC Four Arena documentary on Frankie Howard. Really interesting and quite revealing. Max Bygraves mentions sharing digs with him and after doing a show they'd have something to eat and then Frankie would want to go out for a walk - which would be something like 12 at night and would head for the likes of a cemetery for peace and quiet to learn his lines.
Worth a look.

Last night: Gran Torino with Clint Eastwood. I've deliberately avoided this one until it came on telly so didn't know anything about the story and as it turns out the title is absolutely no clue. Good film.
Today - why it's Christmas Day, Sir. That means a Bond film in the afternoon is de rigour - can't decide whether to go for The Spy Who Loved Me or You Only Live Twice. Later will be the traditional Xmas screening of 'Zulu'.

Apart from all the various references which I loved, some genuinely funny, scary and uplifting (can I say that?) moments.
Great script, not too schmaltzy but funny, subtle, and you know what....even for this old cynic: Christmassy.

Best DW is a while, cracking telly.

The story of the Dunlops. I am not a massive sports fan of any type but living in Northern Ireland everyone knows the name Dunlop, Joey and Robert are legends of road motorcycle racing and Robert's sons William and Michael who have taken up the baton in recent years.
A story of triumph over disaster and how eventually ones luck and skill run out. Like the F1 film Rush this story illuminates the drive and passion of sports men who pushed the envelop of what was technically possible and what was humanly possible. Uplifting but also a sad story.

Predator 2 - Sky 1 HD
Much prefer this to the first film, even though in places its ridiculous what Danny Glover does physically.
Love the scene at the end where we see a trophy cabinet on board the Predator spaceship full of skulls and middle, pride of place a skull of an Alien.

My first time seeing this American War of Independence film, set in and around New Orleans. 1812 and the British are about to attack New Orleans, only the pirate Jean Lafitte and his fleet of pirate ships stands between the Americans success or defeat.
Ironically after being betrayed by the Americans, Lafitte and his men after being pardoned and released from jail supply Andrew Jackson's men and irregulars weapons, powder and flints to defeat the British on land not at sea.
Unusual seeing Yul Brenner with hair but he carries the role of Lafitte of well.

I love this film, the look of it, the action, the majesty. I know this didn't do that well at the cinema - understatement it bombed - but I think its a good re imagining of ERBs John Cater of Mars. Based on the Princess of Mars book it was hoped this might be the beginning of a series to rival Star Wars but it didn't happen. I really don't know why it has everything going for it and yet nope.
I loved Marvel comics comic adaptation, and discovered the books in my early teens, so I was delighted when this came out.
Anyway ERBs estate have taken the rights back and hope to revisit this, so there may be a second film.

I was going to watch a film but there's nothing on that grabs me so I'll be settling for a PBS documentary about the Atlantic Wall, washed down with a couple of cans of Guinness.

I love this film, the look of it, the action, the majesty. I know this didn't do that well at the cinema - understatement it bombed - but I think its a good re imagining of ERBs John Cater of Mars. Based on the Princess of Mars book it was hoped this might be the beginning of a series to rival Star Wars but it didn't happen. I really don't know why it has everything going for it and yet nope.
I loved Marvel comics comic adaptation, and discovered the books in my early teens, so I was delighted when this came out.
Anyway ERBs estate have taken the rights back and hope to revisit this, so there may be a second film.

One of my favourite shows of the 1980s, of course it doesn't matter how many channels you pay for they never repeat it so I bought the DVD (used since it is out of print) but turns out to be the 1997 version that got cancelled after one season. Oh well at least I have never seen these episodes but they are not as good as the old ones. Back to Amazon marketplace for me...

Thanks but that is the one I bought mistakenly thinking it was the 1980s series.
Done some further - ahem - investigation and it turns out that the 1984-86 series was never released on DVD. Not a problem I'll see if I can get the VHS - nope, never released on VHS either. WTF?
The only way to get to see this show again is to find someone who taped them back in the day and is willing to sell copies. I'm not happy.

Some Like It Hot. Earlier today I promised myself I would watch this again as a line came up in conversation so here goes. Still one of the great films of my time.
As always, thoroughly enjoyable film, topped by Joe E Brown's lovely performance as the ageing millionaire lothario. Joe was a wonderful character throughout his life, starting in vaudeville then becoming a pro baseball star, yet turning down a chance to play for the N Y Yankees to stay in entertainment. During the war he was the first to tour all the dangerous outposts to entertain troops out of his own pocket. A true gent and as class an act as there ever was.

