Any AOS'ers into watches?
I like a watch that ticks so I have a couple of quartz models and only one auto.
I'd be interested to see what other members have, I'd imagine the same discerning taste that draws people to good hifi and music might also result in a decent watch or two.
A Rolex Oyster given to me as a 21st birthday present by my parents. And a Bulova Accutron with a rectangular watch face and black leather strap, that I only wear with my DJ when the occasion arises.

Speedmaster. Coveted one for ages and got one as a wedding present. Worn it every day since.
A Longines, Omega, Maurice Lacroix, Seiko and a Swatch. I think I even have a Casio some place. :lol:

I don't believe in stupid expensive watches.
Own two decent watches. Basic pulsar Kinetic, which I've had since 2008. The other watch, is a cheap and cheerful Ben Sherman. Purchased from Argos in 2006.
Both still work fine.

I might say they all still work and keep pretty good time in general although are in need of a service. The Elgin B.W. Raymond Pocket Watch movement cost $35 in 1888 plus case of choice. a fair amount and a very nice big watch. My favorite, and I bought it from a US collector many years ago who was needing money to do up his oldsmobile classic car

I have a Rolex Submariner which I bought in 1970 for the princely sum of £84. I couldn't afford the model with date as that was £96. It now needs a full service which is likely to cost £500 or so. It now resides in my sock drawer.
I also have an Oris along similar lines to the Submariner but with a date. Around 6 months after I bought this it was running slow, so Oris rebuilt it and it now runs very well, losing just one second/day. A beautiful thing with a crystal back, so you can see the mech.

One Coach, one Michael Kors, one "everyday" Seiko, my grandfather's engraved watch that was presented to him to mark 45 years as a GWR engine driver and a crazy Tokyo Flash LED device that looks like a radiation detector and is damn near impossible to tell the time on!
I think I still have an original 1980s Swatch tucked away somewhere as well.

I've also got a Raketa Baltika Russian military watch from the 1950s, it needs cleaning but when it is running it has a beautifully soft tick and a Bulova Acutron Spaceview but I can't find that one either at the moment. I've got a Tag Heuer too, but I think it wears a little small on me so it doesn't get much wrist time. My everyday watch is an auto that I was able to choose the case, hands and dial for, and a colleague assembled it for me, I like it as I am unlikely to ever bump intro anyone wearing one the same.

Yep, that's the one, they are based on Swiss railway timekeeping clocks and watches, an excellent pedigree.

I used Swiss Time Services for my watch, was still dear though (impeccable work though), £500 for a full service & restoration of the case to original standard, which is as much as I paid for the watch!
I paid ~ £500 for a service of my Rolex about 12 years ago, but it was serviced by Rolex trained personnel. Even so, that was about 10x what was originally paid for the watch!

I'm afraid my former habit of swapping my Hifi has been put on the back burner since I became a bit of a watch freak!
I now have in my collection, an Omega Seamaster 300 quartz, a Breitling B1, a bi metal Rolex Daytona, a bi metal Rolex GMT 2, and an SS Rolex Submariner.
And down to the lower end with a Kahuna divers watch ( older Submariner look alike) and a watch sold under the brand Gigandet, which looks like a 1966 Paul Newman Daytona, but at a fraction of the price.

This one's about 13 years old, they do it in either silver, white or blue face, possibly black also. I was slightly frustrated to find that after its first year it was supposed to have a service, which took 2 months (!) but all fine other than that. The strap really gathers grime (must have a sweaty wrist) and needs a good toothbrushing once in a while.

Indeed, a simple timeless classic, worn by folk with class and sophistication, unlike the blinged-up to buggery variety, which are worn by pretentious idiots trying to make a 'statement' to others about themselves.

I never understood the watch thing. My father celebrated his divorce with gold Rolex, which wound up my mother. He has a solid gold Audemar but now wears an Apple Watch. I haven’t worn a watch for years. A friend has a collection of some 500 classic Tag Hauer watches, so I understand.

I have this Bulova from the 1940s. My dad had one very much like it that he won playing cards with his crewmates in Singapore after the Korean war ended. When he died I asked my stepmother if I could have it but it never came my way. The three watches that I still wear on a yearly basis are a Guess and two Citizen watches.
The middle one in the picture is the one I tend to wear most of the time these days. It doesn't require a battery change ever, and the time and date is automatically updated to wherever you are in the world, allegedly. I was getting fed up of the battery going dead every three years, and that I then ended up spending weeks before I finally got round to ordering a battery and fitting it myself. So that's why I bought this watch after shutting my eyes and handing over my card to pay for it.
The third one I bought in December 1999. I didn't want to use the same watch in the new millennium, which is why I bought it then.