Better than I had expected, another "adult teen" movie drawn from a series of books like Hunger Games, but I found this one better.
Interesting premise, well acted actually and enjoyable enough.

'The Place Beyond The Pines' - billed as an epic crime drama but in actuality it is very different to what you would expect from that description. Long. long film with a big, unexpected left turn half way through. Well worth a watch.
Unlike 'The Dark', a psychological horror film starring Sean Bean. He's always excellent, he just never gets really good parts in really good films. This reminded me a bit of 'Don't Look Now' only not anything like as accomplished, substituting standard 'make the audience jump' tactics for true, disturbing horror. I couldn't make it all the way through, it was just too formulaic.

Going to keep the comedy coming so next up is Very Important Person, starring J R Justice, the underrated Eric Sykes and the great Stanley Baxter. Directed by Ken Annakin in 1961, it was one of the last great British comedic films.

Good film. I've seen it loads of times.
I was watching 'The Chronicles of Riddick' again earlier (ITV4). Yes I know its 'escapist fantasy nonsense', but it's really well done and on a hugely grand scale. There are some very decent actors and acting and the plot is nicely elaborate. Vin Diesel is perfect as the droll and taciturn 'hero' and the CG stuff is spectacular and very well handled. The big twist at the end finishes the whole thing off nicely.
Good film that, reminded me of Dune in a lot of ways.

The missus watches them. Usually, it's a bloke standing in a muddy hole. What gets me, is they always say they've only got four days or whatever limited period, so they don't do the job properly. And they make lots of sweeping statements saying so and so happened here, when clearly they don't really have enough evidence. To many generalisations too.

The Battle of the Sexes starring Peter Sellers and Constance Cummings (1959). Directed by Charles Crichton, I recorded this the other day. Haven't seen it for years but it was a decent little film that also has Robert Morley to help it along.

It was the 'prequel' (as I'm sure you know) to The Chronicles of Riddick, which was on a far bigger scale, but the CGI is excellent in both.
I watched The Chronicles of Riddick again the other day on ITV4. Really enjoyable.

now watching "Sailor Beware" Peggy Mount at her most frightening as the battleaxe wife and future Mother-in-law....she'd put anyone off marriage :eyebrows:
also stars Shirley Eaton, Ronald lewis, Gordon Jackson and a young Michael Caine. Cannot remember the bridesmaid's name but she was a cracker :eyebrows:

A couple go scuba diving but when they surface the boat is gone, they are alone in the middle of the ocean, and things go rapidly downhill from there.
I think the lesson is never go scuba- diving ;) Good film though, I think it only cost them about £100K to make and grossed millions. Based on true story too, so don't say it could never happen...

Terence Edmond appears as Sgt Bacon who played the character PC Sweet in Z Cars in 1962 and famously was killed off.

Picked up a couple of old goodies in the charity shop today. 'Gunfight at The O.K. Corral' and 'The Sons of Katie Elder' on DVD. Only £1 each in mint condition. Classic western DVDs seem thin on the ground usually.

Last of the George Pollack Marple quartet I'm watching although technically it was the 3rd, Murder Most Foul (1964). Margaret Rutherford and the usuals are joined by Ron Moody, Megs Jenkins, James Bolam and Andrew Cruickshank (of Dr Findlay's casebook fame), and a cameo by Dennis Price.
Another Marple that was originally a Poirot novel, and set in a theatre with a cast rehearsing a play. Aptly then there are various references to the work of William Shakespeare: the title hails from "Hamlet" Act I, Scene V (lines 27-28) where the Ghost speaks: "Murder most foul, as in the best it is;/But this most foul, strange, and unnatural." A key phrase in the film hails from "Romeo and Juliet" ("What's in a name? That which we call a rose/By any other name would smell as sweet" (Act II, Scene II)). And Cosgood alludes to "Macbeth"'s line "Sleep that knits up the ravelled sleeve of care" (Act II, Scene II, lines 34-35).

Enjoyable what I saw of it. Based on a historical event (very loosely) but it was a male and his son kidnapped not a lady and there were no Germans, only French involved and no hostility between them.