One thing I didn't want is a bezel that doesn't move and has useless numbers on it, so I like this watch because it doesn't have that nonsense.

Rotary diver type...and an Accurist dual display...got the Rotary in a pawn shop for £17.50..as it neede a new crystal...the watch repair ctr in Newcastle put one in and pressure tested the watch for £30.00....and the Accurist was given to me by my future son in law....both keep excellent time....cheap n cheerful...look ok and tell the time....

I am keen on watches in the best sense because they are essential for work. The time must be on my wrist rather than on the phone in my pocket.
I go for just an analogue face with no other functions which I dont use anyway...an analogue date is just a pain to maintain so would have to be a digital inset....a diving dial on a home watch is laughable
A good Sekonda or Skagen is all thats needed. A watch as a status symbol only interests me to a point...maybe because I dont have £5000 I want to blow on a watch...and maybe because a cheaper watch tells me enough for the money. I couldnt care less thats its a second accurate in a year because I waste so much of my time anyway. I couldnt care less if its been made by angels in the hills of Switzerland.
The Skagen is ultra slim and titanium. Ive put a brown leather strap on it now which looks cool.
A watch can get a bashing so Im pretty careful what I wear for work and for dress occasions.
I need a watch for swimming but buying cheaper leaves me with options to buy many more if needed. I would go radio controlled again....the downside of cheaper watches is that Ive had a few pack up on me.
Casio G-Shock, excellent watch, indestructible & tells the time perfectly.
Also got a fancy Rotary chrono thing that's spent more time being mended than it has on my wrist, last time it went wrong I chucked it in a drawer and left it there.
You get what you pay for apparently :lol:

Just rescued this old boy from the bin...the face was scratched to hell....I used some 1000 wet and dry and then polished it out with metal wadding polish...the gold plate is pretty good...bought a strap for it today for £6.95...it's running spot on and keeps great time for a 1960's/70's Russian mechanical watch...plain and functional

Just rescued this old boy from the bin...the face was scratched to hell....I used some 1000 wet and dry and then polished it out with metal wadding polish...the gold plate is pretty good...bought a strap for it today for £6.95...it's running spot on and keeps great time for a 1960's/70's Russian mechanical watch...plain and functional

My mate has either a tag or a heuer. Forgot which. It was before they joined up and is worth a few bob. Quite nice too

I treated myself to this for me 40th and I don't regret it one bit. There's a shop called watches of Switzerland in Canary Wharf and it draws me every time. Just spent getting on for £1,500 to have my watch repaired and serviced - or about a quarter of the price of an equivalent timepiece. But its value is worth a lot more than that to me: it was a 21st birthday present from my parents.

I have a Rolex Submariner which I bought in 1970 for the princely sum of £84. I couldn't afford the model with date as that was £96. It now needs a full service which is likely to cost £500 or so. It now resides in my sock drawer.
I also have an Oris along similar lines to the Submariner but with a date. Around 6 months after I bought this it was running slow, so Oris rebuilt it and it now runs very well, losing just one second/day. A beautiful thing with a crystal back, so you can see the mech.
I bought my first ‘quality ‘ watch around the same time, it was a Breitling Navitimer, for the princely sum of £69!
The Omega Speedmaster, which had recently been to the moon was a quid dearer, but the guy across the road had a cheaper Breitling, so it helped sway my decision.
There’s another similarity to your story here, it too needed a service that for the same money, could buy a brand new, then modernistic Casio.
I stupidly also put the Breitling in a drawer at my mums house, unfortunately she’d had building work done, and somehow the watch went missing.
Get it serviced, it will definitely be worth it as the watch will be worth lots more now, and will fall into the vintage category, which always attracts a premium!
I just checked at Watchfinder, a working model same as yours aged 34 years, is selling at £24,750!
There are others...a 59 year old one at £16,750
And a 40 year old one at £11,750.
Get it serviced and sell it!