Now, Red Dwarf Series 4.......nowt to beat the dwarfers of a Saturday night.
13 Rue Madelaine starring Jimmy Cagney. Excellent story of the sos ths and initially was to be based around the exploits on Col Donovan but he objected and it was redone and set around Peter J. Ortiz, another hero of ww2. Ortiz was an amazing character and served in the foreign legion before ending up back in the US and I think the Marines. Moved to sos and was infiltrated several times into France. Ortiz eventually became an actor( not a very good one and starred in a few John Ford films including Rio Grande with The Duke.
Jimmy Cagney was again in top form here and if you get the chance o a watch then this is ,although a pro US propaganda film it is still a tribute to all those brave men and women who in many cases sacrificed their life to defeat the evil Bosch.

Albert Finney as Poirot with a stellar cast in the film of the Agatha Christie novel.
The third man, Brideshead, Poirot and hancock are all my cup of tea.. Ddn't like 5th element, and not seen eyes wide shut. The Poirot version with Finney was excellent

Eyes Wide Shut - has its moments but ultimately it doesnt really go anywhere, marriage breakup, resisting temptation, giving in to it, secret society killing those that betray its secrets all in it but it just doesn't amount to much. Could have been very good and at times is visually very interesting. But overall Very disappointing film.

Now got on Ro Grande (1950) ...a John Ford western starring the ubiquitous John Wayne, Maureen O'hara, Victor McLaglen to mention a few. This was the first of 5 films Wayne and O'hara would make, and the screen debut for Wayne's son Patrick. Ford was forced to make this to get permission by the studio to make the quiet man, as they thought the quiet man would tank(it didn't; in fact I think it did better)
Needless to say McLaglen wiped the floor with everyone with his performance....AGAIN:)
The Password is Courage starring Dirk Bogarde and Alfred Lynch...an excellent PoW film this.

The Ice Age movies are great. In fact I am really into this animated movies: The Incredibles, Despicable Me, Finding Nemo, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs (what a title!), Shrek series. I started watching them when my kids were growing up and haven't stopped. They ALL have an adult level and the artwork is fabulous.

Despicable Me is very good! I like all the Ice Age series too.
Robert Wise's 1951 masterpiece, "The Day The earth Stood Still" starring Michael Rennie and the delectable Pat Neal, with Sam Jaffe as Prof Barnhardt. Klaatu corrects his sums on the chalkboard as would Oppenheimer , so a like there to the destroyer of worlds ;)
Making my way through Breaking Bad on Netflix.

Best movie I've seen in a good while, quite trippy, dealing with time, relativity and other abstract concepts in an entertaining way.
Ending was quite emotional too.

Far more entertaining than 'A Star On Earth' in which the faintly annoying Prof Brian Cox is supposed to be looking at nuclear fusion, which should be interesting. Regrettably, after some unnecessarily long and tedious primary school level exposition about how the sun works, he quickly moves straight onto the climate change bollocks, thus forcing me to switch off and once again seriously consider not paying the licence fee.

Dear God what horror. Footage recorded at Bergen Belsen by British army film crews, during the liberation and dealing with the aftermath. Interviews with soldiers who were there, those who survived.

I have never seen this footage before, taken from the 'German Concentration Camps' documentary. To see human beings, skeletons with flesh on them being dragged and dumped with no ceremony, like bags of refuse.
I can not imagine, what this must have been like, the images say much, but no smell, no sound. How did those who saw this not go mad, seeing such horrors and those who did this......... I just can not imagine such inhumanity, how did they do this.

Yes it showed that, SS officers and regulars moving the dead, frankly they deserved more honour and reverence in the doing of that, it wasn't given them. I know why, but I can't divorce my emotions from the need to protect the survivors from disease, by treating the dead like piles of rubbish.
Frankly Grant, I don't think the SS cared a jot.

Unstoppable - Channel 4 (Now)
Wonderful film, watching this though is tinged with sadness this was the last film my Dad and I watched together before he died :(
This was also Tony Scott's last directorial project before he died.

It was yesterday and I was going to put the monarchy in the rack and as I moved the table with the tv etc on to get to the back easier the back leg of 3 collapsed( must have not screwed it in enough I guess) :doh: . Damned thing went back and everything slid. I managed to save everything; dismantle and rebuild but have done myself some harm. along with the stairlift packing up I am bloody buggered and can hardly move.:lol: It s these things that bring home how difficult life can be, especially as I was always able to do anything.
Still, I saved my kit; I'd have been really pissed if I'd broken sommat.

I'm always injuring myself too. Gashes, bruises & falls (I'm a bit like a 'bull in a china shop'). I try not to let them slow me down.