Watches now were talking, I have always had Seiko Automatics going back 30yrs, I always go for the divers and have a 009 and a Spork and 12m ago bought one of the reissued Seiko Turtles. I removed the Hardlex standard Crystal and fitted A domed Sapphire Crystal AR Coating. Something about Seiko Automatics ? Also have a Rolex Submariner which is a box queen, so no point having it really. I had a Tag but sold it to a mate as that didn't get worn either.
Have several Casio quartz as beaters for working, but tending to wear the Turtle 24/7 so have a few laid up in the collection
Just like Seikos period, won't say how many I own and have tucked away just more than you can count with your digits :D

Now that is elegant and a lot more stylish than the multi-function 'stopwatch' diver's watches.
My watch originally had a black leather strap. It was replaced with a metal bracelet a few years later - something which seemed to be a good idea at the time, but now I have doubts about the wisdom of that change.
I have a second square-shaped watch with a black leather strap, which I use on the rare occasion I wear a dinner jacket.

I've just had a watch clear out. I sold 2 Tag Heuers, a Nezumi Chrono, a Bulova diver and my much loved Omega Seamaster 2264.50. I can only wear one watch at a time and unfortunately I needed the money so it had to be done.
I'm now the proud owner of a beaten up old Seiko Daytona Chrono that I've had for about 15 years and my faithful Breitling Aerospace that I wear everyday.

I have listed my Oris Divers watch on E-Bay. It was very accurate but a few months ago, it let in water whilst I was in a swimming pool. As I have two other watches I decided to sell it rather than pay hundreds for a service.

Mine's about 13 years old, I got it second hand a couple of years back for £2.2k with box & papers, overdue for a service. The Luminor Marina 1950 was purchased new in Aruba last year.

There is no substitute for a time piece on my wrist .Its essential for work as I need to know the time regularly and quickly. I cant understand why anyone would want to pull a phone out of their pocket for that function.
However I have never seen the need to spend more than £100 on a watch and I would not have an analogue date function because they need resetting too often ( I dont know whether expensive watches solve this issue)
Smart watches leave me cold as I dont need one.
I buy what I use. A divers watch for evening wear seems very odd to me. When I had divers dials on cheaper watches I never used them. Same with multi dials.....you will hardly use them so it just clogs up the face. Its all bling and it doesnt impress me :) Taste is simplicity.

I'm inclined to agree. I have two watches: a 48 year old Rolex Oyster worn everyday and which keeps time correct to 15 seconds a year; and a gold square-cased Bulova Acutron with a black leather strap worn with a dinner jacket when the occasion arises.
Whilst I admire the aesthetics of vintage watches and appreciate the craftsmanship that goes into their making, I can't really see the point in collecting them: you can only wear one at a time and they all need to be wound up regularly for them to keep good time. I certainly don't need any stopwatch or tachymeter facilities.

Thanks Malcolm. The Pro Divers are even more affordable & have the same movements but a lot of them are so obviously 'homages' (not that that's always a bad thing).

No Im not trying to rain on your parade. I have a valid opinion which keeps things in check. I like some of the watches pictured and good for you if you like something hand crafted by angels
I have a nice looking Skagen but the point is its only £100 compared with some of the bling here. Slim titanium and good looking...the only thing I dont like about it is the lever back which even with the correct tools can leave marks.
Im not saying you have to rely on a cheap looking watch. I am saying you can get a nice looking analogue watch for a low price. If anybody asks me the time they dont want it to the second. They are happy if I tell them within five minutes or so.

I had a casio radio controlled watch..analogue face with a digital functions integrated with the back panel...did everything a Rolex did and more.. second accurate to the last time it took a reading which was a couple of times a day. I would still have it if casio hadnt messed up the internal design so even the watch shop didnt know how to change the battery...aerials were falling out and all sorts so you may have a case for your lifelong watch.
Its not the end of the world at that price. I chop and change and dont mind if they get a bit damaged

All my Grand Divers were around the ton mark (+/- a tenner).
There's the old joke about the watch that comes with a lifelong guarantee - when it breaks the mainspring slashes your wrist..

I’ve been hanging my nose over the Bulova Lunar watch for a few weeks, if you didn’t already know it was the ‘other’ watch worn on the moon, but after a bit of deliberation, and the advice of a former Goldsmiths manager decided against it.
However, having scratched the bracelet albeit ever so slightly recently, I decided that I wanted, no, needed a watch that I wouldn’t mind getting scratched, and scraped against rocks and things since I moved to the coast.
I decided to go with another model in the Bulova range, after all, when you know what makes a watch tick, you’ll buy a Bulova!

Anyway, joking aside I bought one of their Sea King range, Chronograph, waterproof to 300 metres, and despite being quartz, and just about the most accurate watch going, it has a lovely sweep second hand which makes it look mechanical/automatic, thanks to its triple prong tuning fork action.

Well I wouldn't put my life on it, but it certainly keeps time to within a minute a year. I have the watch serviced every five years and wind it up at the same time each day. It has been on my wrist virtually constantly for the last 48 years (apart from the time it is away being serviced); I even wear it in bed, so it is at a near constant temperature.
Maybe I'm lucky, or it's a fluke. I should add that time keeping to a minute a month is more than accurate enough for me.

For my own interest as well, I just Googled how well Rolex watches keep time, my Explorer gains a bit just like the rest of them, but we are told losing or gaining 5 seconds a day is way within chronometer guidelines, at that it may gain or lose 35 seconds a week, 2’ 20” per 4 weeks, and around 30 minutes or so over a year.
So if yours does keep to the time you mentioned, you are indeed a very lucky person!

I have radio controlled clocks all over the house. They are among the best things I have ever bought.
I dont know why they didnt catch on more with watches. I may get another radio controlled watch. If casio hadnt botched up being able to easily fit the battery I would still have one

The Tangerine Seiko 5 is a beauty...love it...but I do prefer the winder at the 4 o'clock postion...sold all my watches a good while back now...one of my favourites being a Seiko World Timer...and a one I wore everyday, was a fake Rolex Submariner automatic...now a watch is just a tool...I wouldnt spend more than 50-60 quid on one...Just recently bought a Pulsar Solar watch for a penny over £40.00 from Argos....looks ok and does the job...

Ooooo., that's loverly..I prefer the Citizen lefty, to the Rolex...I think Rolex is a bit like expensive hifi, if you get my drift..and I can't stand the raised glass, which magnifies the date. It is totally unneccessary...The Rolex does look very nice, but the Citizen would be my choice, It's got nice pleasing easy on the eye, easy to read dial...and a black Bezel and it looks the business...I'd probably put a stainless band on it too. This just my personal preference. I'll have to stay away for a while now, or I'll get the bug again and start collecting....:lol:

I find that feature quite useful so I can actually see the date with my poor old 60 year old eyes :wheniwasaboy:
The Citizen will always be amongst my favourites though, Xmas prezzie from my partner who passed in 2011.

Indeed Rich, I do quite like Tudors but, apart from the odd Invicta that might tempt me, my next major purchase will be a Daytona. It's just that at their price point it's a very considered purchase and other stuff keeps taking priority (like eating, energy bills etc.).

That's fully understandable, as much as I fancy a Panerai as a 50th birthday treat, bills and living must unfortunately come first. A Daytona is a very nice piece to be looking at though, what sort of year are you thinking of? They are all handsome but some of the vintage models are ridiculously nice.

Not an all gold one, that kind of shouts 'ROLEX'! but I don't mind gold accents & would prefer one with contrasting sub dials, something like this - https://www.watchfinder.co.uk/Rolex/Daytona/116523/13239/item/134917 . I'll probably get it from Watchfinder as I've dealt with them in the past (got a nice Tag Carrera for my other half from them) & they now have a branch at Lakeside shopping centre so I can see what I'm buying. Probably be towards the middle of next year now as we've two holidays coming up (and to pay for) before then.

A mixture of ebay & amazon although I try to ensure that they are dispatched from a UK address (I get the impression a lot of the Chinese sellers have agents in the UK who send their wares on for them). The Corguet Black Bay homage is actually a better quality automatic watch which I purchased from a UK ebay seller who had bought it from China & supplied it with a nice 'aged' leather strap.

I found my Speedmaster and it's a trashed as i remember, too many years wearing it at work as a MET fitter.
I'll get a quote to restore it, but my guess is it'll be uneconomic to repair it.

The speedmaster is a very nice watch, I had to choose between a Seamaster and a speedmaster a few years ago, I went for the Seamaster. It was a great watch, I really enjoyed wearing it and only recently sold it, but I think I'll always want a speedmaster. If you get chance pop some pics on, I'd love to see it, even as it is now.

Added this to the collection, to wear at the beach etc, not too bothered if it gets scuffed.
Mind you, the accuracy is absolutely amazing, to within seconds a year, and despite being quartz , the fly back second hand sweeps smoothly.
